Re:Seeing it in another perspective
I agree that Microsoft has gotten better in the past couple of years, but after a bit of research you're arguments don't support your thesis.
Look at the issues that you mention:
The "one"Microsoft's patch You mentioned was actually three Windows fixes (and one Office fix) bundled together
"The updates fix at least eight security issues," one of which "could allow an attacker to gain control of a person's PC via the Internet"
The three linux patches and the bugfix (which mostly just optimized some things and fixed a memory leak):
The first issue was a local priviledge escalation issue. Local meaning you already have to have access to the box. Although local priviledge escalation exploits can be used with other techniques to gain control PCs, they're nothing compared what microsoft was patching.
The second issue was with lftp. Uh....lftp is an ftp client so I at least wouldn't really count it as part of a server patch..but...This vulnerability does allow a remote site to execute arbitrary code on the local machine (it didn't say as what user, but probably as the current user).
The third issue (was actually to minor issues) were with apache. These fixed a vulnerability that would allow a user to execute arbitrary code as the user apache if they have the ability to edit the apache configuration files. The other issue was a vulnerability in a module with a non-default setup that "can result in CGI script output being sent to the wrong client".
I'm not going to say which is better, but at least be honest with your arguments. Only zealots feel the need to hide facts in order to convince others of the truth. -
Re:A matter of preference ?Out of curiosuty, how did RH force you to migrate? I've been using RH since 2.1 and they haven't sent anyone to my home or work to force me to switch to anything else. I still run Red Hat 9 and Fedora Core 1 on the workstations and White Box Enterprise Linux and RHEL 3 on the servers. I'm planning to try out Tao Linux as well. There's even CentOS-3 from cAos if you want even more options.
There's nothing wring with Mandrake, or any of the other major Linux distros. I've found them all to be of top quality. But with the myriad of RH options available now, I don't understand why anyone who has been using RH for a while would ever want to change.
Just doesn't make sense.

Re:Let's be honest
Updates are usually still handled manually with apt-get update/upgrade. RedHat has live notification, but it's still done manually for the most part, which slows down the process.
BS. Red Hat has the Red Hat Network. It allows you to automate the updates for ALL your servers/desktops. You can group your boxes into any structure you want to create and push updates out to those groups as a whole or any individual box. I have been using this to updates many Red Hat servers for a while now with out any breakage. I cannot say the same for some MS Windows updates. In fact, I never have to physically touch the Red Hat boxes. I get an email when there is an update. I go to the web site and can push the update out right away or schedule it. I then get an email when it is finished. It cannot be any easier. -

Re:Use IDE-Raid: 3Ware will do the job for you!
I'd be curious about which card you have that is so bad. I've used 3Ware products for a while now and have had zero problems with the cards themselves. RedHat on a 3Ware card has periodically been problematic (early 7.x releases wouldn't boot because RedHat broke the module mapping in their installer - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi
? id=26954) Not the fault of the card, but rather the installer. *shrug* I've since replaced that 6200 card with an 8506 (two-port parallel ATA to a four-port serial ATA) and it has continued to work flawlessly.
If you do a search on RedHat's bugzilla on 3Ware https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/buglist.cgi?s hort_desc_type=allwordssubstr&short_desc=3ware&ord er=Bug+Number+Ascending you'll see that most of the bugs relate to the installer and to their enterprise product. They seem to be testing their consumer-grade stuff with 3Ware more consistently now, but are dropping the ball with their enterprise stuff. A quick search on Google for issues with 3Ware and Debian didn't turn up much so a change in distro might be appropriate (just to spark off the obligatory flame war - hehe, just kidding).
Since 3Ware has been very active in the development of their driver (moreso than ANY other manufacturer) I would be surprised to find any lingering problems that weren't the fault of the distribution. -

