3D Realms Won't Rush Duke Nukem Forever

WeAz writes "GameSpot has news that 3D Realms has no plans on rushing Duke Nukem Forever. Despite the $500,000 bounty that Take-Two Interactive was found to be offering for the game after a filing with the SEC last week, George Broussard, President of 3D Realms, has given his official response: 'We're certainly not motivated by that amount of money, after all this time, and getting the game right is what matters. I would never ship a game early (even a couple of months), for 500k.'"

Rush never had "dirty = good" mentality, which is what separated them out from the lot of punk/grunge/alt rock bands. Their music doesn't reflect that mentality, but VTs production really sounds like they're desparately trying out sound garagey, which was just dumb.

All, or some, or none of the above? JPL is most decidedly a unique institution with an identity that is, in some ways, complex. In many respects, the Laboratory enjoys the best of several worlds. JPL as a physical place is a federal facility. As a human organization, it exists as a division of Caltech, which manages the Lab for NASA under a contract renegotiated every five years. Whereas most NASA centers are run by a core staff of government employees with support from on-site contractors, JPL's management and staff are employees of Caltech. Another 10 percent of the workforce are on-site contractors who work for private companies, somewhat like other NASA centers. In addition, there is a small group of on-site government employees who act as NASA's liaison to the Lab. In formal talk, JPL is a "federally funded research and development center," putting it among a small cadre of similar institutions around the country. The closest comparable organizations might be the Lawrence Livermore or Los Alamos national laboratories, both of which the University of California manages for the Department of Energy. Although the Lab's dual identity can be challenging, it has its definite upsides. Caltech has prided itself on its stewardship of JPL over the decades, believing that the intellectual cross-fertilization with the campus has made both communities stronger.

So JPL's primary employees are employed by CalTech and CalTech staffs the center under a five year contract. That makes them seperate enough from NASA for me to recognize thier work independently of other NASA work.

We had never seen such an awesome spectacle of RPG launching, shotgun blasting, mini-gun ripping, pistol whipping, pipe-bombing, jet-pack soaring good times on a PC before.

My favourite tactic was to place a bunch of laser wall-mines in the sewer shaft on one of the LA Meltdown levels. One of my buddies would always jump down the shaft to escape certain death at the hands of a shotgun-pumping maniac charging at full-speed, only to discover a carefully-staged laser grid of high explosives waiting just for him...

Another favourite stunt was placing a laser wall-mine in a weapons locker, closing the door, and watching from a distant video camera monitor as my hapless buddy opens it, looking for a few rounds of ammo, but instead finding the heat of a full frontal explosion detonating in his face.

If I invest 100,000 dollars in something and 10 years later it becomes 150,000, that's not a very good investment (though not terrible). Of course, this is just an example I pulled out of the air, but it comes back to the point that for investors, time is money. As the time for expected return on an investment goes up, the expected return needs to go up too. At this point, DNF has taken so long that even if it's a runaway-hit at retail, it will only be a 'good' investment at best, and not a great investment.

And if it's less than a run-away hit, it will probably end up being a lousy investment. Going back to my previous example - 50% return in 10 years would not be a horribly bad investment, but now if it was 10% return in 10 years, now we can say that it's a pretty lousy investment - you'd do just as well, with far less risk, simply investing in something like treasury bonds or mutual funds (actually, most mutual funds over 10 years probably realize far better than a 10% return).

So, if I were an investor, I'd be pretty disappointed with my investment in 3D Realms, simply hoping that I can recoup my losses, and get my money off into a 'real' investment.

Someone should inform NASA of this. They admitted that this is precisely what happened. Actually, though, Lockheed Martin built the spacecraft, and it was their engineers who used English units. NASA, like everyone else in the (scientific) world, uses metric.

"No, the problem was that the conversion variables were not of sufficient accuracy, and over a period of 18 months where the computers used the conversion many thousands of times, the eventual height that the motors cut out was too high to allow the craft to survive."

If you're referring to the Mars Polar Lander, then that's also inaccurate. NASA's internal report states that the most likely cause of the loss of the Polar Lander is that its engines cut off upon deployment of its three 'legs'. Onboard sensors believed the craft had landed due to incorrect sensor readings, so the engines cut off and the craft plumeted to its doom.

