Now, I don't need to name any terrorist organization that has done more damage then a government. We give consent to the government to do some of the things they do.

I didn't give consent, unless you mean by not opposing it enough means giving consent. Actually when Bush ran when 2000 instead of voting for whom I wanted as president I specifically voted against Bush. I didn't want Gore as president either but I thought he'd be less bad than Bush, so when it came tyme to vote I selected Gore. But as far as I'm concerned that was a wasted vote and in 2004 Michael Badnarik got my vote. Though I disagree with some of his positions late last year and early this year I was supporting Ron Paul, now I'm watching to see who the Libertarian candidates are.

Oh, also "our" government supported some of those terrorists. And other bad guys. Up until his invasion of Kuwait the US supported Saddam. Former president Bush, Sr, even argued before congress that trade sanctions against Iraq would hurt US trade as Reagan 's VP. And that was while Saddam was using WMDs. The US also supported al Quada and the Taliban, while they were fighting the Soviets, the US helped arm and finance them. Then Secretary of Defense Cheney even patted Saddam on the back. As late as 2001 President Bush supported the Taliban. For instance Bush gave them $43 million in May 2001, yet it was Clinton who targeted al Quada training camps being protected by the Taliban. This was even after the Taliban blew up those Buddhist statues.

Smartmatic was a little-known firm with no experience in voting technology before it was chosen by the Venezuelan authorities to replace the country's elections machinery ahead of a contentious referendum that confirmed Mr. Chávez as president in August 2004.

Seven months before that voting contract was awarded, a Venezuelan government financing agency invested more than $200,000 into a smaller technology company, owned by some of the same people as Smartmatic, that joined with Smartmatic as a minor partner in the bid.

In return, the government agency was given a 28 percent stake in the smaller company and a seat on its board, which was occupied by a senior government official who had previously advised Mr. Chávez on elections technology. But Venezuelan officials later insisted that the money was merely a small-business loan and that it was repaid before the referendum.

With a windfall of some $120 million from its first three contracts with Venezuela, Smartmatic then bought the much larger and more established Sequoia Voting Systems, which now has voting equipment installed in 17 states and the District of Columbia.

The idea apparently being proposed is that you get to permanently keep a small number of the tracks you download. The claim in the Ars article that you will be able to play *everything* you download indefinitely is ridiculous. There is no way that makes sense for the labels -- it amounts to selling out their entire back-catalog business for a one-time fee.

Now, no one with a real insight into the situation has actually made reference to anything different then a connection to terrorism or terrorist. We have listened to people claiming to protect civil liberties demand that terrorist and people who took up arms against our troops get a trial in US courts where the argument against that claimed it would expose intelligence gained from them and cause those gains to be ineffective in the future. Yet, the Civil liberties side claims that someone being held for fighting and killing our troops or conducting attacks against civilians is inherently privileged to our constitutional protections as if they were elevated above the slime they are. And when you finally get right down to it, you find all these people making personal insults to the president of the United State and other leaders who have backed these policies.

But the problem with that is that it is not true. In other words not everyone the government designates as an enemy combatant ever took up arms against our country. I fact there are several good examples of this, which is why there is supposed to be this thing called a trial that determines if you really did something. As for the "national security" argument, it is routinely and demonstrably abused. ONe o fthe funniest examples is the infamous "parrot report". They spent decades trying to keep that out. The FBI has an amazing propensity to declare that some or all of the evidence against someone cannot be submitted because it is classified (for national security reasons). In other words, there is a reason people don't feel comfortable trusting the government with this sort of thing.

Incidentally, the only people I'm aware of who even fit the description of bearing arms against our country and attacking our soldiers who are also in GitMo are the soldiers who defended their country when we invaded it. To my mind this makes them *by definition* POWs.

What we really have is the alarm side ruining it's credibility with individual citizens thinking that the positions of the civil liberty alarmists are insane. They are actually making the case for people to not believe them or to think they are somehow too extreme to be right.

It does not matter. People of that persuasion would not believe the government was spying on them if they found FBI agents in their house. It's like all news of that kind is surrounded by a "Someone Else's Problem Field." They don't even believe the spying that the government admits publicly and the news drones on about for days, much less the stuff that was reported longer than 5 minutes ago. There's a switch that goes off in some people that says "if he talks bad about the government, especially if it's about surveillance, he is a looney conspiracy theorist nutjob." This efficiently prevents them from learning anything about it. Meanwhile the real conspiracy theorist nutjobs usually find out about the extent of government spying, but they tend to go further in their theories or have odd ideas about the motivations behind them.

For Scientists, a Beer Test Shows Results as a Litmus Test

Ever since there have been scientists, there have been those who are wildly successful, publishing one well-received paper after another, and those who are not. And since nearly the same time, there have been scholars arguing over what makes the difference.

What is it that turns one scientist into more of a Darwin and another into more of a dud?

After years of argument over the roles of factors like genius, sex and dumb luck, a new study shows that something entirely unexpected and considerably sudsier may be at play in determining the success or failure of scientists -- beer.

According to the study, published in February in Oikos, a highly respected scientific journal, the more beer a scientist drinks, the less likely the scientist is to publish a paper or to have a paper cited by another researcher, a measure of a paper's quality and importance.

