Re:Don't let Carmack win!!!
While John (Romero) deserves every single one of the -20 Daikatana points, he should get at least as many points back for his Melvin comic strips. His site used to have quite a few of them, but now all the links go the smugmug homepage, and his gallery there only has this one.

Re:Where did you get that linux doesn't like none?
Here is my source: http://blogs.smugmug.com/don/2008/05/01/mysql-and-the-linux-swap-problem/. It could be that it only shows on certain heavy workloads.
-
Re:What Has Changed?
The problem with swap is that the system will always use all available RAM for system cache. And once it has it it will not give it up and will swap stuff out. There are people using RAM disks for swap on mysql servers which makes some sense, and gives you some control over stuff. I mean, if you can fit your entire table space into RAM, you don't want linux messing it up by swapping out some lesser used tables just to get system cache.
It's always a good idea to get a lot of RAM and less swap. Having a big swap file is not going to be a benefit. If you have 8GB of RAM and you are swapping 8GB your system is going to be so slow you won't be able to move. Swap is for emergencies, and if you want to move some less used processes there it's ok for that also.

Re:If this is rocket racing why do I see a propell
I assumed it was a shot from a Red Bull Air Race cockpit - this plane perhaps? http://planeimages.smugmug.com/gallery/2152033_hLHrx/1/111595356_mmhZF#111595356_mmhZF
You can tell because they're flying around a river in a city - that's where all of their races happen. Quite interesting racing to watch.

Re:God Bless America!
I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free
Yeah, sure. Like being arrested because you're demonstrating peacefully against the worst president your country ever had.
Or maybe being handcuffed and arrested after police breaks one of your legs because you were marching for your rights.
Or maybe like being beaten for no reason by a wannabe Rambo in a place you already have no way to escape from.Do the world a favor: shut up and go back cleaning your rifle and thumping your bible! You haven't the slightest idea about what the word freedom means. Especially from the ways you export it.
If that's freedom for you, well, then today you are celebrating the wrong thing.

omg guys tragic news for the slashdot communityGuys I don't know how you can sit around and talk so casually about Google when the Slashdot community is being rocked by the revelation that John Romero's career has fallen to the point where he's now working as a Tina Fey impersonator to support his extravagent haircare needs. The resemblance is striking. It's rumored that he offers "full service" (wink wink)if you slip him a bottle of Herbal Essence.

Ok this was amusing, I just upgraded from 3b4 to 3b5 and it decided to replicate the forward/back button control a few times: Screenshot. Easily fixed under customise toolbar though...

Re:YouTube are NOT doing this the right way!
Semi-pro photographers should pony up for a SmugMug account. Easier to use than flickr, faster than flickr, completely unlimited, with photo ordering & revenue sharing under the uploaders control, and absolutely no claims of ownership to your data.

GPS and Photography
Yeah, this has been going on for a while now and there's a few main players in the game.
Flickr is of course a common one and lots of people use it.
Smugmug lets you geolocate your images too for those of us out there selling prints.
If you use a photoblog powered by Pixelpost, there is an addon available to let you map out your photos.
Finally, if you want to get your images overlayed in Google Earth, you'll want to go through Panoramio.
Now, there are two main ways to get your images geolocated in the first place:
1) You can manually do it by selecting a photo and then clicking a point in the world using Google Earth or Google Maps. While this works, it's really slow and tedious. Programs like Picasa supports this method by letting you click your location through Google Earth.
2) If you have a GPS receiver, you can create a tracklog as you travel and then use a program such as RoboGeo to automatically correlate the timestamp of the image you took to your location at that specific point in time and then stamp that info into the image's EXIF info. Then when you upload your images to the web, the GPS info will be automatically read and placed into the map. This is, by far, the easier method. -

