Re:When things lasted
Back in the 90s, a company called Northgate Computer Systems,
You're looking for a CVT Avant Prime or Avant Stellaris. CVT bought out Northgate and continued to sell the keyboards but appear to have stopped selling them as of last year (yes, 2011.) Your best bet today is Bob Tibbets or Matt Morse, who have kept the Northgate flame alive. (A recent review.) Tibbets and Morse maintain a small stock of keyboards for sale.

Re:Keyboards no, $750 RAID cards yes
You can contact This guy, as I'm told he fixed any kind of keyboards with Alps switches, specially Northgates.
Otherwise you could try to fix it yourself, as a mechanical keyboard you could replace the broken spring with the spring of another switch (a less used key like Scroll-Lock or PrintScreen).
Alps switches can be disassembled without having to desolder from the PCB, give it a try. -
Re:There is only one keyboard
I use Hot Keyboard Pro to create macros.
It allows you to create app-specific bindings for any key, and can even record and play back mouse moves if you want. The macros are editable, so you can tweak them after recording.
I use the Northgate Omnikey Ultra, which gives me 12 extra function keys that I can use for macros.
I can't say enough good things about my Omnikey, which has been used pretty much every day of it's 15-year life. It gives me the best feel for everything but games that won't auto-repeat buttons (it's not good for fast, repeated hammering on the same key), and has a full arrow keypad instead of the nasty inverted-T.

Re:You'd need fewer mice if they were built to las
I don't use particularly old mice because I keep upgrading for features, but my everyday computer keyboard is over 15 years old: Northgate Omnikey Ultra
Most of the older mice still work fine, but are in the parts bin in case I need a quick replacement.

Northgate Omnikey Ultra
No one has mentioned my favorite keyboard of all time: the Northgate Omnikey Ultra. I could set the control key to the left of the A key. There was a second set of F keys in a double row on the left side. The return key was big and so was the backspace key. There was a dedicated asterisk * key underneath the right shift key. And it clicked. Here is a picture: http://www.northgate-keyboard-repair.com/ultra.jpg
This was a typist's keyboard. The keys were even color coded for WordPerfect functions. There was a utility included to remap the keyboard. I bought several but after years of intensive use they are now all gone to keyboard heaven. -
Re:Ergonomic with Buckling Springs?
One of the sites posted previously has an Omnikey Evolution that might be what you're looking for. Go there, and look for "Evolution". You apparently need to e-mail the guy for info and pricing.

Re:Won't someone please think of the children?
That's got to be the widest 'standard' keyboard I've ever seen in my life! Where will our obsession with function keys end? First the PC/XT layout put them on the left-hand side, then the AT layout put them along the top.
Too young to remember the Northgate keyboards?
I think this kybd is teh hawt, and I'd get one just so that I could map my WoW shortcut icons, or run futura modern keycaps.. Kubrick would DIE for one of these if he hadn't already... -
Northgate Omnikey
If you're looking for a bulletproof keyboard and extrememly responsive keys, get a Northgate Omnikey. You can find them on eBay, or buy one from this guy.

The Northgate OmniKey is the Holy Grail
Sorry, as nice as the 'M' is, there is no comparison to a Northgate Omnikey, especially the Ultra
.I still have one. It weighs over 10 pounds, so it doesn't move. The feel of the keys is heavenly - perfect amount of force to depress, and a wonderful click when you do. All the keys are where they should be, including a superior diamond pattern for the cursor keys.
If you haven't used one, you don't know what you're missing. Northgates are still the golden standard for anyone who knows.
