You're redpilled. Join us if you want to survive.
> Has it always been *this* bad? Fuck me, I'd better stop before I start saying "woke".
Participation in the 5 minute hates is mandatory, Citizen. Stay glued to your Telescreen. Friend Computer loves you.
Kidding. It's just more blatant and obvious now and people are no longer afraid to call them on it. A critical mass of people are no longer fooled by this and they're getting called on their BS. Our culture has shifted. The bandwagon is moving in the opposite direction. They don't know what happened. But you do. You have felt it.
It's too late for you. Next thing you know, you'll start reading TD out of curiosity. You took a red pill. You don't fit in now. You can't be one of them now, they'll turn on you the minute they know you're not one of them any more. Just like they did to Pewdiepie.
This story isn't the result of some random accident. All the outlets aren't running this because they're stupid. They know this is BS. They went after him because he was redpilling people. They've been organizing these 5 minute hates since Orwell's day. People are finally breaking the spell and that terrifies them, because they can't control us any longer.
But you're free. You can't go back to being one of them any more. Sorry. Once you become aware of being redpilled, it's too late. You can't not see it any more. Just be careful, they consider you a threat now. You'll end up like that disabled guy the four 20-year-olds imprisoned and tortured if you play things wrong.

Re:I'm pretty sure....
Gabe never 'positions' himself. You are confusing him with normal 'people in high positions'. He is not a spokesman, or a mouthpiece, or even a manager. He built the entire company of Valve in a way so he doesn't have to be the decider. He's just a smart dude at a company on the forefront of VR, and like any new and risky technology, it could fail. Like John Carmack, he pulls no punches... if something sucks, he says it sucks. If he fires someone, he publicly calls them an ass (not necessarily his best moment).
He is not in Marketing, and he doesn't really care what consumers think about his verbiage. In fact, his lack of a filter is part of why Valve as a company is so reticent to talk to the consumers directly, as his quotes have been used against him many times in the past.
So I'm not saying your options are false, I'm just saying that you ascribe too much forethought into his choice of wording.

Re: Judging by his name
Time to work with primary sources. I assume(*) you meant video "5 Things You Should Know About Racism" (3:28 - 5:08). The point of the video was that for racism to work it need institutional support. She did not claim that black people can't possibly be racist. If you know a state where institutions are run by blacks and are discriminating against whites, that would be your counterexample. For inspiration, Chinese institutions discriminate against non Chinese. Perhaps South Africa is doing the something similar. But the point Franchesca is making is that USA has no institutions that oppress whites in favour of blacks, not that blacks are theoretically "incapable of being racist"
I agree that all races can hate, discriminate etc. We are human after all. But is two groups hate each other and only one group calls the shots, it would be foolish to assume that the disadvantaged group has as much of the responsibility to fix the situation as the advantaged group.
(*) I assume you meant this video, because your quote "incapable of being racist." and MTV lead to a reddit article, which linked to the Decoded video

Re:Apple needs sideloading and a real file system
Wait, what? I didn't know this. I'm astonished and excited.
But it looks like the sideloading is via pretending to be the developer of said application. How do I distribute a side-loaded application? Can I still use the app-store for IAPs? Any more details on how to actually deliver sideloaded apps as a developer?
Well, some people just publish the Source on Github.
Here's a tutorial from the User's point-of-view on using XCode to install f.lux for iOS.
Other people publish the Cydia Impactor (.ipa) Packages on their websites. Here's a tutorial for using Impactor to install f.lux from their .ipa file.
I don't think this affects your ability as an iOS Developer to submit offerings for the iOS App Store. But I would check with some other iOS Devs. to be certain. -

The best way to upset them is by being a rule-lawyer. The ultimate troll is to make an argument based on an ambiguity in Wikipedia law, which then causes the other lawyers to turn on each other.
Might have been true a decade ago, but it's not now. Not only are editors(along with power editors) fully broken, but so is the administration to the point where they'll allow power editors unrestrained abuse as long as they're promoting what the administration allows. And they'll allow that until it reaches the point where people complain and threaten to withhold donations, then shitcan or temp ban the power editor who will then use a meat puppet to continue their work. The best examples I can think of off the top of my head are Ryulong Gamaliel and Mark Bernstein.

