Re:Counter-Strike is the oldest eSport in the worl
While Starcraft was released in 1998, Quakeworld was released in 1996 - three years before CS.

GNU Quake
But but GNU Quake is already a thing. What more could you want?
Oh right, you want a game that frat boys play because frat boys play.
Sorry, the Bandwagon Effect says you're screwed.

Re:And?
>>I had my fill of first person shooters years ago and yet for some reason they're still being developed and offer little to nothing different over the last one.
CustomTF is still an open source project under development (started in 1999). Quake engine is open source, game code is open source, anyone can submit patches to me, or fork off their own versions. It is based on Team Fortress, but modified so that you can build your own class, using a pricing system for each component you want to buy, so you can play a scout that drops sentry guns or a sniper with a rocket launcher.
It has all sorts of interesting options to it beyond what were in the original Team Fortress. A lot more.
Latest version came out, oh, today.

The first Team Fortress was for QuakeWorld
"Built on the original Half-Life engine, the first Team Fortress game was one of the first examples of role-based team play on the PC."
Well, actually the first TF was for Quake, and later brought to QuakeWorld. Please read the Team Fortress page on Wikipedia.
BTW, you can grab an immediately-ready-to-play "distribution" of TF for QuakeWorld, nicely packaged and a quick download. I have to admit I find the menus really hard to navigate around in, but either way it's a super convenient way to get back into the original TF that made multiplayer FPSes what they are today! Take a look at the official zelTF site (which seems to be down at the time) or check the permanent forum thread at Quakeworld.nu. -
Re:BLOOOOOOM!
KTpro is pretty much standard for playing against humans. It lets anyone connected admin it via votes. For example, if everyone does a
/dm6 in console the map goes to dm6. Similar for setting all the other options.
http://servu.quakeworld.nu/ is good for finding an empty server to go play a friend on.
Or get a copy of FrogBot and play some bots, thats suprisingly fun too. quakeworld.nu/forum is a good place to look for all things modern qw. (clients/mods/maps/etc) -
Re:What's the point? It's just like every other FP
Apparently you have never played Quakeworld, which is where Quake 2, Quake 3, and mods such as CPMA got their inspiration from. Quakeworld is even faster than CPMA btw. Also, since the client and server are free and open source, with ports to most computer platforms, there is little reason not to play if all you want is hardcore, fast, and furious deathmatch.

Re:this does suck
Not so!
The quake world base was expanded quite well I think.
If you look at some of the clients that are still around today. FuhQuake, QuakeForge and of course ezQuake. (though they all appear to be dying/dead now).
Now, eQuake has done an excellent job repacking Fuhquake and providing some excellent work building that out with addons. The biggest improvement was dynamically retextured objects at run time.
So with the quake retexture project the grahpics aren't half bad.
Though all those simply build out on an existing platform and enhance the QW client/server line.
Tenebrae, which I believe is now defunct, had some excellent work in this area. Tenebrae2 looks visually appealing and was based on their work with the Tenebrae engine (quake 1 source). Bump mapping was introduced as well.
Of course look for yourselves...
Though unreleased, Tenebrae2 looks really good, but I really don't believe developement has gone very far lately. (www.tenebrae2.com)
I think T2 has been one of the better evolutions I've seen from the original Quake source.
Now go grab eQuake and then pick up XQF -
Re:Who is Zonk?
Could it be the co-creator of the infamous Quakeworld?

Re:Forget Mods
Like any quake based engine, HL2 will scale down pretty well if you know your way around the console.
Its still far more of a memory whore than its worth, though. By that I mean the ratio of resources required to the ratio of fun just makes it not worth the $50-$80 + cost of hardware if you dont want to run the game in a mode so ugly most will consider you cheating.
Personally, I say long live QuakeWorld
Anything faster than a P1 can run it (and I'm not just talking x86), and its been upgraded far beyond HL1 as far as graphics-- MD3 models, Particle explosions (instead of seeing the same 3 sprites in a row on every explosion), RELIABLE NETCODE (counterstrike players know what I'm talking about), and most importantly, It's fun. -
Quake is still going strong!
Some people still play old games. Chess for example has been played for hundreds of years. Quake... well it is only 8 years old, but it still has an active community of players, developers, competitions, etc.
One reason that Quake is still going strong is because it is that Carmack open-sourced the game engine a few years ago. This has made it possible to update the game's technology. Sure it isn't as graphically intensive as modern games, but it isn't bad looking either. The most important thing in Quake is a high frame rate, which is quite easy considering the game's system requirements.
So what are you waiting for?
Download Quake! Note that you will need the two retail content ".pak" files to play on most servers. Carmack opened the game engine, not the game content (skins, sounds, levels, textures). However, the eQuake package comes with tons of free content, so you can still play, somewhat, without buying Quake.
Join the community!
Finally, you might ask, "Why play Quake"? Well, why play Chess? Some games are classics, and they are classics because they are fun. Quake is the best game for fast, furious gameplay. Unlike tactical shooters such as Counter-Strike, Quake is more concerned with fun fast paced action than realism. So if you want slow realistic, but sometimes boring gameplay - stay away from Quake.
If you want fast, furious, chaotic and violent gameplay... Quake is your ticket to fun. -

Re:Spectator gaming: a model for interactive TV?
This has been available for several years allready in quakeworld.
Check out http://www.quakeworld.nu/ they do broadcasts of most interesting matches with commentators, "cameramen" as spectators with attached proxy chains etc. (It's also an excellent qw news/community site)
Oh, you want them to represent your country? We got that as well, at least if you're from one of the 13 countries participating in the QW Nations Cup that just started.
Quakeworld also has the ability to record the match serverside so you can view it later from any players POV or fly around in "ghost mode" along with mp3/ogg recordings of the commentating.
On the quakeworld lans i arrange we set up bigscreen projectors showing the matches and during playoff and finals we have lots of people gather to watch and cheer for their favorites. Feels a lot like... regular sport events? =) -

QW Activity
Actually there is still a very active European Quakeworld scene. There are a number of leagues and tournaments with participants from all over Europe.
The centre of this activity is focused around quakeworld.nu, give it a look. -
