GNAA announces plans to bomb Christmas island
GNAA announces plans to bomb Christmas island
by GNAA Staff
Due to recent AUP policy changes at .cx NIC, one of the key GNAA sponsored websites, http://goatse.cx has been found "in violation of .cx AUP policies". This announcement delivered a huge blow to the GNAA organization.
Without goatse.cx, we lose an important piece of GNAA.
"We will not let this happen", GNAA representative goat-see said to the press. "GNAA will begin planning a terrorist attack on the Christmas Islands."
GNAA currently operates a back-up site, also located at the .cx TLD, http://goat.cx. Users are welcome to use this website while we try to persuade .cx NIC to reinstate goatse.cx domain.
"In the event that our peaceful negotiations will fail, Christmas islands are sure to be gone off the face of this planet", added another GNAA member, penisbird.

And this domain was mainly used for?
Christmas Islanders will be scenting a business opportunity...
-
Re:How ironic
What do you expect? It's on an island, after all...
:-) -
Re:I can see it now
Well,
.cx is for Christmas Island, and it just wouldn't be right nuking them at this time of the year, would it? -
Private Domains
There are private domains already.
.CX is for the country Christmas Island. They do not give out private info on anyone. Their privacy policy is pretty good and is here.
I love my .CX domains. To register one you go to www.netdns.cx and spend $37 for the first year. Then you spend $37 for every two years after that.
And yes, more website use .cx then that stupid goat guy. www.oralse.cx is one of the funniest sites around.
I haven't got any spam ever for the domains that I registered. This is better then the .COM proxy... because with the proxy ownership you don't really own the stinking domain! What happens if your site gets HUGE and they threaten you to start paying more or they take away your domain. :( -
Re:But what everyone who reads /. wants to know is
Sadly, nic.cx's whois query won't retun that information.
-
Re:It's not THAT hard..I live a few blocks from the beach on a tropical island
...That wouldn't happen to be Christmas Island, would it?
-
Re:Anyone else...
When in doubt about a TLD, try http://nic.tld and see what comes up
;)
It is in fact Christmas Island: http://www.nic.cx/
- Jman -
But they can't handle it ...
... if the
.cx ccTLD is any indication. ICAN'T has been blocking redelegation for over a year now without stating any reason as far as I understand. The shit really hit the fan when Planet Three (who initiated the redelegation in June 2000) became insolvent. Those who were using their e-mail and web forwarding services simply disappeared from the Internet. Those who are running their own nameservers should cross their fingers and hope they don't need to change their DNS entries, because they can't. All this because ICAN'T was unable to transfer control of the TLD to nic.cx within 12 months !
You can read about it here: http://www.nic.cx/cx.home.cfm
The IANA page still lists the wrong contact information: http://www.iana.org/root-whois/cx.htm
If they are unable to keep their existing database in order, how can they possibly manage new top-level domains ? -
Christmas Island's TLD: ".cx" Really.
If you ever wondered what the
.cx in "goatse.cx" stood for, now you know. CX is the TLD for Christmas Island.(The link points to a somewhat broken site, but it gets the point across.) -
Re:Who owns goatse.cx??
You should be able to find out at: http://www.nic.cx/whois.cfm but there appears to be a problem on their backend right now, because when I hit query it says "connect error". Hmmm... a problem on the backend when I query. Somehow, that seems appropriate.
Regardless of who he is, he's missing out on a lot of ad revenue. If you're gonna be a pornographer, you might as well make money.

Re:.cx?
nic.cx says it's for Christmas Island.
As does the English country names and code elements page on the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency Web site. (The French country names and code elements page says it's "CHRISTMAS, ÎLE".)

Re:.cx?

for all you conspiracy theorists..
It's been widely speculated that the reasons
.biz and .arts and the other .vapor TLDs never came to pass is because of pressure from business groups who want to ensure the namespace becomes as small as possible to ensuring nobody infringes their copyrights/trademarks/whatever. The more new TLDs we have, the more different variations on their name Disney and the 300 other agressively defensive businesses have to register. (of course, the fact that every corporation simply registers itself in every single TLD defeats the purpose of new TLDs in the first place, but whatever.)
If you take it as given that the above paragraph is actually true, then .gnu has a pretty good chance of getting approved. After all, make a TLD in which each group must be certified as open-source, and you neatly throw out the problem of copyright disputes. I mean, orgainize nothing but free/open software and you don't have domains with copyrighted names, because all the projects are copylefted. Hence, no worries for the Men In Suits, who feel reassured by the fact the TLD isn't open to all comers. Hence, no political/monetary "pressure" on ICANN. Hence, nothing bars it, and the OSS people get a TLD.
Now, of course, you could claim that they [the Suited People] would be scared more, because free software people tend to defend their copylefted ground rather fiercely, but you'd be wrong. A .gnu TLD may result in some Etoy Vs Etoys type disputes, but in the end the fact is that there will never be a coca-cola.gnu or ford.gnu or a microsoft.gnu-- and no huge corporations feeling "threatened". (silly word to use there, i know..)
(oh, and on that last note: what if a company does _some_ open source but not _all_? Apple, as part of their Darwin project, has released code under their own APSL but has also given out [or at least is about to give out] some code *cough* *cough* EGCS enhancements *cough* as GPLed (mostly for the purpose of being integrated into an existing GPLed codebase..). Based on this, should apple get an apple.gnu TLD to map to publicsource.apple.com, even though the majority of the software there is not actually GPLed?)
As for "does the FSF deserve a TLD"..? well, hell, they give them to countries, right? I honestly think that the GNU foundation has a bigger impact on geopolitics than Christmas Island.
Unfortunately the whole question becomes very painful when you bring up the question of What About BSD? and What About Qt/KDE? I'd like to hope any TLD made will have a more loose definition of "free" than "the GPL". [i like the LGPL better personally, but that's a flamewar for another day..].. In other words i'd just be a hell of a lot happier with .fsf than with .gnu, because .gnu implies less [and avoids the pronunciation problems mentioned in earlier threads..] -
Re:National tld's cost money? Are you shitting me?
What are they gonna do? Give ".fr" to someone else?
Maybe not France, but it could happen to a smaller ccTLD like
.cx , Christmas Island. -
Re:domain names
I know the Christmas Island registry gives free domain names to nationals. (Of course, it's still first-come first-served for choosing names).
-
Re:Other domains...
I personally prefer
.cx, myself; they're cheaper, have great service, VERY nice policies (particularly when it comes to namespace conflicts such as in the case of trademark disputes - they'll only remove/freeze a registration with a court order), and, recently, have taken to providing free service for free(speech) and open source software projects.

