That makes 230 PB of uncompressed storage.

But there's a more recent TS1170 with 40 TB raw capacity. So we could be looking at a raw 0.92 EB.

But that's assuming the new drive fits into the old frame, and I haven't sacrificed any recently warm chickens to the product matrix oracle on this quick scrape, so who's to say?

Do you agree or disagree with Eric Raymond and Tim O'Reilly about the need to seperate moral considerations like end user freedom, privacy and democracy from the question of having "open" access to source?

That is something really worth championing, but it's also a dragon den of proprietary technology. The FPGA vendors are cut-throat competitive about this stuff. The tool-sets to program FPGAs are always behind restrictive walls. I have a tool-chain I downloaded and a Mojo board to go with the new O'Reilly Learning FPGAbook I bought, but so far I've been standoffish about getting into it, because it's one of those 'keyed software' things.

I have never been keen to install software on my machine that requires me to 'phone home' to unlock it. What if I grow dependent on it and they decide I haven't kissed the proper ring?

When the work is something like sales or marketing, long hours may be effective, since you can reach more clients or brainstorm ideas. The work isn't necessarily mentally exhausting. I can see how a VC would want long hours because getting to market first is a great way to edge out competition. But for engineering work, where correctness or deep comprehension of a problem is key, long hours will slow you down. I've seen it happen. A team will pull an all nighter, desperately rushing to solve a difficult problem or a mysterious bug only to still be stuck with it in the morning. Programming is in the realm of the mind and a good solution is rarely large quantities of code. If you need to write verbose and lengthy functions, you might be doing it wrong. Sure, you can type faster or copy and paste, but you will miss something that will take you hours to find. I find that I can solve difficult problems by relaxing and keeping the idea in my mind. However, the exceptions given are valid. If you fully understand the problem and know exactly what you want (and it's your personal project) stay in the groove while it lasts.

Larry Wall made Java Perl Lingo (JPL, named after Larry's previous employer) around the release of Perl 5. O'Reilly first tried to sell it as a commercial software in the Perl Resource Kit, but eventually made it open source http://www.oreilly.com/pub/pr/... in a "dumpware" sort of mode. It eventually became incompatible with newer Perl and Java releases and I want to say it was abandoned, but that is pretending people used it.

In the case of R, there's a sub-universe of it's own using the Hadley Wickham (and his cohorts) packages tidyr and so on. If you buy into the hadleyverse (he prefers the name tidyverse).

I'm particularly interested in the new packages for reading data readr and readxl, which are supposed to be much faster with saner defaults. The old read packages had a habit of treating all strings as though they're a database enumerated type, it would try to "tokenize" everything on the fly...

I think what you're talking about with R is a symptom of any long established language-- there's bound to be lots of oddities, cruft, workaround for misfeatures, and a bewildering array of competing libraries to do things in slightly different ways.

Personally, I wouldn't complain about R favoring vectors ops (it's better then struggling along implementing your own the way you need to in most languages). There's plenty of oddities: first of all, the "." is not a method call, though it's used everywhere in names (just like "_"): R does however *have* method calls, they're implemented with an arrow, just like perl5 ("->"). The type system is a little strange, where if you've got an aggregate of items all of the same type, the aggregate is regarded as being of the same type...

I don't have a particular opinion, other than the common concerns about its performance and resource utilization. But I tend to code at the traces anyway.

These should be required reading for programmers AND designers. I'm looking at you Mr. shitty designer/programmer that only lets me put 13 characters in for my (first) name.

Unexpected encounters with dirty code will make it very difficult to make a sane prediction.

Dirty code is defined as ' overly complex or highly coupled.' As a programer you are expected to deliver X number of features by Y date. Unless one of those features is 'simple and loosely coupled code' what does that have to do with predicting anything? For performance you don't predict. Experiments are the only thing you have that work: test and change and re-test and un-change and re-test, endlessly. Anything else is voodoo programming, not to insult the pracitioners of Santaria, Vodou or Hoodoo.

How about predicting the schedule? I recall that Steve McConnell once joked that to get better at estimating we need to get better at estimating. (This may have been someone else.) Greg Wilson showed we can do this in programming, and Computer Science in general. We only have to do scientific experimentation with various methods. We throw away what doesn't work (instead of writing pulpy business books to bilk people out of money.) But you'll still have to run a lot of tests to do that, too.

It is not uncommon to see "quick" refactorings eventually taking several months to complete. In these instances, the damage to the credibility and political capital of the responsible team will range from severe to terminal. If only we had a tool to help us identify and measure this risk.

It is my opinion that any refactoring that cannot be done by an automatic program isn't refactoring. The original definition of refactoring is just 'factoring' or re-organizing the code. It is not a re-writing as in an 'several months' effort.

Misuse of a sexy, trendy name from the 90s does not change this. All re-writing suffers the risk of second-system syndrome and not in the throw-one-away sense of prototyping. Do you have a button to press in your IDE to make the change? Do you have in mind a short sed statement, simple awk program, EMACS macros or a on-hand shell scriptlet to do the transformation? If not then you cannot get away from re-thinking the problem. This will require re-design of the solution and re-implementation of the feature. Each of these carries time risk at least as high as the original work.

What if the problem is overly complex or highly coupled? The code may merely be an expression of this. In this case only a paradigm or perspective change by the customer, developer or user can untangle the problem. The computer cannot help you do anything but automate making a mess if the problem is a mess. Changing perspective is often an unbound-in-time problem for human beings. Good luck with estimating completion dates for that.

In fact, we have many ways of measuring and controlling the degree and depth of coupling and complexity of our code. Software metrics can be used to count the occurrences of specific features in our code. The values of these counts do correlate with code quality.

In fact, Greg Wilson showed in his presentation that almost every metric on the market when analyzed showed no better and usually equal predictive power as simple counts of Lines of Code.

The situation in programming is almost as if more code equals more bugs while less code equals less bugs.

Didn't take me long to start disagreeing with them. This one.

I'm sorry, but a program that's thousands of methods and small classes is not clearer than a program with fewer, larger, structures. Yes, write code for Humans, not machines, I agree. BUT remember your other programmers want to understand your program - not any one individual method - so making each method simple only moves the complexity into the interrelationships between methods, something considerably harder to understand.

(The real failures when other people edit my code usually come in not understanding how classes inter-relate and the layers of the program - the architecture if you will. And at the moment, the only real way of communicating this? Comments describing the architecture.)

And, do comment your code - not 'as little as possible', but not 'what's obvious from the code'. Remember what's obvious to you might not be obvious to someone else -- write code for humans, not machines. I'm really REALLY not sure that creating another class to hold four parameters for one method is any clearer than just those parameters - especially since I work in languages that support named parameters anyway (a much neater solution)).

The dead giveaway that this person is full of it is their lack of justification - explain to me WHY the "rule" exists..

On October 4th, 2001, I read this post https://tech.slashdot.org/stor... on slashdot. The article it refers to, http://archive.oreilly.com/pub... describes "SMS Relay -- An Idea for Fault-Tolerant Communications", wherein the author proposes building a mesh-like network capability into the SMS programming of cellphones. It's still a good idea.
And that article got me thinking about what I could do to make a difference. I shortly got my first ham radio license, volunteered with ARES, then the Red Cross, and now work there.
