Google Maps 8-bit World Tour
It's like exploring the world map in Dragon Quest...lots of landmarks and buildings have been 8-bittified and there are plenty more to discover. They've also cleverly hidden Dragon Quest enemies around the world
People are trying to look for the places. Found some sites with screenshots:Some of the major world sites in 8-bit sprite format: http://www.bulsuk.com/2012/04/google-maps-8-bit-tour-of-world.html
The enemy characters, including the dragon King in the middle of the world, literally: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/keir.clarke/web/dragon.htm
And the guys at Reedit busy exploring. Unfortunately not all the links point to the right place: http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/rmfr1/browse_google_maps_in_8bit/c470937Does anyone know how many monuments are actually included in the map?

TL;DR The experiment has nothing to do with memory as most neuroscientists and psychologists understand it. However, it's much easier to make unsupported statements in a press release than in the peer-review process. The author of the article fell for the press release of a lab known for making outrageous statements.

Re:Waiting for the other shoe to drop
There are quite a lot of them, here's a nice summary:
http://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/comments/qtna1/upcoming_bundles/Indie Royale
Indie Gala
Indie Underdog pack
Gamedev Bundle
Indie FacekickI've bought a few of the Indie Royale packs, and there's always a game I never heard of that is pleasently surprising me. At the moment they're offering Hard Reset, which is quality wise an AAA game. In January they offered Nuclear Dawn, which is almost AAA quality. I bought both of these before they went on sale.
Vertex Dispenser is a nice casual action/strategy game. If you like Darwinia, you'll like this too.

Don't listen to Nick
Nick Denton is an idiot. He runs Gawker Media, which is itself a joke of a syndication network. He hires wannabe journalists and gives them bags of cash to bribe industry insiders into leaking stories so he can put them on his blogs. Of course the comments sections on Gawker Media sites are stupid. He also dismisses the politically charged and logically sound comments on Jezebel, which I wouldn't call the epitome of intelligent discourse on the internet, but it's definitely heads and shoulders above anything else hosted by Gawker.
Look at the comments on this Ars Technica piece: all topical and useful. Look at this comment thread (particularly this one! one of the most helpful comments I've ever read) about someone learning how to program in Perl.
In TFA, Denton says:
Give other commenters more power to "up-vote" or "down-vote" posts? "We don't really believe in the democratic process of decision-making when it comes to discussion," Denton said.
What a prick. Of course he doesn't believe in the democratic power of anything, because he's authoritarian, narrow-minded, grossly incompetent as a "journalist"—and deplorable as an editor, too—and all Gawker media sites (I'd entertain a counterargument defending Jezebel) operate on one rule: feed the trolls. Not all the examples of good comments I gave above have user-moderation systems in place, but the ones that don't just have good content that attracts good readers. Nick wouldn't know anything about that.

Questionable AMA on Reddit...
I don't know. This guy's resume and accomplishments sound very good, but he just did a pretty questionable AMA (Ask Me Anything) on reddit yesterday:
A lot of dodging and unanswered questions. At the end of the day, he's yet another typical politician. Just this one is slightly more concerned about technology than the rest of them...

Updates
Hey all,
There's a lot of threads here and on other places, hopefully this sheds some light on the claim process, and what happened with eeplox's video.
Here's the sequence, as best as I understand it:
- eeplox posted a video to YouTube that contained bird sounds.
- The automated YouTube content identification system mistakenly assigned it to one of the tracks in our catalog.
- eeplox contested the automated claim, which sent it into the manual review queue.
- One of our reviewers reinstated the claim, which triggered the response eeplox received and posted above. When we heard about the story on Slashdot, we reviewed the video and released it.
TL;DR: We messed up during the manual review process. We've cleared eeplox's video. We're working on fixing the manual review process.
I'm here in the discussion to answer what questions we can. We're not interested in screwing over independent musicians and video creators, and we want to be as open as possible about what's going on.
If you run into content claim issues with our catalog on YouTube, you're welcome to contact us directly at YouTubeContentID@rumblefish.com. We have a FAQ about the process here: http://rumblefish.com/id/youtube-content-id.php
Paul Anthony (the CEO) has an AMA thread over at Reddit where he's answering questions. http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/q7via/im_the_ceo_of_rumblefish_i_guess_were_the_newest/

