I'm glad someone mentioned MST3K. Everyone who's ever lurked in creative newsgroups knows that 90% of fanfics are crap, right? A lot of people give some of the worst ones the Mystery Science Theatre treatment, known as MSTings. If you're into anime, give SVAM a try. A lot of the stuff they do is screamingly funny. They're under reconstruction right now, but it's worth seeing when it's back up. -
Re:Evangelion - Bleh.
I have watched every single episode, subtitled of course, and both movies. And it was easy to get the overall story, since it only advanced about a half centimeter every episode, and there might have as well have been blinking words on the screen saying "overall story arc now advancing" when it did.
I recommend you visit Evangelion Thumbnail Theatre to see a listless, overhyped series made fun of. :)
Of course, your mileage may vary. If you enjoyed it, I certainly don't wish to rain on your parade. But I enjoyed Patlabor about ten billion times more.

A bright moon. Whoop-dee-doo.
"To the average person, it's just going to be another full moon," said Bob Bonadurer, director of the Minneapolis Planetarium.
That is from an excellent debunking and explanation of this e-mail, which can be found here, at the Urban Legends Reference Pages, an excellent source of well-researched debunking. (I was a couple of days shy of being the first one to debunk the violent kangaroo myth.)
Apparently, the last time the moon was at perigee during the full moon was...last month. It just wasn't the solstice.
Like I said, whoop. Dee. Doo. (I'll have to at least take a look anyway...I actually set my alarm to get up in the middle of the night to watch the Leonid meteor shower, which turned out to be a total bust.)

Re:MicroSoft Doesn't need WINCE.The Palm was never intended to be a replacement for a desktop computer. It's main purpose is to be an electonic diary you carry with you to synchronise with your Lotus Organizer or Claris Organizer (now called Palm Desktop), and Quicken, etc.
Admittedly, $AU800 for a Palm V is a little expensive, but I was sold on it because of a few little utilities I found on PalmGear:
- Titrax (hour tallying program)
- PocketMoney (keep track of my spending habits)
- Strip (secure storage of my passwords)
- Date Mate (make me remember birthdays!)
- DiddleBug (paint package)
- Nag Screen (really useful utility!)
The Palm is supposed to be a data logger, with the processing being done on the desktop. There's no competition between Palm and Windows (besides, I use a Mac on my desktop).
I looked at WinCE once and the interface was so familiar, I was waiting for the BSOD (or h ere). Microsoft's biggest mistake with WinCE was underestimating the emotional decision that a user makes based on previous experience with products that have the same interface (ie: Windows 95/98/NT).
That, and the fact that a Palm III can run for weeks on one set of AAA batteries. A WinCE machine runs for maybe 6 hours. However, I got the Palm V with the rechargable Lithium-Ion battery (more dollars than sense). Besides, it looks sexy :P. Next on the list is a Sony Vaio (just like Steff's) -

On moderation
Hello. This, like many other comments here, is meta-discussion, and thus not really on topic. I wish there was a better place for it, but I cannot think of any. Pardon.
I don't find the several derogatory messages appearing here a disastrous problem. Practically all of them have been moderated down, and I must commend the moderators for such prompt action. Everyone is aware, hopefully, that at threshold -1 you do get to see utter crap. This time there is more of it, mostly because of a few persistent flamebaiters. However, as always, you get what you ask for, if you don't want to see the worst of the worst, keep your threshold higher. The moderation system works, in my opinion, remarkably well in general.
However, please, people, do not feed the flames by replying to completely obvious trolls. Trust the moderators to do their job. Flaming flamers is just a waste of mutual resources, most notably reading time.
I suspect that starting IP banning would not be worthwhile. It would open yet another can of worms about censorship, and IP banning is not a foolproof protection against misbehaving individuals in any case. Like I said, I find the current moderation system doing its job commendably well. The only problem that I see that the comments on this story have revealed is that people who really see effort to abuse the system may overwhelm, or at least overload the moderators, and it must be frustrating for them. I cannot really see an obvious way to remedy the situation.
There is one thing that I actually am worried about, though, perhaps reflecting the frustration of the moderators. There seem to be several comments that have been moderated down, that I for one really don't see deserving it. Please, moderators, remember that you should only consider the topicality, language, and information content of a comment, not the opinions it expresses.
In addition to the hordes of (quite appropriately downmoderated) comments mainly concerned with bodily fluids, there are some comments which merely criticize the late Mr. Stevens and point out that something good may, in their opinion, result from his demise. I find it most unsettling to see posts such as these, not blatantly offensive and quite topical, moderated down. Yes, the dead should be respected, because it's unfair to abuse someone who cannot defend himself. But that doesn't mean that one should suddenly only start saying positive things about the dead. People have a right to their opinions unbiased by their subject's death, and as long as they are expressed with dignity, and are topical, I see no reason to moderate them down, even if the moderators are offended by them.
Like some comments have already pointed out, had Bill Gates died, it's doubtful that comments remarking that his demise might be positive for Linux would get moderated down. As a more extreme example, consider the phrases "Good riddance, Hitler", and "Good riddance, Stevens", uttered right after the deaths of the respective individuals. If you are to be impartial, you should moderate both the same way.
Actually, I cannot help being reminded of the Daria episode "The Misery Chick" where a local celebrity dies, and Daria, being the only one criticizing him after his death, gets shunned by everyone. I wouldn't like to compare Slashdot readership to the students of Lawndale High...
Lauri Alanko

