Starcraft 2 had the best tools? Are you serious??
Ever heard of, oh, let me think: Threewave's original Capture the Flag, which spawned dozens of imitators just on Quake's engine alone, let alone the countless variations on I don't know how many different engines since?
No? How about the original Team Fortress? TF2 seems to be making Valve a buck or two these days, eh?
Or, how about Rocket Arena, a game mod with built-in maps, a matching system for 1v1, 2v2, and 4v4, complete with scoring system that carried across map changes?
You want something even more off the beaten path? How about QRally, a road racing game? Or Quess, a chess game?
All of those mods, plus hundreds if not thousands of others, were all built using id software's Quake engine and their modding tools. There's been nothing quite like the Quake modding scene since. Lots of imitators, but I don't think any of them ever managed both the depth and breadth of what that modding community did with the tools that id software supplied.

Re:No it doesn't
There is no Half Life for Mac.
Depends on how you mean that. According to this section of the Half-Life article, Sierra made one, said they were going to release it, and then never did....
Makes you wonder if it's just sitting in a vault somewhere....

Re:Team Fortress Correction
Team Fortress was for casual players. MegaTF was the shit. I used to play in the Team Pro League under [FoE]War. Team South in Texas on defense, Team North in Ottawa on offense, yelling to each other from various rooms in the apartment. That stuff was the beginning of the age. (sniffle)

Re:Brought to you by the Military Industrial Compl
Hey, I think I see some applications, too! We could make a weapon that, when used in one way, heals people of the pain of their wounds. Used in a different way--say, applied to an enemy--it poisons them!
Problem is, you would want ordinary soldiers to be able to use it without a bunch of gadgets to fumble around with. It should be easy--like swinging an axe! You could call it a bioaxe! (Warning: link has embedded MIDI)

Re:Eh? Windows on Dev Macs?
It helps me; I can play Team Fortress on my (future) Mac.

Re:5200's?
I shudder to think what it would do if I tried to play Doom 3 or Half-Life 2 on it in a few months' time.
Oh thats RICH! Half-Life will come right after Team Fortress Classic 2, the working Final Release of Steam (where Friends list works at least 80% of the time), the Steam SDK (we know thats just not here cuz they dont want us to see their awful code), and Valve's super-fast PowerPlay (remember that .com lie)! Valve is teh champion of vaporware. They had Half-Life, and thats it. The only thing they have done since is those awful expansion packs and buyup and ruin mods. Oh and try to run Gamespy Arcade and WON into the ground with their filthy Steam that is running for Worst Code Ever Written.
Heh, but ANYWAY, back on-topic (sorry, I have to vent on Valve everynow and then), I think you miss the point. A 5200 would be plenty powerful for an Apple Laptop. I image it performs quite nicely. Most mac laptop users are not going to be playing a lot of games on theirs anyway, and if they are, probably wont be Half-Life 2 or Doom 3. That and any vid card you get on a laptop will be slower than its desktop counterpart. -
Ah, brings back memories...I can't believe the old page for TeamFortress is still around. Must be for nostalgia's sake. Still, it's good to look back at my one short fleeting moment of fame, heading up and releasing the last version of that mod many years ago. Then again, it makes me realize just how old I am now.
I've lost so many contacts from those days, but I still email Robin every so often to see what he's up to. I'm afraid to ask what the atmosphere around the Valve office is in the aftermath of the recent security breach.

QUAKE
I know people have already recommended Quake 1, but you might have been misled by their suggestions of other games alongside it, creating the appearance that Quake has an equal. Honestly, Quake 1 is all you need. No matter whether you prefer gameplay or eyecandy, Quake has the hookup, and an active development community to ensure it stays that way. Hell, run the Team Fortress mod with the DarkPlaces engine and have your cake and eat it!

what is bunny hopping??I didn't know either until I read this:
To bunny hop in a straight line I usually start off with a strafe jump, before hitting the ground, let go of forward, press and hold the strafe key in the opposite direction to the strafe jump and turn the mouse the same way, press jump the instant you land, wait until you are about to land again, switch strafes, turn the mouse, land and press jump, continue doing this, alternating strafes and sweeping your mouse in little arcs. If you come to a corner simply hold strafe in the direction of the turn and move the mouse around the corner, hopefully you will gain some speed from the manoeuvre and shoot off down the next corridor. It's very hard to explain, and you learn what speeds you up from feel, so it's a case of practice, practice, practice. You will need a jump button you can keep pressing while staying in full control of everything else. The timing of the jump is critical, jump to late and you slow down, jump to early and you don't jump at all, again it's a case of lots of practice.

Re:TF2I actually did some sound effects work for this back when it was originally slated to be a Quake 2 mod by the TF team (before they all joined on with Valve). You can actually still download the MP3 of the sounds all put together, made to sound like one huge battle.
Once they got bought out by Valve, I got paid for the work I did and that was the last I saw/heard about the game really. Looking back at it now though, I hope they really don't use my old sounds, as they're quite dated and admitedly amateur.
At one point, while I was working on the last version of TF released for QuakeWorld (remember that?), Robin of TF had me take a look at a first run of TF2 for Quake2. I actually think I have that still laying around here on an old CD somewhere.

Re:TF2 Puts Duke Nukem Forever and Blizzard to ShaSomeone once speculated that Valve is slowly releasing updates and patches to TFC so that one day they'll release a patch with an update message that reads, "oh and by the way, this is TF2". It seems they keep adding features to TFC that I knew/read about being introduced in TF2.
I actually had the privilege of working on and releasing TF 2.8 and 2.9 for QW (my brief and subtle brush with fame). I actually was given the sources for what was to become TF2 way back before Rob and John got hired by Valve. It was going to be a free Quake 2 mod at the time. It's a shame that the two TF guys at Valve didn't mention their pal Ian in the article, who AFAIK worked on it right there with them from the start.

TeamFortress?
Isn't that QuakeTF not HalfLife TF, which is a horrible conversion and not anywhere near the greatness of the original?