Care to try a workable idea?
How about publishing your game on the pc platform eh ?
No fee for publishing, no fee for patches, you can make download content free or otherwise for your customer base to enjoy etc....And no fee for the millions of players that "can click 4 buttons over here" to pirate it to enjoy it.
While Steam and 360 declare approximately the same number of registered accounts, Steam just hit 5 million concurrent online users across all games. Xbox LIVE has 2 to 3 million people *playing just the latest Call of Duty* after its release. From a marketplace standpoint, PC isn't the big leagues.

Re:Lax attitudes toward child pornography
I'm going to have to dispute this.
Let me establish a hint of credibility. I was the top-voted comment on the Reddit post announcing the ban of
/r/jailbait. In that comment, I supported the ban decision. However, I think this situation is a bit different.First of all, this set of bans wasn't handled well. It wasn't very accurate. Just a blanket ban based on the Something Awful list, without regard for the actual content or intent of the subreddit. They just didn't thoroughly verify the SA list.
Second of all, I dispute the premise that all of what was banned was Child Porn. According to the United States v. Knox decision, sexual behavior in photos can be construed as CP, in addition to images involving actual sex or nudity. With this expanded and legally accurate definition in mind, I went to google cache/imgur and checked out several subreddits on the ban list (those not blocked by the 18+ check in the cache, that is). There were lots of 15-19 year olds in bathing suits, but several subreddits failed to reveal any displays of sexual behavior. In fact, some subreddits weren't even of minors. Some of it was, and the bans in those cases were good. But very clearly not all of this was CP.
This also begs the question, "Is it pornography because someone masturbates to it? Or does the intent of the photo matter?" That wasn't clearly defined or discussed either.
Third, see this comment on SA's motivations. They weren't as pure as you would seem to portray them. We're just taking the accuracy and holiness of the Goons' crusade for granted here. That's a bit of a problem.
I was a big proponent of the ban of
/r/jailbait after it became a CP hub. But I really don't think this current set of blanket bans was handled well. Bans must be accurate and well-executed, not badly executed and then bragged about by the admins afterward. -

Re:But does it change anything?
These protests are short-lived and I wonder if they end up doing any good.
These protests might do a little good and kill some of these bills. The problem is that the bills keep coming. How long will people protest? They will eventually tire of protests and blackouts for each and every bill. The only answer is to stop it all at its source.
This sort of legislation is being funded and pushed by the big media companies who are afraid of losing their oligarchy. If we want to do something that will last, we need to limit their funding and rethink how we get our information and entertainment. Y Combinator has already planned to fund such startup companies, and Reddit already has it's own community to gather ideas. I think that it's time to do more to address the real problem.
-
Re:"Kill" is hyperbole
I think that it's a wonderful idea. Hollywood is already on the way out, and it needs a shove. We need to see more real innovation from the public, and not the same old stale model. There's a new community on Reddit seeking to do just that:
/r/KillHollywood. I don't know if that is where the next big idea could come from, but it could be a place to give some of us a voice. -
Re:Google Needs To Get Their Ass In Gear
LOL, googling "control that they lack in their daily lives" gives exactly 5 results, these two quoted anonymous GP and bonch on slashdot and a comment on reddit
You are a nerd. Nerds absorb themselves in computers because it gives them a feeling of mastery and control that they lack in their daily lives. When someone removes that control, nerds resent it because it's like a personal attack and a reminder of their life situation, especially when the product in question becomes popular among the same non-techies who alienated the nerd in the first place. (in that bonch's post quoted by parent: "it's really like an attack on the person directly, especially when the product is popular among non-techies--many of the same people who alienated that person in the first place")
He's like reciting a script, lol.

