The Fleury Method(tm)
1) Astroturf wildly to market your product, on the assumption that your customers and fellow developers are idiots
2) Issue a mealymouthed pseudo-apology, when you get caught
3) Wait a year, then publicly call your fellow OSS developers "hippies" and "Hari Krishnas"
4) ??
5) Profit!!!

Re:How can such a mistake be made?
But this actually happens in Gnome applications. Dialog buttons are the wrong way around.

Re:Firefox tm policy and Debian tm policy v. simil
This has been debated in debian, and the resolution was to not distribute debian with the original trademark, just the swirl (the other one is with the bottle). See screenshots at: http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?r
e lease=361&slide=41&title=debian+gnu/linux+3.1+scre enshots The're not making up rules for others they don't abide themselves, MoFo has repeatedly been asked to provide for such an alternative but denied it (for obvious reasons) -

It's still at v2.4.27 for OSDir... : here

OSDir want translators for their site
It says so here. Looks like they have a lot of translations already. Cool.

Re: Throughly undemocratic
In Demark there was a binding order from Parliament. But the responsible minister ignored it and they created a superficial and incredible theater piece. It had no consequences for the Minister responsible. Denmark is strange. In rotten Denmark the "Road to Europe" had no political consequences for Rasmussen, he did not step down. Similarly the representative was rescued by the social democrats. In other European states he would regarded as a criminal. Democracy in Denmark is soft, it is still a monarchy.

Re:This Doesn't Change Much
Are you sure Ubuntu's installer is based on the new Debian installer?
I'm sure Ubuntu's developers changed it a bit, but it also looks like they borrowed a lot from the new installer. Look at the screenshots found here (for Ubuntu) and here (for Debian-Installer pre-rc2).
I can't find screenshots for rc3, but quickly glancing at the ones I linked for rc2, not too much has changed. -

Hmmm....
The philosophy is interesting. It's also the first instance of something that sounds cheesey but I'd love to tack on to XP when I tortured with that: The Eye Candy Meter
But, the question is what's it for? The key thing seems to be a great sense of integration, etc. But, as far as I can tell, most of the things that someone who wants a *nix with a gui are not there. I may have missed some included alternatives, but you'll do without:
- abiword/openoffice/gnumeric/koffice
- firefox/mozilla (it does seem to have Konqueror)
- mplayer
- apache/php/postgresql/mysql
- quanta
- gimp
- emacs
Ouch! I suspect you won't be using this to do office, web or database work for now. Complete package list/release notes here

OpenOffice 2.0?This screenshot shows what appears to be a "ximianized" version of OpenOffice 2.0. The Ximian page doesn't seem to indicate this has happened.
Does anyone know where to get binaries of this little gem? A few higher-quality icons REALLY goes a long way...

Ubuntu rocks
New stuff include
- Gnome 2.10.1, which makes the desktop a lot faster than before
- X.org
- Simplified update- and package management
- Much faster boot process
- Better laptop support (ie suspending, hibernating, processor frequency scaling)
- Kickstart support for automated largescale installations
- Live CD and Install CD both use the new debian installer infrastructure
- UTF-8 by default
- A program for collecting information about what hardware works and what doesn't
- Kubuntu - complete KDE 3.4 based version of Ubuntu
Stuff people are going to bitch about
- No graphical installer. The current installer is extremely simple and has been streamlined even further in this release. A graphical installer is planned for the next version (Breezy Badger).
- No menu editor installed. One can always edit the files by hand, or install kmenu or something similar for gnome. The official gnome menu editor just didn't finish in time.
- No DivX or MP3 support. These are simple to add though and anyone coming from debian will probably already know of the Marillat repositories. Just look at the instructions in the wiki or use Hoary After-Install helper or another script to do the dirty work for you.
OSDir has published a lot of screenshots of Ubuntu.
Oh and if you are interested to know if your laptop or other piece of hardware is supported, some info can be found in the wiki on the Hardware support-page

i've never seen 'luna' you refer to, but plastik is available in kde 3.3.2, too. actually, it's funny - a couple of weeks ago my brother set plastik on his computer. i saw that, thought "ohh, nice, i'll use this one from now on". now i see that kde has defaulted to my choice. nnnnice :) -

Re:The same issues that have been for years.
Fair warning, I do work for Xandros.
1-> There are always printers that dont work, but our printer configuration wizard is very good and easy to use. See screenshot at osdir.com
2-> Partitioning : Again, see Screenshots at osdir.com
3-> Mice usually work without issue, when they dont its usually caused by the USB hardware not being detected properly, or requiring a different ACPI setting to be enabled.
4-> We dont resize x on the fly, but we do test the settings you've selected & ask you to confirm them before they are written.
5-> Our login manager only allows kde logins, this can be changed by installing gdm, kdm or xdm from the debian mirror.
6-> With Xandros Networks applications are easy to remove, again more screenshots :D
7-> Not sure what you mean regarding the device applet.
8-> Best tool for the job is our motto. you wont find needlessly duplicated applications.
9-> FileManager More Screenshots

Default CDE desktop
What the heck - are they kidding? The default desktop background looks like on of those 3D images, which is to say it looks like ass. Maybe there's a subliminal message, I don't know, but I certainly wouldn't want that as my desktop background. Of course, the fact that CDE is running on top of it doesn't help. Sorry if I seem harsh, I'm still not sure if it's a joke. OTOH maybe I'm the only one who doesn't like it...
