Who installed Kazza Media Desktop???
Seriously only internet newbies, grandmas & grandpas installed the Kazza Media Desktop. All other installed Kazza Lite (No Adware!) or eDonkey.
Later all eDonkey users switched to Overnet and later on to eMule and BitTorrent
An open source P2P application is more safe in use than a closed source application because clever people can read and understand the code.
Oh I forgot:
1) Idea
2-6) see above
7) ???
8) No Profit
9) Sued by RIAA/MPAA... -
Re:Torrent?
Overnet already does something kind of like this.

Re:Mac + Windows = Success
Nice post, but a little out of date, as I see no mention of Poisoned which is a front end to giFT. giFT supports FastTrack (Kazaa), Gnutella, and OpenFT (a hot little network). Personally I'd rather run Poisoned than Kazaa any day.
Furthermore, the BitTorrent community is alive and well on OS X. Azureus works really well, and there's a hot little native client that is better than the standard one.
I've been using the Overnet command line client, which sucks but gets the job done better than the various front-ends floating around.
And then there's Hotline, Carracho, and the new open-source client-server model "Wired".
Enjoy. -
Re:Best P2P tools for Linux?
You can get Overnet for Linux. It's the best file sharing client around, and it uses the second largest network around, but so far none of us using it have been sued by the RIAA.
:-)Oh yeah -> http://www.overnet.com/

Overnet Is the Future
Overnet just keeps adding features, and no one else can keep up. The latest test version implements the HTTP protocol (and allows for any protocol to be plugged in easily, including other P2P ones), so network administrators will probably find it difficult to firewall.
I should note that I only use it to get ISOs, but there are around a million users at any given time, so it's roughyl 1/3 of the size of Kazaa - not too bad for file sharing under the radar.

eDonkey - a much better solution
As always, I am surprised by a lack of recognition for eDonkey2000 at Slashdot. The ed2k is, I believe, technologically superior, it has better clients (and larger variety, and the leading ones are also open source). The system is also provides prolonged availablity much better.
In addition to this, ed2k is better protected from "anti-piracy" attacks. There is additional server layer, very resistant to servers being temporarily shut off and requiring (I believe) less traffic. A lot of negotiation is performed directly between clients - the Overnet model does not require servers at all. Finally, the actual links are in the form of short text links that can be e-mailed, printed and even spelled over the phone, not in the form of .bittorrent files that have to be hosted somewhere. This is also the reason why ed2k-link sites are more resistant to lawsuits.
P.S. This seems to me just one more case of an inferior technology receiving an unfair share of coverage. Like MS dominates the media, BitTorrent seems to dominate Slashdot... -
It's called Overnet
This basically already exists: http://www.overnet.com/

Re:Mirror for the movies?
I've made the 720x540 stream availableon edonkey/overnet. It's got lots of info about who did it inside it, so I figure the authors won't feel cheated on copyright. It's so tedious anyway, I doubt that it'll be wildly popular, but the fact that it can be done at all is interesting to see.
I haven't gotten the python modules right for bittorrent on RH9 or I'd set that up, too. -
Save your Money
All slashdot readers I urge you to save your money and download visual boy advance.
Buy a gamepad for your pc (just like the snes controller) - and you can get it for $9.99 at Wal-Mart, instead of the websites advertised $19.99.
And download kazaa lite (I use overnet for everything, but you can't find GBA Roms on overnet.)
As long as you don't mind playing games on your pc screen (which i don't think any of you do) as opposed to hooking it up to your tv screen, then there's a good chunk of change you'll save.
Plus you'll be able to "preview" any gba title on your pc.
Oh, and if you like the game--BUY IT!!! Make sure you support those people who develop the kick ass games!!! -
Re:Just wondering....
No, there is NO obligation under the GPL for a distro maker to host ISOs at their expensive for the benefit of freeloaders like yourself.
Yeah, and this a good reason to use P2P software. No expences for the developers.
The best P2P system on earth: Overnet.

True P2P networks (Gnutella is the only one I can think of)
overnet? -
Re:Who is everyone?
Try Overnet. They have a Linux client, they have set and forget. They have file hashes, multiple source downloading. They have very good file indexes from which you can get your MD4 hashes (you basically paste the hash into your client, and it merrily goes and gets the file from various places).
Overnet is the new serverless eDonkey client. The eDonkey network was not scalable because it relied on centralized servers (anyone could run a server, but it was centralized all the same). Overnet has no such problems and it works fantastically.
Have fun!
Cheers,
Costyn. -
Combine with EMule and Overnet Instead
While refining the original protocol is all well and good, why not look towards intergration with other open networks now?
I've used em all, as they say, and while no one client is best for all applications I'd say the Emule development is damn close. Since it's Open Source and there are several main "production" versions from different groups plus individual modders putting out even more versions on the cutting edge of development. The best code gets quickly integrated all the way from the edge to the trunk, I've had my eye on their mod forums as well as the latest emule 27a thru 27c releases and things are really moving towards another great milestone release.
With the integration of Overnet support into EMule it now has the best of both worlds, with both public servers and client to client directories. Plus with weblink sites making it easy to find and add known good files to your queue, by batches if needed, it gives the end user the complete experiance of a mature tech.
At least Gnutella is open and may actually end up moving in this direction, I'm disappointed in hearing that the upcomming WinMX will still be closed, both their client and their network really have some good features but in the P2P world closed is death IMHO. As for me, I'll be waiting for the latest 27c EMule as modded by Sivka, my personal favorite at this time.