"'Is not a quine' is not a quine" is a quine. -
Caution!
I would suggest that exercising caution would be the flavour of the day here
Not meaning to defame the offer presented in any way; in fact this has less to do with free registrations at nic.cx as it has to do with the premium ones.
You see, as everyone on /. reads this, many of you feel the need to whip out your credit cards and buy yourself a little chunk of digital Christmas Island :) - but beware!
The same time you are whipping out your CC, someone else may be whipping out their packet sniffer - mainly because they know that with a /. article there will be high traffic and more transactions than normal; leading to a greater chance of our parasitic little friend landing himself a catch.......
Im not saying that Slashdot is full of these guys (and gals) just waiting to pounce but there maybe one or two - so just be careful.
I would suggest waiting a couple of days for far better security ;)
There, thats my little piece said, now you can all tell me how paranoid I am :)) -
Corrected URL and minor caution
Actually, the link should be to this question.
I registered a domain with them, and all worked well back when Slashdot first reported that they were up and running. They were free at first, but made it clear that a charge was comming. It looks like they intend for the Open Source project domains to be free forever, but I'd get that in writing if I were you.... -
Australian Net Censorship?Free hosting of open source projects is "A Good Thing" and should be encouraged as much as possible, but one thought occurred to me which is that according to the government page:
" Christmas Island's full title is the Territory of Christmas Island. This is because it is an external territory of Australia. It is not autonomous, and falls under the authority of the Governor General of Australia and Australian Law."
Now, does that mean that all domains hosted under the .cx domain are subject to Australian regulations concerning content? Does the usage of a particular country's domain force you to abide by their rules, even if the servers are not physically located in the country in question? -
Whois Question & foreign Top-level recommendation
With other registrants out there, are there alternate whois sources? I'd love to alias my 'whois' command so it queries a server without all that legal B.S. In terms of registration, I had a good experience registering both my domains, dogsplayingpoker.cx & vulpine.cx with nic.cx, which is the Christmas Island top-level domain. They were about $30 US for two years for each, although you have to pay with a credit card/in UK pounds. They helped me out a few times when I lost my registration handle like a moron, responding very quickly to my email. Plus, you can visit their website and dream about a tropical island vacation.
-
Re:Early Bird Gets the Worm
Actually in AU to register a
.com.au you need to register a business name. Since these are all supposed to be unique, there should be no problems (in theory).
But as for me, I've got a .cx domain so I hope no-one will bother me there. -
Gah.It's bullshit like this why I'm glad all my domains are Christmas Island. Not only do I get better and cheaper service than NSI domain holders, but they have very strict privacy policies, you can even opt out of being visible in the whois database, and in the case of trademark contention they'll only act based on a court order, end of story. And they're hosted by a British company, too, so I don't think even an American court order would suffice - it'd have to be tried in the British courts. Maybe that's not as good a thing though.
:) .cx domains rule. They're relatively uncommon and not even close to saturated, you get an insanely long "free" period to play with a domain (and technically it'd be possible to never have to pay for a domain, though that's quite dishonest), and if you want uniqueness, no better way than that. "Dot cx? That's weird man... must be some cool thing!"Oh, and they only have authenticated web-based access for modification. I don't think they use https, though, but then again, email-based NSI updates aren't exactly secure either.
This just settles it for me. I'm never going to trust NSI with any domainnames.
---
"'Is not a quine' is not a quine" is a quine. -
Re:OffTopic tf = French Southern Territories
http://nic.tf refers to:
http://www.adamsnames.tc/
Which also sells .tc, .vg., .ms and .gs as well as .tf domains - all $50 each.
pi.gs is taken :-(
Christmas Islands at http://nic.cx is still cheaper at 20 UK pounds (~$30). -
internic alternatives
I like
.cx myself. They give you a month free, and are about $17/year.
---
"'Is not a quine' is not a quine" is a quine. -
Another reason for alternate domains?
This may be another argument for using alternate domains other than the 'big 3,' besides the lower cost. My domains on the
.cx hierarchy have never been in question.
