I only tried gentoo briefly before going back to NetBSD and Debian with a bad taste in my mouth. I know that they had a plan to "eventually" offer binary packages of the various programs (presumably a mirror of their cds or something) for downloading online (similar to apt-get or pkg_add $URL)...

So my question is: did they ever get around to implementing that, or do I need to stick to more serious distributions and operating systems in order to have that functionality?

Now if I can get the Linux kernel to recognize my sound hardware.....

(no, really. I've run Linux since back in the days of the 1.2.13 kernel. I took a year or two off recently and when I came back, via. Slackware 9.1, I can't get a kernel built that finds my stock Sound Blaster 32. I haven't tried that hard, but back in the day I didn't try hard, either, and my Sound Blaster 16 (and before that my Sound Blaster Pro, as far back as 1994) worked great.

For NetBSD: HEADS UP: XFree86 4.4.0 imported

In regards to linking, I believe the new license is only on non-library code. This from the license FAQ on their site:

"To avoid issues with application programs such as KDE and GNOME and other X-based applications, that are licensed under the GPL, the 1.1 licence is not being applied to client side libraries."

Sorry, I know it's screwey to reply to yourself, but looking over their website some more they look to be even deeper in denial than I thought over this, and I don't see any better place to post this than here.

The Xfree86 homepage proudly trumpts the following:

4.4.0 now Stable After tremendous testing and community feedback, the 4.4.0 Release is now available for twenty (yep that's the number 20!) popular platforms. Distros that have integrated it are: NetBSD, Slackware Linux, Conectiva, and many others. See our distro support page for the full breakout.

But checking up on it, that doesn't seem to be true.

My understanding that this _IS_ the guest OS port to the Xen architecture. Check it out at http://www.netbsd.org/Changes/#newportxen.

Now, who knows what operating systems can host the Xen virtual machine monitor.

I saw this announcement a while ago regarding the new logo.

The new port Xen virtual machine monitor for i386 sure looks interesting. The guest OS has to be ported to the Xen architecture, though.

Also NetBSD imported XFree86 in the beggining of march 2004.

I exactly known, what you mean about the ports system. FYI, you don't mean "the port system itself", you just have problems with installation of binary packages.

Of course, you can pkg_add http://URL, and it will automatically fetch dependent packages, but the problem is, you need to know the exact url. Package name, package version, .tgz or .tbz - that's a bit confusing. You're right. It can be done better, just like the way Debian does that. Debian simply rocks when it comes to binary packages - and I am pretty happy, that it exists, so it showed the way in this area.

I suppose I will be doing some work in this area with NetBSD packages collection (pkgsrc), but that should be easily portable to FreeBSD and OpenBSD ports. The whole idea is, that if you generate an index file for all binary packages on the site. Information would include the description, requirements, size - pretty much everything found in +* files (+DESCR, +COMMENT, +PLIST and other) - perhaps I could use Berkeley DB format for it. Then, in an user-level utility, you just need to give one URL to fetch that description file (bzipped, of course). Then, such utility could work much like Debian's apt-get and apt-cache - a frontend to pkg_add and a quick way to browse all available, but uninstalled software. We'd have a friendly utility for new users for all BSDs.

Also, as pkgsrc is portable and there are already binary packages avialable for Linux (not to mention NetBSD, of course) from the latest branch of pkgsrc -- we'd just need to add that small utility to bootstrap binary kit for pkgsrc, and you'd have then binary pkgsrc available for your box -- pretty much for all Linux distributions. These are all cool projects, and they can give you perhaps much more, than some Linux distributions (especially those ones, who "lock" user in a maze of incompatible binary packages and their dependencies ;). In fact, it can even be the basic package system on your Slack (and it is available from some time, so you don't have to create another Slackware-packaging-system). Oh, wel.

And, perhaps, if FreeBSD Ports not impress you, when compared to Gentoo, perhaps you should try then NetBSD packages collection. Maybe the number of operating systems and platforms will somehow impress you, it impress me for sure. Of course, there are bigger and smaller problems, as they always are, in any opensource product, but perhaps with more users activley contributing to the project (just by testing the packages -- that's just using some of your CPU cycles on pkgsrc, instead SETI@Home ;)

BSD? Dead? I don't think so. There's massive active development going on in all areas of each of the BSDs, there are thousands of lines of code shared among developers, lot of new ideas submited, lots of problems solved. There are a lot of companies and sites using it (among others, About.com, Yahoo!, distributed.net, Juniper, NASA)... Check uptime stats on Netcraft itself, FreeBSD rules in the top ten.

Its just perhaps BSD people are usually too busy doing their projects to comment here, so you can get a false impression ;) Or, perhaps, noone likes to answer troll comments - but you've got a point with that packaging system, so that's why I bothered ;)

I update my laptop once a month by downloading the tar files from the i386/binary/sets directory, and then using the install floppies from the i386/installation/floppy directory. Alternatively, making a bootable CD from the releng snapshots is very easy as this page explains.

