Re:Gee...
Actually, Apache is already included in WS. According to this (all the way down), you get Apache, NFS and Samba in WS 3.0. You need ES or AS if you need the following servers:
amanda-server, arptables_jf, bind, caching-nameserver, dhcp, freeradius, inews, inn, krb5-server, netdump-server, openldap-servers, pxe, quagga, radvd, rarpd, redhat-config-bind, redhat-config-netboot, tftp-server, tux, vsftpd, ypserv.
That being said, I'm sure it's very, very easy to grab the dhcp SRPM from ftp, rpm --rebuild and install.

No software death hereIt's interesting that while Microsoft is praising their new products at the expense of their old ones, Red Hat is still pimping their old Enterprise Linux, version 2.1, even after they've rolled out a shiny new offering. From the RHEL 2.1 page, which is linked directly off of the RHEL 3 page:
While version 3 provides many compelling new features, some customers will wish to continue to use version 2.1.
And then they go on to detail three reasons why you would want to stick with the old version!
A company offering an honest assessment of their new product offerings? What's going on? Is it April already? -

Re:Hardcore backwards compatability
First of all,
/bin/sh is a statically linked minimalistic shell,No it isn't. You're thinking of
/sbin/sh, which is what root's shell is set to.And it's not exactly minimalist, either.
/bin/sh has nearly all the POSIX features, they're just buggy as hell.As far as scripting goes, every Bourne script I've seen starts off "#!/bin/sh", under the (reasonable) assumption that the shell there does not, in fact, suck ass. The C/POSIX interface bindings even specify that
/bin/sh is the location of the POSIX shell; another place where Solaris falls down in the name of backwards compatability. For re-execing shells, I typically use the header found in the Goat Book, or variants thereon. Usually I would do that in order to use ksh or bash features in a startup script in
/etc/init.d, which Solaris unconditionally runs using /sbin/sh. -
Re:An open-source ITRON system does not exist
If an open-source implementation of ITRON did exist
eCos and RTEMS both claim to support uITRON 3.0.
Furthermore, even that "open" specification appears to be tied in with privileged access if you want to see anything resembling actual code APIs or architectural details at a finer level than boxes, lines and clouds.
You mean this? The English version of the spec seems to adequately document the system; it's at least on par with your typically set of manpages. Considering that there's no actual system involved, some vagueness can be excused.
The possibility always remains that we simply don't see all the detailed material because of the language barrier
That does seem to be the case, regardless of what you may believe. I've been trying to gather information about TRON for some time, and have come across great heaps of documentation going back years, all unfortunately in Japanese. -

How can people say BSD is dying when it has a mascot like this?! Linux needs to get its act together if it's going to compete with the kind of hot chicks and gorgeous babes that BSD has to offer!
You just can't take Linux seriously when its fronted by losers like these. Would you buy software from them? I don't think so! You Linux groupies need to find some sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?!
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Don't you wish you could get one of these? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!

Kiss and say goodbye to Java language!!
No Java, no JSP man. Simply use PHP for web development.
Forget Java man and go to PHP!
PHP is 4 times faster than Java technology 'JSP' (Java server pages).
This tallies because compiled "C" program is 4 times faster than Java.
Moreover, PHP is getting the object oriented features of Java language.
The real usefulness of Java is 'Java applets' which run on client browsers but on the server side you simply use PHP.
PHP is a very lightening fast object oriented scripting language. PHP is 100% written in "C" and there is no virtual machine as in Java. Nothing can beat "C" language ("C" is a language which never dies!!)
(Java is just another language. The PHP project needs millions of Java programmers who can add the Java's language features like inner classes, static, private, protected and others to PHP. PHP already has some of java' features).
Java programmers will really "LOVE" PHP as PHP class is identical to Java's class keyword.
Read the benchmars of Java JSP and PHP. PHP tops in the speed!!

