Oh yeah, I would really want to take advice from EDS about what systems are scaleable. I mean look what Colorado got for our $200,000,000 in taxpayer money: --

the guy seems pretty embarrased about the whole thing (as he should be).
republican or dem, this kind of behavior is stupid. (un)fortunately, neither side seems to have any shortage of asshats. -
Dammit, you made me hunt down the article
In Colorado
False registration is going to cause registrations that are legitimate to get thrown out, causing cries of voter disenfranchisement. If that's not encouraging vote fraud by deed, I don't know what is. And it's being done by a group that considers themselves to be champions of everyman. This group pays their employees to collect Democrat and unaffiliated registrations. Do you really think that every Republican registration is being turned in? Voter registration needs to be left out of the hands of these partisan groups - on BOTH sides.
I'm going to add this because I think it's important to get out the message, and I don't think that everyone will read to the bottom of the article:
A Colorado nonprofit has set up a hot line for voters who believe they've been unfairly turned away from the polls this election. The nonpartisan http://fairvotecolorado.org/ has assembled a team of six volunteer attorneys in Denver - and others in at least 12 outlying counties - to assist voters starting Monday, when early voting begins. They're reachable toll-free at 888-839-4301.
Colorado, a state which typically votes Republican, is extremely proactive as far as protecting voters rights on both sides. If your state doesn't have this sort of service, find out why! -
Re:How is this "voter intimidation"?
Don't take Drudge's word for it, Dems already admitted it. It appears this thing is, in fact, a legitimate document.
--trb -
Re:How is this "voter intimidation"?
Did you read the same JPG I did? It's calling for, at best, Democrats to raise a fuss when there's nothing to raise a fuss about, and at worst claiming voter fraud where none exists. And this is from the party's MANUAL.
Addressing your second concern about the reliability of Drudge, Democrats have already admitted it's legit.
--trb -
Re:what's worse?
The Democrats confirmed that the page in question is legit:
But Democrats, who verified as authentic the page from a playbook called "Colorado Election Day Manual: A detailed guide to voting in Colorado," said they must be pro-active to assure that minorities and all others are not scared away from the polls.
--trb -
Tell me again that Slashdot isn't biased...
...to the left. Voter fraud goes on in every election, by lots of people in both parties. And it's not like there's been a lack of stories about Democratic voter fraud. And pointing this out DOES NOT ENDORSE IT. All voter fraud should be punished. But it's a damn disgrace (and a big help to the Democratic party) to only point it out when it helps Republicans. Since Slashdot won't report it when Dem s do it, here's a recent sampler:
- Attempted Democratic Voter Fraud In Nashville
- Voter Fraud In South Dakota
- Colorado To Tackle Voter Fraud Fears
- Rendell will send monitors to elections offices
- ACORN Voter Registration Fraud Allegations Are Just the Tip of the Iceberg, Says Employment Policies Institute
And lets not forget the revelation that the Democratic Party plans a pre-emptive strike by alleging voter fraud in close races, even if there's absolutely no proof of it.
Slashdot; not fair, and damn sure not balanced. -
Excruciating Editorial BiasOnce again, we have an abysmal editorial decision on Slashdot.
A submission from Indomitus, a left-leaning reader (nothing wrong with that) comes in citing the dailyKOS as a source of news, and the editor doesn't even explain that that site is so unbelievably slanted as to be unreadable.
Just as a test, I've submitted the following story just to see what response I get. I'll be FLOORED if it gets through, although it is at least as accurate as the post Michael approved.
Submission:
The DNC has now confirmed that the excerpt from their Training Manual reported on the Drudge Report is authentic.
The excerpt calls election workers to issue press releases and give interviews about voter suppression, and that, "If no signs of intimidation techniques have emerged yet, launch a pre-emptive strike".
-
Never goes just one way
While I am certainly no Republican or Republican supporter (I am voting Libertarian), I just wanted to point everyone to this. It is things like this that led me to believe that both parties are corrupt (and EQUALLY corrupt) and that looking elsewhere is in the best interest of all rational people. Now let's hope that such heresy does not catch the ire of the moderators and get me modded down
-
What about DNC orders to claim voter intimidation?
I'm not disputing that this is news, but is it not also news that the DNC has issued marching orders to it's operatives that instruct them to claim voter intimidation even if no such evidence exists?
I like the new politics section, but at least have some semblance of balance about what stories get posted.

