Another web page outNext page in the series: http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/HL0307/S0007
8 .htmThis has an interview with one of the poor blokes responsible for setting up the machines, and downloading untested patches to them so they could be shipped out.
He describes the typical "there's a deadline" software nightmare, of placing untested patches on untested patches, and of machines that were broken in a different way on every reboot.
Embarrassing enough if you're a dot-com. Horrifying when you're running an election.

Sorry, the explanation does work
The auditor is expected to rely on the reports and audits provided by the application. The software, Access databases, and vendor-provided machines with the software on them are not supposed to be looked at directly, and have been password protected to prevent such "tampering".
Complaints that these restrictions give an insane amount of control to the vendors have so far fallen on deaf ears. Speculations that said ears have been stuffed with cotton from appropriately delivered bribes lack proof (though not circumstantial evidence), and have therefore not been widely reported.
Before dismissing this story I suggest looking into the background, some of which is on http://www.blackboxvoting.com, and doing research including downloading the online copy of the ftp site and appropriate tools as described in the "boring" link above. (Scroll for the words, "complete online copy".) -

conventional ICBM
I have to say I think the idea of intercontinental ballistic missiles loaded with a conventional warhead makes more sense. You could put a couple of those anywhere in the world with only 30 minutes notice.

French Russian SCO Summit!!!
Putin has been involved in a SCO Summit in Russia and France!! See the article. You have to search, but buried down in the third question to Putin, you see these words:
after the SCO summit and the series of major international meetings in St. Petersburg and Evian
What do you want to bet that the German court's attempt to shut down the SCO website was just a smokescreen to hide the fact that they are involved as well.
I bet you that Evian water is designed to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids!!! -

Proof is in the Pudding
The proof of how deadly dangerous these fully electronic voting systems are in the pudding. Check this story from Scoop, about Diebold electronic chicanery in the Georgia elections.
We need to Fight to prevent any voting system that does not generate physical evidence. And we need to Fight to ensure that any interested voter has the ability to assist with or audit the counting and recounts.
That's if we want to live in a democracy. And the only reason we've lost what we have is so many people are too trusting and too lazy to act. -
Re:That is the sound of inevitability....
I thought the crash came because people realized that the stocks they were holding were useless. So are you saying that Enron was honest and those dot coms were making real profits and some how Bush gaining Gore magically made them disappear
No, the tech stock collapse started in mid-2000, when people realized that the level of tech investment the Clinton-Gore administration had been systaining was likely going to be refocused away from IT. The Enron collapse came about a year later.
if Gore had won, there's no way he couldn've kept the bubble from bursting
At the risk of arguing over the unknowable, I respectfully disagree. The level of investment in tech stocks was the cause of their high prices, and plenty had gone bankrupt or were bought before 2000, with no effect on the sustained levels of investment. Although, you are right about Enron. There is nothing anyone could have done to save Enron. Those Texan energy firms are shady.

