Most likely due to Samsung Knox.

Re:My Wish
While all the news and discussion on Slashdot revolves around Apple, there actually IS a fork of Android for DoD and business.
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/mobile/solution/security/samsung-knox
I expect most of the security improvements will also be available for standard Android before too long.

Re:So....
Samsung is already working on a solution to that. Basically, instead of your employer having full run of the phone, all the employer stuff is put into a sandboxed instance of the OS. Your personal phone runs into another sandboxed instance. Like having two virtual machines running simultaneously, you can flip between the two. Your employer has full control over one, and you have full control over the other.
I'm a little skeptical of how well it'll work in practice (backups will probably be problematic). But if they can pull it off, it will eliminate the need to carry two phones just because your workplace wants full access and control. -
Re:bets?
Really?
I'm looking all I see is various versions of Windows on the left-hand check column. Dells website is notoriously stupid to navigate and they're also famous for "sort of" offering Linux systems, either unlisted, buried, and with outright warnings that you're not getting Windows.
Sounds like smoke blowing to me.
I've seen a Samsung Chromebook, but that does not appear to an option across the board like you're inferring. Still going to have to pay the tax.

Re:Yeah, but when will they make a larger iPhone?
Fortunately there is a phone being produced that meets your needs

it can't be a "factual error"

Re:Android?
Point is Android is still mentioned but they don't mention Linux at all. Just like Google etc say ChromeOS without saying Linux. All for perhaps very similar reasons people say Android instead of Linux.
Interestingly for Samsung's Singapore and UK pages there's even a "bada" OS choice:

Re:New tags
Do you even understand how power distribution works? Do you think that there is a separate grid with separate dedicated conductors for green power? Do you think that a supermarket doesn't have a choice because of the physical connection to the grid? I can switch my house to renewable by telling my utility that I want to do that. They'll adjust their power purchases accordingly and adjust my bill appropriately. If I want, I can buy carbon offsets and pay for the build out of renewable generation plants to account for the carbon produced by my car, or the trucks that deliver my food.
What is the mix at Samsung, HTC, Sony, Dell, HP?
EE here, so I do understand a bit but I also understand Third World practices and we're talking about China. I seriously doubt that they can choose what kind of source they're supplied from (feel free to correct me). Still they could buy carbon credits as you mention (possibly through Foxconn) and brag about it but they just leave China out of their press release. A quick search failed to find anything about Apple involving itself in the chinese carbon market (again, please tell me if you know better than I).
I also suspect that other vendors have a similar environmental impact, but if they actually make their stuff their green statements should be closer to the truth.

Re:Let's shoot for desktop replacement, Samsung
> I mean a standard mini-usb dock with VGA, HDMI, DVI output and a few USB ports for a keyboard and rat.
Why a standard? All the outputs are standard, the dock gets resold with your phone when you buy a new one (or you buy a compatible phone).

Re:What if...
What if phones came in a range of shapes and sizes so you could choose the size that suited you.
It would be awesome, but they don't. Small screen size is usually accompanied by a slow processor, tiny amount of RAM and sub-standard specs. The first one you link to comes with Android 2.2 FFS. So it would be great if we could by the same overall phone in different form factors, but that's not yet the reality we live in.

What if...
What if phones came in a range of shapes and sizes so you could choose the size that suited you.
If only we lived in such a world...
NB: Samsung links for illustrative purposes only - different sized phones are available from other manufacturers - I believe Apple will sell you a rather fine phone if you believe that there is Only One True Phone Size. Odd, because Apple offer every other product line they do in a range of form factors...
Seriously folks - the right size of phone depends on your personal priorities. If you're a heavy voice/txt user then maybe a smaller, thumb-friendly phone is for you. If you only send the occasional voice call or txt, but want web, email, navigation, games in your pocket then phablets are more attractive. The Galaxy Note II is about the minimum size to be useful with a stylus and/or split screen multitasking - but maybe you don't want to use those (Samsung's split-screen multitasking is impressive, but I admit that the only reason I ever use it is to show people how impressive it is...)

How, exactly, is it so difficult to find Windows 7
First off, FUCK BUYING OFF THE SHELF SYSTEMS! All these brick and mortars are going to do is sell you a craptastic system at an inflated price. And of COURSE all they'll sell you is Windows 8.
Sager You can still order their products with Win7. The configuration app gives you the option.
MSI MSI laptops still come with Win7. There's a push for Win8, but they come with Win7 by default.
Acer still sells Win7 laptops (just no way on the web to filter for them, so I can't provide a definitive link).
That should be enough to get you started.