Re:No, encyclopedias list and summarize sources
"Policy" doesn't matter when it comes down to reality. Policy can say "It's not okay to drone Americans" when the president turns around and drones Americans right? And while that's a far-off example, when someone decides that they can step over the line and present an issue with their own ideological bent, and administrators back it up? The entire base trustworthiness goes right out the window. Take any issue on wikipedia that has even a single touch on a contemporary issue, and all those policies and rules go right out the window. There's a reason why the term citeogensis exists, and you can create an entirely false premise based on wikipedia itself.
If you need an example of how bad this can get, go read the gamergate article. The entire premise of it is based off opinion and he-said-she-said view points, the talk page itself is full of people pointing it out. And actual NPOV's have been repeatedly deleted, and factually inaccurate or direct falsehoods have been presented as fact inside wikipedias articles itself. And with that I'm not sure what's worse, that people try to paint it as "well it's okay as long as x is okay." Or that people actively try to make the argument that even if it's factually incorrect or present falsehoods it's okay because people were "making opinion articles" about it.

If we're back to acknowledging that the pipe will experience significant changes in force, again, we're talking about pipe designed to hold liquids or gasses, not multi-thousand pound capsules screaming along at 600 MPH. Have you never heard of any engineering project ever that experienced material degradation or failure?
Anecdote time: A few years ago, I seriously looked into the possibility of building a house out of steel shipping containers. It's a very interesting idea seeing as how they're so cheap and so durable, but guess what? It turns out that when you try to save money by using mass-produced commodity good X for radically different engineering project Y, you tend to run into hiccups. The hiccups aren't impossible to overcome, but they can require significant amounts of money to overcome.Basic carbon steel doesn't weaken from welding (like, say, T6 aluminum does), it can actually get stronger
"Strength" in metallurgy is, I suspect, not a one-dimensional value, especially if we're talking about all kinds of different and novel stresses involved here. Off the top of my head, I saw a documentary once that claimed that it was specifically the decision to use welded beams weakened the Hyatt Regency walkway.
I wouldn't attack Thunderf00t had he not had this habit of repeatedly going off on rants about thing he has no understanding whatsoever about as if he's an expert.
I reserve judgment on Thunderf00t until I've seen more of his stuff. However, "A jack of all trades, master of none... is usually better than a master of one." Many experts routinely espouse over the top bullshit. 'Gweihir', for instance, is apparently some sort of old timer security guy around here and he doesn't have the first clue about sane next-gen cryptography or authentication design. More generally speaking, a default assumption that people who appear as though they're full of shit, are full of shit, is usually a good one. And Elon Musk is definitely prone to talking shit.
I understand the desire to write off criticism when it's clear that the person making it hasn't done extensive research but on the flipside, if there are obviously *so many* issues involved, and less than 10% of the proponents even want to have a reasonable conversation like you're having, the motivation to dig deeper is rather low. For a more extreme example, I don't spend a lot of time researching chemistry when I want to argue against homeopathy.
Anyway, the track is only tiny part of the equation here. We still have cost and maintenance of the jet engine, security costs, passenger comfort (affects how much they're willing to pay for tickets), compression safety issues, throughput (ultra-high throughput schemes exist, but have their own special set of concerns), etc. And these considerations need to be weighed simultaneously, and in an opportunity cost fashion. The obvious modes of transportation to beat here are:
A. Regular maglev, if talking about vactrain maglev variants[1] of the "hyperloop". I like maglev; I like it a lot in principle, but from all accounts it isn't cost-competitive, and thus maglev-hyperloop probably isn't going to be cost competitive. If we could make maglev cheap then that would of course be utterly amazing, particularly if we could have longer-range hyperloops with hypersonic velocities.