Re:In related news...US Marines turn fire on civilians at the bridge of death
It's hard to blame them. Iraqi units have forced civilians to run in front of their advancing allied units in attacks against allied troops. They have faked surrenders and then ambushed troops who came to accept the surrender. Hospitals and schools are being used to store military equipment. Iraqi soldiers have abandoned their uniforms and are fighting in civilian clothing. American and British soldiers are risking their own lives to protect Iraqi civilians despite the best efforts of Iraqi soldiers and militia fighters (and anti-America media) to pin civilian deaths as the fault of coalition forces.
Iraqi Combatants Dressed as Civilians
"We were engaged from the city by
people dressed up in civilian clothes with AK-47s
... that's when I was shot in the hand," the 21-year-old corporal explained.
Menard pointed out that local Iraqi civilians had at first seemed happy to see the Marines. That changed, he noted, when the civilians "turned on us and started firing on us."
And, some of the enemy's fire came from a nearby hospital, the Marine remarked.
...
The Army sergeant pointed out that neither he nor his fellow troops want to kill civilians or innocent people in Iraq. However, Horgan noted, the circumstance of Iraqi fighters dressing up as civilians is "going to make it really difficult for us to discern who is 'good' or 'bad.' That's a shame."Iraqi Civilians Blow up U.S. Troops in Suicide Attacks
Four U.S. soldiers were blown up by a suicide bomber posing as a taxi driver Saturday.
...
Iraqi soldiers have disguised themselves as civilians. They have faked surrendering to get the jump on coalition troops. They have used civilians as human shields.
And now they are sending out suicide bombers. An Iraqi official warned Saturday that suicide attacks would be "routine military policy."In spite of the enemies' treacherous tactics...
Two U.S. Soldiers Survive Week in Desert... and nearly starve after giving away most of their food to needy Iraqis.
The soldiers said they were stranded when their truck's clutch failed on the way to tow an officer's Humvee that had broken down as the division was traveling toward Baghdad. They said a staff sergeant had ordered them to wait, and said they would be picked up.
No one did. So the two dug trenches to defend their position, and took turns on watch.
They gave most of their food to hungry Iraqi civilians, and watched nervously as white vehicles - a trademark of Saddam Hussein's paramilitary Fedayeen - passed by. Koppi had become a father 10 days before he was deployed, and he wrote poems to his wife.
"It has been weeks since we have spoken, I know her heart is close to broken," went one couplet. You know the famous picture of a U.S. Army medic carrying an Iraqi boy?
The child in his photo was hit in the leg by shrapnel after
he and his family were used as a human shields by Iraqi irregulars.
...
Mr. Zinn said the story began early on Tuesday morning, after the Third Squadron of the Seventh Cavalry spent a night of non-stop ambushes as it worked its way north along the Euphrates River towards Baghdad.
"We'd spent about 24 hours being ambushed left and right.... I was sleeping in the back of -

How about the chemical weapons he "did not have" that they are order to use.
How about the missels he "did not have" that were used the first day of the war?

Re:Michael Moore's Letter to Governor Bush
They tried diplomatic pressure and other means with America alongside. It didn't work.
But it did work, in the end there were results and that's why a lot of countries wanted the weapons inspectors to go on with their work. If there is proof, that the Iraq has a significant number of B- or C-weapons the USA never presented it. In the end the Iraq was complying (though grudgingly) with the demands layed down by the UN. In the meantime north Korea more or less publicly announced their intention to produce nuclear bombs, so shouldn't Bush et al. strike at north Korea before going for the Iraq?
So when Bush couldn't convince the world that Iraq was threatening the world with weapons of mass destruction he switched rhetorics and talked about having to free the Iraq of that evil dictator Saddam. Now Saddam Hussein is an evil dictator, but that's none of the USAs business, as it hasn't been for the past 20 years (like when the USA even supported the current Iraqi regime). The last demand that Saddam now leave the country within 48 hours is not an ultimatum, it's a joke. Everyone can imagine that that'd be suicide for Saddam.
This war isn't about terrorism either, it's easier to construct a link from Osama bin Laden to Bush than to Saddam Hussein, and war isn't a means to get at terrorists who're probably not even in the attacked country. As a result of the war even more terrorist attacks are expected in the US and the threat level is raised.
So the war isn't about chemical weapons or terrorists, neither is it an idealistic mission to free the Iraq people from their evil dictator (or do the USA now intend to attack any country where the government isn't to their liking?). Many people (even inside the US) see it that way and that's how they arrive at the conclusion that the war isn't justified but is just about oil and distracting the american people from their problems at home.
This war is also a very bad precedent, as it shows that the USAs government doesn't care what the UN have to say on the issue, they do what they damn well please anyway. So now whenever any country wants to start a war all they need are some unsupportable and made up reasons and then they can go ahead? Or is that only right for the USA but noone else?
Also the arrogant way the USA dealt with the UN and other nations (and also opposition at home) has weakened the UN and hurt diplomatic relationships worldwide. More and more the USA is percieved -
Re:Whats good for the goose...
There are laws against such activities. But as long as a bunch of corrupt, self-serving, unconstitutional cowards are in charge, no real action against white-collar crimes will ever be taken.
Or, to put it differently: As long as white-collar criminals are in charge, white-collar crimes will be tolerated.
What I don't understand is why ordinary people tolerate and defend Bush's actions. After all, it is you and I who pay the bill at the end of the day. -
An Example of Closed SourceI would recommend checking out this story, in which Senator Hagel Admits owning the Voting Machine Company that runs the elections in his state, Nebraska.
Completely coincidentally, Nebraska has a new law that prohibits election workers from looking at the paper ballots, even in a recount. The only machines permitted to count votes in Nebraska are ES&S.
And completely coincidentally, Senator Hagel has won recent elections by surprising margins. See also this capitol hill newspaper report
there's more to this, but I can't find the links yet.