There's a good chance it does work with your USB wifi adapter. I don't own any myself, but I've noticed plenty of discussions about them on the NetBSD mailing lists (mostly people adding quirks for more esoteric devices from what I recall).

There should be a list of supported devices on the NetBSD website, although stuff that's only in -current may not be listed yet. If so, then you could either take a look at the GENERIC kernel config file, or ask on one of the excellent mailing lists.

I run a web server on a pumped up 68k Mac using NetBSD. It's the only machine I have available for this use. I'd love to run a few simple JSPs on it, but that won't happen because there's no JRE for my platform. If it were open source and I could compile my own runtime, the situation would be different.

Even if someone gave me an old PII-200, my wife would nix the idea of having the big loud thing sit in the corner of our home office. My Mac is small, with a small power supply and cool processor. It has adequate specs to run a capable, albeit slow, application server if it were possible.

Maybe my machine is obsolete, sure. But the point is that even if Java is the king of cross-platform computing, it doesn't mean jack if there's no runtime for many platforms.

Add to that the fact that a BSD system will not automatically upgrade your /etc, then you have the best reasons that say, a Debian box is easier to maintain.

Your BSD is clearly not my BSD, or else you'd know about etcupdate. Having discovered first hand the "joy" of Debian's installer and lack of backwards compatability between releases, I think I'll steer clear of it.

Apple did not focus on paint programs, they focused on the user experience. I guess you've never heard of ClarisWorks, Appleworks, PageMaker, Works, FileMaker, FoxPro, and the other microsoft office programs. Operating system manufacturers don't "focus" on the software other companies write for their platform, other companies choose not to write for a particular platform. Apple doesn't go around convincing companies to write programs for them. That argument is silly.

Yes localtalk is slower than 10Base2 or 10Base5, do you know how much an ISA network card cost for the IBM PC at the time? $500 or more, and they were hardly reliable. Endless support problems? How about when one of the 10base2 network had a problem? The entire network end to end went down as well. Where's the magical difference? If you mean going to the computer seeing that it's unplugged and plugging it back in is worse than straining the 10baseX connector until the wire, connector, or card broke or was intermittently bad, I guess LocalTalk is worse.

Microsoft did not build NT from the ground up. NT started on the MIPS R4000 with help from DEC's OSIX, OSF/1, BSD, and VMS. I believe all of which were written in C before microsoft started writing windows in vi on Xenix. NT wasn't released until 96.

Near the same time, DEC turned down Apple when Apple approached DEC about jumping ship from 680x0 to the Alpha processor. The only reason Apple jumped to PowerPC was because "DEC couldn't bring itself to work with Apple." No doubt due to Microsoft pulling strings to prevent Apple from getting into the platform that would probably have crushed Intel/Microsoft desktop dominance, had Intel not stollen designs from the Alpha processor group and inserted them into the Pentium II. Notice how NT/XP/2k/2k3 use ARC boot syntax in boot.ini from Alpha ARC BIOS or how closely ComDECpaqHP is with microsoft?

Oh, and while you're going to bash apple for running 68k code in emulation on PowerPC, At least Apple gave you something that worked, as slow as it was. I guess microsoft and intel never emulated anything, that wowexec program must just be for show. And all that microcode in the CPU, there's no emulation there!

Apple never tried to get out of the current trend of things or anything: MkLinux, Copeland, AIX, Rhapsody. They couldn't convince their user base to jump ship to a new platform or operating system without the applications already in place, and nobody wanted to write for Windows and MacOS as it was. Is it a problem yes, but hardly an apple specific one.

"Imagine using a machine that didn't have virtual memory and ran out of memory [if you didn't have enough]..." Imagine using a machine where nobody will ever need more than 640k, nobody will ever need more than 15 IRQs, nobody will ever need more than 3 DMA channels, nobody will ever need more than one MFM/RLL hard drive controller, nobody will ever need more than one VGA card, all cards will run at 8.3MHz for all eternity, all cards and BIOS's will be ISAPnP, all CPUs will be genuine Intel, there will always be enough conventional memory, and all drivers run in real mode and there will never be any conflicts.

You're right, it is ridiculous.
Debian is at 2.2 (IIRC), a more reasonable number, although a little on the low side.

Slackware jumped becasue Volkerding decided that his distro couldn't compete against the others when they started artificially bumping up the numbers, so he jumped his from 4 to 7.

Since then, distro's seem to inflate their numbers to stay ahead of the competition, I guess since people don't understand that Libranet 2.1 is not older than Mandrake 10. (Notice the number of references to "Linux 9.0" on the Internet?)

How about NetBSD?
Talk about low version numbers, they're at 1.6.1.
They've gone from 0.8 in '93 to 1.6.1 in 2003.

I don't believe they make changelogs for current builds. For a general overview of new features, and possibly some insight as to how much work this will be, look at the NetBSD guide, specifically section 2. You may also want to browse the mailing list archives for gotchas.
