Re:I hope P.B. win this trial
Questionable Content, one of my favorite web comics! It was nice of you to mention it, but I'm not quite sure what it has to do with TBP.
-
Re:I hope P.B. win this trial
This means that if they are convicted it may be illegal to have links to questionable content.
Like this?

Wow... if it ever becomes illegal to do this, then I'm in big trouble...

Re:Copyrights are immoral
If we had a world without copyright, then you could say goodbye to mass media as we know it. All the book companies would dry up tomorrow. As would the music studios and the movie companies.
Instead we'd live in a world where content is created and paid for:
* by the creators who do it because they love it. E.g. Star Trek: New Voyages.
* Those who refuse to create unless paid up front through donations. E.g. The Guild
* People who use their creation as an advertisement for hard to reproduce goods such as t-shirts. E.g. Questionable Content
* People who perform live such as in concerts or theatres. In fact I think if we lost copyright we'd completely lose the movie theatre (whose experience is now up shit creek) and would see a boom in live theatre. I think we could stand a chance where we live in a world that has Star Trek episodes performed in theatres rather then on televisions.
The draw would become seeing it in person, as well as getting the story. These groups would also film a closed session and put it on the internet for free after a week or two as a form of advertisement.
In such a world only a very few would be able to afford to live off the fruits of their labour.

Re:Mine
I don't use RSS feeds for webcomics, so here is the set of pages I regularly visit:
XKCD We probably all know this one.
Cyanide and Happiness Somewhat twisted humour.
Errant Story Excellent art and storyline.
Bunny Strange humour about bunnies.
QC Indy rock comic of social interaction.
Megatokyo Megatokyo. Has gone downhill in recent years, but still good art.
Penny Arcade Gamer comic, quite famous.
PBF Perry Bible Fellowship hasn't updated in some time, but very funny when he does.
Edible Dirt is a series of single-panel jokes. Very funny, often somewhat twisted.
Ctrl-Alt-Del is a comic about a few gamer roomates.
LFG WoW/MMO/D&D spoof. Quite funny, good art, interesting plot. Many references break the 4th wall.
Two-Lumps is a comic about cats, 1 smart, 1 very, very dumb. I think the artist is stalking my cat to get ideas for the dumb one.
Gunnerkrigg Court Beautiful art, excellent story. And robots.
underpower hasn't updated in some time, great single-page art pieces recently and an actual story before.
Girl Genius is all about Mad Science.
Bunny System is a comic about psychotic rabbits.
Something Positive is very, very cynical. It actually has 5 webcomics on 1 page. Very much worth checking out.
Head Trip is... a head trip.
FLEM hasn't updated in a while, and has a strange and rather violent storyline. Back to single-panel shorts now.
VGCats video game cats is excellent, if you play video games.
Clan of the Cats Author is going blind, will continue if she gets better. Great story and art.
Dr. McNinja The adventures of Dr. McNinja. Clean art, good story, ninjas on fire.
Code Name: Hunter Magic/technology interaction in a world strangely dominated by talking animals. Excellent facial expressions, especially for being animals.
Awkward Zombie gamer comic similar to vgcats.
No Need for Bushido Samurai story, well drawn and reasonably well written.
Giant ITP hosts both The Order of The Stick, a D&D spoof, and The Battle For Gobwin Knob, a comic about a GM who gets sucked into a world of his own design, on the losing side of a no-win scenario.
Last Blood Zombies have taken over the earth and killed nearly all humans, so now the vampires fight to protect their dwindling food source. Excellent drawing and unique story.
Chopping Block Butch the serial killer. Sick, twisted humour, but very funny.
Dominic Deegan Oracle for Hire, is a good story with pretty good art.
The Traveling Gnome Great art, story seems good so far.
One-Liners may be offensive to some, or funny to those with a sense of humour. -
Re:MineIf you're ashamed of the comics you read to the point where you completely dismiss them as "bad" or "stupid", why even bother listing them? For that matter, why be ashamed?
Here are the ones I read, and I see no reason to be ashamed of any of them. If you don't like them, no one is forcing you to read them.

Re:Do it.
If the guy has done something like viewed child porn, rape, murder, torture etc (probably repeatedly) or knowingly caused the death of someone online or other stuff (repeatedly), he probably doesn't want anyone to know. Or it's possible he just made a snap decision.
If you found out your brother likes viewing kids being abused in Japanese anime yet has not harmed anyone in life let alone a kid plus he hasn't told anyone else of his shame, what would your perception of him be?
I've read some horror stories of people killing themselves for no reason. One of the sources I remember clearly http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=504 (Spoiler warning for those that haven't read it)

