Uh, you misread part of the complaint.

USB 1x1 isn't the same as USB 1.1. The latter is a spec. The former refers to the antenna configuration. The poster was taking issue with the lack of MIMO and single-band radio, not speed of the USB bus.

Adblock doesn't allow you to hardcode in your favorite websites into it so you don't make DNS server calls and so you can avoid tracking by DNS request logs, hosts do (DNS servers are also being abused by the Chinese lately and by the Kaminsky flaw -> http://www.networkworld.com/news/2008/082908-kaminsky-flaw-prompts-dns-server.html [networkworld.com] for years now). Hosts protect against those problems via hardcodes of your fav sites (you should verify against the TLD that does nothing but cache IPAddress-to-domainname/hostname resolutions via NSLOOKUP, PINGS, &/or WHOIS though, regularly, so you have the correct IP & it's current)).

* NOW - Some folks MAY think that putting an IP address alone into your browser's address bar will be enough, so why bother with HOSTS, right? WRONG - Putting IP address in your browser won't always work IS WHY. Some IP adresses host several domains & need the site name to give you the right page you're after is why. So for some sites only the HOSTS file option will work!

6.) Hosts files don't eat up CPU cycles like AdBlock does while it parses a webpages' content, nor as much as a DNS server does while it runs. HOSTS file are merely a FILTER for the kernel mode/PnP TCP/IP subsystem, which runs FAR FASTER & MORE EFFICIENTLY than any ring 3/rpl3/usermode app can.

7.) HOSTS files will allow you to get to sites you like, via hardcoding your favs into a HOSTS file, FAR faster than DNS servers can by FAR (by saving the roundtrip inquiry time to a DNS server & back to you).

8.) AdBlock doesn't let you block out known bad sites or servers that are known to be maliciously scripted, hosts can and many reputable lists for this exist:

I was pretty happy with Bloglines until it was to be killed in 2010 (a white knight rescued it, http://www.networkworld.com/news/2010/110510-bloglines-shutdown-avoided-as-merchantcircle.html but I had already switched to google reader by that time). I'd consider returning to it, since it remains alive, though am also open to some of the other alternatives being shared.

Screw the realities of advertising. If a site is willing to risk infecting their viewers and themselves for a few extra bucks a month, and they block me for using NoScript, they (and their advertisers) don't deserve my business.

Is it always the fault of the business partner? If only there was a recent precedent which shows that Cisco not only charges a premium, but an absurd premium, which can be on the back of the American tax payer. Of course there is such evidence. Quite a bit faster results happens with smaller blocking addresses noted below, due to smaller filesize for looped programmatic reads by the IP stack of the hosts file, & NOTICEABLY SO!

(As it's linearly related to the diff here between these filesizes being read in, where large size differentials result):

First time accepted submitter (and networkworld.com staff writer) Brandon Butler writes overblown and hyperbolic article, gets it on the /. front page. Nearly 5 quadrillion bucks earned from ad clicks. Slashdot down the drain? Business as usual.

Yes, coondoggie is Michael Cooney, a news editor at Network World. He spends hours every day spamming his articles to Slashdot, Hacker News, etc. Why Slashdot editors continue to reward this sort of bad behavior is beyond me: his "articles" are rarely more than a quick, semi-accurate summary of someone else's article on another site.

When a bug report is received, it gets evaluated and prioritised. It can take a non trivial time to track down and fix the bug (and any associated bugs in similar code). It takes time to test it in all the platforms and configurations (they have had to hastily recall patches in the past where the fix does more damage than the original bug).

It probably goes through some review process before being merged into the main code line (large companies can't allow anarchy with their code edits). Finally, patches are buffered to a schedule to allow their clients to plan for their own testing and application of patches.

All this takes time. You can make a system where you don't have this level of beurocracy, but that can cause its own problems and delays. So why did this specific Java bug take five months to fix? Without being privy to their processes we can't say for sure. Perhaps the extra step of outsourcing the fix to a third world country took a bit more time!

Maybe it was totally random- à la Steve Jobs?

But... but... but... the Office document formats have been documented! Third-party compatibility shouldn't be an issue any more. Nor should MS have to rely on a quarter century of some of the cruftiest code on the planet to maintain their monopoly. They can simply create new apps with more flexible (and comprehensible) UIs and modern, efficient code to replace the legacy Office.

Yes, I know this was sarcasm, but it's still worth elaborating upon.

The modern Office file formats are indeed properly documented. The problem is that the formats are themselves heavily influenced by legacy crap, so the design is incredibly baroque and runs well into thousands of pages. You'd need a major corporate-led effort to get good compatibility with OOXML; independent developers aren't going to be able to do it. And even Google has had trouble with it in the past. (Perhaps they've gotten better by now; this article is about 20 months old.)

But with legacy Office documents, and with crap like macros and VBA, even Microsoft probably doesn't really know how they work any more. I actually fielded a call from a family friend a few days ago about being unable to open Word 2.0 and WordPerfect documents in Office 2007. (Apparently they still use those ancient programs in some departments of the organization he consults for.) Turns out that Word supports these formats, but it's turned off by default for "security reasons". In other words, they have a ton of old legacy code that doesn't meet modern security standards and that they can't or won't rewrite, but is needed for backwards compatibility. So they just turn it off by default and sort of hope it will eventually go away.
