go listen to Rush while I jerk off to a picture of Ann Coulter
I'll not have you impugning a fine Canadian rock band that way.

Re:Mechanical Licensing
The alternate version of "Working Man" was used in order to generate some cross PR for Rush and Rock Band fans. They followed putting it into the game with releasing it as a new single track via iTunes; see http://www.rush.com/low/news.php?year=2008 for details. That was pure marketing, they could have used the original one had they wanted to, but knew that picking the alternate take would add some buzz via Rush fans who want copies of everything.
Jimmy Buffet did something similar by re-recording some of his old songs for exclusive Rock Band versions. Forces all the Parrotheads to get Rock Band if they want to hear them.

Re:Snakes and Arrows
Your point is well taken. What do we do to those children, unthinkingly, and how does it affect the long term future.
I find it similar to the article/essay written by Neal Peart of Rush about their new album, Snakes and Arrows. (Rush is currently #3 on the charts - I never thought I'd see that again! Makes me happy as a big Rush fan!)
Snippet from A Prize Every Time
"...how children are usually imprinted with a particular faith, along with their other early blessings and scars. People who actively choose their faith are vanishingly few; most simply receive it, with their mother's milk, language, and customs. Thinking also of people being shaped by early abuse of one kind or another, I felt a connection with friends who had adopted rescue dogs as puppies, and given them unlimited love, care, and security. If those puppies had been "damaged" by their earlier treatment--made nervous, timid, or worse--they would always remain that way, no matter how smooth the rest of their life might be. It seemed the same for children.
To express that notion, I came up with, "The snakes and arrows a child is heir to/ Are enough to leave a thousand cuts." I thought I was only combining Hamlet's "slings and arrows" with the childhood game "Snakes and Ladders," to make something less clichéd. And indeed, when we were discussing Snakes and Arrows as a possible album title, Geddy remarked, "I like it because it sounds familiar, but isn't." -
Caution: this 'news' is coming from a guy......who calls Rush "the big hair, fake falsetto heavy metal group that made the 1980s so irrelevant musically" and casts them in the same league as Poison and Journey. I'm not even going to bother to explain the utter absurdity of such an idiotic statement.
Needless to say, someone as uninformed as this moron doesn't deserve much credibility, even when reporting on a fluff subject like 'entertainment news.' Then again, one can see why they would have him cover the red carpet instead of real news.

Re:Shades of Daniel Dennett
There are also those who espouse the view that free will must exist because of the lack of supernatural beings, aside from existing in the imaginations of humans. The fact that it is possible to hold this view and kick ass at the same time makes it all the more appealing.
For those of you who would point out that Neil Peart was reading lots of Ayn Rand at the time -- I already know this. At least he chose to be influenced by the parts that make sense.

publicity & inspiration
I'm all for it if it inspires even a small fraction of players to take up a real instrument. Just as long as they start at the beginning!
GH2 is good publicity for one of my fave bands, Rush, whose YYZ is at the "advanced" level. I can see a lot of adults going "so that's what that is", having heard it but not knowing where it's from. It's not exactly plain sailing on real instruments either. A kid who starts off fresh, trying to play that on guitar or bass, is risking sore fingers and severe disillusionment. Still, you gotta love a song with a minor-fifth riff on the Morse Code broadcast by the radio beacon at the band's home airport...

Re:Losing Focus of Google's Core Business
Much kudo points to this post.
Google's "core business" is not "to provide a search engine."
It is to "make money via ads." To do this, they use the business model of offering innovative, good, attractive, wonderful, great, etc. tools that are provided for "free," in the same way FM radio was once described as "bearing a gift beyond price, almost free."
The first of these tools was the seach engine so successful we now associate the company that provided it with the action it performs.
And as for people who think Google is not doing well to further develop its search engine specifically... Check out the features Google makes available for customization using plugins and extensions. There isn't much available at other engines that can't be found at Google as well, given the user's ability to add the feature to their browser (and their browser's ability to add features!) Seems to me the "core" search engine is continuing to develop well from the user's point of view. -

Anthem Records is a Class B label?
Humm....I am not sure that I would call the Label that carries one of the most successful and well known Canadian Rock groups of all time Class B.
Anthem records I wouldn't exactly say is a class B Label.

Here's another reason to move to Canada.
Take off, eh? -
Re:Its Interesting
Perhaps you should stop watching Fox News and listening to Rush Limbaugh all the time.
1 - I'm Canadian.
2 - That makes me a flaming liberal, right?
3 - No fox news, no Rush. (Well, we have Rush, and it's much better than your Rush).
4 - Even I can see that the US's ACLU is left-biased. I agree with most of their actions, but I find that they don't go after left-leaning politicians when they should be. -
Re:The meaning of the name:There's an Inukshuk on the cover of the Rush album "Test for Echo".

The inside of the CD booklet has other views of the stone figure and also 3 satellite dishes (or they may be radio telescopes).

t mlVery appropriate for a Canadian band, and also for the album's theme of human interaction as described in the liner notes.

Re:Okay, so
I'm sure it will come with a video output. Even the iPod photo does. Sure, BSG won't look too impressive on 2½ inch but who says Steve won't just push an iPod with a touch sensitive screen covering the whole front plate of the iPod.
Me, i'm waiting for a media player with iPod's usability that has a big capacity and can play oggs. Sure, i will have Moving Pictures on this player, but this will be an album by Rush.

Re:We are not consumers. We're customers.
Speak for yourself! I don't remember making a conscious decision to start boycotting the big labels, but it just turned out that way, my tastes have been gradually "forking" since the 80's. About the only big label music I have bought for years has been the last Rush album and live DVD, and I suspect they are only keeping their major label status through sheer bloody-minded longetivity (> 30 years).

Re:Money
>>I think the difference is that, despite what we think of the latest movies, (I believe) George Lucas really cares about the movies he's making.
Kind of reminds me of Rush in a way. Geddy Lee has said more than once that they don't care what the critics say, they just write and record songs that they want to play.
And there are plenty of Rush fanboys (myself included) who will run out and buy their records every 2 years or so, no matter how badly everyone else thinks they sound.
