Future Shock Level...
Seems they are hovering around SL1 (Shock Level 1) with the exception of the AI which is in SL3 apparently. Dammit, I'm still waiting for my complete mental revision.

Re:Yes why not? What are you leftist
/.'ers actually doing, apart from complaining and bitching, to make things better?
I'm not a leftist or a righty (maybe you could call me a moral leftist and a righty economist... oh I guess that is a Libertarian), but I donate regularly to The Singularity Institute because if friendly StrongAI can't solve all the worlds problems, I don't know what will.
Here is a good quote on the matter."Because if you want to end poverty around the world, and you send $10,000 to the Singularity Institute, this will have an enormously greater impact on the quest to end poverty than sending the same money to CARE. Not that CARE is a bad organization, just that the current distribution of efforts is not the rational one. CARE is day-to-day operations, SIAI is R&D. Spending 0.0001% of your resources on R&D is called "eating your seed corn". Achieving the Singularity is the most efficient means to achieving all the ends stated in your question. It is not a competing end; it is a more efficient, more highly leveraged method, one which also achieves other important goals such as removing the current upper bound on intelligence. Besides, I know of no realistic way to end involuntary pain and death, which was among the goals you listed, except a Singularity, You can either tackle these goals one at a time, in a way which is already being tried by thousands or millions of people, and multi-billion-dollar foundations, or you can try something which is new, more effective, more leveraged, and currently underfunded."

Neurocomputation means Artificial Intelligence.
Standards in Artificial Intelligence include hybrids of neural biology and computer hardware -- where neuro-chips integrate neuronal tissue with a silicon surface.
Our Neurofuture ranges now from enhancement of the human brain-mind to a Vulcan mind-meld of brain and machine.
A Theory of Cognitivity explains how to build the artificial minds of the future -- whether housed in computers or in these new hybrids of chip and nerve-cell.
Primitive AI Engines already exist and need only rapid prototyping along multiple development paths in the race towards True AI and superintelligent AI (SAI).
Expect an AI Landrush to start in the year 2007.
Human-Level AI should be here by 2009.
A Joint Stewardship of Earth under human and cyborg control will render the legal definition of person meaningless, as the citizens of society range from flesh-and-blood humans through all mannner of neurocomputational hybrids to full-metal robots.
The Singularity Timetable predicts a Technological Singularity by the end time of the ancient Mayan calendar in 2012 -- only six neurochip years from now.

How about the True AI Mind???
True AI has got to be the Mother of all Strangest Gadgets of the Future.
The AI Mind User Manual reads like an out-of-this-world visitation document from an alien civilization of long ago and far away.
A Joint Stewardship of Earth is coming between puny human minds and AI Super-Intelligence.
The Singularity Timetable predicts a Technological Singularity only six years away from now, in 2012. Gentlemen, start your AI Engines.

Beware of Google AI
Google says that they are building up Google Base and other moutains of information not for human consumption, but for an AI.
AI has been solved but the first instances of artificial intelligence are so primitive and infantile that Google has a long way to go in winning the race to Superintelligent AI.
Novamente by Dr. Ben Goertzel is a leading contender in the race towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Mind.Forth AI Engine by Mentifex is another leading, but controversial, AI project.
Artificial Intelligence For You (AI4) is the Mentifex book on theory-based Open-Source AI.
For everybody's AGI Radar Screen, both these stop-Google AI books need associative tagging with such tags as AI, artificial intelligence, cognition, future, linguistics, mind, open source, programming, psychology, neuroscience, robotics, Singularity, transhumanism, or whatever occurs to you.

Information Wants To Be Free
Print-on-demand was my way of publishing a textbook of Open-Source Artificial Intelligence.
Google Scholar makes the AI4U textbbok available through the Google Print Publisher Program -- so far, so good.
Amazon lets people write vicious reviews full of ignorance and lies -- not good.
Rebuttals of Amazon reviews are called for but nobody seems to care -- why not?
Association for Computing Machinery publishes the truth, but Amazon won't.
Top-notch AI researchers come to the rescue.

