Re:As a Freethinking Christian
Actually the brightest, most caritable people are Atheists. Albert Einstein, George Carlin, Bill Gates and Mark Twain are all Atheists. America's founding fathers are all agnostic. If they would have had the same information that we do today then they would be Atheists as well. Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker, Don Fancisco Pizarro, David Koresh, and Milosivic were or are Christians like you.
As amatter of fact, Atheists have a better moral and ethical track record. When have you ever heard of Atheists starting wars? It is always by someone that is religious. Slavery was also started by religions.
But I have great news for you, you are not lowly and weak and a sinner and unable to accomplish anything on your own. You do not have to pay a price for a supposed crime that two mythical ancestors committed (seeking knowledge isn't even a crime by freethinker's standards...you don't need to fear it), and you don't need to ask for forgiveness... you were innocent all the time.

Re:Eh?For me, what label an album is released on is the major criterion in determining how it will be procured - surely I am not the only one? No, you are not. I don't buy many CDs anymore, as I'm not interested in Defective Recording Mechanisms. I also am not interested in funding what I consider to be a truly evil organization. But when a pal sent me a link to a band that he thought I might like, Immortal Avenger, I went to their MySpace page (yeah, yeah, I know...) and found that I could listen to their entire EP. After listening to the entire EP for free, I also noticed that they were not RIAA associated, so I bought the CD. If they had been an RIAA band, I wouldn't have.

no way the public will use linux on thisIn regards to how well students adapt to technology, here is an excerpt from a recent blog entry by a college-educated grad (and minor radio celebrity in Austin, TX):
As for the rest of you. I discovered the most astounding invention today. My mind gasps in amazement. I am purely stupefied at the sheer glory of technology. Not since the invention of the mechanical pencil have I been so intrigued by a device that leaves me dumbfounded and invigorated, thinking, "How did they come up with this?! It's GENIUS! What could they possibly think of next?!!"
My friends...today, I discovered a USB port. Holy balls, it is incredible! You can transfer your pictures from your crappy PC to your slick Mac Book Pro in the blink of an eye! No joke.
Now, I've heard 'USB-this' and 'USB-that' for awhile now...but I never really let it "register" because it involves computers. Anything that has to do with computers or sports, my brain automatically shuts down and my eyes roll white...until today. I'm on top of things from now on. I can't let another invention like this pass me by.
Since USB ports haven't apparently been discovered by the general public, what's the chance that "root passwords" and wi-fi configuration have? -

Re:Interesting ThoughtParis Hilton is a feast for the geek's eyes, and we probably don't need to hear what she has to say.
I did look at her MySpace page, it seems that there was a petition asking Gov. Schwarzenegger to pardon her so she won't have to go to jail, and apparently Paris herself decided to thank the individual involved by posting a "thank-you" on her page. She misspelled "sign", when asking people to "sign" the petition. It's gone now, the MySpace page is a horrible excuse for a web page, someone needs to clean up the page, perhaps by cutting off the public's right to post there, just leaving posts cleared by a kind and caring webmaster that can turn the page into something not so out-of-control.
With so many talented webmaster types here at Slashdot, I'm sure some of you would like to somehow contact Ms. Hilton, offering your help in her time of need.
I probably could work the assignment in somehow, but I'll go ahead and let some of you cut in line ahead of me, being the nice fellow that I am.
I do play with GIMP, and I have a "Wallpaper Control Center" application in my Knoppix remaster that has a section where one can, at the touch of a button, download and install a desktop wallpaper directly from my rapidweather.com/images directory. One of them is a nice picture of Paris Hilton. I do it that way so I can change the "downloadable" wallpapers, all the others are in the CD, and are fixed.
Check the "screenshots" link, below for a screenshot of the "Wallpaper Control Center".
The application is basically for managing right clicked web images for wallpaper purposes, sizing them to a particular desktop, and saving them for future use, within a "livecd linux" environment. If the user downloads too many images and tries to apply one, the application will take notice and guide the user through a fix, where extra images are easily moved from the active "desktop wallpaper" area, where they can be managed. Almost impossible to fowl it up without the application asking questions, and arranging for fixes. Very easy to do, so if one comes across a batch of web images that you want for your desktop, download all you want, then start the control center by clicking on the IceWM toolbar icon. Much faster processing of these downloaded images than with KDE, for instance.
Here is the url for the Paris wallpaper image:
http://www.rapidweather.com/images/sample6.jpg
I can't link to it here, you'll get a Forbidden error, but you may copy the link and go there directly in your browser. To see the others, enter "sample1.jpg, etc. (There are six 1024x768 images, all produced using GIMP)