Re:Here's why
This has been covered every this story comes up on Slashdot. Unregulated, unlicensed pharmacies are dangerous--not only do people get drugs without a doctor's prescription, but there's no guarantee that the drugs are even the right drugs or that they've been handled properly. Counterfeit drugs, outdated drugs, contaminated drugs, mislabeled drugs--anything goes. And there are other problems, like the fact they can sell to minors or that there is nothing legally enforcing confidentiality like with a legitimate pharmacy. You complain about high drug prices, but there's nothing stopping some yahoo from selling a complete rip-off (and a potentially life-threatening one, as in the link). The foundation of a civilized society is some form of centralized regulation, or you just have total chaos as the people who callously fuck over other people win out.
When my mother needed a drug for a medical condition she had several choices of drugs for that condition. She tried a common drug that had a reasonably priced generic equivalent in the USA (and was covered by her insurance). Not only did it not give adequate results, it had an interaction with another drug she was taken. There was another brand-name-only alternative drug that worked well, however, it was not covered under her insurance policy. Her out of pocket price for this drug was around $750/month in the quantities she needed. By purchasing online from a Canadian drug store (with further savings from purchasing larger pills than needed and splitting them 4 ways (splitting was approved by her doctor)), she was able to get her cost down to under $60/month.
The drugs arrived in factory sealed packaging, her doctor said the pills looked legit and physically matched his sample pills, and followup tests showed that it was working as expected, so it really was the real thing. (he did not officially suggest or approve of her getting them from outside of the USA, but he knew it was her only affordable solution)
Say what you will about foreign pharmacies, but sometimes they can be a lifesaver, literally.

Re:Get People to Panic
What Can You Do About SOPA and PIPA?
NOT TO BELIEVE WHAT GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY ARE SAYING. This is important. People are continually told that repressive measures are only for the good of the country. This is a lie and people need to be exposed to the fact that they are being lied to.
People need to be told that this is NOT a copyright issue, but an excuse where governments and large corporations can have unprecedented control over YOUR communications. They need to be told that this measure is used to enforce corporate power and greed, and that ordinary artists, like usual will not be the benefactors of "copyright" enforcement, but only the people who actually own and control the copyrights (which is usually a corporate entity) will benefit. http://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/ol56z/reddit_founder_alexis_ohanian_on_cnbc_why_is_it/
Agreed...And they have been planning this for a very long time..Watch the video in my sig to see how they started this: The terms they use are just scare words like "terrorist" used to manipulate others into doing their dirty work for them and giving them the power and control they desire. They are not being hurt by piracy in my way of thinking. Their end goal is to control the Internet the same way they control mass media. Once they control the net,it's game over for the 99%.

Get People to Panic
What Can You Do About SOPA and PIPA?
Take SOPA/PIPA seriously. By that I mean if YOU, or a company is going to protest, then do more than have a small link at the bottom of your screen (like Google). Or do absolutely NOTHING, like Slashdot. Yes I know the majority of people who read Slashdot are aware of the issues, but to anybody who pays attention it looks as if (companies like) Slashdot don't care; because they don't even have a banner add voicing their opposition to aggressive Internet police states. I read Slashdot everyday and I haven't heard anything from Management about any opposition.
The power here lies not with businesses, but with the individual (i.e. People Power); if religious fanatics can get companies to stop advertising the reality TV show All American Muslim, then certainly the majority of normal people can get companies to stop supporting Internet censorship and an Internet police state.
People need to take this seriously. People usually panic after it is already too late. As a recent example; the crew of the Italian cruise liner that sank only told people to abandon ship after about an hour after it started sinking and after the ship already started to keel over. Of course I could point out Nazi Germany; most people didn't complain because most people weren't effected until the allies started bombing residential neighborhoods in Berlin. Sometimes it takes a kick in the ass to get people to realize that their government's policies are evil.
Ordinary people need to email their friends and families about this issue, and they need to include links to their representatives telling them to oppose these overwhelmingly evil measures. They need to use Facebook, instant messaging and anything else to communicate the urgency of the issue. Also as important people need to remind the public NOT TO BELIEVE WHAT GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY ARE SAYING.
These measures will further erode copyright by giving the companies with access to lawyers and politicians an unfair advantage over smaller companies and the consumer. They need to be told not to believe Rupert Murdock because he is not trustworthy. They need to be told not to believe Sony because they are not trustworthy. They need to be told not to believe the Big Lie that congress is being paid big money to support:
Reddit Founder Alexis Ohanian on CNBC: "Why is it that when Republicans and Democrats need to solve the budget and the deficit, there's deadlock, but when Hollywood lobbyists pay them $94 million dollars to write legislation, people from both sides of the aisle line up to co-sponsor it?"

