Re:Banning ad blockers will never work
I use the open source dns server "Pihole" : https://pi-hole.net/
Blocks all ads at the dns level for all devices on my network. For others I use Firefox with ublock and noscript extension to block spammy and malware scripts, and I use the extension Decentraleyes which protects privacy by evading large delivery networks that claim to offer free services, and added protection against trackers and browser fingerprinting. -
Re:So it's back to using Proxomitron and Privoxy,
Run Pi-Hole instead and point your DNS to your Pi-Hole system?
Pi-Hole doesn't have to run on a Raspberry Pi. Run a small VM, another Linux box, etc.
I have a home server running a Ubuntu VM alongside a bunch of Windows systems, so Pi-Hole would work for me.
Still, way more overhead and complexity than uBlock Origin.

Re:If only...
Except Firefox without extensions fails in blocking ads. See for yourself here.

Re:Stay away? Why?
Browsing is generally fairly bad at achieving anything close to line speed because there are so many round trips and connections to different domains.
I think you've misidentified the cause of the problem you're seeing, not to mention the benefit you'll get from 5G.
As things stand now, your mobile browser will establish concurrent connections to each domain as soon as it becomes aware that it needs a resource from them. Those connections operate in parallel with each other, so instead of waiting on a series of "many round trips" to different domains (as was the case up until the late-90s), these days you're simply waiting on the single, slowest round trip from that entire set of connections. With the sequential round trips of yesteryear, lowering the latency had a significant impact, since you'd benefit by performance improvement * number of connections, but with parallel connections, lowering the latency only nets you a benefit of performance improvement. As such, 5G won't actually provide you with much benefit at all.
If you're seeing slow page load times, the likely culprit is that the page is using an ad network that's running on-the-fly auctions for the banner/tower ad you'll be seeing. The winners of those auctions will then sometimes run a secondary auction for that spot, and so on and so on. Those interactions happen in sequence, rather than parallel, but they're happening between entities outside of your control, with your browser simply having to wait on them to figure out whose resource you should view. At the risk of summoning APK, the proper fix for your situation is almost certainly to use a resource blocker, that way you don't even ask for that resource in the first place. I'm a big fan of uMatrix (or uBlock Origin) in my browsers, as well as pi-hole on my home network.

Re:youtube union
Forget the content creators banding together, if YouTube simply keeps trying to monetize itself as heavily as it has been recently, they'll lose a number of their regular users.
Right now, it's not uncommon for my wife and I to launch the YouTube app on a TV-connected device right before we hit the hay, watch a video or two as we wind down mentally, then go to sleep. But with them shoving unskippable ads down our throats on what feels like every single video, as well as interrupting the content to shove ads into the videos if they run longer than about 10 minutes, we're quickly reaching a breaking point. We're close to either not bothering with YouTube at all for any amount of idle watching, or else I'll finally get around to setting up whole-home ad-blocking for our entire home network (e.g. Pi-hole), either of which is a loss for them.

Re:Use QoS at 1.5 Mbps per device
Sounds like you need to run pi-hole. I've heard it blocks most youtube ads and it definitely cleans up normal websites.

recently got this request
I was setting up a public hotspot for a local restaurant recently and they requested that I block "any bad content".
I installed a pihole.

Re: I use NoScript
https://pi-hole.net/ is good. Easy install and you can add mvps if you like. If you have Windows, buy a Raspberry zero W and install it there.
I have added VPN, so my phone is not serving ads either. -

Add Pi-hole to that mix.

Pi-hole®
Defeat ads via DNS before involving your browser: https://pi-hole.net/ I've been using it for a few months now. Knowing my TVs are no longer sending logs to Samsung is very gratifying. I discovered a forgotten Jenkins install that was hitting Github every 5 minutes.. oops
:( I've only had to white-list two URLs for my kid so far. -
Pi-hole or ublock when travelling FTWhttps://pi-hole.net/
pi-hole that shit.

Re:I don't see ads any more.
PiHole is your friend:
https://pi-hole.net/It intercepts advertising domains so that they never even download the ad to be blocked.

Re:Ghostery = advertiser owned... apk
What about https://pi-hole.net/ ?
I'd rather have one device block everything via host names than having to configure every single device I own, some of them without that ability (ex: iPhone).
There are adblockers for iOS that don't need jailbreaking, just as there are adblockers for Android that don't need root. They work by setting up an on-device VPN and routing all traffic through that.
...or at least there were at one time. I had one on my wife's iPad 2. A quick search just now for them, though, indicates that Apple is weeding them out of the App Store in favor of something called a "Safari Content Blocker," which isn't likely to be systemwide. (I've not kept up with iOS and the devices it runs on much since switching my phone over to Android. I have an iPad 3 that I keep around as a PDF reader, but it no longer receives updates.)
In any case, I'm about to take you up on that Pi-Hole idea as soon as the parts for it arrive. You can't install an adblocker on a Roku, so the block needs to go somewhere outside the device.

Re:No, it isn't
Better yet, run your own adblocking DNS server (on a VM if necessary) and enjoy life again!

Re:Ignoring God's gift of coal is a sin!FBAG Fight Back Against Goolag/Google (and fakebook, scamazon, microsoft, etc)
Use ublock origin, ublock protector.
- Install WebRTC Leak Prevent extension.
- Install the Privacy Badger extension to block tracking cookies.
Also consider using a hosts file like this:
https://raw.githubusercontent....
Block ads, block adwords, block AMP, block google ad services. Helps block the mechanisms Google uses to make money.
DDG !g - On Duck Duck Go, you can search google using "!g" without giving them hits.
DNS - Stop Google DNS Snooping: Note using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for DNS servers gives Google EVERYTHING so DONT use those. I run a local DNS and blacklist those IPs.
PI-HOLE: Consider running PI-HOLE and use DNS for your whole house to protect and defend the TRUTH. https://pi-hole.net/
Make sure your pi-hole uses norton DNS with DNSSEC enabled.
BRAVE is a chrome based browser which puts advertisers in touch with you directly bypassing trash. Many of the same extensions work so you can ad them in just as you did in Chrome.
Demonetize and take down the revenue streams for the bad companies.
Time for Google to Go, because its so 1984 War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

Re:Future of digital ads?
What do you think the future of digital ads will be?
The future of digital ads from my perspective.
No more chances for advertisers to fix it. I'm done. No whitelists. No browser adblock. No more bullshit. No sympathy. Every time you think you can trust a little... bam... more new horseshit. That pi-hole server running on my network is the coolest fucking thing since sliced bread. It runs in a VM, and even so, it's fast. Every device on the network is protected from a single source.
It's wonderful, and I sing its praise every chance I get. -
Re:Sounds like Slashdot
https://pi-hole.net/
Run it in a VM if necessary. -
Re:Not sure about the rest of you
I see your adblock and raise you 1 Pi-hole (no RPi required).
-
Re:So sorry...
Get some:
https://pi-hole.net/
No need for a Raspberry. Run the damn thing in a VM if need be. -
Re:Host files
Much better and protects the entire network.

Re: Youtube lost me to forced ads.
Scope out Pi-hole. It's a really slick way to do this.

Re: Blocking ads
I like Pi-Hole. https://pi-hole.net/ Even blocks adds in my phone when on wireless.
