Re:What about when your old job owns the code?
And therefore taking it with you would be illegal?
And so is jaywalking, buying beer at 20 years old in the USA, and many other stupid things as shown here https://www.rd.com/funny-stuff... . Big fucking deal. Civil disobedience, man. Think of it this way: 1) You won't get caught. The company interviewing you most certainly won't tell the other company that you shared code, and as long as you just show it to the interviewer on your own machine (not give them a file with the code) it won't escape into the wild, so you have nothing to worry about. 2) True, the company you are interviewing for many get a few ideas from what you showed them. But regardless, they would have to code it themselves (see point 1), and secondly, if the original company had management issues like that, it's almost their karma for treating their employees like that (should have trusted them more, in which case they would have stayed and not shared code).

Re:Metabolic rate doesn't vary that much
My reply to this would be that your eating habits changed without you realize it. This is very, very common, especially if you're spending several more hours a day asleep.
Except that there is evidence that sleep loss affects your metabolic rate. And while this Mayo Clinic article suggests that sleep deprivation can cause cravings, I can tell you right now that I was on the exact same diet before and after the treatment. But if you bother to Google you can find article after article that quote different studies that suggest that sleep deprivation leads to a slower metabolic rate. So you can go ahead and put your head in the sand and think whatever you want, but doctors and scientists pretty much all disagree with you.

Re:how is this news
I did some looking around about this. Movie theaters generally pop the popcorn in hot coconut oil that's been flavored like butter and colored yellow with carotene. Then, according to what I read in the comments here it often gets stored for a day or so, and then reheated just before being sold, with seasoned (eg Flavocol) salt added. So, if you turn up early to avoid standing in line, the popcorn you buy may not yet have gotten up to a temperature where the day old butter flavored coconut oil comes across as tasty.

Re:WTF?!
The War Against Terror is Funded
Despite the enormous threat that terrorism represents, there has been little attempt to put an infrastructure in place to take it head-on. Until now. In 2014, thanks to anti-extremist organizations, along with Secretary of State John Kerryâ(TM)s Global Counterterrorism Forum, society will finally have the resources, money, and time invested to challenge extremist viewpoints.
â"Maajid Nawaz, author of Radical: My Journey Out of Islamist ExtremismReader's Digest, December 2013
http://www.rd.com/slideshows/2014-will-be-better/#slide15
"20 Reasons Why 2014 Will Be Better for Us All", 15 / 21It's cute that people repeat the "all politicians are bad" mantra, forgetting that America is made up of irrational people who are terrified of the boogeyman, but have no fear of every other thing on the planet that kills less than 3000 people per year.
They don't think the funding is adequate. They don't think metadata snooping is wrong. Not because they have nothing to hide - that is a separate demographic. Because they think that anything that can be done, should be done.
Go ahead and throw out statistics and logic and facts - all of that is irrelevant. Do you remember being a kid and hearing a strange sound in the house alone at night - your heart starts racing, and despite repeating "it's only a branch" or whatever other fact, your adrenal system is already in "fight or flight" mode. You can't logic that away.
For every old Russian immigrant, there are at least four completely irrational people who disagree with you, the Russian woman, and anyone armed with statistics.
Unfortunately, there is only one way to change such a person's opinion. Just as unfortunately, that same treatment will, in certain populations that feel superior and entitled, create a backlash revenge effect. It's the same as attacking someone's beliefs with facts - attack someone's belief of superiority and invincibility with the fact of actual successful attacks. In short, I don't see a solution. Repeated successful attacks won't inure this particular population, and repeated foiled attacks just reinforces the feeling of invincibility.
And yes, you can feel invincible and scared at the same time - that's at the heart of the huge spending, the apathy, and pretty much everything else that's bad about this.
Big government advocates may be happy to oblige, but it won't stop if you get every one of them out of Washington somehow, because the people will invite them right back in.

Re:What is the real problem here?
But that doesn't mean that there are no good athletes in your country, or that they are by definition inferior to athletes somewhere else because some ethnic group is inferior in some areas. That's the fallacy here.
If you're focusing on the absolutes like "no good athletes" or "by definition inferior" then you're right but it's a strawman fallacy. Nobody's saying NO girls are good at basketball, but at the same time, you'd be nuts to say "The awesome basketball playing girls who should make up 50% of the NBA just haven't had time to discover themselves!"
Picking athletes is a terrible example because physical differences between groups based on race, sex, age, etc are widely accepted.
I agree with GP that there is no evidence that intellectual differences don't exist. In fact it's pretty much acknowledged -- the debate is what to do about it, if anything is to be done. As an example, girls and boys learn differently. Even Reader's Digest talks about it. Not very controversial -- though if you read that page, notice how they try to tie it to physical differences where possible, because that's more palatable than intellectual differences. Still they're grasping at straws when they say why girls and boys react to loud voices differently, as if having "finer aural structures" means you interpret noise as aggression. They're grasping at straws there.
I'm a pretty decent programmer. And there are others like me everywhere around Europe. So, by your logic, we should be the coding central of the world. Well, we're not. Because there are equally many (if not more) people around here that are NOT great coders, while there are certainly good programmers in the Americas, Asia, Australia and yes, Africa, with the latter probably having a rather low "good programmer" count, but not because they are "inferior" programmers
You're not taking into account non-ability-related issues like quantity and cost. If money were no object, perhaps Europe would be the coding center of the world.