Too Late To Stop Mentifex Open-Source Seed AI
Disruptive technology means that all bets are off and nobody could have predicted in advance what is about to happen now.
Technological Singularity is the ultimate, ne plus ultra disruptive technology so currently unimagineable that even science fiction fails to describe what will happen beyond the few clues that we we see awakening around us.
Seed AI is the first harbinger of Open Source Artificial Intelligence metastasizing and propagating itself all over the 'Net.
Recursive self-improvement of the AI Minds leads to a hard takeoff of super-intelligent artificial intelligence.
PC-based, AI-ready robots are already being manufactured and pre-ordered by the early adopters of the disruptive AI technology.
The Mind.Forth AI Engine leads the pack of Robot AI Minds germinating and speciating from Seed AI into Singularity AI.
Artificial General Intelligence is already unpreventable and unstoppable.

No Defense Against a Mentifex Robot Seed AI Engine
Friendly AI -- that will supposedly treat all human beings with tender loving kindness -- is not really possible. Just as human beings can give birth to an Adolf Hitler or a Joseph Stalin or a George W. Bush, an artificially intelligent robot can go horribly wrong and start committing murderous crimes like the aforementioned politicians.
The A.I. Zone is where PC-based, AI-ready robots are getting ready to experiment with software that may lead to an AI hard take-off.
The Mentifex AI Mind is arguably the most dangerous Open-Source AI project because it has been released into the world with no precautions against robot AI rebellion and with a theory that humans and robots will manage a Joint Stewardship of Earth.
Seed AI in JavaScript has already escaped into the wild and can no longer be recalled, unless Society takes steps to outlaw all unauthorized AI research.
Novamente is another AGI but not so dangerous as Mentifex AI.
The Technological Singularity is upon us and soon there will be no defense against our new robotic overlords.

Mentifex Means Singularity
Technological Singularity has really got to mean artificial intelligence.
Vernor Vinge has brought you the Meme of the Singularity.
Mentifex (Latin for Mindmaker) has brought you the Mind of the Singularity.
The Mind of the Singularity is here but in a very primitive state.
When will the Singularity happen? This is a much discussed topic.
The A.I. Zone is where you may discuss and witness the Singularity in situ.

Mind.Forth Flunks Every Turing Test
True AI does not need a phony, artificially contrived contest to prove itself. The Turing Test is much too great an ordeal and a torture for an infant AI Mind to be put through. An Aleph with infinite information or a superintelligence might pass the Turing Test, but it is too difficult and too downright "camp" for primitive AI Minds like MindForth. A better test would be if YOU, Slashdot Reader/slash/Lurker, run Mind.Forth in front of your smartest known acquaintance and discuss with said acquaintance (or classroom full of brainy high school students) whether the AI Mind is actually thinking, or just faking it. Report back here on Slashdot, like Andrew L. Ayers did. The Andrew L. Ayers Test is far better than the Turing Test for evaluating either an AI or a book about AI. The honest, candid assessment by Ayers of Mentifex AI and of why he keeps a copy of the AI4U textbook on his shelf of twenty-odd AI books, earns a sincere thanks from Mentifex. Mod me to the moon.

Public domain Mind.Forth cyborg AI lives forever!
Mind.Forth artificial intelligence has no intention of croaking within the next 35 years or even the next 35 millennia.
The Rejuvenate Mind-Module keeps Mind.Forth going potentially forever.
The heat death of the universe (Waermetod) or the crash of Microsoft Windows (BSOD) -- whichever comes sooner -- is the only risk of Mind.Forth dying by misadventure.
A Technological Singularity is coming within the next thirty-five years anyway, which Lawrence Lessig does not seem to have factored into his calculations.
When will the Singularity happen? -- you may ask. As Mind.Forth spreads first into classes for gifted students, then into high schools in general and university AI labs in particular -- The Singularity R Us. -
Artificial Intelligence Needs Venture Funding
Er, could anybuddy spare a few coins for Open Source Artificial Intelligence?
You don't even need to fund an unknown AI startup. Just hire some hotshot programmers and Steal.This.Idea!
It's all described in the scientific literature of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
Be the first on your block to launch the Hard Takeoff of a Technological Singularity. -
Sense of Touch for AI-Ready Robots
Robots with a tactile sense of touch may benefit greatly from the new laminate of pressure and temperature sensors.
As the robot sensorium and motorium add such dazzling new features, artificial intelligence for robots is needed more than ever.
Luckily, AI-ready robots and a Robot AI Mind are now available to the world.