Dead? Hardly.
Last night, my friends and I held a wake for MST3K, then signed on-line to mourn in bits and bytes. It was sad, but a ten year run is a damn good run for any show.
We take comfort in the fact that it isn't dead, however. There are websites that have text 'MiSTings' such as (Website #9 and SVAM, and there are rabid MST3K fans everywhere. Some of us circulate amateur MiSTings on video or audio tape as well.
Dead? Hardly. As long as there's drivel, ranting, and shallow pop culture, we'll be there with quips. -
Re:Microsoft Standard(s) Practices
I phrased that incorrectly.. Here's what I meant to say there: MSN messenger offers incompatable features that AIM doesn't have. Those features may not be very desirable, but if you don't use MSNM the people that do will be able to do more things than you. It's just like Internet Explorer 4.0, it did a lot of the same things Netscape did, but the codes to do them weren't always the same. That fragmented the Web development community and did a lot of damage to Netscape.
That said, I should also correct another thing I said.. It turns out that AOl is blocking the Yahoo! software too, since that's the only way to keep MSNM users out. That was incorrect, but I stand by my original statement: MSN Messenger is just Microsoft's latest embrace, extend and smother move, aimed squarely at America Online.

Re:What about DaVinci?
I went to the DaVinci site and davinciworld.com...
They only have 25 shareware applications available (mostly games) for it. Compare this with the thousands and thousands of 3rd party applications available for the Palm. If you are satisfied with just using the built-in apps for a dayplanner replacement, the maybe DaVinci is an alternative to the Palm. But for anything else, the Palm rules. (even the built-in apps have 3rd party replacements that really improve the functionality of it).

The general philsophy on peopleI'm not even going to touch what's going on in Colorado. I don't mean to sound apathetic, but that's not my problem (in that I'm not directly involved). Instead, our problem is what's being pointed in our direction in the blame department. Now, I'm trying to refrain form screaming "People suck!" here, but it's not easy.
Now, in a recent poll of parents by CNN ( http://www. cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/stories/1999/04/22/school.vio
l ence.poll/), the parents received a 51% for "deserving a great deal of blame." Right behind it, in third rank, was TV, movies, and music, with 49%. Two ranks down is the Internet itself (god I hate capitalizing that word).Am I the only person that sees anything wrong with this?
We all get pissed off because people are pointing fingers, but think about it. What can come of it, when 34% of the parents polled point a a mass collection of electrons transmitting themselves from connection port to connection port and blame it some how. That's not even scraping into the whole bypass of the person actually watching/listening to the entertainment media's condition. Those kids listened to KMFDM, therefore KMFDM is evil! Sha. Okie.
Human are stupid, panickey animals. This has to be expected. Not enjoyed, but expected. I guess that's it...Oh, one other thing. This is pure hearsay, but I've been told that that Christian guy who started that whole gay Teletubbie thing shot his big, fat mouth off on the topic. Something like RPGs are the root of all evil. Like we haven't heard that before... Gah.

Here is the correct one:
http://blevins.simplenet.com/take-my-job.html -
This is plagiarism
ESR must have copied this letter.
I saw a suspiciously similar letter here over a month ago, written by Jack Stipple. The problem with Jack was (besides being a little psychotic) that he didn't understand that maybe the job that he had wasn't really needed or wanted. He had a noble goal of saving all the nuts and acorns in the world, but killing squirrels was not the best way to approach it. Maybe ESR needs to understand that expanding the marketshare of OpenSource(tm) software is a worthy goal, but not if it means compromise.
We already have two worthy replacements already in place:
Tim 0'Reilly can tout the benefits of a "Collaborative Software Development Environment".
RMS can preach the value of Freedom in software.
ESR can now take a break from trying to confuse the public on the difference between these two. -

You know, this could be an Urban Legend
There is a well-known urban legend that the FCC is considering treating ISP calls like long-distance calls, and putting tariffs on them. This particular Urban Legend, which frequently makes the rounds on Email, has been debunked here:
http://snopes.simplenet.com/s poons/faxlore/congress.htm
So, every time I hear anything about the FCC and charging extra fees for ISP access, I immediately think "oh know. Not this UL again."

It ain't dead . . .I admit, I'm going to miss the show. It was funny and in some cases brilliantly subversive. Was it a "geek" show as some suggest? I think only in the way that it was a lot more savvy and intelligent than 99% of the television dreck out there. It made us laugh about media and culture, but it also made us think.
I don't expect MST3K to die away - it's an idea as well as a show - the idea of making humorous but insightful commentary on various forms of media. The idea is there, and exists and will survive in on-line form at:

Because of increased bigotry directed against Europeans, the Euro-American Student Union Civil Rights organization was founded. Discrimination and hate directed against Europeans and Euro-Americans is increasing, but the Euro-American Student Union is at the forefront in the struggle to insure that the civil rights of Euro-Americans are not trampled.

Euro-American Student UnionThe Euro basher claims:
the two-headed eagle and the shield, sporting a nice bunch of twigs and axe - both a symbol from Roman times, but in modern times also a sign of the facists
You hate filled anti-European hate mongers have no sense of shame or respect for the truth. The symbols of which you speak are common to most every European country and countries founded by Europeans. Why not pick up a an American quarter dollar coin and on the reverse side you will see the American Eagle guarding the bundle of sticks which represents unity and the rule of law. This symbol can be found in many courthouses and other public buildings including the U.S. Supreme Court. So much for your dirty smear. The Euro-American Student Union is a Civil Rights organization devoted to protecting the civil rights of European Americans. Your hateful remarks are evidence enough that the Euro-American Student Union must continue its mission to protect Euro-Americans from bigots like you.
