OpenBSD's spamd actually tarpits the spammer down, then after a looooong held connection sends a 450 (by default) to the spammer to have the spammer-machine retry. I have it running with various autoupdated blackhole lists and very little spam sees my server anymore.

Why not use OpenBSD? The excellent stateful packet filter have builtin bandwidth management, and the operating system is known for it's focus on security.

OpenBSD is a better firewall (pf is very nice), but NetBSD is a bit more portable (in the unlikely event that OpenBSD won't run on it). I think the platform you are looking for is called mac68k or m68k.

In fact, just last year ftp.openbsd.org did get compromised!

Okay, I read the article and it said that at least one machine was at a remote location that couldn't be accessed - can anyone tell me what kind of physical setup debian project uses? I always get the impression that they're based out of some dude's dorm or basement, like in this OpenBSD image. Do they have any physical security measures at all around their boxes?

For example, Python has evolved into an extremely intuitive yet powerful programming language.
Perl was also fairly new in its time.
There's GNU Emacs which is one of the most powerful text editors in existence.
There's the Apache Webserver. Although webservers aren't new, I would hardly call Apache a copy of anything.
I'm not sure whether the first publicly-released blog software was open source, but I think it might have been.
OpenBSD was, AFAIK, the first secure-by-default modern Unix system.
Linux (the kernel) has also done (or been modified to do) several things not done before.

BSD kernels are unencumbered by System V legacy code, copyright and control - which is basically why Apple's OS X isn't a licensee of SCO's UNIX copyright.

I love the fact that when mentioning free UNIX only Linux gets a mention. This is despite the fact that a huge swathe of ISPs run some sort of *BSD for hosting, security, firewalls, etc.

Not only are they free in both senses of the word but there is no viral GNU license which obliges derivative works from adhering to the license.

If GNU is challenge and Linux destroyed then it will only delay the pervasiveness of "free" Unicies - IBM et al will simply adopt a BSD kernel. BSD kernels were created for the specific tasks of removing the old AT&T/System V licensed code!

This is the sort of flaming that gives the Coward family a bad name. Read the frequently asked questions for OpenBSD. This is isue 8.18. In any case, why would this issue cause you to swear about the OS? Try it and see what you think. I found it to be very stable. I didn't use it in a situation that would tax its scalaiblity. The world is full of servers that are used at 10% of capacity, but are hit by viruses and other attacks. For these servers, OpenBSD would be great. Besides, there is pretty good cross fertilizaton between the BSDs. If the others can move from O(n) to O(1), I'll bet the OpenBSD folks can do it too. It just may take them a while to do a full security audit of the code.

They do run OpenBSD on the servers they pay for bandwidth on. They just don't have the option of choosing the OS on the servers that they don't have direct control over (such as the www and ftp at U Alberta).

some aspects of Windows that are copies of some unix idea get greatly mutated

And sometimes they are not even mutated that much. Open C:\Windows\System32\ftp.exe in Notepad and search for 'copyright'. You will find Universty of California, not Microsoft. It looks like somebody has been using BSD code & I don't recall that fact being mentioned in my EULA for Windows (C:\Windows\System32\eula.txt). After looking at the BSD license, I'm wondering if the second condition was violated.

OpenBSD runs Apache on Solaris? I'm sure thats because a uni hosts it.

Although none of the developers think it is particularly relevant, this question comes up frequently enough in the mailing lists that it is answered here. www.openbsd.org and the main OpenBSD ftp site are hosted at a SunSITE at the University of Alberta, Canada. These sites are hosted on a large Sun system, which has access to lots of storage space and Internet bandwidth. The presence of the SunSITE gives the OpenBSD group access to this bandwidth. This is why the main site runs here. Many of the OpenBSD mirror sites run OpenBSD, but since they do not have guaranteed access to this large amount of bandwidth, the group has chosen to run the main site at the University of Alberta SunSITE.

Find yourself any old POS machine (486 or better please) a little bit of RAM, a gig or two for a hard drive (The bigger the more stuff you can log) a 3.5" floppy drive and a pair of NIC's D-link or Intel are the one's I like, Intel are best but D-link are nice and cheap. Then hit ftp.openbsd.org and get the single floppy installer. You might need some help the first time through setting it all up but an OpenBSD firewall running NAT and DNSSpoof to redirect all the crap websites (and gator) to 127.0.0.1 is the best way to go.
