This is just part of a larger battle.
If things continue as they have, our economy (and government) will be at the beck and call of the CEO's of a small group of corporations. This group will almost certainly include Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Disney (RIAA/MPAA). We keep getting distracted by global conflicts at least partially our fault, as well as bickering over social issues like Abortion and Gay Marriage.
In a generation or two, the United States will be like Mexico is now (and not because of immigration). There will be a few who will get rich like Bill Gates who will simply take the money and run.

You nailed it! Jefferson recognized that unrestricted corporate power, not unlike political power, could lead to tyranny. Contrary to current myth, corporations faced strict regulation (eg, full liability, limited to 10-40 years, dissolved unless serving public interest), at first. Power has grown over time leading to the titanic monopolistic multi-nationals we have today.
Under Lincoln, the spirit of the 14th Amendment was perverted to apply to the corporation (railroad), upheld by the Supreme Court. Lincoln recognized the implications and spoke of his regret. Also due to the civil war the balance of power shifted (by decree?): union (Federal government) supremacy over the states.

Some advice and sites to visitFirst, turn off your broadcast television, exercise or do something physical at least three times a week, and eat healthier such as by drinking more clean water instead of soda or juice and eating organic food in reasonable proportions (especially organic meats if not a vegetarian).
Then, read James Lowen's _Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Texbook Got Wrong_ to see how your mind has unknowingly been filled with nationalist and consumer crap (despite your technical proclivities). Also check out Howard Zinn. Learn to live simply and frugally so you have more options:
If you have started doing all that, by now you are primed to begin to question what education really means.
And further, to even question why people need to work and what it should mean to do useful things.
You'll have time to read great minds like Bertrand Russel and Freeman Dyson.
Then you can accept you are still stuck in a stupid system.
But you'll be positioned to make the best of it and yet still see how the world can be a made better place to for the bulk of humanity and other creatures.
Always remember in your darker hours to at least ask yourself the question, "Can life be made worth living?" And in your brighter hours, remember to ask yourself if you are playing a finite (to win) game or an infinite (to play) game?
And, finally, for continual inspiration, read _Voyage From Yesteryear_ by James P. Hogan.
Now go out and take some educated risks to try to make life worth living -- despite your future happiness possibilities already almost being ruined by being convinced you that you are "bright" just because you know some technical things (same thing almost happened to me).

Proof that journalism can be outsourced
Ok, not strictly on topic, but from the article tagline of PORTLAND, Ore, the team doing the discovery in Gainesville, Fla, and the writer having a Spirit One e-mail address that is the same ISP I use, I find it very interesting that this article could be written 3000 miles away from the actual research.
Plus, I noticed it because I had hopes of getting my hands on one of the prototypes when I saw the Portland, OR tagline- hoping that the team working in Florida was a mistake and that the balls were being produced at some paintball place close to me. I'd LOVE to have a civilian/spytech version of this tech- say a small audio sensor that could be fired from a paintball gun to stick to somebody's window. -
Re:Pretty braindeadYou might want to do some research on the history of corporations. They were designed to allow a group of people to do something the government wanted done but couldn't afford to do in exchange for limited liability and a time-limited share of the profits. Take toll roads for example. Instead of building an expensive road, the government would give a group of people the authorization to build the road, charge for passage (for a limited time) and be mostly free from individual liability if something goes wrong. The ownership of the road would revert to the entity that granted its charter upon completion of its duties (after the profit-taking). Modern corporations are not the norm.
Only since the Civil War have we had corporations that focus 100% on profit over benefit to their community, think they have free speech, etc. I believe that most corporate charters today still list the expected societal benefit that the corporation must fulfill its obligations and remain in existence. If the state governments would be willing to enforce the rules set down in corporate charters that they issue, there would be much fewer abuses like those committed by Enron, WorldCom, etc.

