Re:Who cares
We're always at war. The war on drugs. The war on porn. The war on obesity.
Oceania is at war with Eastasia. Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia.

PAY NO ATTENTION TO THAT MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN!
"for I am the great and powerful OB!"
Outsourcing jobs to India means more jobs for better pay at home - just like War creates Peace and Freedom makes Slavery and Ignorance breeds Strength.
Women never really faint, Villains always blink their eyes, Children are the only ones who blush and Life is just to Die.

Why, anybody can have a brain. That's a very mediocre commodity. Every pusillanimous creature that crawls on the Earth or slinks through slimy seas has a brain. Back where I come from, we have universities, seats of great learning, where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts and with no more brains than you have. But they have one thing you haven't got: a diploma.

Oceania

Oceania (commonly called the US and Britain) is at war with Terrorism. Oceania has always been at war with Terrorism.

war is peace
"the irony might be that the EU's actions result in reduced competition when a company simply packs up their products and leaves"
War is Peace, Freedom Is Slavery, Ignorance Is Strength, anti-competition practices reduces competition. -

War is Peace indeed...

Redundant
These guys are already on the job.
I've always trusted them to interpret the news for me, and I have no complaints.

Bizarro World
>"...undermine democracy"
Sometimes I feel like I'm in one of those Star Trek episodes where nothing makes sense and it turns out to be psychological testing by aliens.
According to my government officials,
- a decorated Marine colonel is a "coward'
- ayone who agrees with the Army War College about Iraq is an appeaser
- people who uphold oaths to defend the Constitution "only aid the terrorists"
- and people who work for honest elections "undermine democracy".
Check out Students for Orwell. -

1984 comes to you live in 2024. That's a reality that scares me....
Students for an Orwellian Society.
I also recommend that people watch Why We Fight , a look at the rise of the military-industrial complex. Not fully related to surveillance, and yet not fully unrelated, either. -
move on
Nothing to worry about, move on. The documents in question are just being upgraded to the latest version of newspeak. Ignorance is strength. http://www.studentsfororwell.org/

Re:Who is Justin Orndorff ?
11. And he may well be jnana on slashdot.
If you look at the posts on your item 4, jnana is the alias that Justin chose. As you have show (10), he is an English major, and looking at some of the posts, it looks like this guy is an English major, or at least someone with humanities training.
And, as much as it is somewhat disturbing how much can be dug up regarding someone on the web, his slashdot sig has a link to a Students for Orwell site, so I imagine in a perverse sort of way that Jusin might approve of all of this. And least an English major, he should appreciate the irony.

Re:But the Patriot Act says that it's legal!
We are exactly 20 years off on our calendar.
Sure, anyone with two brain cells to rub together was so furious they could choke at Bush's start of election speech. But were you furious because it wasn't Orwellian enough for you?? You need:
SOS: Students for an Orwellian Society!
Remember always:
WAR IS PEACE!
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY!
IGNORANCE IS STRENGHT! -

Re:No Blood for Neptune!
> Where is this "agression" of which you speak?
they clearly demonstrated their agression and expansionist/imperialist designs by having obscenely large numbers of their children die from leukaemia caused by the depleted uranium shells left behind by America in the 1991 Gulf War.
Also, half a million dead due to the US-sponsored UN sanctions against Iraq just proves how evil Iraqis are. if they weren't evil, we wouldn't be slaughtering them, would we?
if you believe any of the above, here's some more "truth" for you:
might makes right
fox news
war is peace
freedom is slavery
ignorance is strength
arbeit macht frei
those of you who are offended by the above lies might like to take a look at http://www.studentsfororwell.org/ -
This is the best justification I've ever seen...for Linux in the classroom, with each student knowing their own root password:
"But my teacher says that we are not supposed to learn anything by ourselves because we might learn wrong things"
It seems that Orwell was right about the principles, he just got the date wrong.

Re:dangerous trends...
Personally I like Orwell cause he's funny. Students For Orwell: Because 2003 is 19 years too late.

Re:Orwell's vision was true!
Right now he's getting a great deal of play in the media for his prescience, not becuse 1984 came true, but because he helped create a vocabulary (thoughtcrime, Big Brother etc...) that can be used to view current events in a new (disturbing) way.
For example, check out Google News through truespeak filter at berkeley (or any news site, just replace the second http address).
His language casts a new light on what's going on, for issues of computer privacy to foreign and domestic policy...
True fans can sheck out Students for an Orwellian Society which continues in the vein. (And, to be clear, it's satire guys, satire) -
Re:Orwell is alive and kicking...
The fact that this was modded down to troll is disturbing. There are some very legitimate reasons to be annoyed with the Office of Homeland Security.
And the OP is not the first to make comparisons with Nineteen Eighty-Four. -
Is that from 1984?After all, nothing assures freedom like constant, unchecked surveillance.
Sounds like familiar doublespeak. Perhaps you meant "Freedom is Slavery."
You know, I used to think all references to 1984 were over-the-top black helicopter crowd nonsense, but Bush has brought me around. Did you know he was born just a couple of years before the book came out? Maybe it was his bedtime reading as a toddler.
Remember when the White House proposed an office of disinformation -- and got driven back? Wouldn't they have done better with "Ministry of Truth"?
Remember:- * Report Thoughtcrime
* War Is Peace
* Freedom Is Slavery
* Ignorance Is Strength
* Big Brother Is Watching You
(The SOS site has other useful tips.) -
Students for an Orwellian Society
The Students for an Orwellian Society also stand in support of the realization of Orwell's great dream as set forth in his prophetic work in 1984. Unite to bring Orwell and Bush's dream of IngSoc to the Oceania people today!

Re:Welcome to 1984...
Ah, but, unfortunately, we are not fully at 1984 yet. That is why some friends and I have formed the Students for an Orwellian Society (SOS). Because 2001 is 17 years too late.
