Re:shooting themselves in the foot
Note, GC and XB are still in the hunt.
If, by in the hunt, you mean sales almost an order of magnitude lower, then yes. To date, 70 million PS2 have geen sold, while only ~13 million Xbox and GC each (source)
PS2 got to market first, by a about a year, if I remember correctly, and it had backwards compatibility. So, while you can't really separate those 2 properties into which contributed more to sales, you can say that neither of them hurt. -
Re:This Panda wants Sources
Well lets see. There is the famous PS2 disc read error where the ps2 slowly and suspiciously reads media worse and worse. The playstation 1 ball bearings that hold the cd in place often fall right out. There is also a design flaw in the ps2 hardware that virtually halves its performance. That one you can't fix, and is why the ps2 graphics are so bad. It is getting pretty boring trying to look these things up, but I hope that helps!

This is just the new, China-only system called the iQue. Nothing new to see here folks. Next!

Re:Built in toolkitThis is surely a result in hacks that have appeared over the years which depend on hard-coded properties where one change in Windows would break many apps. Microsoft was afraid to touch COMDLG32.DLL for the same reasons. The new Windows interface is an even bigger leap over what XP's capabilities are, with 8X AGP and 256MB video RAM required to render 1024x768 with full detail! Has anyone paid attention to this yet? A PDF found on the internet describes this in detail but I cannot find it at the moment. Instead:
To use full function, the DirectX9 class GPU to necessarily In order to use all functions of such Longhorn UI, the DirectX9 class GPU becomes necessary. But, at the time of Longhorn appearance of 2005 years is, and others, it is not the case that all PC have loaded the DirectX9 class GPU. Because of that, the Microsoft offers phased UI function to the Longhorn. They are 2 stages of the " Tier 1 Experience " and the " Tier 2 Experience ". As for the Tier 1 Experience, BASIC of the Longhorn UI it is the mode which offers function. Windows XP like in the desktop, it becomes something which adds the function such as high DPI scaling and the semi- transmitted window. The picture of the demonstration which has been introduced in this report seems that basically this Tier 1 suitable function is center. " The Graphically stunning UI (the graphically splendid UI)" it designates the Tier 2 Experience, as the base vis-a-vis that. At present point in time, you do not know yet whether this, it becomes some contents. In addition, these other things, also the UI of the " Windows 2000 compatibility mode " is prepared in the Longhorn. So really in the Longhorn UI some GPU being necessary? Basic required environment becomes like under. Lowest being, DirectX7 class, to use the true UI of the Longhorn, DirectX9 class becomes necessary. http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2003/0509/kaig

Re:In other Video Game news...
SNK trumped the 16 bit competition by releasing their 24 bit NeoGeo powerhouse.
NEC releases it's 16 bit system to compete with the 16 bit Sega Genesis.
Sega's last stand, the Dreamcast is a 128 bit super system that will change the world.
No thanks people. I'll just stick to my PC which includes the powerful 80 bit 8087. -
Re:IBM announcement of a new G5 revision [+LINK]Your guess is as good as anyone's.
Oooops! Nope. Google is your friend here. Check out the original PPC 970 announcement by IBM at the microprocessor forum. Date: Oct' 14, 2002. On the other hand, check out Apple's PR announcement of the G5. Wow! Date: June 23, 2003.
Of course, IBM tried not to blow the lid, addressing Altivec vaguely, as: "[...] specialized circuitry known as a single instruction multiple data (SIMD) unit."
If IBM did this with the original G5 proc., expect that they will surely do it with a 970 revision! They are not complete idiots, Jobs or no Jobs, they trumpet their achievements, whilst trying hard not to kick Apple in the balls, whom they are trying very hard to help.
Come on folks! Until a discreet PR move by IBM, no mobile G5 in sight.

You can get a keyboard and mouse for the PS2....
Logitech has come out with one earlier this year. You can get them for the DC and XBox as well (AFAIK re XBox). Its not enough to make me want to go over to a console, but its a start.

Re:That's it.I can only find informal evidence at the moment, but Longhorn will supposedly have very steep graphics card minimum requirements: AGP 8x or PCI Express, 64MB (128MB recommended).
I found the specs mentioned here but they match what I recall reading in the press back when those stupid wafting windows were being shown off.
Hmm... OS X can do much of that stuff today with minimum requirements of AGP 4x and 16MB. Yeah, it's not terribly smooth, but it works, dammit.

Re:Maybe it's not Apple, folksThat leaves a game console.
You mean like this?

Re:So is this good or bad?
Dammit! now I've got to link to a pippin site again!
Looks like it's 4 buttons, a trackballish thing, and a standard 4 way pad.
Thanks to Newtonian_p for a link to a better site than the one I had initially linked to. Its got a nice picture that goes with it too! -
Re:Jaguar!
Yes, I remember reading about it has a 66 MHz PowerPC 603 32-bit CPU, 6MB of RAM. I thought this thing never got released but then I found this page which says it was along with a few games. It even has a picture of the machine.

Re:Agreed. But 2.5" 80GB is not bad...
I think for Tivo-like devices you'll always want as much capacity as you can get, which for now still means 3.5" drives.

Re:ummm..
It may take a few weeks.
Geez. You seriously need to learn how to refine your searches. This took less than one minute:- The Hank Files -- Playstation, the SNES CD-ROM
- Console Database has the full story, with pictures.

Re:whats wrong with first person shooters?they're fun, as long as you dont take them seriously, or believe that they will teach you how to clean and reload a weapon.
Is there danger in those who do take the games seriously? Does practicing basketball or skateboarding make one a better player or rider? Does practicing virtual move-and-shoot hone the instincts for real life move-and-shoot (here, or here, or here)? Does practicing "kill everything in sight" desensitize one, so that the same behavior in real life is easier?
In every case, the answer is "yes". Visualization and mental repetition is a widely utilized training technique -- practice makes perfect. Anyone who wants to be a better killer has to train to kill, practice killing, and visualize killing. FPS games fulfill 2 of these requirements.