However, the previous poster did make one mistake. The Mars Climate Orbiter likely did not crash into "the body it was orbiting". Due to the units conversion problem, the navigation system did not begin its burn to slow the spacecraft into a proper Mars orbit until it was far too close to the planet already. The result was that the Orbiter was travelling far too fast, its thrusters overheated during their burn and shut down, the craft plowed through the atmosphere, and continued on its way. Speculation is that it currently holds an orbit around the sun.

They simply didn't have the money to completely change all their systems, software, hardware, and equipment over to using metric; not to mention the massive blow to manpower efficiency you take when you suddenly switch units on the guys who've been doing the same thing for 20 years with one unit.

It has been exceeded many times, and it's only two years old. UT2007, which should launch this year or eairly next year, has totally new graphics assets and a major code reqrite to stay current.

It's graphics were fine for when they first started talking about it, but it took so long to release that by the time they came out they were rather dated. That could have worked perhaps had it been an awesome game, but it was so it flopped.

They claim they are using the Unreal 2.5 engine (basically the post UT2004 development engine, UT 2004 was UE2) so that means that they have redone development. In fact, if you look at their timeline they went from Q1 to Q2 to UE1 to UE1.5 to UE2 to UE2.5. Well that means there's had to be some significant updating of grpahics assets to keep pace with that. better foliage - again, mostly graphics engine, but they'll need to model some trees and stuff, and go over the outdoor levels with a foliage brush

It has a slight air of cartoonishness anyway, so it can get away with not having the absolute highest quality models and textures.

The gameplay is perfect, and has been since UT99 - though I'm excited by UT2007's Conquest mode and the potential for huge levels.

Yes, the two things off the list comprise most of the work. Just because a list has 5 items does not mean all items are equal. If my weekend todo list was "Replace burnt out light bulb, buy a new garden hose, vacuum living room, wash the car, and rebuild my car engine" you can't very well say they are all equal. The bulb replacement is a 1 minute job, rebuilding an engine is a major operation.

Code and graphics are the biggest part of a game. They require the most time and effort. Code is espically intensive hence the intrest in purchasing a working engine, which they did. That takes a lot of the effort out of it, but of course at a high monetary cost.

My point about years was that in the 5+ span, it gets difficult to use assets, be they engines or graphics at all. On a shorter span there's still possibilites. Games don't have to have the latest greatest look to sell, though it helps, and technology doesn't change all that much. However over longer times it gets to the point where you are talking major redesigns. The assumptions you made then aren't valid now. Just look at the changes in 3D cards. Shaders are now what it's all about. It wasn't until 2001 that a consumer card with any sort of real programmable shaders made an appearance. That forces you to change how you are doing thigns. It's just not "more polygons, bigger textures" it's more advanced ways of rendering scenes.

The reason I was comparing Quake 1 to FEAR is that's the timeline on which DNF operates. It's orignal development was on the Q1 engine, so if they had not upgraded, that'd be time kind of graphics we are talking. Now as I noted they have, several times. They've repurchased engines which is quite expensive, not to mention time consuming in terms of re-porting their modifications to the new engine.

No, I'm not a game dev, I never claimed to be one. I suspect you aren't either, you are just a troll trying to look smart. Sorry, but regardless of what you think it's not a trivial (or cheap) process to just update assets to modern technology. That's one reason you will see games pushed out even though they aren't ready. They've taken too long and are risking falling in to obselence before release. Publishers opt to cut their losses since not only is there more time to get things working, but also potentially time to get it up to snuff.

The point is there seems to be this misunderstanding that all the effort spent on DNF over these years is making it better. Nope, sorry, took too long on that. A significant amount of effort has now had to go to update what they had to work with new technology. This is evident from teh engine repurchases. You think they are doing that for fun? No, it's because they engine they were on was getting dated so they got a new one.

That's comming again, I might add. UE3 is nearing it's debut with UT2007, and from the look of it it's a real step up from 2004. So if they want to stay current, they'll need to get UE3, and then update the art assest to match, and rework the gameplay to deal with the new physics and so on.