Re:IRDA was 4 Mbps
Don't forget to paint over the windows or your competitors only need to rent a room across the road to get all your datas...
The big problem with these things is they need to be lighting the room for the data to flow... when everyone goes home and someone turns out the lights it cuts off all the PCs in the room and you can't do remote admin stuff like software updates and security patches. The solution of leaving the lights on will get the environment crazies on your back.
The health and safety people will probably have a thing or two to say about this as well since the level of office lighting is subject to legal controls in most countries...
Personally I can't wait to see a room of PCs with bright flashing lights on top that are positioned so they aren't obscured with the photos of the users favourite dog... http://sliceofstyle.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/LED_USB_lights.jpg

Good reader's digest article about this one
http://www.rd.com/your-america-inspiring-people-and-stories/ease-on-down-the-road/article55921.html There are a lot of tips on how to save mileage there... some of which are discussed in the comments of this slashdot story.

RIP
Sad news indeed.
Here is his interview on Readers Digest a while back.
http://www.rd.com/poll-archive-parent/games-and-humor/celebrities-and-pop-culture/politicians/tim-russert/article26850.html
My fav. part is
After he was named moderator of Meet the Press in 1991, Russert called Larry Spivak, one of the show's original panelists, for advice. "Learn as much as you can about your guest, and his or her position on the issues," Spivak said. "Then take the other side. If you do that, you will have a fair and balanced program."
I think he followed that mantra throughout.
My wife and I had only one TV program in common...alas..our sundays won't be same.
RIP Mr. Russert. -
Re:ID is an ally in this case
That may very well all be true but, I would caution you about your tendency to cherry pick from just one scripture. {It looks like cherry-picking and that diminishes your Bible quotes.} Besides, you're killing the gnat but letting a camel stomp ya. What group of people has a Biblical "Right" to take a chance on wiping out mankind because of their beliefs in scripture-promised immortality via a God who always saves us? None. You might as well be arguing a person has a right to change lanes without looking first.
What really gets ya is that while these fellows search for Physicsneedlestoosmallforthehumaneyetosee-level answers, I've already made several designs for desktop fusion-type engines that either one would end any further need for combustion engines. It's a battle that doesn't need to even be fought. According to the other SlashDot article tonite, a French inventor had the phonograph 20 years before Edison and got aced in the history books. The reason? He failed to lay down enough paper trail. I have (albeit for higher purposes than history book notations). http://www.newpath4.com/ and http://www.askinventor.com/ and all over /. posting as imitationenergy and in San Diego and on Reader's Digest posting as "aim4wood". Five years of writing and personal testimony, upsetting people on SlashDot that I post so much be hanged, laying down a footprint larger & wider than the Mississippi River. Soon the "Ford lightbulb" will go off, no matter how much testosterone hay people piled over my combustion-free needles.
I see you're trying to fit all this stuff under a common umbrella, and that's admirable, but the statement you made => "Although each advance in physics brings more and more dangerous knowledge to light, we will be able cope technically." is a blanket statement that is not always true. It's true if you're going the wrong way. Not all are... making your assumption of increasing danger from "each advance in physics" incorrect. Try to avoid making blanket statements.
Search out the living crystals. One of them has made a mechanical heart fluid engine based on the circulatory system of deer => ../2 20 2008 february 20 signs in the heavens public record open source patent engine system for all humankind.pdf . And the only "danger" this deer-like engine ~that was staring Adam square in the face when he named it~ poses is to oil barons thriving on keeping us addicted to fuels that put us all in a cancer ward right where Satan wants us, laying in agony til we breathe our last breath. Such was never intended for us, as I have been blessed to prove. -
Re:Just great!From Reader's Digest:
We took the family to one of those restaurants where the walls are plastered with movie memorabilia. I went off to see the hostess about reserving a table.
When I returned, I found my 11-year-old daughter staring at a poster of Superman standing in a phone booth. She looked puzzled.
"She doesn't know who Superman is?" I whispered to my husband.
"Worse," he replied. "She doesn't know what a phone booth is."