Alternatives to Linux/RTLinux was never meant for REAL real-time usage. Linux will never be suitable for real-time usage and more so, never for hard real-time; the kernel is simply not structured to be 100% predictable in it's code-paths, plays various tricks to speed things up and tries to be a very good alround system; and it does this wonderfully well if used correctly. It has 2 basic RT-like scheduling-clases, SCHED_RR (round-robin) and SCHED_FIFO (Fist In, First Out), where the application has more control about the scheduling-decisions.
Please remember: RT means NOT to be fast, but to guarantee certain worst-case-latencies under all circumstances, load and IRQ-storms.
If you look for an open-source RT-system, here you go:1) my favourite, eCos from RedHat/ex-Cygnus.
It has a very, very sophisticated configuration tool (almost everything(!) you don't need is rippable from the kernel), has even a Linux-Compatibility-Module and so on2) RTEMS is also free, configurable and so on. IIRC it was used to steer the cruise-missles. The configuration is a bit more complicated.
3) number three

Re:Not all so hotIf you expect to basically start with all the power of your Linux box, you'll be sorely dissappointed.
While I stronly expect you are right that this isn't the most polished package, it's funny you picked slow grep as an example. A few months back a user told me grep was acting really slow. I was able to confirm that grep was almost 100x slower on recent RedHat installs. Turns out the bug had to do with Unicode and was easily fixed by turning it off. Nobody's perfect.

Re:Wonderful news! Not really big news. eCos was GPL since March of 2002. The difference is that Redhat is giving the copyright over to FSF to watch over. Prior to March 2002 eCos was under the Red Hat eCos Public License. If you go back even further eCos was first released in October 1998 by Cygnus Solutions. And [as far as I know] was property of Cygnus Solutions until November 1999, which was when Red Hat aquired them.
If you are interested in developing with eCos the only book I know of is
Embedded Software Development with eCos
First chapter of the book...
1.1 Where It All Started--Cygnus Solutions
Michael Tiemann, David Henkel-Wallace, and John Gilmore founded Cygnus Solutions in 1989. The idea behind Cygnus Solutions was to provide high-quality support and development for open source software. It was initially unclear whether this business model would work out; however, by the end of the first year it was obvious from the value of the support and development contracts that the business was real. The workload was enormous for the five-person company (the three founders, a salesperson, and a part-time graduate student).
It was clear that the engineering support model worked; however, the costs to fulfill these contracts were very high. In order to generate income at a lower cost, the engineers had to put their heads together to come up with an idea. The plan was to focus their development efforts on a small set of open-source technology that could be sold. The key to maintaining this development on an order that could be handled by the group was to keep the focus very small. What they came up with was selling the GNU compiler (GCC) and debugger (GDB) as shrink-wrapped software. This was the right team of people to do the job. Michael Tiemann, who contributed numerous GNU compiler ports and also wrote the first native C++ compiler (GNU C++ or G++), took on the task of working on GCC; David Henkel-Wallace worked on the binary utilities (binutils) and the library; and John Gilmore worked on GDB.
This task grew to monumental proportions. One advantage, or so it seemed, was that John Gilmore decided to become the new GDB maintainer. Making this known to the Internet community immediately flooded him with different versions of GDB. Now came the task of integrating these new version features.
Eventually, the hard work paid off in what today is called the GNUPro Developers Kit. The kit includes:

Well I think MS realizes that if they start a push towards upgrades there is the possibility that the fees involved might push the coporates to free alternatives... Maybe by pushing for upgrades only with Office and backend items they can leave 98 on the desktops and save themselves from companies going with a mass conversion to Linux?
:%s/MS/RedHat/g
How is it that the devil can decide to extend the end-of-life of a 6 year old operating system for another 2 years, and yet we blast them for not thinking of it earlier and point out how many would have been burned by this abandonment, yet Our Neighborhood Hero decides to end-of-life an operating system that's slightly more than a year old, which many people just adopted, and which they didn't even have to write, just published, and we forgive them their tresspasses and blame it on the economy or whatever?
I'd say that the end of life of redhat 7.3 and 9 is going to hit me much harder than the end of life of Windows98. My customers, too.
But, whatever, go ahead and tell me how extending the life of an essentially dead OS just barely saved them in the zero hour from a mass exodus to linux, even though the historically most-popular linux distro wants to charge people almost twice the amount - per year - that windows costs in a one time charge (that includes, appearantly, 6 years of updates). Oh, and that verson of linux only comes with... wait for it... zero hours of tech support, and.... quarterly updates and... in downloadable format, with no physical media!

