Re:Why?
"At a video game company?"
So, they fill the storage closet with what, exactly? They don't use keyboards at video game companies?
Do you fart out your scripts in Morse code?
"My supervisor had to buy a replacement and a few spare keyboards on his lunch break."
Then why didn't you ask for one?
"No clue. Why?"
Oh, I don't know:
https://www.staples.com/Staple...
Supports up to 250 lbs based on 5-10 hours of use per day
Unless they buy your office furniture from a veterinarian?
"I do my job."
Which apparently consists of wasting time on Slashdot, shitposting all day long, and not being able to figure out how to borrow a keyboard from a coworker.
Oh, sorry, they confined you to solitary, so that would require getting up (15 calories), lumbering over to the elevator (45 calories), catching your breath from that run (10 calories), and asking someone else for help. Which your ego won't allow.

Pulling it from history and refreshing also work fine. You probably have some crap extension screwing it up.

Re:Ob
This one came up first when I googled shredders. http://www.staples.com/InfoGua... But it wouldn't let me link to a specific product, just a list. Just picked it out of the history and now it's showing a printer.
Just refreshed it & it's showing
{"pricing":{"id":"StaplesUSCAS/en-US/1/CL167883/1781826","listPrice":99.99,"finalPrice":59.99,"savings":0,"nowPrice":0,"instantSavings":40
... and much more of the same. -
Re:Notebook and Pen?
You can buy Composition Notebooks by the gross, those are very popular around here. Plus they offer the integrity of not being able to remove pages if that's your cup of tea.
If you want something more customizable, there's some like the Arc system from Staples. This is a bit nicer than your generic 3 ring binder, and you can easily move pages around and add dividers and do all sort of other OCD stuff with it, so it's nice as a work book, and also for more permanent storage.

Dot Matrix
Old technology is the best technology:
http://www.staples.com/Dot-Matrix-Printers/cat_CL40302 -
No. Just don't use it.I realize it's a great
/. tradition to completely ignore the original question and try to dance around it with alternatives, but just ignoring it is not an option. For example don't user the remote control that came with it, because it has dedicated app buttons that will take 30seconds to fail to launch netflix for you, or worse, offer to walk your wife through wi-fi setup. So you need another remote too. And since they are special your universal remote won't work out of the box, so you'll need to to button to button remapping to get that to work.
You know what would be even better than turning wi-fi off? Not having it at all...kinda of like what the OP asks for.
To answer the OP's question you can buy commercial TV's (like hotel rooms or restaurants buy for their active menus) and they have no smart features. They are widely available at commerical type stores. Lg also makes them up to 65" (we have some installed here). Big, dumb panel. Here is their site:

TVs with VGA in; Bluetooth thumb keyboard
It's also a lot more expensive than these $99 streamers.
Not if you already own it, which makes it $0.
An older or cheaper PC might not even have the HDMI output you need for connecting to a typical flat-panel TV.
Because HDMI inherited its signaling from DVI-D, any cheap DVI-D to HDMI cable from Monoprice will work, so long as your TV has an analog audio input on one of its HDMI inputs. (Mine does.) And the vast majority of flat-panel TVs that I've seen have a DE15 jack for VGA video. I haven't seen a PC since 1990 that doesn't have a VGA, DVI, or HDMI out.
And a standard Windows PC is set up with a user interface that is designed to be used with a keyboard and mouse at close range
Not since Windows 8. There's a reason for those Metro tiles that it inherited from the November 2011 update to Xbox 360 Dashboard. Hairyfeet might also recommend a Bluetooth remote with a trackball and a cell-phone-style QWERTY keyboard.

