Re:Why would Putin fear Clinton?
Trump can't even run a business.
I think that is political BS. IF I understand things correctly each project is usually a different corporation.
He can't, Trump is a serial abuser of both bankruptcy law, and the suppliers he contracts to perform work.
This is a typical Example of one his corps abusing a supplier, rather than pay supplier what they owe, they resort to a form of extortion (ever increasing legal fees to collect a debt). And that is not the only Forum about Trump and Rcih assholes like him
We really don't need a person, (unrepentant serial abuser), like Trump as Commander in Chief.

Re:Most animals?
This subthread is really about eating their own species. Chimps have been observed doing so and it's common knowledge that lions will kill and eat offspring that isn't theirs. Just killed (wah) your first two points.
But to continue: wolves will, polar bears have been photographed doing so and brown bears will. We've now covered four main groups of large land mammals.
It is very common in fish, most all carnivorous insects will and has been mentioned, birds will, although it's usually the squab that gets it.
To quote wikipedia "Cannibalism is a common ecological interaction in the animal kingdom and has been recorded for more than 1500 species." In other words, many species absolutely will kill/eat their own.

Paper had one characteristic that might make it less than suitable for use in rain. One foam helmet might be cheaper in the long run than a bunch of soggy paper helmets.

Re:Poor UI design. javascript required = nothankyo
That would probably put in the minority I'm afraid. My point is that the feature can be useful when it doesn't slow down the page due to bad implementation. As an extreme example, would you like the URL or tab bar in the browser to scroll with the page too?
Try http://support.proboards.com/ for instance. It seems quite fast, and the top bar with search bar/page number seems useful.
Good point about the space bar, but that can be fixed quite easily, and as regards to screen real-estate, even in mobile land, the screens are getting bigger. -
Forum software has changed.
disclosure: I'm the President and CEO of ProBoards, my company creates forum software.
From TFA: "When I looked at forum software again after leaving Stack Exchange, I was appalled to discover that after four years virtually nothing had changed."
This is a great sound bite, but unfortuantely is just not true. There is a lot of innovation in the forum space going on. A few recent software releases come to mind that offer new, unique functionality. XenForo, vBulletin 5, and my company's new forum software ProBoards v5 that launches on April 29th.
I can't speak in depth to our competitor's products, but I can tell you how we have taken forums to the next level:
-Live Search. Most pages have a search box you can type in, and the threads/posts update live on screen.
-AJAX pagination - switch between pages without needing to load a full new page.
-Integrated Notifications. We push content to you, you shouldn't have to seek it out.
-Integrated mobile site
-Clean, simple UI (while keeping all functionality available)
-Enhanced privacy. More control over what you see and who can see you.
-Activity feeds for staying up to date with your friends on the forum
-Single signon for all ProBoards forums with the ability to easily switch between forums
-WYSIWYG editor
-"Conversations" instead of PMs -- you can have multiple people in a discussion
-Better moderator tools that make it easier than ever for mods to get stuff done with fewer clicks.
-We launched a new section on our homepage that shows you all forums you are a member of and information such as how many new messages you have, notifications, if any of your participated topics were updated, and more -- many forums, all on one single page.
-and a whole lot more. You can test these features in our new software yourself at http://support.proboards.com./
My main point is this: There is plenty of innovation going on. Go look for it.

Re:It just proves analyst are complete idiots
Again, how dare you bring truth and fact into this.
Did you not know that you are supposed to bash apple on every turn? Bash Bash Bash.. It's what the cool kids that cant afford an iPhone do.
It has nothing to do with not being able to afford an iPhone. It's instead a (possibly unfair) emotional reaction based on previous Apple behaviors that slashdotters have perceived to have affected them negatively. Remember when Microsoft was killing other worthwhile companies, abusing its monopoly, bribing governments, etc? When they were perceived as the "big bad bully on the block", slashdotters ripped on everything Microsoft did, even if they did something moderately useful at times.
Now, Apple is perceived as the big bad bully, for some good reasons and some reasons that may not be as good, including but not limited to:
- Not allowing developers to run their own code on their iDevices without paying Apple
- Trying to beat competition via lawsuits and patent wars
- Trying to silence bloggers via lawsuits (Source)
- Denying approvals for apps that make apple look bad (or are political, etc). Now these things don't automatically make iCloud bad. But they make geeks angry. And human nature is, when you are angry at someone/something, you bash and downplay other things from that person that might be actually good. So yes, people are overreacting in their apple-bashing. But it has everything to do with perception of Apple as a company, and nothing to do with affording an iPhone.
Your "what the cool kids that cant afford an iPhone do" line shows that you too are more interested in fighting and bickering than having a rational conversation.

Re:So remind me again...
You just don't like it because you can't actually refute it. The track records speaks for itself compared to Android.
Actually, I very much can refute it
:) Please see Aurora Feintand Storm 8. And that's just the high profile ones. If a platform can have software written for it, you can guarantee there will be at least some malware written for it. -
Re:If it can, why doesn't it?
Any one thing alone might not stop anyone, but in total they have prevented iOS from seeing issues like Android has had.
Because iOS apps have never done anything bad right? Wrong! I can find more examples if you'd like.

