In comparision to the Gameboy, probably not that much....

looking at the relevant page of the FAQ the last model (PDP-11/94) got above 18mhz...which was approx 4x the original speed.

Looking the specs on the link mentioned in the article the GBA has a 16.76 mhz ARM processor (no memory management or cache in this model) *and* a 4mhz or 8mhz Z80 to run the old GB games.

As to your point about NetBSD, the arm port26 runs on the very earliest commericial ARM machines so I see no reason why it couldn't run on a GBA........

ooh now I do, the arm26 port needs 8MB ram.....only 256k on a GBA........but if you can use gampak ram that will give you plenty..

According to an Inernetnews article, Netcraft has confirmed that *BSD has "dramatically increased its market penetration over the last year."
There has been a steady increase in *BSD developers over the past decade.
There are currently 307 FreeBSD developers as of the 2004 core team election.

b) Somebody strip out or rewrite all parts of the kernel copyrighted by people who objected to the license change, which in the end would probably amount to an effective rewrite of the whole thing.

And if you're going to rewrite the Linux kernel under the BSD license, you might as well look into any one of the several already-mature, BSD-licensed operating systems that exist. Honestly, there's no need to relicense Linux, unless you're concerned about buzzword-compatability issues. Why reinvent *BSD?

With XP, I'd think they'd worry more about someone wandering over and taking over the plane to fly it elsewhere, than about it crashing.

XP is a lot more stable than older windows (not perfect, of course), especially when you get to pick the hardware it runs on, but does the plane also automatically download and install all the latest security patches?

I'm pretty sure NetBSD has a port that is designed to run on an airplane...

Turns out that *BSD is stronger than ever!
According to an Inernetnews article, Netcraft has confirmed that *BSD has "dramatically increased its market penetration over the last year."
There has been a steady increase in *BSD developers over the past decade.
There are currently 307 FreeBSD developers as of the 2004 core team election.

In any case, for the near future if you want to run a 64 bit operating system you will either be using one of the free Linux versions or the free download of Windows XP-64 beta.

You might have noticed that there are other 64 bit CPU's than AMD64 that are in wide use, and other OS than Linux suports AMD64.

FreeBSD supports AMD64, and so does NetBSD.

Also OpenBSD supports it, but the support is even better in current. In addition, OpenBSD will use the NX-bit to increase security.

Besides Linux and Windows, you can also use FreeBSD, for which amd64 is in tier 1 (full support), along with i386. Other BSDs of course support it :

I've always heard that NetBSD has excellent hardware support in addition to running on multiple architectures. However, I think I have to disagree with this out of personal experience.

I tried installing NetBSD on my HP Pavilion XF315 laptop (the Walmart.com xf315, which was actually ze1000 or something) last summer... 1.6.1 I think it was. The installation program froze while making devices, and the partition tool destroyed my partition table. Apparently I'm not the only one to have trouble with MAKEDEV on an hp (see here). I realize now that this was a combination of Mandrakes weird partitioning quirks and NetBSD's inability to understand them, but it *should have just left well enough alone*. I never told it to touch my data partition (FAT32) but I nevertheless had to install RedHat and grep -f /dev/hda to manually search for important data (like some source code and a list of contact info) that wasn't backed up. This was enough to turn me off to NetBSD for good -- or at least until 2.x comes out <grin>.

FreeBSD makes all devices without a hitch. I even have sound working on it! Something I can't say about RedHat or any of the other 'user-friendly' Linux distros.

I really do wonder, why did SGI and IBM invest so much time and money on Linux, instead of e.g. NetBSD? I understand IBM is currently using Linux to push their middleware and J2EE stuff, but they could as well use a BSD and not even need to give stuff back to the community.

If you're finding that the GENERIC kernel is too bloated, then the quick fix is to create a custom kernel usung the adjustkernel script. This parses the output of dmesg, and creates a custom kernel config file with only the devices found on your machine enabled.

On my laptop, I was able to pare the kernel down to 1.8Mb. Not such a big deal on a machine with 512Mb of RAM, but it's useful on something like my Vax which only has 24Mb.
