Re:And for good reason
Here's some background for you: State Rep. Sally Kern files three bills targeting gays"
rejecting AP History for speeches like "the sermon known as"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God""
OK Reps using their authority in attempting to ban "anti-Biblical plays"
The 10 Commandments monument was directly against the OK Constitution, so now their attempting to change it. Highly ironic seeing the divorce rate of many of their members.
Counter this with our courts saying Forced sodomy isn't illegal if she's unconscious.
Don't want to get raped by a OK cop? Well, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Captain George Brown main suggestion is First and foremost: Do your part, and do what it takes to obey the traffic laws and not get stopped
Don't forget the attempt to mandate Creationism being taught in public schools,
This is just the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure someone who really wants to could find far more examples, these are just the more recent ones. These attempted laws are quite diversion, and are going down the path of ISIS. -

Oklahoma unemployment site
This cracks me up, since the unemployment claims website says "This site is compatible with the Internet Explorer browser versions 5-9 only". Makes me wonder what they are running under the hood, and just how vulnerable the system is. Netcraft says IIS 6.0 on win2k3.

Re:interesting
I listened to the NPR piece by Diane Rehm and it is SOOOO horribly biased. She only asks the one not very official spokesperson for fracking loaded questions and then cuts him off and lets the director of GasLand (and sequel) pretty much give a sales pitch on his movie. I'm not saying there aren't environmental consequences from fracking, but when the director of the documentary is saying the EPA, USGS, and other government studies showing the fracking isn't to blame can't be believed, then who DO you believe?
http://www.iogcc.state.ok.us/Websites/iogcc/Images/2009StateRegulatoryStatementsonHydraulic%20Fracturing.pdf
http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=3489Now I'm not saying oil and gas extraction can't pollute the water supply. It can and frequently does. But even if there is contamination around fracking sites, it isn't due to the fracking itself, but poor environmental controls in the supporting operation. The key here is not to fight fracking, but to fight to keep all the processes associated with well drilling within the rules of existing environmental regulations.
Blaming fracking for well contamination is equivalent to blaming GM because your gas tank leaks. (Obligatory Slashdot car analogy)

Re:Depends on...
There's certainly something in what you say. This map shows Louisiana and Oklahoma with more prisoners per capita than any other states, and half of Oklahoma's private prisons have no oklahomans in them.. However, New York and Illinois have outlawed them, but both are almost in the middle (slightly lower than 50th percentile) of the list of incarcerations per capita (see map).
Personally, I don't think private prisons should exist.

Less than impressive...
I mean, if you want a "Spaceport", why not go to where the facilities are the best? The Okla. Spaceport in Burns Flat has longer, wider runways (13,503' x 300' w/1000 overruns versus only 10,000' x 200'), better access to major transportation and major population centers, 50,000 square foot manufacturing facility with loading docks adjacent to main line rail spur, and a golf course on site. BTW, it's where Armadillo Aerospace goes to play