Re:Review/news sites
Hmm, I've never used cokemachineglow.com before, I'll check it out as soon as I'm done this post =D
While pitchfork has it's issues, it's pretty good. Found out about it(and a fair chunk of my music catalog) from Jeph Jacques's webcomic Questionable Content. He posts reviews of music on a not infrequent basis, and between them, pitchfork and word of mouth I've got a fairly hefty amount of non-RIAA stuff. If you like indie music giving his comic a read is well worth it. Not every(or even most) strips include indie references, but a decent amount of them do. =) And his commentary alongside the comic proper has some good bands.
Finally, Resident Advisor can sometime have some good stuff. -
Re:Movie vs CDA lot of people complain and say they listen to indy artist, and while I can appreciate a good song. How do you find these artist? Everyone know's Gwen Stephanie, and whoever is on the top billboards, and they are there more or less because of the amount of money that was dumped into marketing. I've been finding most of my indie music from the commentary and content of Jeph Jacques's "Questionable Content", a 959 page(and growing!) webcomic. Jeph's a music dork, and a number of the characters in the webcomic are music nerds too. While we don't always agree on what makes a good album he and his characters have introduced me to quite a few new bands I'd never heard of before. He makes some of his own music too, which I think is worth a listen.
Pitchfork Media might be of use as well, a music review website that covers alot of indie CDs. I trust it somewhat less than I do Jeph, but it can at least expose you to music(good or bad). Their reviews can be ... a little bit pretentious at times, but one learns to just deal with that over time. Other random websites sometimes, or talking to some of my friends(trading music back and forth) are other sources for joy.
It's a grassroots sort of marketing style for sure. One has to actually go out and LOOK for the material in order to learn about it. But the resources are out there, if you are willing to put a very mild amount of time into it. Gwen Stephanie? I wouldn't cross the street to get her entire discography for free. Not even if it was in FLAC or high quality ogg vorbis files!(gasp)
Personally, I've been happier reading QC and hearing about Broken Social Scene or The Postal Service or Battles or The Fiery Furnaces or or or... Well, you get the idea. I'd never heard of these bands until I started reading QC, and now the "Indie" folder on my computer has works from many dozens of artists.
If you want some music suggestions send me a msg, I'll fire off the names of some favoured bands that you can check out. >=} -
Ads are over-relied upon anywayFrom TFA: Millions of hard working people are being robbed of their time and effort by this type of software. Does anyone else remember a time before the web was about making money via ad clickthroughs? I will -- and do -- happily part with a large proportion of my disposable income online, but it is rarely, if ever, on sites that I discovered via advertising.
If you have something that's worth paying for, then (many; not all -- see RIAA) people will pay for it! Advertising may be appropriate on some sites, like Slashdot, but I'm increasingly getting pissed off with AdWords banners appearing every-damn-where. No amount of clever "content-relevant" algorithmically derived adverts can make up for the fact that they don't belong on someone's crappy backwater blog.
Webcomics are a good example of the way it should be done. I read http://xkcd.com/ and http://questionablecontent.net/ daily; I've supported them (in a very real, more financially impacting way) by buying several tens of dollars worth of t-shirts.
Subscriptions, merchandise, who cares. Just please, stop it with the irrelevant ads already! -
Well, .php...
I don't suppose it's occurred to Microsoft that PHP is a perfectly valid scripting language used by a significant number of... No, of course they wouldn't. To Microsoft, real websites use ASP.NET...
I mean, I frequently send links to specific webcomics to people I know on IM, but most of the people I know are on Yahoo or something better. -

Contrary to current trends, the only site out of all of those in which I participate regularly is Slashdot. I don't even have accounts on any of the other forums. And yes, Digg is firmly in the 'entertainment' column, for its AWESOME PICTURES! and INCREDIBLY ADDICTIVE NEW FLASH GAMES OH EM GEE!

Re:Sorry, but the adult corps haven't a clue
The very notion of the adult sector claiming that they are somehow driving global DVD sales... that's a laughable notion at best.
It really makes me wonder just how much drugs those guys shove up their nose in a day.
This comic applies: http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic= 815 Those guys have far too much sex and have a sexual over load. The only metaphor that we have for their experience is drug use. Its sad that oversexed individuals are viewed the same as drug users, but hey if that's how you want to look at them. -

Never underestimate...
...the sex appeal of "cute" electronics...
The point is to have gear cool enough that the chicks come to you. Also likely to make every other guy in the area green with jealousy -- if they can't see you through the cloud of chicks, but they keep hearing "Can I touch it?" in sweet, feminine voices...
This would be pretty pathetic/depraved, pretty typical of Slashdot, except that I discovered it by accident in high school, when I went to fetch my laptop and found a girl... stroking it. -
Sounds like chaos to me
Pintsize, anyone? Imagine 50 of them running around a computer lab...

Hello Everybody
Maddox has managed it for more than five years now because "giving away content" wasn't his source of income. Now he's set to make a boatload of cash from various ventures including a book and a comic.
See also every commercial webcomic. Some go for a pure related-merchandise-for-sale approach, such as ctrl alt del, others push a little harder, like questionablecontent selling clothes that appear in comics.
And if your site doesn't fit into an easy category for making money, but does have traffic, I have three words for you: Ads by Goooooooogle. I hate these ads, but they work.
As for corporations and such, and their continued profit from the internet, I have nothing but a big Fuck You for them. The only area this discussion is even relevant to big business is newspapers. The answer for them in most cases is advertising. Others try to lock in their content. These are the ones who miss the point. Screw them. The third case is the BBC - no need to profit from the internet. This is where I go for my news. -

I'll recommend Questionable Content on top of that list. It updates mostly 5 days a week.