I remember reading about a similar case several years ago.
I remember reading about a similar case earlier this year ;-) -
Re:What A Horrible Summary..
For starters, he trumpets the oft-stated mistake that there is no connection between Iraq and al Qaeda
Check your sources, to say that that memo is misleading is to be fawningly polite. The truth is its bullshit.
Bush has yet to give a coherent argument about why we needed to invade Iraq, but not invade Syria or Saudi Arabia or Iran or Jordan or etc, because all those other countries have had minor or low level connections with terroists organizations too, but we aren't attacking them. This is the problem: even if it was true in a technical sense (low level connections may have existed), it wasn't true in a fundamental or practical sense because:- Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11.
- Hussein was extremely suspicious of the radical Islamists, he himself was a secular nationalist, not a religious nut. Within Iraq he actively suppresed Islamic fundamentalism.
- Removing Hussein did *not* hurt Al Queada in any way. Al Queda was in Afghanistan, but they had no known presence in Iraq (for the reason given above) until we removed Hussein and the Iraqi army which allowed the terrorists to infiltrate into Iraq.
- Americans are now more threatened by Al Queda than ever before, because AQ has about 300,000+ convenient US targets in Iraq now to go after, a substantial population to hide within, and a real, *genuine* resistance movement (anti-West Islamic fundamentalists in Iraq) to complicate attempts at stopping AQ. Had we kept our presence to just Afghanistan, we would be now in a much better situation.
Next, he brings out the ridiculous draft claim. First, re-enlistment rates are at record highs.
No, they aren't. The military, for the most part, for most units, is meeting its own targets for retention, but that doesn't make them records. Second, the big exception is the National Guard, which is dramatically failing to meet its retention goals nationwide, and because half the troops in Iraq are reservists, this is a serious problem. (If Bush plans more of these wars, the Army may be forced to abandon the concept of integrating the Guard into the full-time military units). Third, we don't know yet what the full effect of multiple, back-to-back, year-long deployments are going to do in the long run to the Army. If the Army can end those long deployments soon, it may have no effect, but if they can't stop it because of a chronic lack of combat troops, it could start to have a bad effect. Fourth, the longer the Army uses "stop loss" orders (Bush's stealth draft) to keep people from going home after serving their time, that will have a negative impact on people too (particularly the Guard). Finally, it depends on who you ask, many units aren't having major problems with retention, but some definitely are.
Second, there will not be a draft. Bush has stated that he doesn't want a draft
I believe the whole issue in dispute here is whether we can trust Shrubby anymore. I believe this about as much as I believed his father's "no new taxes" pledge.
Of course we will first dismantle the army and reassemble it -- the first one wanted to kill us (baathists) and the second one is our ally!
You need to get in touch with the troops. Its high ranking officers in the military that are the ones admitting we should have kept the Iraqi military force structure intact (this doesn't mean keeping the politically appointed officers, nor does it mean keeping units like the Republican Guard). I'm pretty sure even Rummy has conceded this. This was

Why Vote Libertarian?
For better or worse, we have a two-party system. And party trumps person. Either a Republican, George W. Bush, or a Democrat, John Kerry, is going to be elected president in November. No one else has a chance.
(From: http://rockymountainnews.com/drmn/news_columnistsNot Ralph Nader, not the Libertarian candidate, nor the Communist, nor the Green. Minor party candidates are sometimes spoilers - like Nader costing Gore the presidency in 2000 - but they don't win presidential elections. Ross Perot got 20 million popular votes in 1992, and exactly zero Electoral College votes.
/ article/0,1299,DRMN_86_3106846,00.html)My question is: Ross Perot got 20 million votes in 1992 but zero Electoral College votes. Assuming my interests are libertarian, please explain how my vote for you in a presidential election will further my libertarian agenda?