Patch timesA quick check on the net tells us that:
The patch was announced by the KDE team on August 18th
Debian had a patch available on August 21st
Mandrake had a patch out on September 9th
RedHat had an update available on December 4th
I was unable to find this particular bug in the security archives of Gentoo, SUSE or Slackware (either they were not vulnerable, or never patched). I was unable to locate any security info on TurboLinux' or Connectiva's sites.
On Microsoft's site, I was unable to locate any security bulletins older than one year. -
Re:Linux the kernel or Linux the system?
If a linux kernel exploit is fixed in minutes, then it was a pretty dumb bug.
Yup. The last one I remember like that was the IP stack bug in late 1997 that would crash your system; Alan Cox didn't have the fix out in minutes, but IIRC it was about three hours from discovery to patch.
He can be forgiven for the delay, though, because his patch fixed not just that particular exploit, but all it's variations. When I was booted to Windows 95, on the other hand, I was vulnerable to any prankster exploiting the same type of bug for months, not just because it would take MS weeks to come up with a patch but because Alan Cox's patch fixed the underlying problem, whereas MS would patch up one attack only to remain wide open to nearly identical exploits. Try Googling for "teardrop", "syndrop", or "newtear" if you want to find a more precise timeline than my fuzzy 6yo memory.
Linux mostly seems to do reactive fixes, at least from where I'm sitting.
You mean reactive to all those awful Linux worms that have been sweeping the net? I don't think so. Try pulling up a list of security updates (here, for example) for Linux and see just what percentage you can find exploit code for. I'm pretty sure the squirrelmail, balsa, and Xpdf developers aren't scrambling to write patches reacting to the many exploits aimed at their programs. -

Re:wishlist of random things
Users should be able to add modules to the kernel image without recompiling the whole thing -- even without having the original source tree.
I have recompiled a module on Red Hat 9 without recompiling the whole kernel (they provide a tool called the module development kit faciliating this on their kernels).
However I'm not wholly sure I understand the second part of your request. If someone has built a module against your exact kernel they can just give you the resulting binary and you can use it without recompiling. In order to compile a module though, you must have the kernel source available configured for your system. Without the configured tree how do you know what needs to be compiled to match the running kernel? How do you know even know which kernel to match? -
Re:Good 64 bit support
Linux was the first OS around to support AMD64. Even before it was called AMD64. WTF does "optimized for them" mean? GCC also supports it, and has 31337 CPU-specific optimisations for it, too.
You'll note that you can buy RedHat AS for AMD 64 here, and Suse here.
And for those following along at home: is he/she a troll or a moron? -
Linux is not the holy grail.I've done the other half of Mark Pilgrim's five-hour WinXP install, trying to install RedHat 9, and let me tell you, the experience sucked.
That bit about how easy it is to install wireless cards? Bullshit, linux-compatible or not, if you've got the wrong distribution. And even when you do, it might break: I've just managed to apt-get-upgrade my way out of a working wireless setup, and it's going to take a more lot of my precious time to wallow through bash scripts and config files to find out what's wrong than an XP driver reinstall would. Windows users have problems with software installing itself when you don't ask for it? Hey, look, RedHat will install SendMail, Cups and a stack of other stuff even when you specifically tell it not to.
If you're willing to download some software to make your XPerience a bit better, get TweakUI, turn off the popups and leave it be. It'll take five minutes, and you're done, forever. Star Office runs well on windows? Woo. Whoopee - try using MS Office for a bit. It's only about a billion times better. Windows doesn't come with that product because it is good enough to sell: in comparsion, Star Office is clearly only good enough to give away. I run Linux exclusively, and you know what? It sucks. I don't know if you've been informed, but it really does. Just a few weeks, ago, Keith Packard made it possible to change the resolution and color depth of X-windows without actually restarting the server. I've been able to do that in every other UI I've used since approximately tbe bronze age. Christ, it's only recently that I've been able to eject a CD by pressing the button, and wasn't that a breath of fresh air.
Mod this whatever you like, I could not possibly care less. Here's the news: this kind of blind, patronising zealotry exists so that the zealots can feel superior, and maybe chortle amongst themselves. It's for losers, in other words.
-
ha ha hareal funny, you insensitive clods!
You know what? My job (as if I had a choice to accept it) it so install this new kernel on IBM x445s and get the SOB working so we can get 16 CPUs and 64GB of RAM on a single machine (and we're planning on a farm of these - don't ask, it's a "unique" situation...). This is supposdly available only under RH Adv Server 3.0 (but not really)which uses "features" from the new 2.6 kernel.
Considering RH AS 3.0 isn't coming out until the 15th, this is going to be ugly. Ugly, as is become-a-drunk-and-heroin-addict ugly.
Playing with cutting/bleeding edge tech is one thing. Playing with bleeding edge tech on a deadline is quite another.
But as much as I bitch about it, it's still kinda cool...