Condolences A-Plenty and Propulsion's Demise
Many condolences to the people harmed by this unfortunate accident. I would hope someone could tell them the healing properies of a nutrition product called Oxy-Nectar. I have written a few posts about it recently => http://communitytalk.rd.com/WebX?14@666.TsK3avvhS
K 9.0@.ef9f8ce/23877 , how if taken after a few Ibuprofens the stuff actually kills malignant cancer cells. The cancer cells are so hungry they gulp it like there's no tomorrow => giving them a nasty deadly chemical burn to their insides.
The "need" for propulsion engines was negated by Nikolai Tesla but unfortunately he died, taking his solutions with him. We will one day lose most of our combustion engines => http://www.newpath4.com/imitationenergy.htm ; propulsion engines have not been the best way to do space travel for 60 years. Don't get me wrong on this. Combustion engines are very interesting and engaging to work with. We all like the VAROOM VA VA VOOM as well as all the flames flying & sparks sparking & the ground shaking like we've reincarnated one of the great thunder lizards. They just will not be the final answer to Space Travel.
Tesla knew it and I know it. -

Absolutely ridiculous, not the first time 4 Housto
I dont see any problom here. A kid, who odvoulsly likes computers, decides to learn how to develop video game levels, so he does one on his high school. Is there any harm there? Unless the goal is to actulally do anything threatning, I see no harm. Even more upsetting: this isnt the first time Houston, has severly punished a student for a harmless act. In this mounths issue of Readers Digest, there is an artical called "Zero Tollerance in high schools," which talks about how some schools are expelling, calling the cops, and flipping out over innocent acts. To read the article, see http://www.rd.com/content/thats-outrageous-no-mer
c y-kid/ Now I can see why the school would be suspicious of the kids map (it was an urban legend that the people who committed the Colombine shooting created a multiplayer map of their school for the game Doom), and would be OK if they examined the map to ensure theres nothing wrong. But searching his house, sending him to an alternitive school... the kid odvously wants to be in a computer carrere, but this will problaly stay with him for the rest of his life. -
String
I used to travel a lot when I was young and string was what I missed when I didn't have any.You can do a lot with string.
The first time I travelled by Interrail in Europe, I took a very good radio and dropped the damn thing on the first day. After that it was a useless brick. The same thing could happen to your Mac. -
How long will the SEEDS & SEX MOVIE last ?!
Maybe they intend to replenish the stale seeds every 3-4 years. So if there was to be an apocalypse (main article link) the apocalypse survivors would have to stage an X Prize competition to pay teams of people to reach the stored seeds (without food) in time to save us all. But like you say, they'll be so hungry when they get to the seeds they would start eating them. I guess we're doomed then. Maybe somebody should make a movie about this, ending with a grand sex party at the end, our team of dedicated people wallowing around in the seeds of life they were supposed to save.
However, why wait for the apocalypse or the movie? We could start the party right now using See Through Walls in our own living room privacy > see link at the top of the window. I was of course holding the invention back a while in hopes of getting some bucks, but since I found out the idea had been leaked by the invention submission company to the U.S. military I decided to go ahead and tell everyone how to build it. Provided of course you have the money. Here's a copy of the original post (Reader's Digest January 29 2007) if you want to jump on it direct > It won't be exactly cheap with all the LCD display screens for the inside wall. -
Wow. Ignorant President sits on throne?
Wow. You had the guts to call out President George Walker Bush as being ignorant and you did it in time of war too. Man. What, I say what, is this World comin' to? > http://communitytalk.rd.com/WebX?14@117.azbxaHvaK
4 r.0@.ef9f8ce/23335 . hehehehe He also knows how to mysteriously come up with 16,000 willing & disabled bodies to try out the new robotic arms and legs. Just throw a war. Get some more study time on PTSD, try out some new brain meds (psychoactives) to see if they are strong enough to eliminate depression of having bean blown up by road bombs. Boy that sounds cynical. It might be except for the fact it is True. Politicians want to usher in (read: shove down our throats) the new cyborg age of human-robot hybrid technology. There's no better way to do that than use highly athletic injured soldiers.
I especially enjoyed the part where he dangles another alternative energy carrot in his State of the Union speech, all the while he was knowing how much war chest-load of profits the ExxonMobil people had raked in already. Question is, What are they gonna do with the loot?! The News said their investors were going to receive a 1% boost. That leaves 99%. Is ExxonMobil going to use that money to uhm SAVE THE CLOCK TOWER er PLANET? Or are they going to begin purchasing Canadian oil shale futures to keep us on Stephen Forbes happy side another 100 years? -