Re:You don't have to put it up
...please don't take it personally if I take your camera and smash it after you take a picture of me? (I mean no threat, just bringing up a point) if someone cares enough to purposefully not post themselves on the web, perhaps out of fear of a stalker, what right do you have to "publish" without consent?
Photographers have every right to photograph you if you are in a public place. Like the grandfather poster, I also do street photography but unlike him I do make mine available. If you required that photographers got the permission of everyone in their photographs then taking photographs out doors would be impossible. While I generally try to obscure the faces of those I photograph, I don't always because it adds to the shot. If you are outdoors, expect to be seen. -

Do *you* need an SLRI'm a photo geek and absolutely can't live without my Canon 350D (and whatever I replace it with next year). But how do you know *you* have it in you to be a photo geek ? Easy. Just take the following questionaire
You see this picture and notice:- The wonderful tonal range and interesting composition
- Whoa... look at them tits.
And btw,if you answered 2, (and assuming you're a typical slashdotter ) you'll probably never see tits like that in real life. -

Re: better URL
Here is a more specific URL:
http://maps.smugmug.com/
It isn't quite drag-and-drop, you have to enter latitude and longitude unless your camera embeds GPS information in the EXIF metadata. But it works well, using Google Maps API. It integrates somewhat with Google Earth, too.
They have had this feature for several months now, and have already revved it once or twice. -

Market Forces
So why don't people use Photobucket or Snapfish or Snapzilla or VillagePhotos or Zoto or TinyPic or SmugMug or Greatest Journal or...
My personal favorite DeviantArt?
There's not much of a story here except that if you commit to one hosting service, you run the risk of them being complete jerks with your content choice. -
Re:What's the point?
I don't see what downloading and installing Google Earth gives me other than novelty.
Basically, anybody who makes money off geography is interested in Google Earth, because of the ease and speed with which you can add placemarks and build your own personal database of them, and get distances and directions between them, and exchange database files with others. Think real estate agents, geologists, demographics researchers, meteorologists, epidemic-tracking biologists...Add terrain and 3D building data, and you've got a real tool. Check out all of the practical industry uses in the Google Earth Blog.
I showed it to a real-estate friend and his jaw dropped. He "got it" right away. Catalog properties geographically from a laptop...link to web page...provide instant directions...e-mail placemarks to buyers...let them survey site...???...profit!!!
I'm using it to attach latitude/longitude data to locations of my photographs. It is much faster than the browser interface. And you can see where that can lead.
The fact that is an application is a feature, not a disadvantage. Instead of being shoehorned into a web interface, you get a marked-up globe so responsive that the interactivity itself becomes a feature. -
I also own the lx1It does have more grain at iso 400 than some digicams, but I use noisereduction via noiseninja and it's an irrelevant concern. I was looking for a wide aspect ratio camera with full manual controls, a good lens, *and* one that was small and could be with me at all times. There simply was nothing else on the market that fit that criteria. The image stabilization is a plus...and I use it quite a bit.
If you're interested, here is my gallery of sample pix taken with the lx1 in varying lighting, contrasty situations, backlit, and using the OIS. I have another gallery with sample pix at iso 400 both with and without NR and RAW versus jpg files. You can find it via navigating the site.

enjoy scoping out the camera.