Gollum model
The Embassy cinema in Wellington, New Zealand, was the location of the Australasian premiere last night. In the red carpet thing beforehand, they unveiled a model of Gollum attached to the cinema (last year they had a cave troll).
I was there, with my trusty digital camera, and here's a photo of it. The overhead wires ruin my shot a bit, but there's a better picture here. -
Sure, for now..
You are absolutely correct. However, politicians may steal as much as they can, but it's the people that still elect them. Only when the masses wake up will things change. And unfortunately, throughout history, this has rarely happened until after the point of no return.
What you list above is an admirable way to protect the 'homeland' but it still misses the main problem. Check out Usama's letter on what his reasoning is. We were founded on the premise of religious tolerance. However, there are elements linked to the government through the current administration that are now just as bad as Usama himself. Extremist conservtives drunk with intolerance of any religion other than Christianity and set on enforcing their view of morality on the rest of the world - just like Usama. Only difference is that they have the worlds largest military and corporations to back it up.
When and if we correct this problem, will there be no or little reason to monitor our borders and ports - except maybe to keep others away from prosperity (which sounds odd if you think about it). But for now, I fear you're correct and we are already starting to see ridiculous examples of democracy gone awry. -
Re:voting!is that the reason that "republicans" are generally against efforts to improve voter participation, such as the motor-voter bill?
The RNC has spent a record amount of money since 2000 on increasing voter participation. That is the main reason they won in the midterm.
but, numbers-wise the winning candidates generally won with small majorities, so perhaps this supports the idea that a true democracy will be nearly evenly split.
Not true. America technically is a 52% Republican 48% Democrat country now. If libertarians had voted for Republicans, the Senate gains for the Republicans would have been a complete blowout.
what the idea likely does not intend is that the parties will basically be spouting the exact same ideas
A common misconception. The two parties do not share the exact same ideas. Where are the pro-life Democrats and the anti-gun Republicans? There are tons of examples of where Republicans and Democrats differ.

Re:Evidence?
The only people who would consider this a troll are Americans who are so brainwashed and so closed-minded that they can't see the truth. I am an American, but if I had the ability to leave this cesspool, I would. Here are the problems I see:
1. Americans are overweight (so the poster is correct in saying we're fat) with many of them being dangerously obese. I could stand to lose 10-15 pounds myself.
2. Americans have become locked into an obessive and unhealthy relationship with money and property due to the capitalist system. In America, the only value a person has is the amount of "stuff" that they own. This is immoral.
3. Americans are woefully out of touch with regards to the rest of the world due to the lack of true news reporting and cultural education in general. See this link for a great rundown of American failings.
4. Due to the propaganda that passes for news in this country, Americans (incorrectly) think that the rest of the world is out to get them. It isn't true folks. Wake up and join the rest of the world.
5. Americans are too eager to see an enemy around every corner. Even if it is unwarranted. This is evidence of how scared most of our population is. The very fact that so many fools believe they need to own a gun, further illustrates the point.
In general, Americans need to grow up and become aware of what is really going on in the rest of the world. America is NOT the greatest nation on the planet. The American century is over. Accept it.
While capitalism might be the best thing going right now... that doesn't imply that it will always be the best thing. I believe it's nearing the end of it's usefulness because it only encourages greed, ruthless competition and fear. It's time for a change. Keep in mind, the best way to travel used to be a horse drawn coach at one time, I'd challenge anyone here to say that it still is.
The capitalist system is the root source of most of America's problems in and out of the nation. Why did the "terrorists" hit the Twin Towers? Because WE are interfering with their culture solely to make a profit. Why did the "dot.com" bubble burst? Because a bunch of greedy bastards thought that they deserved six figure salaries for having no business model other than "It's really cool and it'll use the internet". Why do we have such a huge disparity between the rich and the poor? Because the rich have the money to pay people to make them richer. The poor actually have to work.
So, as much as I would love to defend this country, I find myself wanting to walk away, quietly and ashamed, from all the things it currently stands for. Until this country and it's populace decide to pay attention to the real world instead of the one they see through the filter of capitalism, we are doomed to be mocked and attacked. America is being controlled by the wrong people: lawyers and business interests. The only people those two groups benefit are themselves. They just throw the illusion of wealth at people like you and me.
I make $45,000 a year working as a network admin/programmer in the non-profit (major metropolitan public library) sector because I believe in doing something for my fellow man. I could have worked in the private sector and made a lot more money, but who would that be helping? It wouldn't help those who really matter (the children in the inner city, the unemployed and underpriveledged). That is how I can view my country this way. The peopple who have been deluded into thinking that they are wealthy and important because they own stuff, are morally bankrupt.