Any hope for practical HTTPS on home LAN?
So I guess the next thing to do is find a way to make HTTPS practical for a web server on a home LAN, particularly with DNS Service Discovery instead of a purchased domain. A lot of routers, NAS boxes, etc. still use cleartext HTTP because the browser publishers' Baseline Requirements forbid certificate authorities trusted by the web browser from issuing certificates for hostnames in the
.local TLD. And with browser publishers threatening to make the Fullscreen API HTTPS-only, this would impair video streaming from a NAS.Sources for threat to drop Fullscreen API: Secure Contexts: Risks associated with non-secure contexts; Secure Contexts: Restricting Legacy Features; Deprecating Non-Secure HTTP; Deprecating Powerful Features on Insecure Origins

Re:Engineering education than step to production
I did read your post, I just don't find your reasoning as convincing as you do. Appearing in science fiction doesn't really count as "thinking" from an engineering standpoint. I'm only counting actual engineering work.
I am reasonably confident that some engineers, somewhere have written some equations on it over the past 100 years. Certainly, it was more than just fiction. Exactly 100 years ago there appears to be some sort of paper on it in Popular Science, for instance.
Clearly you haven't even bothered to read about the competition before offering your opinion.
No, I based that comment on having read about prior small scale 'hyperloop' demonstrations which were just maglev, plus another poster's comment in this thread saying that that's all this was, plus my conversations in a Reddit thread with an enthusiast who was saying about how the 'Hyperloop One' (whatever that is) is apparently moving away from air bearing design and uses a maglev bearing instead, plus my rudimentary knowledge and suspicions that fully functional turbine jet engines of that size aren't cheap or (even if they were cheap) necessarily equivalent / mathematically useful in modeling a full sized hyperloop. That was sufficient to veto the RTFA article option for me.
*Are* they actually including jet engines and air bearings in this competition? That's kinda interesting. I mean, I'm still not going to read it, for the same reason that I'm not going to read about a contest to build tabletop thermal reactors in anticipation of a 100 billion dollar mega-scale geothermal plant in Yellowstone. I only have a limited number of minutes in the day. I find that disabusing people on the internet of nonsense to be somewhat stimulating, while reading about colossal wastes of time and money and enthusiasm to be depressing... doubly so when it's based on the hero worship of an individual as overrated (not horrible or talentless, just overrated) as Musk.
But if the other poster in this thread was right OR if the Reddit guy was right and the hyperloop focus is now on maglev in a vacuum tube... I think you must concede I have a bit of a point, yes? *If* maglev could be made cheap enough for hyperloop to be economical, it should be even more economical if we can simply leave out the bit where we need a huge sturdy pipe with custom airtight joints and various safety features. There's no plausible way that maglev could be far too expensive and maglev-based hyperloop be economical, yes? -

Re:And when people start hacking these devices?
I'm in the process of building my own tDCS device right now. I bought the components last Saturday and built the circuit on Sunday; on Monday I built the electrodes and on Tuesday I started using it (still on the breadboard). The circuit is pretty simple, just a voltage regulator and a few pots and resistors (there are many ways to do it, this approach just happens to use a voltage regulator). There is no way a 9V battery running through this circuit could generate the hundreds of milliamperes necessary to kill, or the dozens necessary to cause harm. When resistors fail, they tend to result in an open circuit -- zero current.
My circuit currently uses two potentiometers to ramp up the current to the desired level. Even with both of them wide open, the current is only 2.4mA, which is well within the safe range. (The recommended standard is to operate between 0.5mA and 2.0mA, but an order of magnitude above that is when you start to approach hazardous levels.) And of course, I run the it through a multimeter, so I always know the output of the circuit -- before, during, and after I put on the electrodes.
I first heard about tDCS in an episode of RadioLab last summer, which gives a pretty good intro to the topic. I finally got around to actually doing it last weekend.
Thus far, my experience has been entirely positive. The only glitch was yesterday when an "intermittency" developed in my electrode cable, which resulted in some phosphene flashes (due to an alligator clip + stranded wire). So I skipped my tDCS session today, and instead used the time to build the "finished" electrode cable, with soldered joints. That problem will not recur.
On the positive side, it seems to be having the desired effect. I became interested in tDCS because I have a "condition" which results in a lot of "unwanted thoughts" -- and I have noticed a remarkable decline in the frequency of these episodes.
You can naysay all you want from your armchair, but I'm actually doing this, and it works.