Re:Just as much right?
Oooh, can I play jailhouse lawyer too?
Let's start with links. You opened with Wikipedia; I'll see your Wikipedia and raise you Oklahoma's Legislative Service Bureau, http://www.lsb.state.ok.us/. Click the nifty underlined bit and it'll take you to the text of the entire body of Oklahoma statutes (I picked Oklahoma because it's a noted hotbed of tornado activity). "Reckless endangerment," by name or concept, didn't exist under Title 21, Crimes and Punishments, but Title 47, Motor Vehicles, contains "reckless driving:"
47 11 901. Reckless driving.
A. It shall be deemed reckless driving for any person to drive a motor vehicle in a careless or wanton manner without regard for the safety of persons or property or in violation of the conditions outlined in Section 11 801 of this title.
B. Every person convicted of reckless driving shall be punished upon a first conviction by imprisonment for a period of not less than five (5) days nor more than ninety (90) days, or by a fine of not less than One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) nor more than Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00), or by both such fine and imprisonment; on a second or subsequent conviction, punishment shall be imprisonment for not less than ten (10) days nor more than six (6) months, or by a fine of not less than One Hundred Fifty Dollars ($150.00) nor more than One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00), or by both such fine and imprisonment. Now, that makes true reckless driving a misdemeanor. However, you're arguing that driving in a place where one has every legal right to be becomes reckless driving simply because of inclement weather. The courts disagree. To wit:
- Athey v. Bingham, 823 P.2d 347 (Okla. 1991). "Snow and sleet were falling on the ice-covered road. . . . The fact that a motor vehicle collision occurred does not necessarily raise the presumption that the defendant was following too closely, driving too fast to bring the car to a stop, or driving too fast for highway conditions." The Court did not even consider the idea that the driver shouldn't have been out in the weather at all.
- Wade v. Reimer, 359 P.2d 1071 (Okla. 1961). "Shortly after they left [the city of] Yale it started raining hard and puddles of water began to accumulate on the surface of the highway. Defendant, driving at a speed estimated variously from 50 to 65 miles per hour, steered the vehicle so as to avoid these puddles. As they approached a point approximately 10 miles west of Yale, the two right wheels of the pick-up suddenly came off the pavement to the right shoulder of the road. The vehicle slid ‘sideways' back across the entire concrete width of the highway and then through the adjoining bar ditch crashing into a tree. . . . Before a driver may be found guilty of [reckless driving], the triers must necessarily conclude first that his actions amounted to ordinary common law negligence." The court held that even a guilty plea to reckless driving does not establish negligence per se; the jury still has to decide whether the specific actions were negligent. The jury did not find the defendant negligent. Again, the idea that "you shouldn't have been out in this weather" was never even considered, let alone seriously entertained by the Court.
- Green v. Thompson, 344 P.2d 272 (Okla. 1959). Holding that the fact that an accident occurred does not necessarily mean anybody was negligent; citations to Taylor v. Ray, 56 P.2d 376 (Okla 1936) and National Tank Co. v. Scott, 130 P.2d 316 (Okla. 1942) and Kraft Foods Co. v. Chadwell, 249 P.2d 1002 (Okla. 1952), all of which also held that the mere fact of an accident doesn't prove negligence or recklessness.
So, if you'll bother to read the provided cases, I think you'll find that chasing tornadoes does not ipso factor constitute "reckless endangerment" (or even the actual crime of reckless driving), nor the tort of negligence. The specific circumstances of the case may give rise to an action in either, but it's not "the literal definition."
Sorry to burst your bubble.

Re:It's Worse Than You think!
I've been hearing this thrown around a lot lately...where exactly are these 'for-profit prisons' and jails?
Here is a map. It doesn't show the actual locations, but it gives number and percentage of prisoners in private prisons by state.

Re:Three questions.
Thanks. I should have said the word "Fluorescent".
Here is a link about Mercury contained in FLUORESCENT lights: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_fluorescent_lamp#Environmental_issues
When anyone must rely on the comparison between the "benefits" of a particular "better" lighting source over the Toxic Heavy Metals (Mercury) it releases into the environment and to further claim that it is "better" because a coal-fired electric-power plant's Mercury exhaust releases over the bulb's lifetime are "less".
Hell, there is an alert on eating Mercury contaminated fish in my state: http://www.deq.state.ok.us/factsheets/land/fishmerc.pdf (PDF Warning)
Gimme a break. I need to put on some taller boots...
LEDs are the ONLY environmental alternative and they blow away incandescent and fluorescent lighting all of the environmental issues. (Plus they last MUCH longer than any other single current lighting technology). Please read on: http://www.creelighting.com/products.htm
NOTE: CO2 is reabsorbed into the environment and therefore it is *removed* by nature, Mercury is in the water and food and soil nearly forever (on human time scales) and can only be *diluted*. -

Re:Who mod'ed that "troll"?
One would think that people would oppose it (text of the bill (RTF document)). But... It has passed, or is under consideration, in other states. Microsoft is not the sole originator, but a group called the American Legislative Exchange Council. It supposedly "...advances the Jeffersonian principles of free markets, limited government, federalism and individual liberty...", but actually seems more interested in making corporate policy into state law.
The Microsoft campaign contributions mentioned in the article (a slightly more readable version) are also worth noting. -
Re:Ignoring the Facts: defining "authoritarian"
The very fact that the time of the event is chosen by the criminal and not you is what makes the difference. He knows that trouble is about to happen, because he is the one initiating it. You don't. And in the absence of "safer targets"--which is what you will have if everyone is armed--the criminals will gear up, as they do in L.A. when they fight each other.
I wouldn't brag about the crime rates in Texas, by the way. Violent crime in Texas is one of the highest of any State (6th), and in fact, one of the highest in the Western World. Drops in the crime rate have happened in all states, due to changes in demographics, as the number of young males ages 17 to 30 have declined as a percentage of the population. This is not because of gun policy, which has not really changed in Texas. The consistently high rate of violent crime is more indicative of the results of the gun policy there. -
Why bother building a spaceport?
A spaceport already exists today in Oklahoma.