Am I imagining this or has someone suggested a real-time engine that would not use a battery but a capacitor? Did I hear someone whisper "Millenial Dawn" engine?
Hmm. Looks like someone is making history after I made history > I released the Millenial Dawn engine system onto the Internet on November 14, 2005. And uhm, just in case you don't believe that, I locked the original documentations in a bank safety deposit box -prior to going online- that has not been opened since. I own this Imitation Energy sandbox. I also encoded my engine by referring to it as a "vaporgenerator", a term I have not yet defined to anyone. So trot out anyone you want. Bring Goliath and I will let him read this webpage > http://www.newpath4.com/imitationenergy.htm . The copycats are performing a valuable service selling my concepts for me. President George Walker Bush and his henchman Cheney have had a major part trying to stop my engines but they are failing to do so quite miserably by passing me more State of the Union ammunition.
The walls of Jericho are crumbling. The Washington DC independent inventor shutout & control mechanisms are now exposed as an evil shellgame being wielded against successive generations of hardworking American citizens who have to leave their cherished children with strangers ("babysitters") so they can work 3 and 4 jobs just to make ends meet, which is an ongoing crime against children parted from their parents by a 296+% economic whip. When my engine gets here -as it one day will- every one of us will be rich, not just "the Rich". We are all rich in electric power sources, have been since before the day any of us was conceived.

Because when all is said & done, they want us wearing their meters too, for permission to live, permission to breathe, permission to speak and exist ->&>- I don't think so.....

Fundamental problem.......The problem is, as you said, the natural gas & oil industries are taking advantage of the situation, "fueling" people's ignorance. Matter contains energy. 99.9% of EVERYBODY has been told the *ONLY* way to get that energy is to burn it up or otherwise destroy it.

Nothing gets destroyed, just energies added and used and added again. But again, the people who charge you at the gasoline pump, or through the nose in wintertime (hose) have YOUR MONIES TO TELL YOU A CONTINUATION OF WHATEVER THEY WANT YOU TO THINK, brought to you through multibillion dollar TV advertising and Mass Media Marketing campaigns. Campaigns as in Hitler taking Europe. Read those posts on the Reader's Digest board then, if you want, write me at anyname@newpath4.com . You seem very upset. Don't be. My two engines are going to bring a sudden stop to global climate change.
When we bring the temperature down, earthquakes will slow dramatically. Yesterday a report on the News said "California is on the edge of a major earthquake, southern San Andreas fault eerily not moving. They said the energy is about to break out." Yet they said not to panic. You can't panic if you're living on top a earthquake zone about to shift, they know it, you know it, but do not panic? Wow. That's heavy.
Anyway friend, try not to get all bent out of shape. I've found some answers. Al Gore knows about my Weather Cycle continuous power engines, & his little joke-skit about how he "solved global warming" on Saturday Night Live well, he wasn't kidding around. He was serious. It was everyone else was laughing. You see, Al Gore is prepping the world, trying to help prepare them for my engines. Al Gore was laying the groundwork. He knows about my conclusions that Mankind has created four separate "Armageddons" which are all adding to one another. Spend a little time on http://www.newpath4.com/newplanetearth.htm and you'll get some answers to your questions and a little softening of your angst.

Uranium supplies no constriction on bombIf I had a dollar for every time I heard this in the Australian political blogosphere, I'd be a rich man. Australia selling uranium to China (sales to India have not yet been approved) doesn't pose any additional proliferation risk, and, by discouraging reprocessing, may actually help reduce wider proliferation risks.
As for passive solar, I'm all in favour, but there are several issues:
- it's not enough
- There's an enormous existing housing stock that will take many decades to rebuild.
- Passive solar makes SFA difference in high-density living. Do you think 2+ billion Chinese and Indians will be living in American-style McMansions, or apartments?
- Jevon's paradox. In this case, Americans spend their energy savings on bigger houses, negating the efficiency gains.
As to your objections to nuclear, low-level waste is really a nonissue...the stuff is simply not that dangerous compared to the myriad other waste we dump into landfills or spray into the atmosphere. Compared to the thousands of lung cancers caused by radon annually, LLW is a piffling risk. High-level waste is the problem, if mostly a political one. See how Sweden is dealing with it.
Finally, terrorism. Nuclear plants are a pretty tough target. How well defended is the Maroondah reservoir?

Re:I Don't Believe The Article At AllI was listening; he did not mispronounce it. As small as his vocabulary is compared to mine, he did pronounce a big word right for once.
On the other hand, the question is: did he know what it meant?!

Aw, c'mon. The vignettes on eating Cap'n Crunch and the aphrodisiacal effects of granny-grade furniture are pure genius. Clearly Stephenson has far too many ideas to fit them all into the real flow of the narrative, so he takes the odd sidetrack. I like that--I enjoy these diversions immensely and hope he doesn't stop.
Check here or here for books that maybe more your speed.

other articles arising from the bookThe Economist is supposed to be running a related article by Poundstone, and I even got email from someone from Reader's Digest who was fact-checking an extremely condensed version of the book. Both of those will probably come out closer to the book's official May 1 release date.