How can people say BSD is dying when it has a mascot like this?! Linux needs to get its act together if it's going to compete with the kind of hot chicks and gorgeous babes that BSD has to offer!
You just can't take Linux seriously when its fronted by losers like these. Would you buy software from them? I don't think so! You Linux groupies need to find some sexy girls like her! As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?!
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Don't you wish you could get one of these? I must have misread this page where it says that errata are no longer issued for end of life products and that you should upgrade. Though it is interesting that they did issue an updated kernel for 7.x-8.0.

I missed SuSE because it's hidden in a fucking ftp-server and nowhere to be seen on their webpage.
I couldn't try RedHat because I would had to pay for it.
Calm down dude. Is it really that hard to accept that FreeBSD - and not Linux - was the easiest to get working?

Also worth noting

GNAA Announces responsibility for kernel backdoor
By Tim Copperfield
Raleigh, NC - GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) this afternoon announced one of their loyal members was
responsible for planting the "backdoor" inside the popular opensores operating system, Lunix (Stocks, Websites).
In a shocking announcement this afternoon, GNAA representative goat-see revealed that the mistery hacker who penetrated high-security defenses of the Lunix "source code" repository and injected viral gay nigger seed deep inside the kernel was indeed a full-time GNAA member.
"This is serious," goat-see began. This is a first event of such magnitude since GNAA opened its doors to new members in 1996.
Until now, we were gathering new members by announcing our group information on a popular troll website,
slashdot.org, but this is a whole new era. By injecting our holy gay nigger seed right
into the Lunix kernel, we will be able to immediately collect thousands of members. "Make the most of the next six weeks," he added. "We will grow in numbers more than you can possibly imagine".
Insertion of the GNAA backdoor came right between the consideration of Novell to buy out
the entire Lunix Kernel programming team, and will most likely positively affect the decision. By adding all the gay niggers
working for Novell with the gay niggers developing Lunix kernel source, GNAA will be all-powerful and will begin plotting
our next plans to add "backdoors" into the next favorite operating system, BeOS.
About GNAA
GNAA (GAY NIGGER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA) is the first organization which
gathers GAY NIGGERS from all over America and abroad for one common goal - being GAY NIGGERS.
Are you GAY ?

Why not? It's quick and easy - only 3 simple steps!First, you have to obtain a copy of GAY NIGGERS FROM OUTER SPACE THE MOVIE and watch it.
Second, you need to succeed in posting a GNAA "first post" on slashdot.org, a popular "news for trolls" website
Third, you need to join the official GNAA irc channel #GNAA on EFNet, and apply for membership.
Talk to one of the ops or any of the other members in the channel to sign up today!

