I've disabled all certificates and only enable certificates when sites break. This will be very region-specific, but after two years I'm up to ten root certs enabled. Of course, I don't trust those ten certificate authorities, but there are ten that I need to do my internet business. Reduced attack surface area and all. CNNIC is not one of the enabled certificates!

research your Cherry MX mechanical keyswitches
OP, you'll likely want a mechanical keyboard for a heavy use machine.
I used membrane dome keyboards for years. The Microsoft Natural keyboards has my the ideal ergonomic layout and is extremely comfortable for typing, with the added bonus of most keys being slightly different shapes which is incredibly handy for gaming. However, these keyboards wear out after a couple of years and they don't have anti-ghosting which means you can only hold down 2 or 3 keys at once before you lose keystrokes.
I've since bought, and returned, many mechanical keyboards. I returned them because I hated the feel and kept pressing keys by accident. I did some research and the most helpful site was at the link below which has amazing technical diagrams that illustrate the "clickiness" and action of Cherry MX keyswitches.

Try them out at a local store if possible - computer parts stores often have a Cherry MX sample board with one of each type. Then look for a keyboard with the keyswitches you want and the additional features you'd like (anti-ghosting, media keys, volume knob, macro keys).
After some research I decided on the Logitech G710+. It's expensive (regular about $150) and a little large but has Cherry MX Brown keyswitches which have a little resistance, an intermediate click as you press them, but are quieter than the Blue switches which otherwise feel the same. It has media keys and a volume knob which I use all the time. I have no need for the macro keys.
My kingdom for a Microsoft Natural keyboard with mechanical keyswitches!!!

unless I use a screen-keyboard, I need to change my hands from the keyboard to the mouse and back again for this "one-click-experience". Thats stupid. My setup has "one keypress search" (ok actually two if you count whitespace), which is far more better. I use an already existing feature. My most important search sites get such shortcuts. My current prefixes are:

Do you have any proof of this? I actually run Windows 8.1 Update 2 (x64) with Windows Update set to only notify me of updates. No updates from Microsoft have been installed without me explicitly installing them.
Well, only that I had updates turned completely off, and on several occasions my wife told me the computer was sluggish and acting weird. I shut it down, and lo, an update. The only update I ever purposely allowed was to 8.1.

I like to see the visuals of virtual blood as it splashes across the screen as all of the Metro apps scream in digital silence and die. (ie, you can ignore the errors.) And then I install a real start menu and I'm good to go! Steps:
1: REMOVE Metro. (not disable, not hide; DIE.)

Not This Fscking S#!+ again. True, Microsoft has been trolling the IT world by patenting exFAT and getting SD Card Association to mandate its use in SDXC. But supported Windows desktop operating systems (since Vista) can read and write UDF on flash drives. Or do specific Microsoft products have problems with UDF?

Windows 7 has new features as well. If you hit the Windows key on the keyboard and type it will instantly find any document or program.
I think that feature was already in Vista (althought it was slow), and in many Linux distributions.
I like aero snap. On your Windows 7 system drag the title bar of your browser to the left or right? Notice there was a clear rectangle on what it would look like before it was moved? Now you can have 2 documents side by side.
I think that feature is already in Windows XP, but you need to right click the start menu bar or something to make it happen.
What annoys me in Windows is that the windows don't snap to each other and to display edges. There are some programs that help with that, but it should be the default.

It's all relative. Itanium was slated to be *the only* 64 bit chip, replacing x86 with a new architecture. It was supposed to be the only server chip as it cleaned up all the RISC chips out of the market. It kind of did the latter - only Sparc and POWER still really exist, MIPS, PA-RISC, and Alpha are gones.
But the goals were high. Destroy all other chips. even x86. Not have a second vendor (no more AMD making x86 chips) meant all the money went to Andy Grove. They never did close to any of that. Based on the money poured in, and the expectations, it is a failure. Maybe not Apple Newton level failure, but it is a failure.

And 'Balanced' setting on desktops is the best compromise. A computer's processor and other hardware with power modes does not need to be running at their highest phase 24/7. Certain things (e.g browsing) use maybe 10% of a computers capabilities, and balanced ensures that systems like bluetooth and secondary hard drives turn off when needed and sooner than they would at high performance.

Not that I use IE, but I tried that immediately and it works great. No need to install any add-ons, it works right out of the box, you just have to subscribe to one of those lists (like in Adblock+). And the page with those lists is provided by Microsoft!

* A drive which has had "dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda" run on itand it works with exactly the same performance as a full format, if the full format is doing "extra things".
There are a lot of articles out there by tech journalists which repeat the meme that it somehow makes a difference, but it doesnt; Im willing to bet that if you were to zero out your drive, install windows, plant a single 100MB video on that drive, and then full format it, that I could recover that video file 95% intact within 30 minutes.

I can't speak to the security of SSDs.
There are two reasons why it may reduce the lifespan: 1) no TRIM support. Here is a Q/A which confirms this for LUKS on Linux, I doubt Truecrypt have TRIM support either. http://superuser.com/questions/124310/does-luks-encryption-affect-trim-ssd-and-linux . TRIM is relatively new, and while most filesystems do now support it, you're not losing out on much performance. An alternative is to leave a percentage (e.g. 10 %) of the drive completely unused, as an unformatted partition (NOT encrypted). This gives the drive's wear levelling algorithm some more room to work with. Drives do of course already have some such space which is not visible to the user.
2) Encrypted data are not compressible. Some SSDs use compression to get better write bandwidth and to reduce the number of writes. You shouldn't worry too much about this. You get what the hardware can support. The same thing would happen if you only stored H.264 videos, which also can't be compressed much, so the manufacturer has to allow for this.

better explorer functions like e.g. "admin console here", and built in support for mounting iso's. With windows 7 you have to add these in on your own, with windows 8 they are already there.
With windows 8, you need to add the start button on your own. I'll take the start button over some little-used run cmd as admin anytime.
If you want to show your distaste with metro, enable the customer experience reporting setting and just don't use it. They actually do make design decisions based on that.
I have a better idea. Instead of we the end user put up with Microsoft's crap just so we can give them feedback, why not just give them feedback by not purchasing it at all.
Is that Stockholm syndrome I smell?

Get informed, please. The latency on the internet to another continent can easily be significantly less than the latency from moving your mouse until pixels on your screen change as a result of that. You won't want to do the world championship Quake tournament with OnLive, that's true. For most games and most gamers and most internet connections, there is no fundamental obstacle to something like OnLive.
