Lotus Notes is already in the list of pre-made 'connectors', as are Active Directory, Exchange, iPlanet Directory Server, IBM SecureWay Directory, PeopleSoft, Oracle, IBM DB2, Sybase, and even Delimited Text files.

I don't know if it would put Notes 'over the top'. From what I hear, the problem with Notes is that companies need an in-house developer before it really begins to shine.

So if a company already has a Notes developer, adding an XML based engine to push and pull data from a plethora of sources might be the ticket.

On the other hand, my company was looking at Single Sign On products - of which Novell has one (and yes, it leverages eDirectory). Tivoli also has a SSO product, which relied on their own directory. From their point of view, my company ought to abandon this great directory we already have, and adopt their directory, on dedicated servers. Their SSO product would do the job - but implementing it would have made our life harder, not easier. If you already have Tivoli, I'm sure it would have made sense.

To sum up, yes Novell has products that, as a part of an IBM toolkit, ought to make Microsoft worry. To me, the killer app that Notes is best at is workflow - and adding really robust I/O could could only help. Don't know if it would be worth the price of acquisition though.

One word: eDirectory

One feature that Linux lacks in the datacenter is a directory. eDirectory is what used to be known as NDS. Novell ported it to Linux a few years ago...

ZENWorks works on even more platforms. I know that PDA's are supported as well. Plus now, with ZENWorks 4 you don't even need a NetWare client installed.
GroupWise, their Messaging service is Rock Solid as well. No virus problems. The GW database is encrypted by default. You can enable encryption on server to server communication. You have SSL support for the web client & a wireless solution for your PDA again.
Their documentation is very detailed. Their knowledge base has had years to grow & is organized by TID numbers. Their TID are very detailed about the problem, the solution or work around & what versions of software are affected. Since Novell purchased us 3 months ago, we have increased our investment in all of our products, using Novell's resources. And we've been aggressive about driving open source and Linux throughout the company.

Here's a little evidence, all postdating the acquisition by Novell:

- My notes on our new desktop development center in Bangalore
- An article from the Times of India about our new developers there
- The freshly-published (today!) Mono Roadmap showing where we're going with the development platform
- The first entry in our new Evolution blog, describing the plans for Evolution 2.0, to be released early next year
- The announcement and wiki for the Brooklyn GNOME developer's summit we are sponsoring this month
- The announcement that our Exchange connector now supports Exchange 2003

And this is really just the beginning. As you can imagine, most of the super exciting stuff we are doing is behind the scenes.

From time to time since we were acquired three months ago I've heard people say things like "Novell bought Ximian just for XYZ," where XYZ has been either: Mono, our Exchange 2000 connector, GNOME, Evolution, Red Carpet, "the name," ...

I think it should be clear that this is ridiculous.

Yes, we will still support KDE on SuSE. However, we hope to use this opportunity to provide Linux developers and ISVs with a single stable platform for desktop application development.

Yes, we will keep the desktop distro free. We will even make things more free than they have been.

We're only just getting started. Stay tuned.

But have they done anything interesting? Will they be a contributing member of the community? Why should I get excited about Novell?

They've had their own Sourceforge clone up for a year or 2, hosting a few dozen projects.

Some of this stuff is unsupported, but some of it is official Novell stuff, like their ConsoleOne developer's kit, or the NW version of PHP, Perl etc.

We're not talking NW3.12, SYSCON and FIRE PHASERS anymore, the latest NetWare comes with MySQL, Perl and PHP right on the installation CDs.

These guys aren't going to open up the really awesome stuff (NDS, the NetWare base OS), but they've become pretty good at opening up their add-on tools etc.

It looks like there is a web cast at 11 AM EST. Perhaps we will learn some useful information on what Novell is planning.

It seems like you are pro-open-source, but don't dismiss the commercial products completely. Novell's ZENworks for Desktops (ZfD) product is quite simply amazing! It also happens to do exactly what you're talking about.

Does it require Novell servers? No, it does not. You can read more from the ZENworks documentation at Novell's website. Read the ZENworks 4 docs. ZENworks 6 is a bundle of ZENworks 4 for Desktops and ZENworks for Servers and ZENworks for Handhelds.

I once read about a university (I think in the UK) that managed 30,000 Windows desktops with only six people! Also, the largest companies on the planet tend to favor ZENworks for Desktops over SMS for deploying patches.

My computer support group uses ZfD to manage about 1,500 computers whose configurations vary widely from P2-400's to P4-3.06 Ghz boxes running anything from Win98 to WinXP. About 400 machines are in labs, but the rest are faculty or staff desktops. ZfD is extremely flexible. ZfD has an imaging solution, but is not limited to that.

ZfD imaging boots up a Linux agent first, either from the hard disk or by booting it over the network from the ZfD server or from a bootable CD-ROM. This agent checks Novell eDirectory to see what it should do (store an image of this workstation on the server, install an image onto the workstation, or other tasks). Once the image has been transferred, the computer reboots into Windows. Each time the computer boots, ZfD will check to see if it should perform an imaging task; if not, then it just boots Windows. ZfD can also add software to the base image on-the-fly!

Alternately, you can automate an install of Windows (just the base OS, with patches). Then install the ZfD agent and let it install all the other software for you. This solution is the ultimate in flexiblity, but requires you to have a pretty intimate knowledge of how Windows and ZENworks function, like what registry entries are dangerous to deploy to other workstations.

A combination of imaging and software deployment is an excellent way to get a workstation installed quickly and have a large selection of software available. You can deploy a small image (Windows, ZfD agent) and allow the ZfD agent to install other software as needed by the users. For example, ZfD can put items on the Start menu and when the user clicks on that item for the first time, ZfD installs the software. Rarely does one need to reboot.