Microsoft believes that our PCs belong to them.
Fuck you. Again, I say, Fuck you. You are trolling. Windows, the operating system, has ALWAYS belonged to Microsoft. Only a stupid fucking troll like you would merge the operating system and hardware into one entity for the purpose of trolling. Again, because it needs to be said, FUCK YOU. Having said that, if you don't like Microsoft's operating system, bow down and submit yourself to the likes of Linus and Stallman. Otherwise, you don't have jack shit to say on the matter.

There is a simple way out of that particular problem. If microsoft forces candy crush on you against your will - pirate it! That way, you loose the right to that program . . .

The Windows app store is not something that we all want. It should be an optional add-on for all versions of Windows.
Some of us also like Aero. Windows 8 removed Aero simply because mobile devices could not run it well in Windows RT. We are asked to give up Aero solely because of Microsoft's mobile platform that failed in the market and was essentially discontinued.
Microsoft, we refuse.

Because I believe I explained how this kind of nonsense works in my comment from just under a week ago, quoted in relevant part:
I have secret evidence that your secret evidence is completely bogus. This same secret evidence also indicates that you secretly wet the bed last night. And 20 organizations have signed off on it.
People who watch the "news" are like 50 shades behind everything going on. You guys have no idea how hilarious this is while waiting for you to catch up. But the real joke here is that there are people who actually think that CNN & BuzzFeed's "raw intelligence" of Trump pissing on Obama's bed is real. Corroborating evidence? We have a video of someone who gave Trump a golden shower in 2011! (quasi-SFW, despite what you might think)
Just don't read this guy's explanation of how it was sourced from nonsense they fabricated based on this old TIL on Reddit (amazing how history repeats itself...). But yes, someone can then feel free to link me to BuzzFeed & others "debunking" that one on the basis that the 4chan post laughing about their first victim is newer than the document they wrote during the primaries.
And then we can laugh at how they don't totally "debunk" the dossier based on the fact that they can't corroborate anything worth a damn in it, save maybe that it was created by someone doing an opposition report on Trump who got paid more the longer it was. That way we can all ignore all the more mundane items in the report that were proven to be nonsense. Anyhow, there are far more interesting things to research while everyone else is still wading through the "leaks" and yellow journalism. Feel free to keep wading through the stream, hoping to uncover nuggets of truth. I don't know about you, but after that sort of filth, I need a shower.

