Re:I've thought of this.
System load could be signified by clicks, with the frequency of the clicks increasing as system load increases.
Sounds like you're looking for this. Particularly, feature #3. It makes your computer sound like WOPPER in War Games. -
Re:RealmediaA TARA plug-in link would be in order. Dunno if it supports Winamp 5. (Details.).
Incidentally, there's no gpedit.msc in the Windows XP home edition.

NSV
Have you checked out Nullsoft's NSV?
Sure it requires Winamp 2.91 or higher (maybe not including 3) at the moment, but it's free for you and your users, and the quality is great. And they can either tune in to a stream or connect to an NSV file directly to play from the beginning.
Check out the example video's at Winamp.com and the available streams through the Winamp media library's internet TV browser. -

Sex is one of the more useful small windows apps.
Oh, and there seems to be an encrypted version out as now (safesex).

Re:where credit is due...
The first time I came across Nullsoft was mucking around in Plush. I was getting into 3D graphics, and plush really belted along on my Power Mac 6100/60. And what's this... source code!
I've written the graphics engine for a 3D visualisation package since then. The sharing of source code benefits the world. -
Re:Xmms on Windows?Winamp was Shareware for a time. It's never been free as in speech, to this date Nullsoft has not released the source to Winamp itself.
However, Winamp has pretty much always been free as in beer. Even when they had registration, there was a distinction between the Lite version and the Pro version. At one point I think they were even planning to do "adware" though I'm not sure if a release with that was ever done.
Over here is a complete archive of Winamp releases, except the none of the frelling links work. But you can see the release history at least. At a certain point, Nullsoft was bought by AOL and thus didn't need to do the shareware/registration thing anymore.
As for Open Source, Nullsoft has released a lot of OpenSource stuff, pretty much all for Windows. The most useful being their installer program, I've seen a lot of freeware packages use NSIS. Here's all the programs Nullsoft has released recently. I've always liked Nullsoft's naming approach...
(Historical note: One of the most popular plugins for Winamp has been Geiss, developed by Mr. Ryan Geiss. He originally wrote it independently. Then he got a job with Creative Labs working on Oozic, Creative's own idea for a media player with nifty visuals. Oozic started life as Lava but had to change names, probably for trademark reasons. Sadly, Creative Tech turned asswipe with Oozic, declaring it only available for those who bought their hardware and had it on the driver CD. Anyways, Mr. Geiss left Creative to go work for Nullsoft! Where he developed some more nifty visualization tools such as Milkdrop and Geiss II.)
(BONUS Historical note: Before Winamp, before multi-media players with visualization plugins, there was Cthugha by Kevin "Zaph" Burfitt. Cthugha started life as a DOS freeware program that did pretty VGA animations in synch with music from an audio CD. Eventually a version was developed for Windows 95, and 3D support was even added providing you used a 3DFX card. Sadly the project has languished for years now but not before Kevin released source and a number of folks ported Cthugha to MacOS, Linux, Java and yes, even a Winamp plugin!)

Re:Final?
Don't think so. There's already a alpha installer for v.6 (http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp/early/)

Re:Winamp 2 anyone?
Winamp 5 Lite is essentially just Winamp 2 with bugfixes. No video, media library or freeform skinning. Or just get the full version and deselect components on install.

There is a lite version available here, which doesn't include freeform skinning, or video, and is basically "old school" winamp2. And it's only 650kB.

Re:Someone please save WinAmp!!!Winamp 5 looks amazingly good. The Internet TV feature is the "Instant On" that Windows Media Player just couldn't get right. Funny thing is Winamp 5 betas are circulating, and seem to be actively developed with new betas released fairly frequently, but there's no mention on it on the Nullsoft or Winamp pages.
A Google search will find you lots of places to get it though.

*Neo voice* "Whoa"
As someone who has litterally stopped watching TV since the 1.2 beta release of Counter-Strike, I am really someone they want to reach.
The problem is, I don't even own a TV. Perhaps a alternative may exist already: Nullsoft TV
I like watching Futurama episodes when I've got the time, but going and sitting down, taking time out of my day to watch commercials for 15 minutes an hour doesn't really appeal to me. -
Re:finally a TOLERABLE VisualizationFor the best viz I'm aware of on Windows, get yourself Winamp 2.91 + Milkdrop.
All my housemates agree that Milkdrop looks nicer on my PC with generic gfx card and monitor than iTunes viz looks on my housemate's Dual G4 with TFT flatscreen - its awesome.
-
Re:iTunes
I guess us poor windows users can settle with Winamp (if you are using a version before 2.90 I suggest you upgrade if only for the media library. Not as good as itunes but a cool feature none the less).
The included AVS (advanced visualisation studio) is pretty good, and you can easily make your own visualisations. Also, if you really want to send your productivity down the drain i suggest you run winamp, start AVS, enable overlay mode (double click for config, go to settings->dispay), and change the overlay color to black (or whatever you use as the default font color). "Set desktop to color" is optional. Minimize winamp and enjoy.
I don't know about the towel the parent mentioned, but i'd keep a couple of aspirins handy ;-)