Re:Myth
I know. Don't feed the trolls. But... Your Rush Limbaugh promoted research is mistaken.
According to this August 7th article from Bloomberg (http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/business/ar ticle/0,1299,DRMN_4_3094590,00.html) many more billionaires support Bush than do Kerry - 116 to 31. The billionaires for Bush include Bill Gates (who did not give to Kerry), 280 CEOs of Russell 1000 companies (Kerry got money from 52), and most Hollywood studio executives.
Until Enron's collapse, Ken Lay - Enron's CEO - was George W. Bush's top benefactor. As to small donors vs. large see this (http://www.opensecrets.org/presidential/donordems .asp?filter=A&sortby=2).
Bernie Ebbers Worldcom's disgraced former CEO was a huge Republican fund raiser, and Trent Lott's biggest benefactor.
The Saudi's (including the Bin Laden family) did sweethart deals for George W. Bush, bailing out two of his failed companies, and making him rich while the rest of the shareholders were left holding the bag.
Bush, by far - 57,218 to 26,911, outpaces Kerry in the $2,000+ donors category, and Kerry, again by a large margin - 35% of Kerry's donors compared to 28% of Bush's, outpaces Bush in the $200 or less category.
Please do check the facts yourself, and here's a hint: you won't find them on Rush Limbaugh's web site. -
Re:Agreed to comply?I didn't know you had to 'agree' with a law before it was applicable to you.
Sure you do, in New York, at least. Only a little earlier I was reading how the well-known "email marketing mogul", Scott Richter, is "agreeing to abide by a new federal anti-spam law" as a part of a settlement with A.G. Spitzer. Nice to see he's making these naughty people promise to be good in future.

Re:some stuff
Not to mention the fact that I wouldn't think of calling Bangalore to speak with Habib about your software really qualifies as a PRO as far as MS vs OO.org.
Hm. That's Flamebait, isn't it? OK, here's some facts. All better now?
At the same time, companies such as General Electric and Microsoft are expanding their operations in India on everything from basic customer service to high-end research and development. (emphasis mine)
Doesn't GE make our ICBM guidance systems? Sweet.
Sorry, tangent. I'm in a bad mood. -
Re:iTunes may save them..."If it continues to grow (by adding on to their somewhat meager existing library) they will definitely have a new source of income online selling music."
Such as getting The Grateful Dead to add their music to the iTMS?

Re:This guy sounds like a real prize
And here's a link to a newspaper article about Mr. Richter's other felonious activities:
If he didn't have so much money from spamming he'd probably be on his way to the big house right now.

Re:Touchy, aren't they? The Rocky Mountain News had this article when when the suits hit. It provides quite a bit more detail and points out that apparently OptInRealBig, Synergy6, and Delta 7 (some of his various DBAs) already use overseas relays to circumvent spam blocks.
The Rocky Mountain News is the more conservative of Denver's two mainstream, treeware newspapers. The Denver Post probably also has coverage.

