Re:Post is very misleading about actual article
Re: "Lol, you really don't seem to know how redshift works. The shift occurs in the spectral absorption and emission lines of interstellar gas (mostly Hydrogen). These have a specific fingerprint (i.e. a pattern of lines, like a barcode) that shifts to the red side of the spectrum. The quasar is just the light source that ionizes the gas in front of it, often hundreds of thousands light years away."
That's a simple narrative you've got there. Halton Arp was Edwin Hubble's assistant. He states in the theory section of his Intrinsic Redshift lecture:
"[I]f the electron mass - when it makes its transition in the atom, and emits the photon - if the mass is small, the photon is weak and it's redshifted. As the electron grows in mass, the photon which is emitted is stronger, and it drops in redshift."
Plasma physicist Eric Lerner has pointed out that if active galactic nuclei can be compared to plasma focus devices, then it is alternatively possible that quasars are being ejected electron-deficient. Arp was not a plasma physicist, and it seems unlikely that he was aware of Lerner's detailed argument.
Wal Thornhill appears to have built his own inference on top of Lerner's plasma physics approach:
"Quasars appear to be ejected, deficient in electrons, from their parent active galactic nucleus (AGN). The lightweight electrons remain tangled in the AGN plasmoid for much longer than the heavier protons and uncharged neutrons. As a result, the quasar has lower initial charge polarization compared to matter on Earth and, from the principle of E-MOND, all subatomic particles in the quasar have lower masses. Therefore, the emitting atoms also have lower masses, and their radiation has lower energy. The result is the observed intrinsic redshift of atomic emissions from quasars and their relative faintness."
What you are doing is pointing to the textbook theory, and saying "See?!" What these guys are pointing out is that there are alternative ways to explain what we see. They are working at the level of scientific frameworks, formulating new ways to interpret the data. This is a level of thinking above what you yourself are doing. Nobody is confused here about what the textbook says. Higher-level reasoning simply looks like confusion from the outside.

What's your fucking point? You don't like the words I use? So fucking what. I could give a rats ass what you think. All the CHILD MOLESTERS USING STOLEN IDENTITIES who can't be bothered to put their names to their words can fuck themselves. Also, you fucking pieces of shit who want to dictate what language people can use can fuck yourselves too. You are my mortal enemy. The time has come for violence. You and yours are on one side me and those who value freedom of expression are on the other. You seek to undermine democracy and freedom by restricting speech. I will oppose you. Violently if necessary. Simple as that. This is a war. You will lose.

Re:Google Focused on the Chrome NOT the OS
create a full featured HTML5/WebKit compliant browser (which they should have done YEARS ago)
They're doing that right now.
ChromeOS is successful, but it still falls short of a good web-centric OS. Treating multiple open processes as simply "tabs" makes it really hard to get around. If specific web apps could get their own icon on the taskbar (and could still have subtabs), a Windows derivation has a good chance at being more usable. Task-switching is painful when everything is a tab in a monolithic window.

at least 1person approves of all WindBournes liesSeems like at least one person approves of all WindBournes lies...
Or did WindBourne get a mod point?WindBourne opened strongly with a lie about American beef. Directly contradicting the link in the post he responded to. No excuse for that one.
Then he quickly followed up with a two for one. Claiming America makes the most Electric vehicles and buys the most efficient air conditioners.
He was really on a roll, as almost immediately he posted this set of lies, claiming China has the worse air conditioning efficiency (they are better than America) and falsely accusing someone else of lying (even though they showed links). He also doubled down on his lies Replying to a linked IEA report with some random blog that didn't even agree with him anyway. Thinking that wasn't enough lies, he then falsely claimed again someone else was lying. He also attempted to lie about what his link said and tried to pretend he proved the other person was a liar. Quite a ballsy move, he must have been getting quite desperate.
Lastly to round out the week he went back to one of his longtime favourite lies. Claiming China is 80% coal.
So in summary, lies about beef, lies about electric vehicles, lies about air conditioning, lies about coal, and the standard "falsely calling everyone else a liar".
Will this be the new baseline for his level of lying or was this week just an outlier? Tune in next week to find out.

Re:Two Hour Parking Limit?
Because diesels pollute MUCH more than gas vehicles.
That's due to regulations. Gassers produce just as much soot as diesels and virtually all of it is the most-hazardous PM2.5. Urea injection all but eliminates NOx emissions, but DPFs not only produce them but they also result in diesels emitting fine soot just like gasoline vehicles. A diesel with Urea injection and an EGR and no other emissions system will produce less harmful emissions than a gasser, all else being equal.
All ICEs ultimately suck rocks, though, and should go away.