Re:Independent IM Client Futures
You may have missed this, but WASTE is once again available for download (there was a
/. story about it a while back) under the GPL, this time from sourceforge and not from commercial underling Nullsoft. While it is meant for a somewhat different purpose from Jabber, it's pretty easy to use, and works very well. For small networks, it means not having to even set up a server. Of course, it has some problems, like the fact that anyone can add someone to the network, but other than that it's pretty damned good. And, it supports encryption. -
Re:WASTE is coming back....?
Was there any resolution about the legality of using WASTE considering Nullsoft/AOL's revoked it?
From http://www.nullsoft.com/free/waste/:
NOTICE OF UNAUTHORIZED SOFTWARE
An unauthorized copy of Nullsoft's copyrighted software was briefly posted on this website on or about Wednesday May 28, 2003. The software was identified as "WASTE" (the "Software") and includes the files "waste-setup.exe", "waste-source.zip", "waste-source.tar.gz" and any additional files contained in these files.
Nullsoft is the exclusive owner of all right, title and interest in the Software. The posting of the Software on this website was not authorized by Nullsoft.
If you downloaded or otherwise obtained a copy of the Software, you acquired no lawful rights to the Software and must destroy any and all copies of the Software, including by deleting it from your computer. Any license that you may believe you acquired with the Software is void, revoked and terminated.
Any reproduction, distribution, display or other use of the Software by you is unauthorized and an infringement of Nullsoft's copyright in the Software as well as a potential violation of other laws.
Thank you.

Re:4 years and this is all they have....
Go ahead and force MS to sell those in the EU a copy w/o WMP. Now EU users will be forced to pay $30 to $40 to Real, Music Match, Quicktime, etc. to get the same functionality they get for free with WMP.
RealOne player: Here, free.
MusicMatch : Here, free.
QuickTime: Here, free.

Deja Vu
Wow, I'm just like that. All through college (3 of them) I had the same problems. I've been out of college for years now, although I do teach at the local community college sometimes.
Here's what works for me.
- I tell someone else what my goals are and how I'm doing on them. My wife works nicely for that. Very nicely in fact since she reminds me about the mortgage, groceries, etc. Her Work for Sex exchange program is an excellent motivator too. Or more often, no money = more headaches.
- I keep a piece of paper or white board handy and write down what I'm doing. I use it like a memory stack. Task A, A.1, A.1.1, and so on and I cross them off when I'm done. It's very easy when tracking a bug looking 12 different files and lots of different calling procedures and arguments to forget what your trying to accomplish in the first place. I used to go through a lot of paper, but it's helped me a lot.
- Use SafeSex Software - a nice little utility from the makers of Winamp. It's always on top and a quick way to jot down your thoughts instead of paper once you get used to it. It's a little box on the desktop that says STAY FOCUSED. You can make it say what you want.
- Since most of my projects involve using the same programs, I wrote a script to load them all at once on my desktop *AND* start my accounting program. Once I see that timer going and I know I'm billing the client, it's hard to start browsing the web. Since the IDE and Project files are open I get right to work.
- Put slashdot.org in my HOSTS file as 127.0.0.1. I haven't had to do that in a long time, but for a while I was using it way to much. I feeling much better now. :o) -
Easy Package ManagerEasy Package Manager (from the same people who brought you CUPS) solves all your UNIX needs. It can produce a package that is in the native format of each platform, in addition to having its own self extracting GUI installer.
InnoSetup on Windows is really good, although some people also swear by NSIS (NullSoft Installer (brought to you by the same people who did winamp.

You want real computer sounds? Re:Ahh, but you....
Nullsoft Beep is a little program that will make sounds like computers do in the movies! It is amusing to play around with.