Casio fx-300MS
I'm a big fan of the Casio fx-300 series. These days I'm using the fx-300MS, purchased at Staples, etc., for $10. http://www.staples.com/Casio-FX-300MS-Plus-Scientific-Calculator/product_403857 It's fine for scientific and engineering calculations, and although I'd prefer a programmable calculator, those aren't allowed for exams, and therefore aren't widely sold in stores. I have enough of the fx-300s around so there's always one at hand wherever I am, at home, at work, or at the bench. They must also be good enough for my scientific friends as well, because often when I'm in someone else's lab I see one lying around, and think I forgot and left my own there, only to discover, no, it's not mine.

In Other News...
Staples has reversed its recent decision to sell 3-D printers. To remain above reproach, the company will also be cancelling orders for some product lines.

Re:Still Carry a Palm
Amen to that. I've got a M515; unfortunately, its replacement battery is starting to die off too, so I'm afraid this time it really is the end.
Why not replace it again? These are just three of the places I found with a simple "m515 replacement battery" query to google. I did mine a few years ago and it wasn't hard.

Re:Uniball Vision Micro
+1
I use the uniball micro .2mm found here: http://www.staples.com/uni-ball-Roller-Pens-Micro-Point-Black-Dozen/product_132522
Staples' site says they're .5mm but they aren't -- if you go to the store you can see they're .2mm. They write well, no smudging (I'm left handed) and great detail for diagrams and such. Since their tips are like little razors don't expect them to write on things that aren't well padded paper -- they'll shred through newspaper, napkins, etc. -
Re:$575? Seriously?
I can believe that, take something as simple as the iPad Smart Cover... it's a very simple folding cover with a couple magnets, yet they want $40/70 for that, buying an extra official cable or charger is also hilariously expensive. Or just look up the prices on the 16/32/64 GB versions of an iPad and compare with the hardware costs, you don't pay $100 for another 16GB anywhere but Apple. Nor to you pay $130 to add a 3G/4G connection, you get complete 3G/4G routers for less than $100. Personally I bought the iPad 16GB wifi-only for $399 recently and I think it was worth it for the excellent display, but all my accessories are 3rd party. Compared to what I've seen with friends that's where they rake in the big bucks.
So, I guess it's just an accident that no one can sell a tablet with equivalent features to an iPad (I notice you bought one, too) for less than an iPad? Apple must really be gouging, then!
Oh, and it's a newsflash that companies make insane profits on "accessories"? How many HP laptops come with a power supply that will cost $70 to replace from HP? My old Nokia phone's car charger cost me $30 from the AT&T store, just because Nokia used a proprietary connector. Yet there weren't hand-wringing Slashdot articles complaining about those insane profits...
I, too, use third-party Chinese junk accessories whenever possible; but don't single-out Apple for doing what every single manufacturer does with "Accessory" sales. -

Re:Crazy....
I got new ISP service in August. I got a router with it. This router does not do IPv6. In August. 2010.
As a gift I got the $35 WGR614NA. I slaved it to my ipv6-compliant router but it failed to forward v6 traffic --in September 2010. We're stuck with lots of tech that just will not get phased out because it is cheap to bundle and expensive to upgrade... like IE6. Perhaps your ISP does servr v6 but your router itself is "broken"? Borrow a known good one like an Apple airports and see if v6 works.
After years, I've concluded that buying v6 consumer routers is hard. NONE say "ipv6-ready!!11oneone" on the box. Only geeks do web searches leading to appropriate forum threads before buying a hardware. WPA and WPA2, and N support are the only features the big players care about highlighting, and v6 is hidden --they most consider it a niche.
"firmware upgradable to 802.11n final" has been an undelivered promise a whole year since the 802.11n standard was finalized. Worse, router boxes still say "802.11n draft standard" or deviously omit the word "final." We need to start posting all non-compliant, backward-ass routers, so google searches help people avoid these "incomplete" product lines.