Re:Put the money into new Nuclear Energy
In fact the cost to humans has skyrocketed when you consider places like Chernobyl and Fukushima. No-one can live there anymore so the cost might as well be infinite for those people.
Actually that's not true and due to a bad understanding of radio-toxicology. Most of those evacuated from Fukushima were evacuated unnecessarily due to our use of the linear no threshold model. 1600 people died due to this evacuation that was only done because we model radiation risk on the wrong model that overestimates risk at small doses and underestimates risk at large doses. Its also likely that our fear of nuclear power is more dangerous to us than nuclear power itself. Certainly coal is more dangerous to us than nuclear.

Re:I think you need the reality check
I think at this point you have to provide some pretty solid evidence they are NOT going to launch Starlink because it's obviously going ahead.
There was solid evidence that Elon Musk's other company was going to dig a tunnel beneath the 405 freeway, but that tunnel was sued out of existence.
-
Provided Starlink doesn't get canceled like 405
StarLink will mean they can get all the streaming they want.
Until SpaceX launches Starlink service, it's vapor. Another Elon Musk venture recently canceled a planned tunnel dig after discovering that the locals demanded a work-to-rule on the environmental impact assessment.

Re:So it's Crackpot Science Saturday now?
Re: "There is a crap-ton of evidence placing quasars at cosmological distances. Arp's idea is one of the DISCARDED ideas about what quasars are for really good reasons.
I've already shown why this is not the case here.
Re: "Starting with - why are there no BLUE shifted quasars? If they are ejected from galaxies, we should should see ones coming at us as well as receding from us."
The fact that you made the suggestion points to a process for arguing against Arp which does not actually involve learning his model. Had you learned his model, you would know why this doesn't make any sense. I explain the situation here.
Re: "We have images of gravitationally lensed quasars while necessarily places them FURTHER AWAY than the galaxies acting as lenses. We've even witnessed time delayed changes in the multiple images from those lenses."
It's unlikely that all lensing claims will end up being validated over time as lenses. Arp himself commented that
"The sudden revival of gravitational lensing to the huge industry it is today is simply due to the quasars"
Seeing Red: Redshifts, Cosmology and Academic Science
Halton Arp"Prior to the 1950's Fritz Zwicky, the Swiss astronomer who had an illustrious and turbulent career in California, was aware that strong gravitational fields had been shown to bend light rays -- as in the famous eclipse observations of the displacement of positions of stars observed at a grazing angle to the sun's limb. At that time he started looking for an extragalactic object which might be directly behind another, and thus have its outer light rays bent inward by the gravitational field of the foreground object so that it formed a ring or halo. Some 'ring galaxies' were found, but they all seemed to be physical rings around the galaxy and not magnified background objects.
The more common situation to be expected was when the background object was not exactly centered and the gravitational ring collapsed into a one sided arc. But no striking examples of that were found either, so the subject had gone dormant. The sudden revival of gravitational lensing to the huge industry it is today is simply due to the quasars. In the 1960's and 70's I started finding high densities of quasars concentrated around nearby, low-redshift galaxies. Because of their high redshifts, it was felt that they could not be associated with low-redshift galaxies
...The Einstein Cross
...... When it was first discovered it caused a panic because it was essentially a high redshift quasar in the nucleus of a low redshift galaxy
... Gravitational galaxy lensing had to be invoked for this one ...'We put the slit of the spectrograph between quasars A and B in the Einstein Cross and we registered a broad Lyman alpha emission in each quasar. But between them we found a narrow Lyman alpha line -- it looks like there is some low density gas at the same redshift as the quasars between them.'
A jolt ran through me and I looked at him to try to read the expression on his face. As usual in such situations, his eyes avoided mine. The point was, of course, that a line between quasar A and B passed directly between the nucleus of the galaxy and quasar D. On the face of it high redshift gas was indicated near the nucleus of the low redshift galaxy. But what I knew, and what anyone can know looking at the Lyman alpha centered photograph in Color Plate 7-7, is that there is a putative Lyman alpha filament connecting quasar D to the galaxy nucleus. What the spectrum had confirmed was that this indeed was a low density, excited hydrogen filament connecting the two objects of vastly different redshift.

Re:Continue Moore's Law
Computers will not get much faster. You can get more cores and less power usage, but that is essentially it.
Single thread problems and cores to solve them, sure, but we've moved into the thousands of cores era, just by way of GPU.
The first time I switched to a CUDA implementation of Seti@Home, I doubled my previous 10 years of calculations in 2 weeks. Hence (bonus unpredictable value of discovery aside) we might as well have not bothered.
And the upgrades I made doubled and tripled the rate again, with no end in sight.
The Seti guys would probably do better designing a proper product that automatically didn't interfere with 3D games and Netflix framerates rather than relying on manual fine tuning, which doesn't really work, and many are not capable of, or the clumsy "only when computer not in use" setting which, being a wrapper around an internal setting and not a defined feature, cuts out surfing with browser but leaves in Netflix, where you don't touch the compterand hence it is "not in use."