The results were not, however, a matter of a few scientists having had too many brews to be able to stumble back to the lab. Publication did not simply drop off among the heaviest drinkers. Instead, scientific performance steadily declined with increasing beer consumption across the board, from scientists who primly sip at two or three beers over a year to the sort who average knocking back more than two a day.

"I was really surprised," said Dr. Tomas Grim, the author of the study and an ornithologist at Palacky University in the Czech Republic, who normally studies the behavior of birds, not scientists. "And I am happy to see that the relationship I found seems to be very well supported by my new observations in pubs, bars and restaurants."

Dr. Grim, carried out the research by surveying his fellow Czech ornithologists about their beer drinking habits first in 2002 and then in 2006. He obtained the same results each time.

The paper has quickly been making the rounds among biologists, provoking reactions like surprise, nervous titters and irritation -- often accompanied by the name of a scientist whose drinking is as impressive as his or her list of publications.

Matthew Symonds, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Melbourne who has also studied factors affecting scientific productivity, called the results remarkable.

"It's rather devastating to be told we should drink less beer in order to increase our scientific performance," Dr. Symonds said.

Though the public may tend to think of scientists as exceedingly sober, scientific schmoozing is often beer-tinged, famous for producing spectacular breakthroughs and productive collaborations, countless papers having begun as scrawls on cocktail napkins.

Yet the new study shows no indication that some level of moderate social beer drinking increases scientific productivity. Some scientists suggest that biologists in the Czech Republic could prove to be an anomaly, given that the country has a special relationship to beer, boasting the highest rate of beer consumption on earth.

More important, as Dr. Grim pointed out, the study documents a correlation between beer drinking and scientific performance without explaining any correlation. That leaves open the possibility that it is not beer drinking that causes poor scientific performance, but just the opposite.

Or, as Dr. Mike Webster, an ornithologist and a beer enthusiast at Washington State University in Pullman, said, maybe "those with poor publication records are drowning their sorrows."

In spite of his study, Dr. Grim, who said he would on occasion enjoy more than 12 beers in a night, is not on a campaign to decrease beer drinking among scientists. Why not? His answer: "I like it."

I'm not sure that you fully understand just how TiVo interacts with digital cable in these modern times, at least in the US.

It's not just ISPs and sites who can be faulted for co-operating with foreign censors. Much of the censorware used by such governments is developed in America. A great step would be to introduce legislation to expose which companies are selling censorware to foreign governments. This a tool of oppression, and exports should be scrutinized like weapons.

Such immunity would mean a "get out of jail free" card for companies that helped Bush illegally spy on the calls and emails of innocent Americans--halting lawsuits currently being heard in court.

These lawsuits may be the only way Americans ever find out how far Bush went in breaking the law. Instead of caving in, House Democrats pushed back hard. Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared, "The president is wrong, and he knows it." And on Friday, House Democrats passed the security bill without immunity for lawbreakers and with new checks and balances on the Bush administration!

MoveOn members and other progressives helped make this victory happen. Tens of thousands of phone calls and emails--and hundreds of thousands of petition signatures--demanded that Democrats stand on principle. Over the course of several months, we kept the pressure on.

The fight's not over. All eyes now turn to the Senate. But when progressives win important fights--and when Democratic elected leaders show backbone after an outpouring of public sentiment--it's important to take a step back and celebrate. Together, our activism made a big difference!

apparently this guy took some photos of some cannonballs in the crimean war that became famous as a poetic commentary on war. this documentary filmmaker, errol morris, has gone completely unhinged obsessive compulsive over whether or not the photos are fake and/ or manipulated. it's utterly fascinating, and a little weird, to see so much time and effort devoted to these photos. specifically, cannons and shadows. utterly esoteric and thorough. he also expands into the larger topic of the history of manipulated politically sensitive photos. makes for a good read, especially if you are interested in pre-photoshop image manipulation

Hm I suppose you MAY have missed the article that came out (from the Wall Street Journal no less) that talked about a huge NSA spying program, which includes -everyone- in the city of Detroit, everyone they talked to, among millions of other people whose emails, etc got flagged by some NSA program. I'd link but their site requires subscription. The NSA pulled bank, phone, credit card, etc records for millions of innocent individuals and shared them with many other government agencies.

This type of government-funded, classified-budget project, plus all the other recent revelations about warrant-less wiretapping (demanded by the Bush administration officials on account of their terrorist-finding programs) amounts to a huge case against the Bush administration itself. If the administration had not demanded the info, which is illegal itself thanks to the Constitution, the ISPs would not have had to give up info... not that they had to, and doing so was also illegal IMHO. Anyways you can't possibly say it was only the ISP's fault without acknowledging the government was giving them hell in the meantime.

Maybe this is a little bit off topic, but I for one am quite grateful to live in a society where air safety is so well looked after and monitored. We really don't skimp (in general) on air safety, and take quite a rational view about how checking and maintaining planes, and training pilots actually contributes to preventing accidents.

This is far from the common attitude in some other places around the world. In some other countries, operating an "airline" is still a very seat-of-the-pants operation -- passengers are unrecorded, cargo is misloaded, pilots are bribed to take things they don't know about, etc. And if a plane were to crash, people would throw up their hands and say, "what can be done, these things just happen", or "it's God's will that accidents occur", or "why talk about it?". But here, we've been accustomed to understanding that there were tangible causes behind every accident, and if we could only see the moments before the crash (since often no one survives to tell us what happened), we might be able to prevent future accidents. This is an admirable thing that I am very grateful for.