Re:P2p linux client Question?Overnet, the sucessor to Edonkey is my client of choice at the moment, I was using KazaaLite under a VMWare windows install but I dropped that a month or so ago and just use Overnet under Linux now.

eMule is for bastards
eMule is evil because it is seriously affecting eDonkey and Overnet performance. eDonkey is only good for private trading groups, IMO. Overnet is the ways to go, or Direct Connect rocks too if you have a shitload to share.

Yawn... MD5 Checksums
I guess that the RIAA's anti-piracy measures are getting so bad that they're circumvented well before they're implemented.
There are already networks out there that incorporate MD5 checksums in order to avoid bad files (example, example). Couple that with a simple checksum repository (example, example). Or maybe even a search engine (example), and you never have to download another bad file again. -
Overnet
Overnet released their command line client for the mac. It is great. If you do not fear the terminal, then use Overnet. Overnet is compatible with the edonkey dllinks. You can find the available files with their corresponding links at Sharereactor. Just type "dllink" in overnet and paste the link from sharereactor to download the file. There is no fancy GUI yet, but I'm sure that when this gets bigger, it will have one. I highly recomend this application, but be warned of it's lack of gui. For other file sharing information I recomend zeropaid. Although they don't have the latest mac software, and they are mainly M$ users, they can give you a general idea of the programs available for download.

P2P to the rescue?
How bout someone with the full images put them up on a Distributed P2P network like Overnet or eDonkey2000 so we can take the load off of the mirrors and help proove that P2P is usefull for something other than piracy.

Re:Gun Control
P2P networks have no legitimate uses at all that cannot be (better!) carried out with another tool.
How's that? The Internet Archive has terabytes of information that they want people to download for free. They have a big bandwidth bill so they want to use p2p networks to help scale. Is this not a legitimate use or is there a better way to do this?
This would apply to any number of uses, from Debian ISOs to public access television shows.
Even commercial enterprises could realize benefits, Transmission Films is funding development of Overnet so that they can distribute high quality DRM'd movies. 'member the Victoria's Secret webcast? Or the BMW car commercials? Not everyone can afford to pay Akamai. -
Re:those using "illegal" should understand the law
Yup, yup, yup.
I use Gnutella and Overnet to share some free 3D & Poser files I've created; I also do a lot of animations just for the heck of it that are not really something I want to include in my regular portfolio, so they get shared also.
If I wanted to do any up or downloading of anything illegal, I would surely not use a service that reports exactly who I am to anyone who wants to know, when there are fine packages like Freenet freely available (something I also share on gnutella; I had the thought once or twice that countries that block Freenet installer downloads might NOT be able to block one of the gnutella clients....just doing my part for world freedom).
There are many, many legitimate uses for P2P.
Wow. I really got Link-Happy on this one.

exceptions
I can think of two notable exceptions to the mantra that they only use being made of p2p is for pirating. Furthurnet is a p2p network which grew out of the tape trading community which takes copyright and the artists wishes very seriously.
The other example Transmission Films is distributing high quality movies protected by DRM via Overnet.
The Internet Archive has terabytes of share friendly information, they are evalutating several p2p platforms for helping to keep their bandwidth bills down. I've downloaded Redhat ISO's from edonkey, when they first come out the primary distro point and mirrors are swamped for at least a week. -
Re:Kazaa vs. eDonkey
OK, first off there is a little knack to searching on eDonkey. You first have to make sure that your firewall will accept connections through ports 4662-4663 (and forwarding to the machine running the donkey)... most of this info is on the eDonkey site.
When it is up and running, you can do a search when you are connected to a server (a good idea is to get an updated serverlist, one of the places I go to is The Donkey Network). If there aren't any of the files there, then click the 'Extend Search' button that pops up to the left of the search button... to do more searches, click the button then press and hold down the enter key for less than a second, do more short bursts to let any server search results get through.
A lot of the files will be dependant on what people are sharing, and the more blue the colour, the more people have the same file. A great place I've recently found that lists certain Sci-Fi files is Varelse's Sharepool, and another site for other links is ShareReactor.
A lot of the server work (updating lists, etc) has been automated in Overnet, but I haven't been using it at all yet. As I said in the first post, it takes a little more work to learn eDonkey, but I've found the quality of files that are being shared far superior to the FastTrack network (esp. for very large files). There are times that I can't find stuff on the Donkey network, so Kazaa still comes in handy.
-
Kazaa vs. eDonkey
Ever since I've been using Broadband (Optimum Online yeah baby!), eDonkey has won me over vs. Kazaa(lite).
Alhough eDonkey needs a little more work than Kazaa to operate, the file hashing/segmented downloads/no leeching is far better than Kazaa, plus the amount of file corruptions I get using Kazaa is way too much (especially with very large files). I've also started trying Overnet, but still have loads of downloads I'm clearing through the Donkey (Yes I have tried using the donkey downloads for Overnet, but only half register in the download tab).
I've tried using Gnutella/Gnucleus on numerous occasions, bit given up due to a lack of being able to do anything with it compared to the other P2P programs... I just hope Gnutella2 will become a viable option for me to use it.
-
Since Censorship is evil....
and so is the RIAA, it doesn't seem too wrong to explain a workaround. I've never tried it, but kazaa has the option of tunnelling through a SOCKS proxy in the Firewall tab of the settings. I assume that would bypass any filtering server. If it works, you are limited by the bandwith of the proxy. You could also consider using a different P2P client; such as overnet or giFT.

Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs) in P2P...DHTs are also the key to the next generation of efficient, centerless P2P file-sharing.
Two well-known academic DHT projects are Chord and Kademlia.
Kademlia is the basis for VarVar and EDonkey's successor, Overnet. There's an experimental effort to add a Chord-style query routing option to Gnutella, to find exact files over the whole network with far less traffic.