Lua does intern all strings, which has many, many nice benefits.
However, if you are dealing with hundreds of megabytes of strings that are being mutated a lot, then this interning process may be a performance problem. However, there are usually good solutions to these kinds of problems. Hop on over to the Lua mailing list or Lua SubReddit and ask for advice. Many other languages often need high-perfomance byte string implementations that for some situations.

Re:the advantage of dealing with police
...that said, police don't tell you to do something, they tell you to not do something or to leave or to let them do something. it can't really be catastrophic for you to leave a place, or to let them search you, or to not cross, or to not punch.
That sounds pretty complicated. Do you think most (American) police officers understand the law, much less being able to follow a logical premise taken to its conclusion? Seriously, have you ever been to the United States?
If the police don't have their daily arrest quotas, then they'll just make something up to charge you with.

Re:Cutting the nose to spite the face
In a communist economy, the population are slaves. Literal whips are replaced by the Type 56 and threats to your family.
In the Laogai they beat people if the production quotas are not met. Americans celebrate Christmas with Laogai made Christmas lights.
China is not communist. China is capitalist. Often the corporations and the government are controlled and influenced by each other, just like in the United States of America.
These two countries bad-mouth each other, and yet they have so much in common. Economically they are both in favour of exploiting an underclass to indulge the 1 percent of the population.
They also have censorship in China as well, like the censoring of "indecent" images and religious content.
Calling China "communist" gives the ignorant masses something to hate. It is a great diversion from the slavery of the American prison system and the War on Drugs.

Re:As the tech guy at a church
It looks like perfectly ordinary logic to me. You are the one ascribing theological meaning to it.
Proof always relies on assumptions, and if the assumptions are invalid, so is the proof. Naturalism is an assumption about reality. Don't say "I only believe in things that can be proved" unless you want to see that assumption deconstructed.
If you want to argue with people about theology and the tricks used by those nasty "apologists", then I'm sorry, I can't be bothered to oblige you. Please try over there.

Re:Comparison from the gaming world...
That's true, but ultimately, TF2 is in a differerent marketplace to the MMOs I play. Despite a degree of character-persistence, it's an fps at heart, not a MMORPG. As such, its competitors are the Battlefield and Modern Warfare games.
Yes, TF2 is a F2P First Person Shooter/Hat Simulator. It's not meant to be an MMO.
As bad as it sounds, TF2 being PC only* makes for a higher barrier of entry than MW3. Now, if you were referring to MW3 on PC, I can't help you there.
Having said that, TF2 servers can opt out of QuickPlay traffic, which avoids most of the... problem... users.
I not only run my own TF2 server (which has sadly been pretty dead lately), but I also play on Reddit's Midwest server, which is a pretty laid back, but highly populated server. Even if their ping to me does suck, and it does sometimes take a long time for a slot to open on it..

Aside from the complete lack of connection, I'm totally not getting the hostility toward SA's reddit quote in your link. Lets try a real world example here.