This is stupid
Adults need fancy chairs because they've abused their bodies over time and their bodies can't adapt as quickly. Children are extremely adaptable and their plasticity should enable them to sit on rocks. Therefore, it is merely a cost issue. Since children tend to stick gum under desks, carve into their tops, and bowl them all over the place, they needn't be built to last the test of time. They need to be robust enough to tolerate a decent about of abuse and then get replaced in a few years.
If you're now thinking that better chairs would prevent that body abuse in adults, I'd argue that you're misguided there, too. It's a posture and ergonomics issue more than anything else.
Disclaimer: I don't subscribe to the need for $700 chairs. My Staples Berwell Luxura Task Chair was $90 and is, in many ways, just as comfortable (though not as adjustable) as chairs that cost 2-5 times as much. It does everything I need it to do. If it falls apart or is destroyed, I'll buy another. I've been in a lot of fancy offices and labs with a lot of really nice (and expensive) chairs. The Berwell isn't as nice, but it's 90% of the way there and simply precludes any reason for me to consider something over the $100 price point.

Cheapo *scientific* calculators for all
By way of introduction: I teach intro physics in a similar environment. To add to the difficulty, our campus's honor code requires professors to give unproctored exams, so I can't watch them, but that doesn't stop them from trying to cheat.
Anyone who says "design better tests" isn't paying attention to the possibilities of mobile technology. It's easy with a modern smartphone to photograph each page of the exam sheet, send it to a paid test-taker, and have them send you back an image of their solution, in enough time and in enough detail to ace the test, and in a way which is undetectable unless you're literally right over the student's shoulder.
The only solution is an outright ban on uncontrolled technology. Your idea of buying 30 simple 4-function calculators is a good one, but any good intro physics class will require trigonometry, square roots, etc.
I say, have your department buy thirty cheap *scientific* calculators -- for example, the TI-30xa costs like $10 each. Tell your students they're welcome to familiarize themselves with this type of calculator before the test: they may choose to use them for homework problems as well: that way lack of adaptability will be no excuse.
As for dictionaries: they still make those on paper. So long as you warn students about these rules at the start of term, rather than surprising them a day before the exam, they should be willing to adjust.

Re:Pulse Pen
you don't have to buy their $5 notebooks to use their pen. You can print your own smart paper.
$5 buys you 100 pages, which is 5 cents a sheet. That's actually not too bad on a cost per page basis. Even if you consider the ink and printer as free, when you factor in your time to print 100 pages, let alone bind them somehow, I'd much rather pay $5. Plus, there are regular 100 page pads that are more expensive: http://www.staples.com/Mead-Five-Star-8-1-2-x-11-1-Subject-Notebook-Each/product_503123?cmArea=sku_pd_box1

How hard can it be???
O. M. G.
How fucking hard can it be to create a simple, secure voting machine?
Start with this: http://www.staples.com/Amplivox-Aluminum-Truss-Lectern/product_683093?cmArea=SEARCH
Weld a steel box under it, lock one of these in it: http://www.logicsupply.com/categories/mainboards/nano_itx
A simple touchscreen on the top: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824103028
A 2-ply receipt printer: http://www.posmicro.com/RECPRINTERS/SAMSUNG_PRINTERS/samsung_srp_270_receipt_printers.htm (Also locked in a box, with an extra-large roll of paper)
Then, have a secure server in a cage in the corner of the room. Have the voting terminals boot over network from the server. All they need to run is a simple interface that shows the names of the candidates and allows you to touch to select them. Then it prints a receipt for you, keeping the other copy internally.
Sure, there are details to iron out, but come on, it can't be that hard.
-
Re:How much is your time worth
You're doing it wrong.
When I'm doing networking for clients, it is between a central patch panel and a wallplate. From there, the right way to do it is with a relatively short patch cord to the networked device or the switch or whatever.
Funnily enough, I have no particular love for Belkin's products. The only good thing about them is that they're everywhere, and therefore are easy to find. But they're expensive and, in my experience, no better than other (often much, much cheaper) products.
Here's a 10 foot snagless Belkin Cat5e cable from Staples for $6.49. Meanwhile, Deep Surplus has a very very similar cable for $1.72 with a 90-day no-restocking-fee return policy. At the high end, Black Box sells cables which are even more expensive than Belkin, and are guaranteed against everything forever.
But it's not clear to me, in my experience, that either Belkin or Black Box have common cables which are substantially better than the stuff at Deep Surplus. They're all assembled by machine, they're all tested by machine, and I'll wager that in all the wire itself is purchased from whatever supplier is cheapest this week. And if I'm only paying a third as much for them, ala Deep Surplus, I can afford to guarantee them myself.