Par for the Course for the GOPThis is part of the GOP's fascist-like merger of industry and government. Now the PAC's are no longer the enemies that the Republican Revolution of '94 denounced them as, they've been co-opted.
I'm seeing less and less of a deliniation between the GOP and good old fashioned fascism. And why is nobody looking at this? There have been numerous authors who have attempted to predict what the "American" brand of fascism would look like going back to the 30's. While most of these were American communists (fascism's 'natural enemy'), many were pragmatic moderates concerned for democracy. Look at media critic George Seldes who published 'In Fact' during the 40's. He invented the entire industry of media criticism and fact checking news sources to bring to light biased reporting.
Many people were worried about corporate America's designs on democracy, such as their plot against Roosevelt. From "The Nazi Hydra In Fascist America":In 1934 Irenee du Pont and William Knudsen, the president of General Motors along with friends of the Morgan Bank and others set into motion a plot to overthrow FDR. They provided three million in funding for an army of terrorists that was modeled after the French fascist group, Croix de Feu.4 The objective of the plot was to either force Roosevelt to take orders from this group of industrialists as part of a fascist style government or to execute him if he chose not to cooperate.
The plotters selected General Smedley Butler, a WWI hero to head the plot. Butler was overtly opposed to fascism and had spoken out denouncing Mussolini as a murderer and thug in 1931. The Italian government demanded an apology and President Hoover complied along with placing Butler under arrest for court-martial proceedings. Roosevelt then governor of New York spoke out against the charges against Butler. Roosevelt had been responsible for awarding Butler's Second Medal of Honor for his service in Haiti. President Hoover then backed down and Butler received a mild reprimand for refusing to retract his words.The Republican Party was infiltrated by Nazi's during the 30's, on October 22, 1936, the New York Post reported:
To win votes for Landon and Bleakley, the Republican State Committee is employing on its payroll a staff of propagandists identified with local Nazi organizations, the Post learned today.
This was backed up by a report on the 30th in the New York World-Telegram stating:
The Republican Party had been sponsoring radio broadcasts by American Nazis to win German votes, it was disclosed today. One of the recent speakers was Dr. Ignatz T. Griebl a national Nazi leader and pronounced anti-Semitic
The pre-WWII fascist designs of the Republican Party have transformed into a message that claims anyone who doesn't conform to their model of what American life is supposed to be is an enemy of America. Rather than the old heirarchy of race and nationality, it's a new one of wealth and productivity above all else. The Nazi's didn't sell an unpalatable message to the German people, the Republicans aren't about to try and sell their unappetizing designs to Americans.
Dig through history, look at the patterns and relationships, the small tweaks don't hide the same old plan. The idea is to create a new heirarchy to lawfully subjugate those who don't belong. Why SF writers should critique SF movie directorsI'm reading comments that suggest Brin is wrong in criticising Lucas, for reasons that include "Brin must be jealous" (well, yes, *I'd* like 40 billion dollars- it doesn't mean I can't say bad things about Microsoft) or that it is rude for artists to criticise others in their field. I think Lucas needs to hear what Brin or other SF writers think of his work, and I'd argue that Brin and Lucas aren't in the same field at all...comparing the two:
Brin- science fiction writer, where writers:
- must be familiar with current SF literature and scientific developments of the past 40 years.
- Often send drafts out to other writers / scientists (many other SF writers are both- Benford, Vinge, Forward...) for criticism before the final version.
- go to conventions where discussions and panels cover recent discoveries in science, technology and medicine.
- know about and read the bleeding edge writers (because of things like the Nebula and Hugo Awards (read nominees here)) like modern space opera writer Clute, makes up his own plausible-sounding mathematical systems Greg Egan, Alistair Reynolds and, writing from the other side of the singularity, Charlie Stross.
Lucas- science fiction (though he won't admit it) movie / TV director, where directors:
- can get away with plots and backstory that were already old 30 years ago in the SF literature
- Don't want to admit to being SF, so don't read or seek criticism from other SF writers. (Anecdotal evidence- they rarely participate in regular SF conventions (instead going to Media Cons) and even more rarely hang out in the audience, listening and learning.) Leads to situations like Whelon thinking Firefly is original because it is gritty and doesn't have phasers.
- Aren't aware of the state of the art in scientifically consistent (even if not plausible) technobabble. Apparently not aware of the evil overlord's rules and other long-known lists of cliches to avoid.
- Don't have any idea about recent SF writers- the critics don't either, and so the movie/TV show will always be compared to one of "Wells, Verne, Bradbury, Star Trek, Star Wars, Bladerunner (or rarely PKDick) and The Matrix," all nice but they could use some higher standards. Leads to critics calling movies like Harris's Fatherland ("ohhhh, what if Hitler *won* WWII?") original, because they don't know that the SF subfield of alternate history is decades old.
But I doubt Lucas will ever hear Brin: Lucas seems to have surrounded himself with yesmen, who rarely pass on negative articles. (Plus, for him to listen would be evidence that his work and inspiration came in part from SF and the space opera of his youth.)