Re:Ok I'll bite...
Well, if risk of death is a good reason to avoid things, perhaps we should totally ban cars from any usage. They kill about 40,000 people a year down south in the States. (a random googled reference, find your own if you doubt the number)
Obviously caution is warrented in any such project, but let's not get worked up over some dock workers who -might- be at risk if a major catastrophe occurred. Hell, they would have been killed the next week in an auto accident anyways.

Oh, and before I'm trolled -1 for totally ignoring other countries, I did consult the World Heath Organization web site.
Worldwide, according to WHO, 8000 people die of AIDS every day. That's 2.9 million people (2,920,000). That's.
Nearly 1 million people die of hearth diseases in the US alone. Yearly. -
live crash test dummies
Apparently there was a program in Germany where, if you were convicted of a DUI and were facing some heavy jail time, you could volunteer to be a crash-test dummy and reduce your sentence. Not semi vs. volkswagen tests, but still without a seatbelt. A teacher friend of mine would show these films to his physics class.

Re:Possible dangers of cell phone use
Last friday I read in other news that a cell phone possibly ignited a flash explosion of gas vapors
But there's a huge difference between what happened in that story, and what happens at your local gas station.
For one thing, it wasn't a gas station, but a Texas oil well where the explosion occurred. Oilfield work is inherently dangerous, and subject to freak accidents like this one, where gas pressure blew a plug into some poor guy's head.
Add to that the location. Here in Texas, every pump has a stupid "NO CELLPHONES" sticker on it. So everyone thinks that cellphones cause explosions, despite zero evidence. Now, in the article, it says "It is believed that either the cell phone or static electricity when the person reached to pick up or open the cell phone caused the ignition of the gas in the area." The cell phone got the headline, but I doubt it was to blame.
Also, note that "gas vapors... had accumulated in a low-lying area." That's a recipe for disaster, since natural gas is heavier than air.
All in all, I feel much better than I did before about using my cell phone at the gas station, and I'm still looking for any evidence an explosion was actually caused by a cell phone. Note, though, that POTS phones *do* spark! -

Re:Why?
Are you saying that, for instance, Slashdot's list of addresses would be illegal if they were burned to CD? There are a lot of perfectly legitimate, completely non-spam-related uses for a bunch of email addresses. IIRC, 'substantial, non-infringing use' applies to copyright violation and infringement and P2P networking instead of people's right to privacy anyway.
The only way I could see a government being able to justify prosecution of someone based on possession of one of these CDs is if they definitely had caught them distributing spam and had passed this law to tack other charges on just to make it more painful to get caught. This has been done before - for instance, in Oklahoma, it is illegal to sell drugs without a tax stamp. I don't think they actually expect anyone to actually purchase these stamps - it's just used to nail a dealer for tax evasion in addition to drug dealing. -

State Do No Call List
Oklahoma has their own Do Not Call list that has been around since sometime in 2002. One theory is that this is another State Gov. vs. Fegeral Gov. thing. Sort of like female nude mud wrestling, do any of us really care who wins? One thing I find a bit bassakwords is on the Oklahoma state webpage, it states, "Any registrations on the Attorney General's Web site prior to June 1, 2003 have already been added to the National list, but those after that date must register numbers at both Web sites." I'm wondering if this is another New York Time-ish "I'll just make up this news story because it sounds better" sort of thing?

He's safe in Oklahoma
This judge is probably safe working here in Oklahoma. A few months before the national do not call registry was implemented, Oklahoma implemented their own state registry. So, the judge is surrounded by a state full of people that this decision won't affect.

The Davis firearms museumThe J. M. Davis firearms museum, in Claremore, Oklahoma.
I remember going there when I was about 10, and if I ever get back to Oklahoma, I'm stopping there. Well worth a long drive, if you're interested in guns, old guns, really old guns, knives, swords, Damascus swords, Oklahoma history, Oklahoma Indians, and so on. It is a private museum, so doesn't have the breadth or trendiness of the Smithsonian, but if you're interested in what they have on hand, those are big advantages.
Also, where ever you go in the middle of the country, try to stop in small university towns. You'll find cheap food, cheap beer, good libraries, good coffee, specialty stores with real Chinese and Indian foods, which carry brands from Taiwan and India, concerts (classical, jazz, modern noise) and generally everything which makes life good. You'll also find a lot of corn fed idiots who are drinking their way to a degree and a good job, but they're largely harmless.

