In the early 1980's, the US produced intermittently buggy chips which we sold to the USSR in full knowledge that they'd disrupt production facilities. It worked very well. Why, then, wouldn't China do the same thing?

As someone who works in chip verification, I can tell you it's very difficult with most chips to do this, as long as the chips are designed in the US -- which is still largely the case, that they're designed here and produced in fabs in China (because labor's cheap and they don't care if their workers are exposed to HF and silane as long as money's coming in.)
You know *exactly* what size your chip die is. If the silicon comes back from the fab with a different-sized die, it will be very obvious. So nobody can put extra stuff onto an existing die. Die size is the single most critical aspect of most designs, because of the cost, so existing designs are jammed just as tightly as they can possibly be. You can't put more functionality into an existing die size. The problem, then, is letting your design out. (And even then, a competent chip designer could probably spot strange material on a smaller die because they're familiar with how the layout is supposed to look.)
There are some amazing military-grade chips out there. I was reading about the Maxim DS3600 the other day -- on-chip encryption and tamper-sensing, including detecting temperature changes and reacting by blanking all the on-board memory and stored encryption keys in nanoseconds, far faster than dumping liquid helium onto the chip would be able to freeze the memory for decoding. (They use some whack process for continually load-levelling and rewriting the keys so you can't use stored oxide charge to read what was there before it got blanked, either.) That kind of stuff is on the common market, available for anyone to buy. I assume the military has better stuff yet, and espionage people even better.
At the end of the day you have to be able to trust someone or you'll just crouch in your basement. But there are ways to verify a chip's functionality and look for clearly bogus interactions. Our chip test systems make it easy to distinguish chips from different silicon lots, much less from different fabs. As always, if you buy the cheap stuff you don't know what you're getting, but if you spend the money to do some research, you'll have a much, much better idea of what you're getting. In this case, money in the millions of dollars, granted, but if you're designing military-grade stuff, well, that's why you buy from companies with a track record of producing trustworthy stuff.

Sounds like the (sadly) unchecked and unconvicted monopoly that I've known Cablevision to be. At best they seem scary, and at worst, evil.

I haven't heard much regarding Optimum's content-blocking practices (this sounds troubling and accurate--my DSL's never noticeably blocked or slowed any torrents/downloads; it does go down in rare cases for very short times though), but their misleading "grassroots" advertising during the West Side Stadium battle (in which they were clearly defending their own stadium interests in a very shady way--we can argue the actual usefulness of a WSS a later time) and things like this blog post are enough to make me abhor CVC's existence. They own the New York Knicks basketball team and I have a sinking feeling that they suck because CVC make enough money to consider them a non-issue.

In short, I hate them more than I could ever begin to be annoyed at, say, Microsoft. (MS has tried hard to be a powerful company, but their influence is increasingly waning. Comcast et al. seem to have awful service, but they don't seem to want to mess with entire city-building contracts that I know of--their influence seems to be mainly on their own internet service, for which I do hope they pay dearly. OTOH, Cablevision wants to get involved in too many things in their otherwise limited NE US service area.)

I haven't thrown away my parents' cable box yet and switched them (and myself) to FiOS, but mainly because I've never needed more speed than DSL gives anyway. I won't let their Triple Play (or anyone else's) in, though--I don't want Optimum Online, and bundles just help breed the anti-competitive practices that both cable and phone companies love.

People might like to read the story of a man who sold bagels using the honor system. The mainframe, the aged yet surprisingly resilient survivor of computing, is getting a face-lift. A model called the I.B.M. z10, which is being introduced Tuesday, is far faster and has three times the data-juggling memory of its three-year-old predecessor, the z9.

But the significance of the new machine, analysts say, is that it is a big step in a broad campaign by I.B.M. to make the mainframe computer a high-performance, energy-efficient engine for running all kinds of nonmainframe software.

The goal, according to I.B.M. executives and analysts, is to recast the mainframe as a nimble supercomputer in corporate and government data centers, running Web-based programs, Linux, advanced data mining and business intelligence software.

To do that, I.B.M. has refined its mainframe hardware and come up with new software tools, as part of a five-year, $1.5-billion overhaul.

The mainframes ability to survive is only as good as its ability to innovate and compete for these new computing workloads of the future, an analyst at Forrester Research, Brad Day, said. And I.B.M. is starting to succeed at that.

The stakes are high. Though the sales of mainframes account for less than 4 percent of I.B.M.s revenue, the sales of mainframe software, storage and services are a big, profitable business. The overall business dependent on mainframes represents about 25 percent of company revenue and nearly half of its profit, said A. M. Sacconaghi, an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein & Company.

At Hannaford Brothers in Scarborough, Me., a supermarket chain with stores in five states, the company has consolidated many programs onto its two mainframes. They include its consumer Web site, its Web portal for tracking shipments from suppliers and store and customer data that were once housed on computers in individual stores. The mainframe has become very flexible and very scalable for us, said Bill Homa, Hannafords chief information officer.

Robert Woeckener, a senior technology manager at Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, Ohio, said his company had consolidated more than 1,300 programs onto 480 virtual computers software that emulates a machine that run on two mainframes.

Nationwide began the program more than two years ago, projecting savings in energy, administration and other costs at $15 million over three years. Were probably running ahead of that, Mr. Woeckener said.

I.B.M. competitors say that some individual success stories among mainframe users do not change the reality that the mainframe is in retreat.

In 2004, Microsoft founded the Mainframe Migration Alliance, a group of technology companies that helps corporations move software applications from mainframes to smaller computers powered by low-cost microprocessors and typically running Microsofts Windows server operating system. Microsoft tracked 85 mainframe migration projects last year, and the company says 55 more are under way.

Yes, this is what I had suggested before: "nuclear-powered octane". Run a nuclear plant to get the energy to make octane, using the CO2 in the atmosphere. And yep, a federal lab is a few steps ahead of all of us on this one. Journalism.org has done numerous studies since then showing Ron has recived 0% or <0.5% of media coverage.
• In August 2007, ABC manipulates preception of numbers of Ron Paul street supporters as compared to Romney suppoters outside the GOP debate (a debate which he was almost excluded from until public outcry)
• In August 2007, Ron received 9.1% of the vote in the Iowa Ames staw poll, yet FOX broadcast the results excluding Ron and listing candidates who scored LESS. Thankfully, the New York Times got it right ... at least on the internet, where you're at least likely to find SOME poisitive (albiet buried) positive coverage. Such as the "internet only" interviews with Ron that ABC published as opposed to on broadcast television alongside their other candidate interviews
• In December 2007, MSNBC regularly listed the candidates and excluded Ron Paul. This trend continues amongst all media outlets to this day.
• In January 2008, Ron was excluded from the FOX Forum before the New Hampshire primary because "there was not enough room at the table" despite the fact that Ron had garnered THREE TIMES as many votes as Guiliani in Iowa and later went on to score more than NINE TIMES the number of votes of Fred in New Hampshire -- both of which were invited.
• Before Super Tuesday, there was literally no coverage of Ron Paul and when he did win 2nd place in Montana it was largely ignored (just like his 2nd place wins in Nevada and Louisiana)