My brother is an avid outdoorsman, he's very happy with his ruggedised Samsung phone. I believe it's this one, or a very similar model. It shrugs off all kinds of abuse, and he's put it through its paces

Re:Do yourself a favor
They still aren't waterproof. And I have a 300 watt, 120vlt aquarium heater that argues strongly against the idea that it's not possible to make a cellphone waterproof.
Almost. I have just acquired a Samsung Galaxy Xcover, also known as 'Extreme', which can withstand 1 meter for 30 mins. It has a metal case and Gorilla glass. It doesn't have the latest bells and whistles but I reckon it's a reasonably rugged basic smartphone.

Re:Let the bashing begin!
Surface Pro is the best tablet that can run x86 applications.
I don't need a tablet that can run x86 apps. Users don't give a flying shit about "x86" they just give a shit about having good apps to run. iOS and Android already offer that in spades. And the Samsung Galaxy Note supports the stylus in ALL apps, not just specially written ones.
Show me another machine that is as thin, light, and powerful with a stylus. You can't.
Apparently, you're not too hip on the tablet scene: http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxynote/note_10.1/index.html?type=find
It's thinner, lighter, cheaper, has longer battery life, 3G, and is designed for use with a stylus, etc.
You might say a tablet is defined by being thin and light and having all day battery life, but that's different from what I want in a tablet. I want a stylus for writing. Surface Pro has this, 90% of tablets today don't.
I think I already covered this argument.
I want ports for USB drives, portable harddrives, video out. Surface Pro has this, 90% of tablets today don't.
USB drives and hard drives? What fucking century do you live in?? And pretty much everyone has a video out capability now (not that I've seen anyone ever use that feature before other than fucking around).
want an SD card slot for expansion and swapping cards. Surface Pro has this, 90% of tablets today don't.
lol, lots of tablets have SD card slots dude. Have you ever googled an android tablet before?
The Surface pro is a little thicker and heavier than iPad (.5 lbs and
.5") but the tradeoff is more power with an i5 and compatibility with millions of applications and devices. So great for you if your iPad or Android tablet is thinner and lighter and lasts all day. I don't care because they are as useless as rocks for my needs, and I'll gladly pay $899 for a tablet that does what I want. And what are your needs? You mention all these features you want that the Surface Pro just happens to have but seriously, what is your job or hobby that requires these features? I'm having trouble envisioning it. I'm willing to say that it's possible that there's a small group of people the Surface Pro would be a good match for but I think it's a very, very small group. Congrats to you if you're one of them.
And FYI, that $899 does not include a keyboard. Feel free to tack on another $130.
Honestly, based on everything you've said, I find it hard to imagine how the the average consumer would choose a Surface Pro over a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. Keep in mind, I'm not any kind of Samsung fanboy.

Re:You can decide to .....
Get a Laser printer - they can be had for not much more than a cheap inkjet these days - and color ones can be had for the price of a full set of color inks these days!Ink jets are a waste of money and a false economy.
I recently bought a samsung laser printer .

had it nearly 2 years and barely made a dent in the toners. I wont go back to ink jets again as they always dry up
before having had chance to print more than a few things out.If i ever need to print photo's ill get them done online.

Re:What's the big deal? The term you're looking for is the "Sleekbook". Well, HP came up with that name, but it's basically an AMD based Ultrabook. HP are not the only ones having them, but you can start with the HP ENVY Sleekbook 6-1010us. A quick search also gave me Samsung Series 5 NP535 (NP535U3C).
Just a few Google taking me next to no time. Wasn't all that difficult, now was it? I'm sure now you got a lead, you can continue your own research.
Personally, I recently saw an Acer "Netbook" on sale with a Celeron 867/4GB RAM for 495€ Sure, it's Intel, but it's not an Ultrabook (misses the Core iN CPU), but kicks the crap out of anything that passes as an Atom-based Netbook. Heck, i could see myself do most of my work on it, if it had better resolution, but the resolution it offers is the "standard" in Ultrabooks too. I didn't buy it, because I couldn't justify a 3rd laptop...

Re:HOBBIT IN 48 FPS - YECHH!
I believe some people must not notice it. I haven't watched a 48fps movie, but I have a tv with the motion plus motion plus
It cause the "Soap Opera Effect," which my girlfriend doesn't notice, but I do and it bugs the hell out of me. Basically the picture just doesn't look "right". It looks cheap and crappy like a soap opera. For me, the audio and acting even seem to be affected - it sounds more hollow and the acting seems to be more stiff - I'm guessing this effect is some kind of illusion caused by my brain or something.
I suppose its possible that I could get used to this, and switching the motion plus off would cause the same reaction, but I haven't tried it. Its also possible that content shot in 48fps looks better than content that wasn't and has this motion plus treatment added.
I am far from being an audiophile or videophile or any kind of phile. I can't describe it objectively. I don't know the technical terms to describe its suckiness. I just know that it is really disturbing to watch. Some people get sick when watching video games, or those video rides (star tours, harry potter, etc.) Maybe its a similar kind of thing.
Have you watched the 48fps Hobbit? If you didn't notice anything off about it, good for you. Do you have one of these HDTV's with the motion plus stuff? Don't notice? Cool. But the googles are full of people who really can't stand it.