More info about 'internet content moderators'
This is an article I posted years ago but is still relevant (and I have taken liberty to link to the The Daily Beast article as well). Thought I would drop this here:
URL: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/...
Title: [AMA Request] Moderators of the Internet whose job is to filter out illicit image uploads such as pedophilia, pornography & grotesque imagesBehind Facebook, Google, Flickr, ImageShack, Thumblr, Instagram and many other well known companies offering hosting for photos is someone who has the sole responsibility of going through and moderating image uploads to filter out pedophilia, [illegal] pornography, disturbing & grotesque images, sacrificing their physiological health for the sake of many. I am sure most people even here on the internet even at a place like reddit probably never know much more than the fact that there has got to be someone doing it as algorithms and computers do have their limits. Without a doubt, a job like this most certainly must have an emotional, mental, pyschological, and social cost. There are many possible questions to ask such a person about their own lives and their job.
Below are my questions. I will add more as people contribute questions.
1. [2013/11/24 @ 0139, -6 GMT] What is your official job title?
2. How many friends do you have? Do you find it difficult to be "normal" around them? Do they know what you do for your job? How do they support you (or not)?
3. Same questions as in #2, but in regards to your immediate family rather than your friends
4. Is your job temporary/part-time/consultant-type, or official employee working full time? What kind of benefits and perks do you receive?
5. Are there any rules or regulations that are in place by the company for the sake of people who take this job position due to the nature of the job?
6. How much time do you spend rejecting/approving images? Does the system you use for performing your job show you 'all images without bias' or only show you images that algorithms picked up as possibly illicit? How often do you take breaks (or are required to)?
7. Are you required to perform any other activities or job functions beyond this (perhaps as a way of therapy)?
8. How do you get paid? How much do they pay you? Do you think they pay enough? (especially due to possible long-term consequences)
9. Maybe I have already asked this, but how do you cope with the things you have seen to keep yourself sane, normal, and contained?
10. What does it feel like emotionally and mentally? What kinds of thoughts run through your head on the job, on break, outside of job at home, amongst friends and family, etcetera?
11. If you have already moved on to another job at a different company of different functions, is this something you put down on your resume or told them about that you did as your previous job?
12. Do you feel paranoid? Do you feel like someone is watching you / someone that might be trying to corner and flag you a pedophile/pervert/sick person?
13. How did you find this job?
14. [2013/11/25 @ 1234, -6 GMT] Why did you choose this job? Did you know fully well what you were going to be doing?
15. Are married and do you have children? How do you feel around your children? How does your job affect you in this part of your life?
16. How long have you been doing this job (or have you done this for in the past)?
17. [2013/11/29 @ 0006, -6 GMT] What would you say the character/personality traits/type a person would need to have and be to make them more qualified and capable for this job than other people (possibly applying for the same job, or just in general)?

Re:You don't know how hormones work, do you?
No, he set out to deliberately mislead. Compare his text to the content of the links - they are either shitty Reddit posts on well known troll boards, or they don't support what he is claiming at all.
Since I doubt you're claiming that the Liinux Subreddit, the Libreroot Developer, or the GNU mailing list are troll boards, I'm presuming you're talking about KiA.
I'd like to refer everyone to that KiA post again, as it's better cited than anything else I've seen on the topic:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Kotak...Does this look like trolling to you? Archived links to primary sources? Really?
Are any of the links I quoted earlier divergent from my claims? That's apparently your claim. Which ones?
I was even called out for literally quoting Rowe's claims of "transphobia" because apparently quoting that word is "scare quotes," despite the term "transphobia" having a shifting definition that amounts to "anything that a Transgendered individual doesn't like."
You know why it's best to "scare quote" that term? Because without any context it can mean actual transphobia -- firing someone for their Gender Dysphoria -- or it can mean something as benign as refusing to use some made up fake pronouns or suggesting there are only two genders. This muddying of the water is intentional -- motte and bailey again.
We don't know what "transphboia" happened there, because there's no evidence about anything that's happened in this event. As far as we can know, the "transphobia" was firing an underperforming person who just happens to have Gender Dysphoria -- as you can't be Transgender without Gender Dysphoria -- under the theory that Transmen and Transwomen deserve special exceptions to the rules. I.e., the transphobic act was firing this dev, for any reason.
Which brings us back to the original topic. Contrast the above with the pile of very specific and legally actionable claims that the original claimant, one Leah Rowe, makes.
https://libreboot.org/gnu/There is exactly 0 evidence, 0 citations on this page. None. NONE.
Which one looks more like trolling, the one with 6 primary source citations, or the one that goes on for pages making vague claims of undefined wrongdoing, including directly accusing three people of violations of labor laws.
In fact, just noticed that in my re-reading. Here's that relevant part with the names removed.
The following people should either resign and/or be fired from the FSF, to be replaced by other people:
X - executive director - the one who fired the employee
Y - outreach and communication coordinator - the bully
Z - system administrator - leaked private emails to X, which lead to the employee being fired.I would like to put forth a different explanation of what happened, which is just as valid as Leah's based on having the same amount of evidence for it.
The employee in question was sending emails they should not have been. We could speculate on what they are -- harassment, threats, some form of slurs -- but it doesn't matter. The system admin did an investigation of said user's email -- no doubt after an investigation request by Human Resources -- and sent the information to HR. HR then recommended termination, which the executive director followed through with.
Does that sound a bit more reasonable than "it's all a conspiracy because the biggest open source organization in the world just hates transgendered people?" The same one that just happened to be the target of several faux outrage attempts (Sarah Sharp's fainting couch moment, the Ada Institute's attempt to fake a rape hoax against Linus, etc) in the past few years? Really?
In the end I refuse to "listen and believe" -- translating from neo-leftist doublespeak, I refuse to ignore due process and t