Not that I don't see your point, I think things have gone overboard in a lot of different ways, but I can understand the paranoia...although you wouldn't believe it if you visited OKC (at least ~5 years ago) - the Social Security offices were moved into a dead shopping mall, with, I think one or maybe two security guards, and no searching going on that I noticed.
Now, don't anyone get any ideas about bombing the mall just because AOL is there, there are a lot of still-traumatized employees working there... -
Re:what really irritates me...
The people of Oklahoma are as responsible as the government since they elected them. If you have an issue with the way your government is run, why don't you get involved in some way instead of whining about how the government sucks? He is the Oklahoma legislature. If you have issue with the people of Oklahoma, you can move somewhere else. This is the beauty of a free and democratic country.

Re:My contradictory opinionLonger prison sentences and/or implementation of the death penalty have not been shown to decrease the overall crime rate. Actually, according to certain studies the overall crime is increasing DUE to the increased prison population. Furhtermore, the incarseration of large number of people has some other adverse effects.
If criminal behavior would just be a inborn attribute in certain people, then just locking those "disfunctional" people up in prisons certainly would stop crime alltogether. However, criminal behavior is much more complicated issue which is affected by many internal and external factors and therefore imprisonment's effects on the crime rate are much more complex that you obviously would like to think.

Re:The pipe could be big enough
I'd imagine that around here (Tornado Alley, Oklahoma), that would qualify as a tornado shelter... Having a Hobbit Hole in the backyard would probably increase the property value, too
:)
Thanks to the recent passage of State question 696, your first 100 square feet would be exempt from property tax too. :-)
Yup, we are serious about our storm shelters here in Oklahoma. My grandfather's one saved his life back in the 70's. The tornado pulled the whole house down over it. He had spoons stuck inside trees and the whole 9 yards...
My dad has a bit of rual land with a nice hill on it to build into. I'd love to build a hobbit-style house into it. But I doubt 12-foot pipe would be able to provide enough room for a family of 5 (not counting pets). -
Re:Something about the term...Actually Oklahoma has been a high tech place for a long time (lots of OIL money in the "old" days).
- A lot of flight simulators (the kind that real airline pilots use for training) were developed in Tulsa.
- Hard drives were made in OKC (until labor priced it self out of business).
- Most of the video feeds for football games are controlled in Tulsa.
- TV guide is in Tulsa.
- yada yada with more examples.
Arts is big too and not just C&W
- (Reba, Garth).
- Mozart is big in Bartlesville(me).
- Kristin Chenoweth
- Troy Aikman
- Gene Autry
- Johnny Bench
- Lon Chaney, Jr
- Walter Cronkite
- Paul Harvey
- Mickey Mantle

Do you live in Oklahoma?
If so, then go here to be placed on the state's new do-not-call list.

armadillo
Carmack's Armadillo Aerospace (god, I'd love to go work for them
:) tried to launch in Texas but couldn't get approval. They had to drive 6 hours to Oklahoma which is launch-friendly (if you give manufacturing preference to OK companies). There are many places that are offering alternative launch locations to NASA, but it's still tough to get approval.

Marketing scam for sanitizing wipes
Most of the bacteria in the oil and sweat on your fingertips are perfectly benign; other people are covered in bacteria, but they are not septic. You can touch them. Even if they are all sweaty....
The bacteria in someone's other excretions - especially saliva, feces and the delightful sexual juices - are potentially infectious. Blood is more likely to contain viruses (since blood borne bacteria generally kill you stone dead). Unless the other person has a staph infection on their fingertips, the bacteria on their keyboard are not. Even the infectious stuff in snot, which often ends up on people's fingertips, is also (usually) viral and, in any case, generally killed by being dried out.
The fact is - most of the organisms that remain infectious after being dried out live in your scat.
Whatever the bacteria count on a desk, I'd recommend eating off of one over eating off a toilet, which is likely to harbor some small number of bacteria (or other parasites) that favor the human digestive tract.
This is not to say that staph infections are not a real problem; especially in hospitals, which (generally) do use disinfectant soap. I am saying that alarm over the bacteria on your desk is premature.
Researchers also separated office workers into two groups: one group used disinfectant wipes to clean their desks, phones and computers; the other group did not.
Reee-lly! What an interesting project. I wonder who funded it? I have some other observations about people who clean their desks with sanitizing wipes, but I'll leave the psychoanalysis to the professionals.
Dr. Gerba has also done work on how anti-bacterial kitchen supplies reduce of risk for disease (html courtesy of google.) Search the document for "Gerba".
Hell, take a look at his press coverage overall. -