Going after a charitable company
Going after a company known for providing charitable contributions and trying to get the owners arrested isn't exactly the smartest thing to do. This guy should pick his battles better.
If the Seattle news media are reading this, I have a great headline for you:
"Jack Thompson goes after charitable game news company"
No matter what would happen to PA because of him calling the cops on them, his reputation with the mass media would definitely go further down the tubes!
You want to go after a company that has done this!? Shame on you! -
Re:Marketshare Stabilized
From your response, it seems like you view websites as some static, one-way, communications tool. But many of us do things that require a lot more from a browser than displaying boxes correctly.
A lot of websites are set up to DO things. For instance, look at a site like smugmug.com
Smugmug is VERY concerned about being multi-platform. In fact, they have written parts of their site to work BEST on OS X. One of the big things on the site is uploading pictures.
Works great on a Mac
Works great on IE on Windows
Whoops...can't use Active X in Firefox. So basically, you are screwed.
Same thing on a lot of other photo-upload sites I've been to.
So if you really enjoy uploading files one by one, by all means- fight the good fight and refuse to use 'non standards compliant browsers.'
But, if you are actually concerned about getting work done...and offering your visitors the means to get their work done efficiently...well, then you just gotta use what works.
So no, I won't worry about Firefox ONLY users...because they are too busy uploading their 250th file...while everyone else is doing something else. -
Re:advantages of film
I love the d70. You can see TONS of examples of the color reprouction on my site, http://jasoncoyne.smugmug.com/ Stay away from the theatre photos, they are very dark, and won't give you a good idea of how it does in better lighting. Try some of the shots from Paris. Color is definatly different between canon and nikon. Canon seems a bit more flat to me tho, but has less noise. I think its a preference thing.
The full frame SLRs are nice because you know exactly what a given lens is going to do (if you are used to that lens in a film body) but the selection of lenses and bodies is a lot less. Nikon and Cannon have all the good lens selection, and they are both the 3/4 frame.
On the other hand, the smaller format gives you longer effective focal lengths with all of your lenses. your 200mm would instantly become a 300mm.
(its not actual optical zoom, but its not a pure crop like some people claim, its the difference in formats. Just like a 35mm film camera isnt really cropping compared to a medium format)
Im suprised you like to shoot in color then print b&w, you have a double hit of contrast lost in that workflow. If you are shooting slide film tho, you probably don't see the difference that much tho.
There is a great site at www.kenrockwell.com he gives reviews of all the digital stuff, and lots of medium format stuff. Great advice there. He does a lot with exposure of slide vs film, and getting the zone system down too. -
Already happening...
Some of the best sites on the net are both high quality and pay. And one of the reasons people flock to them? No ads!
We're seeing it ourselves at smugmug. It's been a core "feature" and selling point since Day 1. Why? Because I hate ads and I'm willing to pay not to see them.
We've seen this sort of thing over and over. "No one will pay for HBO!" ... "No one will ever buy bottled water!" ... Well, it turns out, people DO pay when they can get something of higher quality/value/less pain.
Viva pay internet! -
Re:I can't check my email!
Hey, I'm wanting to start selling some of my photrography
Start by putting them on a site where people can review them and then don't listen to the Paula on those sites - they say everything is a nice photo.
After you do that, you will sadly learn that your photo lie in the suck-istani region. You can always try to sell stuff here or here (caution - my affiliate link, I get a kickback if you sign up) , but then you are competing with this http://www.deviantart.com/print/47625/ -

of photo sharing & published APIs
Of particuarly interest to
/. readers are probably those sites with open, thriving, growing APIs. smugmug's got one, as does flickr.
The result, of course, is tons of user-created uploaders, organizers, applications, and even sister web services. Pretty sweet, if you ask me, and lots of fun. There's not many things more rewarding than a customer discovering the API and coming up with something brilliant.
Disclaimer: I co-founded smugmug, so bias is present, but I've been a geek my whole life, so open APIs still get me excited. :) -
My experiences with Smugmug
I have personally found Smugmug a good site to use.
The fact that I can just upload my originals and it does the rest with regards to resizing them to 3 different sizes (small, medium, large) plus with a nice interface with no annoying adds. Plus no size limits and good site speeds are a bonus.
Warning:LINK WHORE! Yes yes, feel free to check out my gallery if you wish.
:P I recommend the airshow! -

Re:Much prefer smugmug.com
Hey, thanks.
:)
I'm the CEO at smugmug.com, arguably one of flickr's better competitors. (Actually, since we were here before them and have larger share, I suppose they're one our better competitors. Whatever).
Luckily, the flickr gang and I have had a chance to meet and hang out, and to be honest, they're very smart, talented people. There are a lot of other companies playing in this space, and most of them don't have a clue.
I think it would help all of us who are clueful if someone (the media, geeks who have family that hang on their every word, etc) would sit up and notice that sites like ofoto and shutterfly provide *really poor* sharing. They're sorta like the AOL of photo sharing. Thank goodness sites like smugmug and flickr exist once people discover how not-useful their sites are.
Kudos to the flickr guys for the great reviews! They deserve them.