r/pebble's Smart Watch Alternatives.
After what happened with the Pebble a bunch of r/pebblers put together a list of smart watch alternatives. Might be a good place to start looking into options. I've been looking into the Garmin Fenix smart watches ( possibly the newer announced Fenix 5 ) myself as aside from looks they seem to have what I want in a smart watch. Sounds like Fibit might be looking at doing a proper watch ( as opposed to their typical fitness trackers ) as well based on their purchase of Pebble's software division and some discussions I've seen about.

Re:How to get it in future? Where is it lodged?
Also there is more information as to why libreboot left the GNU. From their site - 'Libreboot left GNU on 2016-09-15, in protest of transgender discrimination at the FSF'.
Having read it... That's... an interesting interpretation of events. You'll note the complete lack of evidence in it? That's important.
Here's what actually happened, based on what evidence I could find. Leah Woods is a SJW who had a fit because of some made up bullshit that boils down, like all made up SJW bullshit, to "Open Source is a meritocracy, but we still want special treatment."
Here's a well sourced discussion on it on Kotaku In Action, the GamerGate reddit board:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Kotak...And some discussion over on reddit's linux board:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux...Basically, Leah Rowe had a fit because the FSF parted ways with a transgendered employee.
Leah makes the unfounded claim that the FSF did this because the person has a mental illness (gender dysphoria / gender identity disorder), because someone wrote criticism of said person with mental illness which looked bad on the FSF, etc. She provides no evidence of these VERY specific claims.
http://archive.is/iXIbcThe FSF make a statement on 9/16 pointing out that they have a strong anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies, as well as a so called "safe space policy" at FSF events. In other words, they have already capitulated to all the standard Regressive Leftist demands. They deny the accusation and say the person with mental illness was terminated for other reasons.
https://archive.is/HGLMaLeah specifically follows up this claim here, changing her claim to a different claim that two FSF employees were "transphobic" and "bullying" this mentally ill developer. She namedrops these two people, but refuses to namedrop the supposed victim, believing they deserve protection from any criticism or questioning of these claims. Note that this apparently does not apply to the two men she is accusing without any form of evidence of unprofessional and possibly illegal behavior.
https://archive.is/7cXtw#selec...She follows this up with more increasingly unhinged spam and unfounded accusations. She ignores, bans, or curses out people requesting evidence or disputing her one woman lynch mob. She posts an unhinged screed on her website showing she has little to no understanding of open source, all while repeating the same unfounded claims, as well as claiming martyrdom on her part.
https://archive.is/JmiTGIt's important to note that libreroot is a fork of Coreboot and being part of the GNU project means it was posted under an open source license. Which means someone could easily fork it again and put it BACK in the GNU project. Of course, proving she doesn't understand the first thing about open source, she specifically wants people NOT to do that. I suggest the name cisLibreBoot, because it seems the most amusing name possible.
Fortunately, the GNU mailing list appears to basically shut her histrionics down fairly quickly:
http://archive.is/di974In addition, it's important to realize the unhinged professional victimhood martyrdom ravings of Leah Rowe, which are REMARKABLY similar to other social justice activists such as Brianna Wu or Nora Reed, don't actually represent the Libreroot community. See, it turns out, what she did was steal access to the main repository and lock out everyone else, all while making her unhinged, evidence-free stat
