FreeBSD is safe. We've already been through a big law suit. There's been no UNIX code in FreeBSD for years. Many closed-source projects (including MS) have used BSD code.

OTOH, there may not be any IBMs sponsoring FreeBSD (don't get me started, either. IBM is only on the bandwagon to sell more servers.), but a majority of the major open-source apps are designed with FreeBSD in mind.

Apache and PostgreSQL are both developed on (on, not for) FreeBSD. Yes, www.apache.org is powered by FreeBSD. So is Yahoo! Hell, use NetCraft.com to confirm that the above sites are powered by FreeBSD, and while you're at it, check out what powers NetCraft. You'd be suprised.

I don't think anyone who allows FrontPage extensions to run on their web site should be taken seriously as a Free Software or Open Source advocate. Reason being that mod_dav is standard and competely servicable for the same function (except it doesn't support Microsoft FrontPage authoring AFAIK).

It looks to me like this OpenForum Europe is a fly-by-night operation anyway. They have almost NO web presence, which belies both involvement and advocacy of existing Free Software and Open Source projects.

implement it in itself: Not sure what your point is, but you can certainly implement the Python VM in itself. The Python VM is actually quite portable as is demonstrated by the excellent Java based implementation found in Jython.

Too dog slow? Uh, no. See the Twisted project for an example of an "internet event server" whose web server implementation is faster-- and more flexible-- than apache.

Twisted Web is "fast enough", and nobody seems seriously interested in optimizing it, but I would hesitate to boldly claim it's "faster than" something else if it doesn't have a clear advantage. I'd have no problem if you said it was faster than Jigsaw, for example: if you want to talk about dog-slow systems, that's a good example.

With a real production webserver like Apache, though, there are a lot of variables to tune. There are obscure interactions to be taken into account. Twisted will surely be slower than well-configured Apache on an SMP system, for example, unless you've got 2 processes working in parallel behind a proxy... and of course, then there's dynamic content, which is an entirely different set of measurements.

The issues are complex, and it doesn't help to advocate the project by oversimplifying them.

iPlanet was rebranded by Sun as the Sun ONE line - not just the webserver but the appserver, webserver, mail.. sorry 'Messaging' server, and also includes their new IM server talked about here.

Admittedly still at 1% in the webserver space (from here), but you can be sure that that 1% is SME and greater - paying customers. Sun do just fine out many of the large chunks of business software like these that they sell (naturally together with their hardware).

do you know why viruses/worms/trojans are designed with windows in mind? of course you'll reply with the knee-jerk "because it's so easy", but you won't think of the biggest reason. so i'll tell you. it's because of the huge market base of windows.
Call it a knee jerk if that makes it easier for you to handle. The fact is, it is easier for them on windows vs other OS's. All of the "enhancements" that M$ builds in scream to be taken advantage of. Thanks to all of their wonderful enhancements, there are worms sent via email that don't even have to be opened by the user to spread. I don't know about you, but that sounds pretty darn easy to me. I never said *ix OS's didn't have their faults, sure there has been a worm or two, but I can count them on one hand.

As far as compromises go, the last time I checked, windows servers are compromised twice as much as *ix os servers. And before you give the "knee jerk" response of "there are more of them", let me point you to the latest netcraft survey. According to this, Apache has almost a 70% market share, and the vast majority of that runs on a platform other than windows. Yet Code Red and Nimda were both IIS worms.

So if I'm to use your methods, and I want to make a name for myself, I'd create a worm that targetted the platform with the most hosts connected to the internet, correct? Well, thats apache, not IIS. So I think it's safe to say that people target windows because it IS easier.

I mean for crying out loud, 2000 server came with IIS enabled, WTF?

Oh, and as far as your rebooting issues go... If you're rebooting your linux box as much as your windows platform, thats a sign of your incompetence, not the OS's.

Netcraft seems to have a bit of a positive view toward BSD

Look at last month's Netcraft survey and scroll down to the
"Totals for Active Servers Across All Domains" graph.
Note that IIS increased until about 2002-04, when it leveled off.
Compare that to Apache which continues it's rocky climb into 2003.
The numbers suggest that neither one is actually displacing the other yet.
I.e. few, if any, are replacing IIS with Apache.

Three Cheers for opensource, but take a look at the web server market share chart referenced in the posting and see if you can find a point where IIS had anything close to "market dominance." If Apache displaced anything it was NCSA.

But if you look at the graph linked from the article, you see that IIS never dominated Apache. Apache has held a comfortable lead from the beginning, about 2 to 1, which is roughly where it is today. There's no way IIS ever had "market dominance".

The only sense in which it did was that a few years ago, open source wasn't on the public radar so people just compared IIS to other commercial products. Now that's changed and Apache is recognized as being dominant. But it always was. The only thing that's changed is the perception.

If you actually go look at that graph, Microsoft is still second best, and way ahead of all the others in the field (aside from Apache, of course). I would hardly call that "Slaughtered, wiped out, taken from market dominance to irrelevance"...

Ellison's prophetic comments, much like Scott McNealy of Sun, are generally worthless: If one looked at his historical claims they would find an astoundingly poor accuracy of their predictions. At some point shouldn't someone call him on his abilities as a seer?

The most ridiculous part of his comments that immediately pointed out how uninformed and idiotic his vitriolic claims are is the statement "They had a virtual monopoly on Web servers, and then they were wiped off the face of the earth. And it's going to happen to them again on Linux.". The Slashdot summary itself points to the Netcraft graph, but strangely fails to points out the absurdity of Ellison's statement: Microsoft has never had a "virtual monopoly" on web servers. Indeed, Microsoft was an underdog, came into the game after Apache, and has grown to 28%, gaining 5% or so during a period when Apache marketshare has remained constant.

P.S. Ellison is going to have to develop a new angle to push Oracle - When SQL Server trounced them in the clustered results on the TPC-C, Ellison and friends proclaimed that clustered results don't count, getting the TPC to allow one to separate clustered and non-clustered. Well now Microsoft beats Oracle at non-clustered results too. I'm sure there'll be some new angle to defend against this.

Looking at the figures it doesn't look to me like IIS has gone from market leader to irrelevance. For the last 5 years - since IIS appeared - Apache has maintained a market share roughly twice that of IIS. But both shares have grown.