He posted this on his forum at http://www.worldofstarcraft.proboards.com/
know there's a lot of questions as to what has gone on with it.
A brief history of what happened in case you're not fully aware... I posted that youtube video about a week ago, and after the 4th day it started to go viral. I was periodically checking it to view comments when I noticed the hits were going up at about 10,000 an hour... Once it got up to about 150k views with over 300 supportive comments, Activision pulled it. I was really confused seeing as how there were many other World of Starcraft projects attempted and youtubed, and furthermore confused by the copyright issue. Everything inside of Blizzard's editor is copyrighted material so I thought as long as things were being produced within SC2 it was fair game regardless of title. Kid logic I suppose. The Deputy General Council from Blizzard contacted me last night to discuss the details of the "World of Starcraft" project. We talked for a while and apparently some people from Blizz were concerned I was developing the game somehow outside of SC2. Anyways I explained the details of the project to him and made it clear this mod was to be developed within SC2. After that was clear he obviously wanted the name to be changed... I'm trying to work with him to get the name Starcraft Universe (Currently in holding by Mille25) or Starcraft Chronicles. I am fully respectful of Blizzard's Intellectual property, and they DO in fact own a copyright on "World of Starcraft" and have EVERY RIGHT to do what they did. If I want to continue this project I'm at the mercy of Blizzard's good graces since they OWN it all. Anyways yesterday I was contacted by Riot games in Los Angeles for a potential position in game design. I'm not special though I will have to go through the application process and testing like everyone else, and this is not a 100% guaranteed thing, and I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do at the moment. There's a lot going on outside of what I've even mentioned here. Literally overnight I've grown from a nobody to a guy that half a million people want to design a mod. I've had professional composers contact me, dozens upon dozens of game designers and programmers and organizers. Many professionals seeking a fun hobby project even though there is NO MONEY TO BE MADE. ( At this time premium maps is still just a concept ) Finally I want to say how GRATEFUL I am to SC2MAPSTER.COM and everyone in it and all my friends there. From the Tutorials to the amazing help I've recieved in the IRC over the last four months. That place is amazing. I could have never made the transition I have from the wc3 editor to sc2 edit without that place, and regardless of what happens to me I will stamp sc2mapster on everything I can from here moving forward. Mille25 and I are going to discuss the possible fusion of his Starcraft Universe project today with mine, and we'll see what happens. But regardless I know that an instanced based Starcraft MMO will happen somewhay, somehow, eventually - within Starcraft II. Thankyou: Shawn, Onetwo, Progammer, Proziac, Lillianna, Xaragoth, Sumo, Sixen, JmanV, Helral, Slaydon, SCMapper, A1Win, Skizot, Vjeux, DarkRevenant, Dogmai, Fockewulf, HeyRevolver, Mindful, Skittles, rrowland, Phaos... and all the other names I may be drawing a blank on at this time... If you've ever helped me with the editor, I truly truly appriciate the time. There's a lot of people there who I know are more technically and creative talented than I am.. Re:How long has this been going on?
There are theories on increased volcanic activity correlating with drastic temperature changes around solar minimas.
We're currently in the deepest solar minima since a century back, and temperatures have indeed dropped over the last few years. I know of no conclusive data with regards to increased rate of eruptions and earthquakes though, but see below.

This works perfect on Ubuntu for me after...
I had a seg fault on boot until I installed libopenal-dev as found on their forum.
http://corent.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=crarena&action=display&thread=4026I also found on some resolutions I would always look up.
Another forum post also fixed that issue.

No they (the bugs) are in emacs - linux is only the device driver.

Web Site On This Topic
FYI, this site is a great resource for information on detecting popup killers.
Now, onto getting myself flamed out of existence.
I run a Web site hosting over 60,000 message boards. The service is free for anyone who wants to use it. Yes, it comes with ads - banners and popunders. Those who wish to not have the ads have the option to pay for our ad-free service, much like /. does here -- micropayments.
Now, many of you have stated that you are under no contract to have popups come up, so they shouldn't come up. But what about everything else on the page? Did you enter into a contract to view the content of the Web page you are viewing? No? But you are still viewing the content of the page, so why are you not viewing the ads that came with it?
When you download a Web page that someone puts online, they send you the layout (images, etc), the content, and yes, even the ads. You should respect the fact that the person who has put this content online has put effort into creating it, and you are repaying them with a moment of your time by closing an ad window.
It seems to be the general sentiment here that you should just do micropayments for everything online. What about the people who do not want to do this? There are many people who are less fortunate than many people here at /. who simply can not afford this, and/or are not interested in this.
So what do you do for these people? Advertisements. The ads that you view help pay for servers, bandwidth, employees, etc. Personally to run my Web site I spend around $3,500 a month on expenses (servers, etc). Most of my money does comes from ads, because most people are not interested in paying for a free service like mine. I do make quite a bit of money off of these so called "micropayments" from people who want ad-free.
If I ever wanted to switch to a paid-only service model, I know I could do that successfully without a problem, and probably make around the same amount of money. But do I want to do this? No. I would isolate the majority of the people that go to my site and piss off a lot of people. I'd rather keep the community atmosphere that my site has with the ads, than go to paid only and kick 90% of the people out who are not interested in paying.
When you view an ad, you are compensating the owner of the Web site for their efforts. Downloading a page and preventing the ads from displaying is stealing. Webmasters who let you download a page that has an ad are letting you have access to that content because you are doing something for them in return. They give you content, you view the ad. The Internet is not a one sided deal. You don't get your cake and eat it too.
Deal with the ads, they aren't going to kill you.
Bring on the flames.

Boycott the RIAA
Here is a link passed on to me by a friend. It is essentially a petition against the RIAA.
Here is the URL: Boycott the RIAA
Please show your support. Thanks! -
Boycott of the RIAA
I would like to encourage all
/.ers to sign the boycott of the RIAA showing your support for Napster. Right now the site doesn't have very many sigs, but if it had enough it could potentially have an impact on the RIAA.
Some food for thought.
