While I agree that this is an issue, I can only wonder about whether Dell, Gateway, and every other PC manufacturer is guilty of the same. I can't imagine the motherboard factories, hard drive factories, video card factories, RAM factories, case factories, and sound card factories don't use some kind of extraordinarily cheap and exploitive work force at at least one of their plants or offices. I'm against it anywhere, and against not staying competitive in the local labor market with healthy work environments as well. I'm all about philanthropy, but singling out one of probably thousands of manufacturies guilty of this seems wierd.

Have you played with FOAF or XFN? It lets you define who your friends are on your own web page using a syntax based on RDF (FOAF) or by using the rel attribute of the a tag (XFN). LiveJournal provides FOAF data based on your LJ friends; some readers like Safari can use this data to generate more links on a displayed feed.

Also, MySpace does support RSS for blogs: this blog has an RSS feed listed at the top of its page.

Yeah, that too. I'm not sure the last time I played recorded music. I know the reason I did so was to learn a fiddle tune well enough that I didn't need to listen to a recorded version anymore.

The time before that it was to learn a song to sing, but if I want to hear it I go ask the delightful young woman who wrote it to sing it for me. She usually obliges and I might well add some harmony:

For one thing it's potentially a marketing goldmine.

"Rickybobby" has 60,000 "friends." It could be 600,000 in a couple of months. Almost all of these "friends" are in the coveted teens-and-twenties demographic. The fact that they are willing to be friends with a movie means they're susceptible to advertising. They will be getting messages and emails and "friend invites" from upcoming movies and who-knows-what-else from Sony Pictures for a long time to come.

Why do you think Myspace is worth so much to Fox? It's a database of millions of teenagers who proudly list their interests and hobbies.

A story of yesterday night:
- anonymous at /b/[NSFW] finds a way to find separate private user profiles on Photobucket in the recent[possible NSFW] directory.
- more /b/tards embark on a quest for more amateur porn by watching this page.
- they find about 80 pics of a girl naked, masturbating.
- they find out more about that girl, including her myspace and Xanga profiles.
- They find out she's 15. Making essentially the pics of her very illegal.
- They post the pics wherever they can, her school, her friends.
- She deletes the pics and the profiles, but the profiles are in caches, the pics already packed on Rapidshare[NSFW, NSFH, and highly illegal!]
- They contact her, fill her up on the story with lots of lies including that her boyfriend was the one who published the pics.
- Her profile on myspace gets ".-*forever loved*-." header. Rumors of her suicide start popping up. Quite likely she's dead by now.

Now of course a proxy-blocking firewall wouldn't help here.
But let's see: web 2.0 sites made this possible - forum, photo sharing, file sharing, profile site.
Unlimited access to the net for the kid and for reckles teens from /b/. Wouldn't happen if not that.
Think of your own reflections. It's not about proxies. It's about kids with access to what they shouldn't be able to access.

Artwork generation through filtered random numbers by kruhft · 2006-07-26 06:59 · Score: 0, Redundant · on One Man's Spam Is Another Man's Art

This is an interesting take on something that I find quite inspiriing, where one removes the human from the creation process and replaces the randomness of their actions with some other form of generator (spam email ins this case, or a call to random() in the case of a number of my current works) and observes what results. It moves the artist from creator to judge or producer; the program has no idea whether what it has done is good and it would be almost impossible to write a program to recognize "good art", but as humans we are very capapble of making such a decision very quickly given our ability to solve NP problems almost instantly at times.

I write programs that generate art, and I choose what's good or not to represent myself in artwork. I wrote the programs along the lines of how I would make art, let it run and pick the best pieces. I am still nagged with a bit of guilt about whether I created them or not, but I would say that I did, because without my work the works would never have existed, so I am comfortable with saying that I created them.

Someone above said this is not artwork due to a couple of things, one of them being that true art work requires emotion during it's creation; I beg to differ in that true artwork *invokes* some sort of emotional response in the viewer and the emotions or lack there of during it's creation are somewhat irrelevant (although, granted, I have made some pretty amazing art when trying to get some emotions out). The computer that generates the pieces doesn't have emotions, but if the piece it makes creates emotions, then I would say that yes it is art, and the program that created it...well, I'm not quite sure what to call that, but I've been liking the term mini-soul lately.

A shameless plug for some of my work that's been made along similar lines as this would be my Programmed Piano EP which consists of 4 songs played by computer programs and my Genpaper series which were image compositions created programmatically using a shell script.

The main point of these works was to test a theory of mine that in the end we are all just random number generators our thermodynamic core, but that randomness is filtered amd amplified through various means and processes and as such we then become *us* to the world. These works used filtered random numbers to create art in ways that I would create art; in effect I created a part of myself inside the computer to do work for me, but I would never claim that I could create the same pieces as the programs did, but they sure were a lot faster and ended up being pretty good at what they did.

Not bad for programs less than 10-20 lines long. Hopefully this was somewhat cohoerent since I'm in a pre-coffee state of mind.

MySpace is cool. It's got criical mass, it's free promotion and it's actually a pretty fun game to play. Of course there will always be haters, but we'll never be able to shut them up, so in the end, you really just have to ignore them. I've been doing this both alone and with my buddy Jack for a few years now, using Asian films as the base. We figured that trying to redo an entire audio track would be too time consuming, have to replace all sound effects and everything. This method works much better since none of us speak anything but English anyways. We just started on Godzilla: Final Wars a month ago, and have started turning it into some kind of religious zealot war. These things have a life of their own, we never know how the story is going to turn out.