Re:Inevitable
According to Samsung Electronics, two-thirds of their $6 billion in profits last quarter came from their smartphones.
This is about the same percentage for Apple, the iPhone, and their $8 billion in profits last quarter.
Is this so? "More than two-thirds of the earnings were generated by the telecommunications business" - so is this their (smart) phones, or is this their Samsung Telecommunication Systems Business division, "one of the world’s leader in 4G wireless technology and network infrastructure.
It provides cutting-edge LTE solutions to more than 30 mobile network operators and Mobile WiMAX solutions to about 60 operators worldwide.* Samsung partners with leading 4G operators around the globe, including Sprint and Clearwire in the U.S., UQ Communications in Japan, YTL Communications in Malaysia and Mobily in Saudi Arabia."

Re:A tiny example of trickle down economics in act
Whatever your feelings are about Intel's products, this product is cheaper than a similar product 1 year or 2 years ago, it's better, it's faster, it's less power hungry, it has more capacity.
Clearly the investment into the original batch of SSDs paid off and Intel was able to use the profits it made on them to invest into better technology. That is economics (as I said, some call it 'trickle down' economics), but really all real economics is 'trickle down' economics. The more profitable a company becomes, the more it can invest into its products and the lower the prices will be eventually, because more profits brings in more competition.

Re:My nipples just got hard
I'm holding out for the Asus Taichi 31, because I like the 13.3" screen. Second choice would have to be the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro.
I really would like some data on the styli though. My Thinkpad tablet (Wacom) has degraded resolution near the edges, and with such narrow TV-screens, that leaves about 4" in the middle (portrait mode) that is writable. Do the new ones have this problem? What about the S-Pen and N-Trig styli?

Re:Does it have a pressure sensitive, 200+dpi styl

Re:I don't get it
So it's slightly cheaper than an older iPad, but gets worse battery life. It has a fraction of the software of an iPad, and isn't as easy to whip out and use since you have to fold out the keyboard. It's less features than an netbook (which you could restrict down to be malware free) but at the same cost.
I'm just not sure about the value on these things.
iPad2: $399 ($529 with 3G). 9.2" 1024x768 screen. No keyboard
Samsung Chromebook: $249 ($329 with 3G) 11.6" 1366x768 screen, keyboard, touchpad, USB 3.0/2.0 ports, SD Card slot
I'm not sure I'd say that $150 - $200 is "slightly cheaper".

Re:brilliant marketing guy
So what does the iPhone have to do with this? Well, somebody had to take a risk with these pricey multi-touch devices.
Actually, when it came to "taking the risk," Both Microsoft and Mitsubishi beat Apple to the punch by about half a decade, although Apple was the first companies to put the technology to use in a phone, which is a milestone worth recognition.
Of course, Apple's patently false claims to have invented multitouch only serve to further legitimize my statement that Jobs was a bad inventor, but a good marketer.Prior to iPhone, I mostly recall crappy stylus-style touchscreens.
"Crappy" is a matter of opinion. I used to have a Thinkpad "Tablet Edition" that used a stylus, and for certain tasks, like writing notes or drawing, the stylus was and still is a far better interface than the tip of one's finger. I was pretty sad to see that fall to the wayside, especially in the tablet market, but it appears the stylus is poised to make a comeback in that particular venue, much to the joy of folks like myself.

Re:And most of the real big changes aren't predict
The Internet is a great, recent, example. Nobody predicted it, not even in Sci-Fi. The idea of a truly global, integrated, universal network was just not something people thought of. Hell even when it was first developed as ARPAnet it was just envisioned for government and research, they didn't say "We are going to connect all the computers in the world!" Their goals were much smaller, it just ended up evolving in to that.
Incremental changes we can sometimes predict. The real revolutionary ones we almost never can.

Re:Going for the S3
Uh no, only the Apple Fanboys who can't live without the latest from Apple stick with it. I've had friends who actually prefer Android, as do I. I'm sorry, the business model, their public attitude towards American Workers, the lock in and two of the carriers, AT&T and Verizon, is why I'll stay the hell away from Apple for a long damn time. Not to start a flame war, but it's pretty bad when I see Samsung investing double what Apple does in the US just to make the chips that drive the latest fanboy gadgets.
Apple may be creative but they certainly don't have my vote as a good corporate citizen in the US and all that speed from the new iPhone 5 is built by Samsung in Texas.

Re:In the 3-5" Wi-Fi tablet market
Which Android device corresponds to the iPod touch again? If none, then yes, Apple is moving that many iDevices.
So, let me see if I'm following your logic here. You're saying if there is no Android device that correspands to the iPod Touch (for the sake of argument, there is) then that mere fact alone means Apple is moving more iDevices than Android devices. Really? Really??