ZENworks is probably the best solution available for managing large numbers of Windows desktops. It is powerful and flexible. Like many powerful tools, it is also a double-edged sword. It can easily deploy a patch and fix thousands of workstations, but if you deploy the wrong registry entry, you can just as easily break thousands of workstations. This is why you have to know Windows inside and out.

Finally, Novell has really good discounts for education. If you don't already have it available to you, check into it.

Novell is dead? Thats news to me! And I'm sure it comes as quite a shock to the millions of customers still using old proprietary Novell networks! Actually, come to think of it, I started hearing that Novell was dying about 7 or 8 years ago when I last worked in a Novell shop. And as much as I was overjoyed at this thought, it appears that not only are they not dying, it also appears their stock has done pretty well over the last 6 months.

I believe you are mistaken. Novell plans to offer two paths for Netware 7 customers. One for those intetersted in continuing to use the Netware kernel and another Linux offering. I quote from an article in the July/August Novell Connection magazine.

"Novell wants to make it perfectly clear that it will continue to develop, enhance and support NetWare, while ensuring that its NetWare and Linux offerings easily co-exist."

You are correct that Novell will offer services for enterprise which will run on Linux, but the Netware OS is certainly not going away. Linux is going to be another option that they hope will help them generate revenue from open source software.

I can't speak for the folks in the .mil area, though I know quite a few that have went into companies like Mitre after leaving the service. I got picked up right out of college into .gov,--- things were definitely behind the times. AOS/VS on the servers and MS-DOS at the desktop. I worked as a sysadmin through SCO Unix, Win3.11, NT4.0 and Exchange 5.5. Over the first six years I saw around 40+ states of the US, as well as Guam, Saipan and Japan - a good road trip all on the taxpayers dime. At the same time, the pay was good at the end but looooow for the first couple years. The last two have been the best as we are all Windows 2000/ XP on Dell desktops and a mix of Netware, Wintel, Solaris and yes, some Red Hat on the server side. Some of the stuff about .gov IT is true, laziness, lack of security, blah, blah, blah. I am in my mid 30s (the youngest on an IT staff of seven) but trying to improve the situation for my end users and they see that. Compared to the sysadmin that left that was in his 50s and read the newspaper all day- I am the man. You won't get rich doing .gov IT, but it is stable and can be rewarding.

I wouldn't bet my SCO stock on it - judging by Novell's recent firm commitment to GNU/Linux and their CEO's letter to Darl McBride himself.

It's nice to hear the GroupWise success story from time to time, but I hear far too many stories of it not working as desired - far more than the success ones... In-fact, of all the folks in our local Novell usergroup - only one other person/company still uses GroupWise - and with frequent complaints...

Encrypted mail storage on the server was a feature when access to the datastore was "direct" back in the pre 5.5 days. Now that client/server support in GW is stable, and that the users no longer have direct access to the datastore, there's no reason to keep the encryption. In-fact, this encryption hiders not only my ability to fix serious issues, it apparently hiders Novell's ability to diagnose issues as well; I've been working with them for almost a year now, on a GroupWise Denial of Service issue - where the database fails to clean up deleted emails from disk, though they disappear from the user's view once deleted from the GW or WebAccess interface... Every time I speak to a tech regarding this, they complain that it takes a long time to extract just a few messages from the message store and compare them against other aspects of the GW system. This is just one example of the many ways in which GW encryption causes issues...

As far as user privacy is concerned, if my users want privacy, they can use their home computers - not ones owned by the company, and administered by me. The GW system is company property, and as a result, the company as the right to search the systems as they see fit... Personally, I could care less what's in the email databases (unless it causes me issues - needs some manual fixing/attention), HR on the other hand sees things differently...

In regards to a flakey client - the underlying OS (Win32) by its very nature is flakey. Yet Win32 seems to do just fine with other email clients (Mozilla for example), even when they handle mailboxes three to four times what GW can handle. It's time to stop blaming the OS for everything - the GW client is seriously flawed... For example; it cannot support more than 5,000 messages per folder, nor messages with a body larger than 32K.

Based on past experience - using an Open File Manager on NetWare has proven to be very problematic, not only has NSS support been very poor, but overall, the use of OFM's have shown to significantly reduce the stability of our servers. No thanks, I enjoy my time off when I get it... I don't have stability issues in regards to my backups on Linux/Unix systems, I don't expect them on other systems either... Quite frankly, I don't know of any database vendor that recommends using a OFM to backup their database. They recommend using the tools they provide to dump the database to another medium (ie: spare disk, or even straight to tape), and Novell does not provide a good tool to do this, without constantly babysitting it. I wouldn't recommend anyone backup a live DB using an OFM. My major concern: The OFM essentially takes a copy of the DB/file at that instant in time, not taking into consideration the fact that it may be "snapshotting" a file in the middle of a series of writes related to each-other, among other issues...

As far as using gwbackup/dbcopy is concerned, you are aware that gwbackup is not supported for use with GroupWise 6.x - and considering anything before GW 6.x has been end-of-lifed... GWBackup has proven to be unreliable, and requires frequent babysitting. Though some at Novell may say otherwise, it was never designed to be a backup solution. GWBackup also requires a Win32 machine near each server. My NetWare servers are spread all over the globe - making this very impracticable.

Just yesterday came across an article on Novell's Coll Solutions site, where the user uses Search folders with defined criteria, instead of draggin & dropping in to several folders. Mailbox size: 1000+ items. Sorry. can't seem to find URL, but there are lots of tips @ GW Coolsolutions page