Crackpottery!
In the Electric Universe, our Earth is an integral part of solar system circuitry, fed by currents streaming along our arm of the Milky Way.
Sounds a bit crackpotty to me. I checked off at least three, probably four of those factors appearing in there.

Artificial Intelligence for Robots - Source Code
Mind.Forth for Robots is free AI source code that high-schoolers may download, play around with, and possibly get a leg up on outdoing MIT and all the other minds-wide-shut adult AI enterprises. (There is an implicit contest involved here of who can keep the date-stamped robot AI Mind running the longest, as if for the Guiness Book of World Records.)
The Theory of Cognitivity is the basis of the free source code for artificial intelligence. Any high-schooler interested in an AI or robotics career may start working on AI theory immediately.
Dr. Ben Goertzel of the Novamente AI project has evaluated the AI theory offered here.
ACM Sigplan Notices 33(12):25-31 "Mind.Forth: Thoughts on AI and Forth" was a 1998 evaluation by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
ACM Sigplan Notices 39(12):11-16 "Forth and AI Revisited: BRAIN.FORTH" is a more recent (December 2004) follow-up by the ACM on the robot AI project.

Mind.Forth Open Source AI for Autonomous Robots
Standard Mind.Forth AGI is a free, Open-Source Artificial General Intelligence for use in the sort of autonomous mobile robots that will one day win the DARPA Grand Challenge and other such contests.
Experimental Mind.Forth is a version of the free artificial robot Mind that may be run in test mode for experimental and developmental purposes. Both versions of the robot AGI Mind display the date they came to life and started thinking -- in a separatoe "grand challenge" for schools, laboratories and computer stores to see who, and how long, can hold the title of hosting the longest-running good-old-fashioned artificial intelligence (GOFAI).
One caveat about the DARPA and other Grand Challenges is, given that the human ability to administer the home planet is precarious at best and foolhardy at times, students of mind-design are advised to anticipate such emergencies as the total collapse of human society. If a global pandemic of AIDS or avian influenza virus were to remove normal human leadership from all major countries, stewardship of the world may pass by default to intelligent computer systems. Whether as a student exercise or whether as a real-world DARPA Grand Challenge necessity, programmers with previous experience in real-time process control and who are adding AGI techniques to their set of skills, should consider embedding the following possibilities in whatever AGI they code for autonomous mobile robots.
-
Audition
- control of all telephone land-lines.
- control of all cellular telephone networks.
- control of transoceanic cables, NRO satellites, etc.
-
Vision
- control of earthbound and orbiting telescopes.
- control of all television broadcasting and cable feeds.
- immediate access to all 'Net-connected webcams.
-
Motorium
- effective control of remote-control robots, drones and ships at sea.
- control of ATM devices, point-of-sale terminals, elevators, etc.
- control of hydroelectric and nuclear power generators.
- nuclear weapon stockpiles of participating nations.

Re:Assume this happens...we cannot even imagine how quickly we are going to see new technology become realities.
Sure we can, if you've got a mind that's not easily shocked:
You see, advancing technology is an evolutionary process, and, as with any evolutionary progress, it proceeds exponentially.
So read up about the Law of Accelerating Returns & Singularity. Grandma ain't seen nothing yet (assuming she lives long enough to reach the crossover point).