Ask Bob Young if he likes football.
What Happens When a Linux Geek Takes Over a Canadian Football Team ?
* Bob Young, founder of Red Hat and Lulu.com buys Canadian football team the Hamilton Ticats.
* Ticats playbook submitted to SourceForge for development. Fans of the Canadian Football League are invited to submit revisions.
* Initially puzzled by open source strategy, other CFL teams begin using the plays.
* Ticats adopt open-channel Wi-Fi for communications between coaches and quarterbacks using new helmet developed under the GPL, known as the GNU-Helmet. Xs and Os on playbook diagrams are replaced with 1s and 0s. Fans begin to show up at games with laptops to IM the assistant coaches.
* Ticats playbook becomes bestseller .
* First season is devoted to eliminating bugs. Bob Young called an eccentric, fringe player. Headline screams "Playbook Bazaar -- Bizarre!"
* Innovation in CFL play explodes. Stadiums host record crowds. US newspapers run stories, but most assume that the sport in question is actually soccer.
* Bill Gates surprises press by purchasing Seattle Seahawks.
* In the third season, CFL continues to gain momentum. Young brokers a revolutionary agreement with the Australian Football League incorporating new rules and tactics. Games become more interesting. Cable channel TechTV signs contract to air every CFL game. US viewers begin to abandon NFL games in droves.
* NFL sues, claiming a process patent on option plays
* Clear-Channel takes over 90% of US stadiums and inks 10-year contract with NFL. Fans are routinely strip-searched for illicit food and drink items as they enter stadiums.
* Gates responds to decrease in attendance at games by inking broadcast deal with all four networks to air games simultaneously.
* Canada announces increase in immigration. MIT Beavers win Division Championship.
* Electronic Arts announces that "Madden NFL 2007" will be open source. Furor erupts. New version quickly surfaces in which characters can be forced to play soccer.
* NYT article notes that enrollment in youth football programs across North America are up, as are demands for reinforced padding and elastic straps for eyeglasses. 'Football is all about brains!" bellow coaches.
* 2010 - Ticats win Grey Cup for the first time in decades. Average size of defensive lineman is 5'7", 155 lbs. -
Re:Oh, catch the hell up.Remember that ever since Red Hat bought Cygnus, GCC is in effect a Red Hat Linux product. Most of the significant development on GCC is performed by Red Hat Linux employees. Therefore OpenBSD is a de facto offspring of Red Hat.
And of course, GCC is under copyright by our good friends at Richard Stallman's Free Software Foundation (home of GNU).
It is interesting to note that every OpenBSD software, including OpenBSD itself, requires a Red Hat product, in fact owes its practical existence to Red Hat GCC. Pretty Cool.

JFFS2
Try using the JFFS2 filesystem. This is a Linux filesystem designed for flash media - it is aware of the media's limitations and try to get the maximum life possible. Flash cards are pretty cheap, and might be your best option if you want total silence.
Another option would be to use a laptop hard drive (with a laptop IDE to standard IDE convertor), an IBM microdrive, or even a standard IDE drive with good acoustic specs (some are designed to be quiet). -

Red Hat users
I expect Arjan to have updated Red Hat packages soon at http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.5/
Remember though that some things have changed between 2.4 and 2.6 that can't just be worked around by installing new packages. (USB module names, some mount points, that kind of thing.) If you want a clean boot you will have to change some of the init scripts, and this will break booting 2.4. So it's a bit all or nothing at the moment, and I recommend people who aren't convinced it will do everything they need it to do (I couldn't get my network card working under 2.6) stay on 2.4 until it's released proper.
Check out http://thomer.com/linux/migrate-to-2.6.html and http://www.fearthecow.net/index.pl?section=guest&p age=kernel for the information for making these kernels work on RHL. -

Re:Are SCO and FUD synonyms?)
From RedHat: To further protect the integrity of Open Source software and the Open Source community, Red Hat has established the Open Source Now Fund. The purpose of the fund will be to cover legal expenses associated with infringement claims brought against companies developing software under the GPL license and non-profit organizations supporting the efforts of companies developing software under a GPL license. Red Hat has pledged one million dollars to be provided as funding in this initiative. Do you really think RH will just let their customers hang out to dry on this one? This is my point: they aren't just sitting back waiting for SCO to attack their customers, they are actively engaged in going after SCO right now in order to prevent SCO from ever having an opportunity to go after users.

Strange bedfellows -- Red Hat Linux and NetBSDEver since Red Hat bought Cygnus, GCC is in effect a Red Hat Linux product. Most of the significant development on GCC is performed by Red Hat Linux employees. Therefore NetBSD is a [possibly illegitimate] offspring of Red Hat. And of course, GCC is under copyright by our good friends at Richard Stallman's Free Software Foundation (home of GNU).