Maybe Progressive's CEO will get arrested *again*
I remember the hoopla last America's Cup when the CEO of Progressive Insurance, Peter Lewis, got caught with pot and hash coming into NZ. A wonderful example of how the rich get treated differently than regular schmooes, he was able to buy his way out with a clean record and reporting his name was censored in NZ by the judge at the time.
Oh those rich with nothing better to do!

How about April 12th 2002?
The US already attempted a "regime change" in Venezuela this year. This "regime change" was an effort to install a leader that would privatize Venezuela's oil industry. Privatization would allow foreign investors to manipulate the price of oil. Venezuela is an OPEC country so this would have a world-wide effect (imagine Enron on a global scale). If I remember correctly Venezuela broke the oil embargo in the 70's.
To bring us back on topic... The US government does a lot of awful things like this that the people of the US would not approve of. There is no reason a democratic government should be overthrowing other governments. This war, like the war on drugs, is a racket and a sham.
There are a lot of unanswered questions about 9/11. All we can do is continue to search for answers to the questions of who stood down that day and who is making money off this. -
And who owns that company now...Union Pacific now owns Southern Pacific. So know that the company who brought us that fucked up decision has changed hands, and still exists. And that Missouri Pacific bought Union Pacific, but changed the name of Mo Pac to Union Pacific. So there's a lot of "hide the chicken" going on...

Re:personnel-sized armored fighting units would
I wouldn't be so quick to jump on the special forces bandwagon (which goes by more buzzwords than anything.) The enemies we've fought using mostly special forces have not, with the notable exception of Somalia which turned out as a disaster, really fought back. Special forces are great for routing an allready demoralised enemy - Alexander the great knew that. Now, in a world where, for political reasons, we never fight anyone who's going to fight back, yeah, special forces are the way to go, because you can't even use anybody else.
The real interesting thing about these exoskeletons is not the heavy ordinance they let a soldier carry - the chinese make an automatic grenade launcher that is man-portable, for christ's sake (you'd have to be nuts to try firing it without pinning it to the ground, though.) If you're really concerned about improving the firepower of your man on the ground, there are a lot cheaper ways to do it - stinger missiles, RPGLs - than to put him inside a killer robot, is my point.
Also, I'm not really impressed with how tough giant robots are supposed to make people. If you recall, back in 'nam the soldiers rode OUTSIDE their APCs for safety. Of course, the vietnamese fought back. If all your enemy is gonna do is pop off a few light rounds at you while you stomp around, you're better off in Voltron.
The issue is portage of supplies. The sheer weight of a soldier's gear (food, water, ropes, kits, knives and guns, and so on) make the exoskeleton really attractive for that purpose. It's also a convenient platform to integrate all of these cool tactical and communications gadgets we want our soldiers to cart around, which have been making the problem of portage even worse. This does mean we could fit every man with sidewinder missiles and a tac nuke, but delta force paratroopers can allready reduce a hundred men each to hamburger, I just don't see the percentages. -