Re:Good for him
I think everybody would look at this a bit different if they actually did hijack the guy's page, but you're absolutely wrong. The only thing he got was the URL myspace.com/barackobama to point to the page managed by him and his staff. That is all. Go on, go look at Barack's page; he only has 35k friends right now, and a sign up date of 4/25/07. In fact, why don't you also check out the fan's page that was supposedly hijacked?
Every story reported about this MySpace/Obama case has stated this clearly, and there's evidence to back it up. What you stated is absolutely, 100% wrong. -

Oh noes!
I hope they don't "take action" against the digital painting I did, which is featured on the front page of my website and incorporates the key. I also hope they don't "take action" against the HDDVD song I wrote here: http://www.myspace.com/stevepordon (I made an arp synth line by converting to binary and using C1 for zeros and C2 for ones). Both of these things are, naturally, original works of art and are clearly protected by the first amendment, DMCA or not.
Fuck you, AACS, and fuck you, MPAA.
Ironically, I wouldn't be so eager to kick the MPAA in the balls if they hadn't claimed under perjury that I was hosting DeCSS about a year after I voluntarily removed it from my site. Oops! -

Re:Good for him
The campaign didn't negotiate with him, and ended up promising him $10,000.
Correction: Apparently, the campaign didn't offer him any money, but said that they would negotiate in an apparent effort to stall for time while they were really negotiating with myspace to take the page.
Also, Joe's contact list (with over 160,000 names, now down to 140k) was not lost. It was transfered to a blank account. So it appears even myspace sympathized with Joe's position.
I list of 160,000 loyal obama supporters to ask for contributions from is probably worth the $50k Joe was asking. -
Re:Good for him
That guy named a site after a well-known person and attempted to hold it ransom for much more than it was worth.
It was clearly marked as a "fan site.".. The price tag the guy set on it was to pay him back for the 160,000 user community he had formed which even myspace said he had a right to. He didn't want to stop doing the page--he would've kept doing the fan site for free. He asked for cash because, since they were forcing off his own project anyway, he thought he should be compensated for what he had lost.
The campaign didn't negotiate with him, and ended up promising him $10,000. This happened briefly before they strong-armed myspace to step in. It is not for you to say how much he can sell his OWN stuff for. Judging from the amount of work he put into it, and that he didn't want to give it up, it's obvious to me that he was not asking for too much.
The guy didn't have a right to Obama's name. He also didn't have a right to force himself into the campaign as he attempted.
He wasn't doing anything like that. He made the page and started it from the ground up and was an avid supporter of Obama, just trying to do his part. Over time, the community got huge under his care, and Obama's campaign stepped in and said "hey, nice work, gimme!".
Note that only the link - barack obama's name - got transferred, the idiot still has his page.
What? No. They transfered it to another URL and dropped his friends. All myspace did was transfer his text to another account. He lost EVERYTHING of value.
Losing a URL to a website, as any idiot can piece together, often ends an online community. This community was not created by the obama campaign. They could've setup an "official" page with a different URL and left this poor guy alone. Instead, they hijacked myspace's terms of service and fear of law suits to steal this guy's URL and destroy all his work.
The site was clearly labeled "unofficial," and the entire community knew it as such. The campaign simply wanted the address. Personally, I think it hurt them more than their new URL could ever help.
He deserves what he got. If you don't want your site to be transferred, don't name it after a public figure. If this had been a registrar issue the result would have been no different.
Registrar issues are vastly different than free myspace accounts. He wasn't even posing as Obama, so there's no legal issue here. Obama does not own the myspace.com/barackobama url any more than he owns en.wikipedia.com/Barack_Obama.
If I were Joe Anthony, I'd sue the Obama campaign if I could. -
Re:What did you expect?
Let's compare Bill Richardson's behavior in that situation then. Let's see if he decides to screw over the guy who registered http://www.myspace.com/billrichardson - simply for the sake of expediency - or if he can manage with http://www.myspace.com/richardsonforpresident
The Obama Rule means that the "little" Bill doesn't stand a chance. Do you really want to entrust more power to someone with that attitude? -