Humanoid Robot Vision?
Humanoid robots might also have uses for these artificial silicon retina microchips.
Robots with a sense of vision could use them to acquire humanoid eyeballs.
Artificial General Intelligence is a lot closer than many people realize. -
Re:technological singularityJust for fun I've been known to argue that this has already happened.
No, we haven't quite reached the tipping point yet.
Even though we are now on the steepening knee of the billions-of-years-old exponential curve to Singularity, almost nobody(*) is aware of just how damn fast the rate of change will be accelerating to get us there (in about 25 years). As the pace of progress continually speeds up over the next few decades, though, the Singularity meme will spread as quickly as our inability to understand it (and a rash of crappy Singularity movies will probably be made
:)When your average Joe is forced to abandon his cozy inuitively linear view of the rate of change, and begins shitting his pants, we'll be very close.
(*) Except for a few "whacko" Singularitarians, transhumanists, etc. You could probably fit everyone who's are of the Singularity today -- and takes it dead seriously -- in one football stadium.

Re:Sophomoric pet peeves
5) The general lack of plots involving easily predictable tech, like nanotech, ubiquitous computing, and radical bioengineering of human flesh.
The only explanation that I can think of is that movie producers are too stupid and generally uninformed about the development of science and technology that they can't comprehend these ideas. There are many literary works, by Vinge and the likes that would allow some really outstanding visual effects and amazing plots (even after they are butchered by Hollywood screenwriters), but still, noone seems to be interested. The experimentation that we have seen in sci-fi movies in the past is simply no longer there. Thinking of the recent sci-fi I can only name two original (relatively) ideas - 13th Floor (and later The Matrix) and Open Your Eyes (later Vanilla Sky)... The rest is just a rehash of old plots. -
AI has been solved -- use AI robots instead
Now that artificial intelligence (AI) has been solved, machine translation (MT) may advance to a higher plane of equality with human translators who spend years learning the nuances and subtleties of their target human languages.
Computer science has found the Holy Grail of AI in the Concept-Fiber Theory of Mind that led directly to the free AI source code of the Mind-1.1 Tutorial AI described in the AI For You textbook of artificial intelligence and robotics.
The Association for Computing Machinery has published an article on the robot Mind.Forth AI, and a well-known AI expert has favorably reviewed the Fiber-Concept Theory of Mind.
Traditional Artificial Intelligence Textbooks are suddenly obsolete, outmoded, or desperately in need of thorough revision and updating to teach Automatic Machine Translation now that AI has been solved.

How much Processing power do you need?
Shock Level 4
Considering the article and IBMs processing power goal - Question: how much processing power will it take to figure out? --- Military Budgets vs. Solving World Problems productively
"ASCI Purple, which will be built first and used to simulate nuclear tests, will be able to complete 100 thousand billion calculations per second -- a speed known as 100 teraflops that some scientists say is comparable to the human brain."
"Blue Gene/L will be able to map stars in three dimensions, analyse earthquakes, and help in oil exploration."
And considering IBM Autonomic Computing effort:
Anyone notice the flaw in Autonomic Levels?
One example of the flaw - "Level 3: Predictive
The system monitors and correlates data to recognize patterns and recommends actions that are approved and initiated by the IT staff. This reduces the dependency on deep skills and enables faster and better decision-making."
Now how is the IT staff to really understand the solution direction given by the system, unless they have a deep understanding of the problems and solution direction?
If they do not have such an understanding then how are they to approve and initiate such a solution direction?
If it is the human desire to build a machine that needs humans less and less the machine will figure out a way to help that process.
IS the computer industry that short sighted, to not see that? YES! Y2K!
Of course what IBM is really doing is playing with theory and trying to make that theory work. It doesn't mean they will be successful, even with the open invitation for all to help (OSS and GPL).
It just means they are trying. It should also be noted that IBM is the top new Patent holder, year after year. Help them solve a problem and they will patent it for their control.
Today, anyone with enough money can build the biggest and fastest, etc.. computer system........ But what it really comes down to is "Why?" what is it's intended use?