Re:How is this objective?First of all, it's hardly appropriate to suggest not starting a flamewar here if you make a call to Linux zealots and Windows users. Now, I don't really mind, since I'm proud to be one (zealot, of course) but such a call does not appear as unbiased, no matter what else you say that follows the call.
Second, similar 'studies' by IDC, Meta Corp and Giga Research have been done in the past. I question Microsoft's marketing strategy in this case, since we all know that despite all previous FUD attempts, Microsoft have just posted first flat quarter in years. And no, they haven't lost revenue to UNIX or other expensive platforms - they lost it to Linux. In addition, it seems that even they don't quite believe in it (FUD) anymore, thus pretty obscure location of those 'reports'.
Third, 'facts' presented in IDC study (I haven't read the other two) are utter crap and are based on twisted logic, incosistencies and lies. Let me elaborate:
Over 5 years period, they figure hardware cost presents just over 4% of the TCO. Although you and I and every PHB and their dog by now know that Linux is significantly less hungry on the server end, we'll assume identical HW configuration to simplify things and call it a tie here.
Software is calculated at (also) ~ 4%. This one is at least odd. Granted, we're talking enterprise systems, so I'm not going to assume free (beer) Linux and will go with RHE, which has a cost. However, one only needs to buy 1 license per server and no client access licenses. In addition, unlike Windows 2000, RHE will include enterprise grade email and database software for which you have to shell out additional bucks if you run Windows. Arguments that MSSQL and Exchange are far superior than PostgreSQL and LDAP/IMAP implementation and that their superiority outweighs the cost difference are wrong. If there is something that you simply can't reliably process with pgsql and you need Oracle for the job, you'd need Oracle on Windows as well. Calendaring feature in Exchange is not really a showstopper anymore - one just needs to check Red Hat's offer. That's if Exchange is used for something else and not email only. We won't discuss AntiVirus software, assuming desktops are all Windows based. 1:0 for Linux.
Training - 5% roughly. Bullshit. RHCE week training + exam cost just below $3000. It is valuable, hands on, performance based cert - people who complete it CAN DO some stuff with that server. MCSE takes 7 papers to complete. Exams only will cost just a fraction less than RHCE cert. Plus about $1000 per week worth of clasroom training. This category is directly related to staffing costs, estimated by IDC at 62% of TCO. Knowing that common server/sysadmin ratio in Linux world is significantly larger than that in Windows one (I haven't pulled this out of my ass - in my company 11 NT admins manage less servers than 2 of us do on the Linux end - 59 Linux servers and of course, we have to help with NT/2000 boxes as well, while NT admins do not have a slightest clue as to what to do with Red Hat machines), staffing + training in Windows environment has to be fewfold of that on the Linux system. That's easy 3:0.
Downtime - 23%. This category is so funny that I won't even try to explain cost advantages of Linux.
Conclusion:
Running Windows is too expensive and it sucks. Having to read through latest installment of Microsoft FUD on regular basis REALLY sucks.

Linux does now have support for non-executable stack on x86-32 ( see http://people.redhat.com/mingo/exec-shield/ANNOUN

RedHat fixed orphaned versions
Possibly due to the fact that the last kernel fix was a week ago, or just that the patch is minoor, or because RH is being kind to those of us who still have reasons to run RH 7.3 just yet, but look to RH for a kernel update if you need one for 7.x and 8 which are unsupported in 2004. Thanks RedHat. Saved me a panicked kernel decision. I desperately didn't want to return from a vacation to a timetable jump of a few weeks.

I have a remote for each floor actually, though Radio Shack has since discontinued the model I like -- the new one doesn't work with X10 unit codes 11+ anymore for some reason. -
Hottest babe of 2003!
I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox.
Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!

GNAA PWNZGNAA Announces responsibility for kernel backdoor GNAA Announces responsibility for kernel backdoor
By Tim Copperfield
Raleigh, NC - GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) this afternoon announced one of their loyal members was responsible for planting the "backdoor" inside the popular opensores operating system, Lunix (Stocks, Websites).
Until now, we were gathering new members by announcing our group information on a popular troll website, slashdot.org, but this is a whole new era. By injecting our holy gay nigger seed right into the Lunix kernel, we will be able to immediately collect thousands of members. "Make the most of the next six weeks," he added. "We will grow in numbers more than you can possibly imagine".
Insertion of the GNAA backdoor came right between the consideration of Novell to buy out the entire Lunix Kernel programming team, and will most likely positively affect the decision. By adding all the gay niggers working for Novell with the gay niggers developing Lunix kernel source, GNAA will be all-powerful and will begin plotting our next plans to add "backdoors" into the next favorite operating system, BeOS.

Serious bug
Have they fixed the most serious bug from the 4.x line yet? This makes MySQL versions greater than 3.x utterly useless for many people.
I realize and reaffirm that it is wholly their right to license their software however they like, but would it really be so awful for them to make the client library LGPL?
Ah, well... just another reason to use a better database instead. ;) -
That would be JFFS
You may go the other way: use the ext2 or anything best suited to flash and supply the opensource Windows driver for it.
The Free file system best suited to write-few-read-many memory would probably be JFFS, but Google doesn't know about any efforts to implement a generic JFFS driver on Windows.