Re:Hard to compete(same AC)
Yes, I used to be on a city commission and needed to go to most of the council meetings. I've seen how local governments can get tricked by the idea that corporate welfare can actually create good jobs. I've seen it with areas being rezoned for some new condos (simiarly to your situation) and to giving preferential tax treatement for building a large do-it-yourself store (let's call it L for short).
The L's people had this presentation that a tax break for them would create hundres of new high-paying jobs. It was crap, like all these deals are.
They give an unfair competition to large corporations over small stores. The L went up, undercut local businesses because they were allowed to have larger profit margins from lower taxes, and killed local hardware stores. By the time I moved away, the L was employing about a hundred people, but four other stores each closed up taking away at least that many jobs in the process. Also, with no more competition, there was no check on L's service and prices. Nobody can tell for sure how this impacted the local landscape, since it pure guesswork, but I can tell you that L is not getting any better or cheaper. I hear they are actually having a hard time keeping a story that big open now.
Walmart just received government assistance to build a new supercenter too. It is happening across the US.
Wal-Mart Collapses U.S. Cities and Towns
Despite all this, many states and communities are using taxpayers' money to finance subsidies to Wal-Mart, to come in and rape them.
In 1999, it was reported that in Olivette, Missouri, a developer received a tax incentive of up to $38.9 million for a construction project including a Wal-Mart and a Sam's Club--more than a third of the projected total cost of the project. In 1998, it was reported that the city of Chesterfield, Missouri was supplying $25.5 million in tax incentives toward the construction of a $100 million-plus mall, anchored by a Wal-Mart. In 2001, Ohio approved $10 million in tax credits and other assistance for Wal-Mart to build two distribution centers and an eyeglass-manufacturing facility.
Proposed ordinance in San Diego takes aim at Wal-Mart Supercenters
One report, released this week by the Center on Policy Initiatives, questioned the benefits derived from public subsidies given to a 1998 retail redevelopment project in College Grove, which was anchored by a Wal-Mart. The project, the Marketplace at the Grove, received $13.4 million in public money and assistance, $9.5 million of which went to Wal-Mart, according to the study.
Denver officials are deciding whether to give Wal-Mart $10 million of our tax money so Wal-Mart can build a Supercenter at Alameda Square Shopping Center.
Just read up on the big-box closures all over the country now. Many of these cities are making the same mistakes again, gives huge incentives for people to now come into a story that Walmart has closed up after giving Wal mart incentives to build the store in the first place.
Many of these places cannot support a place like Walmart and it is no surprise when Walmart closes up after a couple of years later, after driving local stores out of business. -
Anti-NRA FUD by EZR-2000
After Columbine, they organized a rally in Denver.
This claim is such bullshit that it's almost silly. The school shooting in Columbine, Colorado happened just before the NRA's annual meeting and convention was scheduled to take place in Denver, Colorado.
The meeting, like most such conventions, was scheduled several years in advance, and would have been all but impossible to move.
The NRA couldn't cancel the annual meeting, they are required by law to hold the meeting every year. The NRA did cancel most of the other scheduled events.
Micheal Moore's film presented the opening remarks in a false light.

Re:Responsibility for your actions? Non-sense.come to think of it, none of that happens in England, France, Germany, Iran, Saudi Ariabia, Japan......
You don't seem to get the news from those countries. For instance, in Germany on April 26, 2002 a student executed 13 teachers, the principal, a cop and 2 students! (see this for example). If I recal correctly, he used a legal gun.
In Saudi Arabia, 15 school girls were forced to burn to death at a school since they weren't 'decent' (they didn't have a head scarf on) to go outside!! (see this article for details) I could go on...

CU the "Official" #1 Party School for 2003
The local papers here in Denver have all been complaining because the Princeton Review claims that the University of Colorado is the #1 party school. Here's a link to an article carried by "The Guardian" or another in the Rocky Mountain News. One thing nice about partying at a mile above sea level is there's already less oxygen so you can achieve the same buz on less total consumption for those of you on a budget.

Suprise! Same memo says IBM is the biggest threata
Suprise, we now have Microsoft giving the reason they licensed SCO Unix: They believe IBM to be the biggest threat to them.
See these articles on the same memo: here, and here
He also is afraid that there is a "...greater focus on doing more with less" in business, which could spell trouble for Microsoft.

fodder for the riaa bashers
Thought this was kinda interesting:
Untouchables leaked on the Internet before its release, and the band didn't mind at all.
"It's a different age," Davis says. "Kids are gonna get that stuff. It's not a problem for us. We don't make money off of selling albums. Our income is touring and merchandise. We make our records for people to hear. And if they're gonna hear them that way, so be it."
Even with multiplatinum sales, the record industry is so skewed that the band doesn't make money off those sales.
"The industry is a total wreck," Davis says. "It's messed up. It's wrong. But they make us famous and fulfill our dreams. So I just deal with it."
