Re:Yet none were fired
We know for a fact and have documented at least two people repeatedly, for over half an hour each day for months on end, trying to access porn and porn-related sites. Yet, like the SEC, none have been canned.
I have found the same thing in my network logs a couple of times. In each case I have messed with our proxy server to point those requests to https://www.pokemon.com/
Same thing right? -
"Pokémon crew" appear to be behind this hack.
... I mean just look at their tagline: ''Gotta captcha 'em all'' !!

Hellooooo, 1980's?
But the cartoon sucked. Always sucked.
OK, let's review...
Transformers was aired in 1984. Cartoons (anime or otherwise) with good storylines were rare, if not unique. After all, what was the competition?
He-man? Voltron? Mazinger Z (pfft) ?
Transformers was written for young, gullible kids. Yes, it was also made to sell toys, but what difference does it make with other cartoons of today?
Anyway, it was a show about good vs. evil. And the evil characters were REALLY evil. I loved the way Megatron planned the destruction of the autobots, he was evil, and i just loved that (well actually i hated him, but you get the point). We rarely see characters like him today. And remember, in 1984, kids weren't aware of conspiracies, and intensive drama was definitely taboo. We were children! We didn't have to worry about terrorism, drugs, or our best friend committing suicide. We just wanted to play, have fun, and watch some TV.
Call me naive, but it was a show perfectly adapted for our young, innocent mindsets. And we loved it. -
Re:What would they have done with him anyhow?

Re:This is not a /. Interview...
Funny thing about child porn, is that my great-grandmother (and probably yours) was married and head of a household at the age of twelve. The main reason behind this "think of the children" nonsense is the excessive coddling and retardation of children by corporate america. Adolescents are an ideal market for anything; after all, they don't have to earn any of their disposable income, so they're not so adverse to spending it on gaudy, trifling trash
-
Re:What difference does that make?
AFAIK there is nothing to stop Pokimon from having a pokimon.kids.us website which can be linked to from advertisments within the kids.us domain.
Except that everybody would make fun of them for not even being able to spell their own trademark

Cockfighting and Pokemon
One of them was if we should ban cockfighting or not.
Be careful: if you vote "Ban it!" then, depending on the way the bill is worded, Nintendo may be banned from selling its animal combat simulation products in your state. Yeah, sure, Nintendo's official line is that it's based on the Japanese sport of beetlefighting, but American kids know what really happens, especially in a Pidgeot vs. Fearow match.

Player vs. player menu-kombat
Besides, I've always wanted to take on someone in an FF-style battle.
By "FF-style battle" I assume you mean the Menu Kombat of most console role-playing games. Well, if you want player-vs-player menu kombat, you should check out Nintendo's cockfighting RPG.

Pokemon
Pokemon are the best thing to happen to host naming schemes in a decade.
Our little boxes that don't do anything real important are named after weak Pokemon: Caterpie is the Solaris jumpstart server, Pikachu is the console server, Nidorina and Nidorino are the pair of ftp servers.
Medium sized boxes with more prominent roles are named after more powerful Pokemon: a firewall is Eevee, one nameserver is Metapod, another is Beedrill.
Finally, our largest and most critical boxen are named after the most powerful and evolved Pokemon. The NetApp filers, an active-active pair clustered together around 2Tb of storage, are named Mew and Mewtwo. Our E3000 mail hub is called Electabuzz.
OK, so you've probably noticed that I don't follow the evolutionary model exactly right (Nidorino is a medium-strength Pokemon). But who cares. It's fun, the names are spelled mostly phonetically, are easy to say and type, and there are plenty of them.
There's even an online reference: The Pokedex. Does it get any better than this? -

