Needs no installation, just download and save it somewhere, then run it. Make a shortcut for your desktop or start menu if you want.

Re:Poor Quality By Design
I would love to get a Enterprise edition as it doesn't contain all that telemetry bloatware. In fact, Enterprise is truly a successor to Windows 7 Pro.
For those that are using Windows 10 Home and Pro, check out O&O ShutUp10. The real irony is that O&O is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner LOL =)

Re:Stardock Start10
The only quibble I have is with the Windows Telemetry crap which is difficult to turn-off/thwart. It's do-able though.
There are several options, e.g. O&O's ShutUp10 (awful non-intuitive interface alert) or Spybot's Anti-Beacon which also works for Win7 and 8/8.1.

Re:Just turn off Windows Updates via Services
I tend to manually turn off a lot of that stuff, in so far as possible. Turn off Cortana, don't use the Windows Store (never seem to need it), don't use Edge (prefer Chrome), etc. At work, though, we recommend a program called O&O ShutUp10 for folks who want to automate a portion of that. I'm not sure how well it handled updates, though.

Re:How do I block this stuff?
turn off some of the crap with this..
https://www.oo-software.com/en...maybe even disable updates completely and use this...
http://download.wsusoffline.ne...
to download updates and an update installer separately.and of course... disable all the "live tiles" or delete/unisntall their respective apps, and use this for a start menu...
http://classicshell.net/if you need a pop/imap mail client, consider mozilla thunderbird or even seamonkey instead of the piece-of-shit mail "app" in win10. note that the popular mail client in "live essentials" is end-of-life and no longer updated/fixed.

Re:How do I block this stuff?
Personally, I just use OOSU10 ( https://www.oo-software.com/en... ). I don't use OneDrive, never have, so I just simply disabled it completely in OOSU10 and sure enough, it hasn't reared its head anywhere since then.

Use Shut Up Windows 10
If you're on Win 10 and you care, use Shut Up Windows 10 ( https://www.oo-software.com/en... ).
You'll have less telemetry than Windows 7 or 8, MacOS, and probably Ubuntu (I forget, are they spying this month or not?).

Re:Does the submitter even read Slashdot?
I cannot compromise on these things. I will not use Windows 10.
If you are using Windows 7 or 8 you should know that the bulk of Microsoft's telemetry has been backported. Unless you've prevented Windows Update installing this stuff then avoiding Windows 10 isn't protecting you.
On the other hand there are actively developed tools to control at least those parts of Microsoft's telemetry that can be controlled.

Re:You have to know how to secure a Windows 10 PC
Find and change the default privacy/security setting and use a firewall to block all the outbound "telemetry" and you'll be fine.
In terms of performance, Microsoft definitely made improvements "under the hood". However, there are still a lot of things to dislike. The UI is horrendously ugly, lots of changes just for the sake of making things different and Windows 10 is still very buggy.
OOSU10 ( https://www.oo-software.com/en... ) allows you to disable telemetry and all such stuff just by simply clicking on the corresponding entry, much easier than fiddling with firewalls or such.

That, plus telemetry blocking at the firewall level have placated my concerns, personally.

Re:Third-party programs
I've personally been using O&O ShutUp10 since Windows 10 release. Seems to do the job, though like most of these 3rd party programs, the source code is not available nor the binary verifiable, and this particular program needs to be run as Admin to change many settings.

Re:ARGH
The first thing to install after installing Windows 10 is this very useful tool: Shut Up 10
which will turn off most (if not all) of the spying within Windows 10. The utility gets fairly regular updates, too.Made by a well respected German company (who are a Microsoft Gold Partner no less - no figure).

Re: Oh, they're a big company,
Or use ShutUp10, which is free and requires no installation. After that, install Spybot Anti-Beacon.
Funny how even the anti-malware companies are calling Windows 10 spyware.

Re:How do I avoid being infected on 8.1?
If only there was some website, where MY problems with DIGITAL devices were listed and fixed. If only someone with no LIFE would put out the INFO needed.
If only the boldcase words above could be put together to form a magic URL, where all of the problems with Microsoft software could be solved. That'll be a great day if someone does it. Then there will a a script there.
1st rule: Do not talk about the fight club.
If you've already installed Windows 10, it seems there's a way to get it to stop broadcasting telemetry (even when disabled), produced by those good folks at O&O Software GmbH called Shut Up Windows 10 [no ref links here]. Perhaps they can make it work with Windows 7 & 8 as well? O&O is not a new game in town, they also make a nice Defrag tool as well. They've been around since at least 2000, when I first heard of them on IRC.

Re:But OTOHI think people place too much faith in the ability of Linux filesystems to "avoid fragmentation".
They do a good job if you don't fill the disks to the brim. My ext3 disk only goes above 1% fragmentation when it is nearly full. When that happens, there is this defragger.

Re:Difference between Linux and Windows
Theoretically, running as a non-privileged user on an NT-based system would prevent damage to system files or the registry. It would also prevent raw socket access which is only available to the administrator account. But most developers don't take the security into account and most people don't run 2000/XP as non-admin. O&O software is the first software maker I've seen that takes non-admin user accounts into consideration. They actually ask during setup who you want to have access to the program and its settings.

Re:Windows-like version numbers
Try O&O Defrag. I couldn't live without it.