Regarding the letter to the Family Research Council--I honestly wish you the best of luck there.
I also think you will probably have better luck having an in-depth conversation on the merits of Red Hat versus Slackware with the walls of your home than convince the Family Research Council of the fact the software is flawed and even blocks partisan material.
This is largely because the Family Research Council would consider this a feature and not a bug.
For those who aren't aware--the Family Research Council is, essentially, the lobbying arm of a group called Focus on the Family. FoF is probably the largest Religious Reich organisation in the US now (yes, even bigger than the Christian Coalition) and basically split off Family Research Council some years back in order to preserve their tax-exempt status. (As an aside, often state FoF branches will operate under different names to hide their affiliation with FoF.)
To be perfectly blunt, FoF and its affiliates have an agenda--to basically get as many raving fundamentalists in office as possible and to get the fundamentalist vote out, in hopes of getting enough people in office to essentially turn the United States into a fundamentalist theocracy. If you want to get a good idea about the "face" politics they support, just look at the political platform of (recently dropped out) presidential candidate Gary Bauer--this is the guy who founded Family Research Council when it was split off of FoF.
To these folks, pushing censorware is just another way of them "saving" us--whether or not we particularly want to be "saved" or not--and making the US into a "nice Christian nation again". (Many of these folks, by the way, also subscribe to "Christian Reconstructionism"--that is, the canard that the Founding Fathers actually meant the US to be a theocracy.) This is also why they tend to run "stealth" candidates (candidates who do not reveal their links to Religious Reich groups until elected) specifically to things like school boards--they want to get them young so they can indoctrinate them young, because they know that if they're gotten young they likely won't walk away. (This is also why they push homeschooling a lot, by the way, as well as vouchers for private schools--it's been the actual stated goal of many Religious Reich groups to get the school system totally dismantled so that kids are forced to go to sectarian schools.)
FoF's president, Bob Dobson, also makes a rather lucrative career selling books on "disciplining your kids"--usually involving a mix of censorship, forcing God down their throats, and liberal amounts of spanking the kids (part of the reason corporal punishment is NOT illegal in the US--or, for that matter, why the US is the only nation besides Somalia which has still not ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child--is because fundamentalist groups like FRC lobby heavily against such laws, claiming that it'll take away their right to "spare the rod and spoil the child" or to "raise their kids as they see fit". In some cases where it has crossed the line into child abuse, some fundies have even argued in court that the state prohibiting them from beating the living hell out of their kids is a violation of their First Amendment rights to religion and that beating the hell out of their kids is actually a duty of their religion).
I happen to be a walkaway from what may be described as a "bible-based cult", and I can say that a fair percentage of the harder-core membership of many (if not most) Religious Reich groups in the US happen to be from churches that use coercive tactics on their membership. In other words, the ones who are doing the lobbying are more than likely brainwashed, they have probably already mentally defined anyone who isn't on their side and who dares to tell them about "flaws" in the software is directly in league with Satan (most Religious Reich groups, and most bible-based cults, DO have a very "us-versus-them" attitude--many Bible-based cults even go to the point of "deliverance ministry" (even your doubts are caused by demons, and the only cure is to "pray them out" or get an exorcism...rather like some of the nastier mind-control techniques in Scientology, actually)...). It is going to take a considerably larger clue-by-four than that to make them change their minds.
The FRC has a rather long record of lobbying not just for censorship, but for the entire Religious Reich platform. On occasion, this has even gone to slandering folks who speak against them...don't be surprised if you find possibly much of the town turned against you (I've read in previous reports that the town in general is quite conservative and beholden to the Religious Reich).