Slashdot' Anime Fans:Slashdot' Anime Fans: Self-Loathing Americans or Acerebral Morons?
I was wondering why so many Slashdot readers love anime. Having watched such "great" anime as BubbleGum Crisis and Robot Circus, I have come to two possible conclusions: either Slashdot Anime fans are self-loathing Americans, which is a shame considering the tradegy of 9/11, or they are acerebral morons.
As an American, I have a hard time understanding why Slashdot's Anime fans give thier money to Japan for cartoons. While it is a fact that they make such damn good cameras they can't synch a sound track to save their yellow hides. By indoctrinating our youth with Japaneese propaganda, they have been brain-washed to think that the Japannese are OK. thus Slashdot readers think it is OK to buy anime. (we won't even get into how Slashdot readers squeal about boycotting DVDs, but will run out and buy a DVD of what ever Taco posts about)
My resoning for the 'acerebral moron' part of my theory is that I just can't explain why a man in his upper 20's (if not 30's) still gets excited over cartoons. At that point you are either a wierdo, or a pedophile
Please discuss. -
Some scary ideas in this article
Some experts have suggested that advertisers will focus increasingly on "imbedding" advertising in the programs, via a split screen, an unobtrusive logo, or product placement as a "prop" in the show.
This sounds morally repugnant. Imagine a TV show where there was little plot and just a whole lot of product placement. I for one hope this never takes off.

Poh-Kay-Mawn will keep it from happening
The press slamming it is not so bad a problem as all the developers going over to the Xbox. If they all defected, you can understand Nintendo sticking with what they've got
Nintendo already has a dead product (Nintendo 64) that it's been phasing out lately (notice only two announced N64 games in latest Nintendo Power magazine's Game Watch). But Nintendo has a nearly guaranteed winner in the GAMECUBE because kids are going to want one no matter what, as Nintendo has trademarks on popular franchises such as Super Mario, the series formerly known as Zelda (when was the last time you saw Princess Z being rescued? A Link to the Past?), and especially POcKEt MONey (gotta spend 'em all). Plus, Nintendo has an exclusive contract with Rare, who can squeeze the last bit out of even the hardest hardware. (Had Rare been developing for Saturn, the PSX likely wouldn't have killed it as quickly.)

Re:Security through Obscurity, eh?And I said it second best, in the original draft of the "Karma Whore HOWTO":
"If you ever need an easy (though slightly shameful) point or two, just put in your post the words " Security Through Obscurity Doesn't Work". I have no fucking idea why this always gets the +5, but it's never failed me yet.
It appears that it still works. -

The Great Cycle of Competition
This could be a really great thing to watch. Maybe now, becuase of Playstation add-ons, X box will start to put better stuff on, and then Sony will add more, and then X box will add more... and after many years of more and more, and the realease date being pushed back for many years, Sony and Microsoft will release two game systems that are so powerful they can directly link with your brain and cost millions and millions of dollars too make, and since they have to sell it at $350 or so they will both go bankrupt... and we, the consumers, will chuckle, and then be forced to play pokemon, yet once again...

Good move by Hasbro, buying WOtC
The two companies have quite a few products in common; for example, Hasbro has the rights to manufacture Pokémon toys for the U.S. market (at least that's what the tag on my stuffed Pikachu indicates ^_^) and WOtC had the rights to market the Pokémon CCG in the States. Hasbro bought out Microprose, which made the Magic: the Gathering computer game.
This makes me wonder, though; Decipher currently has rights to produce Star Wars CCGs, and Hasbro makes the SW toys. I make a conjecture that some switching of licenses will be going about soon.
Is it easier to buy the company than to just buy the licensing? Hmm... -
Re:Cool.
OMG, you don't know what Pokemon is? One of the most successful franchise of games ever? Well, to give you a quick rundown, you try to collect 150 (for now, new ones are going to be in later games) different kinds of Pokemon (really cute "monsters"). You fight them and and raise their power. It's an RPG with a collecting theme. It's highly addictive. It's spawned off a TV show, mulitple games, and you can put Pokemon on any product imaginable (watches, shirts, keychains, etc), and a movie is being released in November. And the Pokemon Trading Card game, which is sorta like the videogame, is also incredibly hot with the kid crowd. Like I said, go to your local middle school, and ask ANY kid there, and they'll tell you what Pokemon are. For some links, try these:
PokeAurora
Pokemon.com
The Pokedex
And while I don't like emulators, I do suggest you check it out, highly recommended. -
hmmmAnd this is why companies are such tight-asses about advertising these days. It's why you see an asterik by everything even remotely intended to be amusing in advertisements. Because stupid people will sue them.
Take Nintendo for example. I was looking at the box for the game Pokémon Snap. As you can see, the box features the lens of the camera with various game characters around it. If you look at the back of the box, you'll see a disclaimer: "This is a game pak, not a camera".
Well, DUH.

Another suggestion
Maybe this cute pokemon could be the new logo.