Re:SDTV output
Is HDMI okay?
If so, then how about Staples? See the specs at the eMachines website since Staples doesn't make the port info clear.
Maybe you want both DVI and HDMI in place of your beloved S-Video? No problem. Walmart has the Dell Studio Hybrid. They stock it right in the store in some locations. It can also be shipped from the website to your address or shipped for free to any store when purchased on the website with their site-to-store option.
-
Re:Really?
I saw a 7' Cat 5e cable for $30 at my local Staples last week... Luckily I didn't buy it in the store! When I got home I found I could buy it for HALF that price online. I think next time, though, I'll splurge on the Monster gold-plated Ethernet cables instead.

Milk Crate
I suggest a milk crate. If you don't want to go the milk crate route, a file storage crate will work really well also.
Put the power strip in an out of the way corner. Plug in all the pluggables. Flip the crate over, and put it over the power strip. Feed the ends out of the crate. Put a fancy covering or something on top.
This way, the power strips are pretty much out of sight. You can put things on top of the crate while they're charging.

Staples Soul
http://www.staples.com/sbd/content/about/soul/recycling.html
Staples offers in-store recycling for tech trash. There's a ten dollar charge for bigger stuff like monitors, printers, and PC's, but smaller stuff like keyboards, mice, and speakers are free. You'd be surprised at what getting rid of just the old keyboards and speakers did for my office. They also take only cell phones, pagers, cell phone batteries, etc. I've dropped off a few phones, sans SIM card of course.
Staples also has an ink and toner recycling program. It's gotten to be more of a pain in the ass lately, but it's still worthwhile. If you bring in an original HP, Dell, or Lexmark ink or toner cartridge, you get a $3.00 credit on you staples rewards card. Once you get at least $10.00 worth of rewards, you get a check in the mail.
You can only drop them off three at a time, but last month I able to turn our collection of used toner into $30+ dollar rewards check that I used on some supplies for non-profit I volunteer for.

Best... chair...... EVER....
My wife, who has major back problems, picked this chair out a couple of years ago at Staples.
It's not exactly your $400 aero-whatever but is REALLY comfortable, and well worth it for $180. When I started working from home regularly, I stole it from her and can say definitively that 8 hour coding days in it are no problem. -
Re:telephone number
Not that you could get a fax machine without actually working in an office... oh wait you can get one for under $100.00 if you wanted to.
-
Staples sells lots of non-HP cartridges
If HP paid Staples $100 million, they sure didn't get their money's worth. Staples sells a wide range of cartridge refills for non-HP printers. That includes cartridges that work with Dell printers, providing an alternative to ordering online via Dell - which is interesting since Staples is now selling Dell computers in their stores.

Re:Continuous InkAhh... good ol' solid ink printing... Xerox Phaser 8400. We use this one at the $large_retail_store I work at for printing all of the price tags and other sale related things (full page ads, web pages, etc). Think about 500 pages a day.
I don't have a good estimate on the price per print, [read: I'm tired and don't want to do the math] but the site says a typical box of six sticks of black ink will give you about 6,800 pages for $104.99. Slightly more expensive than your typical toner printer...
If I get into a real pro vs. con session, this post will likely be modded down because some bastard thinks it's spam. I just happen to like the printer.
Funny... my store's website has a much higher price than Xerox for the same ink...