Been there done that
Audio and video surfing is already here. It's called Winamp 2.91. Yeah it's got shoutcast built in and now a new thing called Internet TV which is basically Nullsoft Public Acces TV. It's starting to catch on too, there are a number of shows ranging from someone getting drive thru at taco bell to shows like Cartoon Network's Auqa Team Hunger Force. So who needs cable when you have a broadband connection.
-
geiss
The finished product. I installed it with Windows 98SE, APE (Atari Peripheral Emulator), and WinDVD. Also, for fun, I installed "drempels" for a psychedelic desktop.
Forget dremples, Geiss 2 just came out. Thanks for the heads up.
"Please remember to look away every 15 minutes." -
alternatives
Nullsoft's NSV, an encapsulation format currently using MP3 and VP3, and it is of course being supported by Winamp
Nullsoft's own channels, e.g. Radiohead Videos (500kbps) are using VP5 for video, so I guess this will be the future... -
Re:He hasn't resigned...Given that Google News is now listing more than 50 reports of his "resignation", perhaps the proverbial stone has been cast.
As as aside
... what the heck is with the crazy fonts on the current Nullsoft page? -
Re:Does GPL apply?
The code was written in house, and thus as the copyrighted property of AOL Time Warner.
Umm, no. Nullsoft's website says: "Nullsoft is the exclusive owner of all right, title and interest in the Software. The posting of the Software on this website was not authorized by Nullsoft."
-
except that they did have the rights
The code is (c) Nullsoft, and even AOL is not disputing this. The code is not (c) AOL Time Warner, which is an important distinction (Nullsoft is a subsidiary, and so a separate legal entity). Justin Frankel essentially is Nullsoft; he's a co-founder and principal developer. The code was released on the official Nullsoft website by him, the same way most other Nullsoft software is released. In short, the release followed the standard practice used by most other Nullsoft releases (most of which, like NetMon, are uncontroversial). This is Nullsoft release policy, and Justin is basically their release manager (for at least some of their stuff -- Winamp is handled separately). Simply because AOL disliked this particular release doesn't give them a legal leg to stand on in pulling it.

Re:My suspicionsNow, this is what I find interested: I couldn't find any other GPL software on the site, just stuff under some custom-written clickthrough redistribution allowed licences.
NSIS is under a BSD-style license, as is JNetLib, WWWinAmp, NetMon, Beep, NSCopy, SafeSex, Plush, and ASS I/O. Actually they admit on one of those pages to borrowing the license for (all of) the above from zlib.

Re:GPL - Source Posted
To me this looks like it's a cover up. Netscape has it's source located on cvs.mozilla.org and they aren't saying anything about that (and hell, a shitload of Netscape Proprietary stuff could be in there).
As far as I see, NullSoft had authorisation at local level. They released it thinking it was 'Go go go', but AOL said "Speak to our lawyers first". The GPL doesn't allow revocation. It probably was autorised.
NullSoft has other P2P stuff up it's sleeve -
Can AOL un-ring the bell?
The site that's there now claims that WASTE is owned by Nullsoft, and whomever posted WASTE on the server with a GPL license lacked the authority to do. As a result, AOL's view is that the GPL doesn't stick to the software because only Nullsoft held the copyright and Nullsoft didn't attach the GPL.
What a mess here... something that's really lacking from the new page is anything that says just how "unauthorized software" appeared on the nullsoft.com site.
- If they're claiming that they were hacked, this would have to go down as the hack of the century... I doubt that happened.
- If they're claiming an employee acted outside of their authority, aren't they responsible for restraining that employee's actions so they don't become visible to the public?
- If AOL's trying to overrule a decsion made by their Nullsoft division after learning about it, isn't that too little too late?
This has got to be one of the most interesting test cases of how the GPL works ever. -
Sorry to sayAs they say on the site, you're now officially pirating if you're using WASTE. You have no license to it or its source code. Since a 'rogue' group of employees have no right to release Nullsoft's software under that or any license. For those expecting a 404, the page now says:
NOTICE OF UNAUTHORIZED SOFTWARE
So, anyway, it's probably not different from the scores of things you pirate these days. Hell, the illegality will probably just increase the quanitity of downloads (and, perhaps, the cease and desist letters).

404's; Waste Offline.
Waste seems to have been taken offline for now, is this perhaps like when Gnutella was taken offline for a shortwhile when it was first

Has WASTE become another victim, like Gnutella ?
I clicked on the links to WASTE that /. has so generously provided, and I found out that both the Download Page and the Security Page of WASTE can't be accessed!
I wonder if WASTE have been removed from nullsoft.com, since nullsoft is owned by AOL?