Sorry, but my bet is in the unlikely event this thing ever does see release, it's a huge peice of crap.

So it's totally unheard of and impossible to make source art resources at a higher resolution and quality than is possible to render in real time and scale down for the engine implementation as needed?

Ooookay... More to the point, why would anybody waste gobs of money on overly high-quality artwork when the game is expected to be released next year? Had a more interesting story than Doom, but the game was just damn repetitive. I never finished a first playthough so a repeat playthrough wouldn't work.

Actually, the FPSes I still enjoy most are rather devoid of plot. UT2004 is probably my all time favourite. Fuck plot, good graphics, rocking tunes, and solid gameplay. That's all I need. The orignal Doom, in it's jDoom incarnation I also still enjoy playing.

Now if you talk more hybrid FPSes, then yes plot plays a role. Deus Ex is just a wonderful game, I replay that at least once a year. It's plot is an essential part of that. However, I can't really call it an FPS. It's just not a shooter at heart. You CAN shoot things, but it's more of a first-person RPG than a FPS.

It just seems to me when the focus becomes shooting, plot has to take a backseat to a large amount. Hard to have good plot going on when enemies are comming at your franticly.

That doesn't mean it's worthless, Quake 4 was made better (to the extent it was any good) by the plot that tied it together, but really it wasn't a wonderful plot. Marines invade aliens, aliens fight back, marines win. The minor developments and twists keep it mroe interesting, but the shooting kinda spaces them out. Also only so much plot interactivity when your choice is limited to which kind of ammo you want to embed in their skull. You have to have something along the line of Deus Ex where there are other choices for it to work.

So that's my point, based on the Duke game I did play, I'm guessing it's not going to have an epic driving plot, and that's ok. I'm just saying it's not a major source of development time.

The release date of this game is "When it's done". Anything else, and we mean anything else is someone's speculation. There is no date. We don't know any date. If you have a friend who claims they have "inside info", or there's some game news site, or some computer store at the mall who claims they know - they do not. They are making it up. There is no date. Period.

And yes, we know the game has taken a long time. There's no possible joke you could make about the game's development time that we haven't already heard. :)"

So basically a lot of smiley faces and some suppressed irritability. I think we should all send them our best joke and test their theory that they've heard it all already.

It's quite clear they intended to release it earlier but just couldn't get their shit together. A real long-term project isn't announced like that. For an exmaple of a real long term one, look at Epic's Unreal Engine 4. UE3 isn't out yet, it's slated for games late this year at the earliest, however UE4 is in the works... But their eairly stages. Epic has said only that they are working on it, but at this point it's just their lead developer laying some groundwork. They expect UE3 and 3.5 to last till 2009 or so.

I have a feeling DNF is a big pile of crap. They clearly lack direction on it. It does not take 10 years to get a shooter out. It shouldn't take 10 years to get ANY game out. As I noted, everything else aside, you end up doing a lot of rework on a timescale that long. Even if you planned for 10 years in the future, you couldn't predict all the new technologies. Hell, 10 years ago 3D cards had only been on the market for a little while(the Voodoo2 was not yet out). Though there was a ton of interest and good sales, it was way too eairly to count on that technology, it could have easily died. At that time one pretty much had to have software rendering to succede (as Quake did). Also what a 3D card would become was totally unpredicatble. Many thought they'd die, many thought they'd not really evolve (after all processors hadn't, they'd just gotten faster), many thought they'd turn in to raytracers since that gave the best images. If this is the case it could take a very very long time and who knows it might be the best thing that ever happened to the gaming industry. Up to now most games have been similar with very weak plots and often poor gameplay. Games don't usually stay interesting because of the limited amount of levels and the insufficient level of game detail. A perfect example would be Doom 3. The first levels of Doom 3 have an extraordinary amount of detail compared to the later levels, you can really tell they decided to accelerate development, the result, I didn't play Doom 3 more then 2 months. Now imagine for a second that IdSoftware had kept on making more and better levels with more details for 10 years in a row! I hope thats what Duke Nukem Forever will be! If anything the plot will be amazing which is what really makes or breaks a game. Rushing now would be the worst thing they could do.