Re:Foolish, but who's foolish?
I also wonder why Joe doesn't simply file for a TRO against MySpace, since they violated their own terms of service when they disabled his access without his consent. I suspect there is more to the story than we are being told.
Excerpts from Myspace's TOS:
"MySpace.com reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to reject, refuse to post or remove any posting (including private messages) by you, or to restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to all or any part of the MySpace Services at any time, for any or no reason, with or without prior notice, and without liability."
"The following is a partial list of the kind of activity that is illegal or prohibited on the MySpace Website and through your use of the MySpace Services. MySpace.com reserves the right to investigate and take appropriate legal action against anyone who, in MySpace.com's sole discretion, violates this provision, including without limitation, reporting you to law enforcement authorities. Prohibited activity includes, but is not limited to: ...
6.attempting to impersonate another Member or person; ...
11. displaying an advertisement on your profile, or accepting payment or anything of value from a third person in exchange for your performing any commercial activity on or through the MySpace Services on behalf of that person, such as placing commercial content on your profile, posting blogs or bulletins with a commercial purpose, selecting a profile with a commercial purpose as one of your "Top 8" friends, or sending private messages with a commercial purpose;" -
since you may not read ACsThe site you see with the "official Barack profile" is the hijacked one.
The unofficial one is the second one down, with 160,000 friends. (If you search for Barack Obama) Currently it can be accessed here.

Re:What did you expect?
They are only now going to begin to discover the loss to there credibility, which could potentially be very damaging.
Well ... I think "we" should all help them figure out just how much they may have damaged their credibility.
If you're a MySpace user, after clicking on http://www.myspace.com/barackobama feel free to click on "Send Message" and let him know how you feel. :) (remember to keep things clean and expletive free). Hey, he's even "On Line Now!" so he might reply. ;)
Also, whether you Are or Are Not a MySpace user, feel free to click on "Block User". I'm sure those metrics might make their way to his attention (or at least the mainstream media's). -
ZX Spectrum Orchestra
laptops? too easy!
http://www.myspace.com/zxspectrumorchestra
"ZX Spectrum Orchestra have been locked away in the lab writing code. They use no midi, no samplers, in fact, no instruments other than Sinclair hardware and peripheral devices. For instance, vocals on tracks are supplied by the Currah Speech. An early speech synthesizer built for the ZX Spectrum, it explores the found poetry of basic keyboard commands." -
Mashups!
The best laptop performance I've ever seen is a guy called Girl Talk. He makes whole songs out of pieces of pop songs. A lot of work goes into editing the pieces to make them fit, but they are still comprised of almost no original content. If you can find the song "smash your head," it's an excellent introduction. The other killer act I've seen is Dev/Null. His music is completely original, but I wouldn't be surprised if I get a few "this is not music" replies. Check out "bolt thrower in a chinese restaurant" or "nitrous induced skull fracture".

As an artist...
.. on a non-RIAA label I have to say that this pisses me off more than illegal downloading. Which pisses me off a lot already.
I rely heavily on streaming stations, social networking sites, and other internet tools to promote my work to my little niche demographic. This corporate bullying effectively removes yet more of the "little guy"'s ability to put out and promote non-major-label content.
Bad enough that little pissants steal our work, now big pissants want a piece. >=[ -

You can also download the MP3 from his myspace page...

Scientists already know why plants are green
It's pretty obvious once you know the argument. It's due to light-scattering. There's so much energy in the sky all day that it doesn't matter what color you absorb, there's plenty at any visible wavelength. But during sunset and sunrise there's predominantly red light in the sky, and a green plant would be more efficient at absorbing red light (they're complementary colors) than if the plant were another color. This blog entry goes into it:

Sorry, not interested
I'm busy listening to Andrea Corr's "Shame On You" antiwar song from her new solo album to be released in June by Atlantic.
Check out the 30-second sample on her MySpace page or her Bebo page.
They had the full songs up on the Bebo page at one point, but took them down after a while, but not before I got the whole versions of all three of the songs they posted.
