Re:I don't get it
It is educated speculation. We know the Sun was 25% cooler in the early solar system and can model climate to some degree. Models show that as the Sun got warmer, at one point the oceans would have boiled, causing an extreme greenhouse affect, stopping any plate tectonics that may have been happening and trapping the planets interior heat, leading to more volcano-ism and eventually a resurfacing event or even 2. The evidence of the volcano-ism and resurfacing event are there to be seen (almost no craters and big volcanoes) and volcanoes pump out CO2 (and sulfur).
One piece of evidence that we could find would be life in the upper atmosphere, of which there is some circumstantial evidence of. http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/l...Eventually it is predicted a similar thing will happen to the Earth. In 500 million - a billion odd years, the Sun will heat up enough to boil our oceans, leading to a strong greenhouse affect, sterilizing the surface, stopping plate tectonics and depending on how much interior heat the Earth has, an increasing amount of CO2.
The solar heating mechanism is well understood, hydrogen gets converted to helium, which increases the density of the Sun, leading to faster nuclear reactions and more heat. -
Re:Octavia Butler - finally on the screen
It strange that no TV or film version of Butler's work has ever been made, but an adaptation, Dawn, is finally in the works: http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/o...
Years after her death, her work is only getting more relevant so this could be great if done well.
Nnedi Okorafor's "Who Fears Death" is in the works also.

Re:Global Warming Alarmism
"Global Warming Will Kill Us All." Is probably a lot more likely than most climate scientists would like it to be - as unfortunately, the most accurate Climate Models tend to be the most pessimistic (I would love to be wrong in this)!
https://www.technologyreview.c...
"Global warming’s worst-case projections look increasingly likely, according to a new study that tested the predictive power of climate models against observations of how the atmosphere is actually behaving. The paper, published on Wednesday in Nature, found that global temperatures could rise nearly 5 C by the end of the century under the the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s steepest prediction for greenhouse-gas concentrations. That’s 15 percent hotter than the previous estimate. "
Even the mildest predictions of Global Warming show increased threats to American security and economy - yet Trump claims that security and economy are more important than dealing with Global Warming:
http://www.latimes.com/world/e...
"The Trump administration will stay focused on economic growth and national security no matter the outcome of its climate change policy review, a U.S. official told delegates at a United Nations convention in Germany on Saturday.http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/s...
"Navy Rear Admiral (retired) David Titley has stated very clearly that it's a threat to U.S. national security, and President Obama went as far, correctly, as to say that climate change denial is a threat to our security as well. Interestingly, current Secretary of Defense James Mattis — one of the very few people in Trump's administration who understands that climate change is real — has called it a threat to national security as well." -
Re:Wait...
But don't forget the SyFi channel's Robot Combat League

Can't see anything good coming from this merger.
Cable and internet rates are insane right now. -
Re:In other words...
i always thought it would make a great conspiracy dystopian story where the superrich, with everything automated, don't need us anymore so they simply kill us all off the earth reduced to 700,000 souls from 7,000,000,000 in a matter of days (some sort of highly infectious agent?)
Sounds like the plot of Helix.

Re:Piloted?
The closest thing to what you're describing was a 2013 SciFi series called http://www.syfy.com/robotcombatleague.
They were hydraulically powered humanoid robots that beat on each other until either one of them stopped functioning or it went to the judges' decision.
I just watched some highlights and man, is that lame. The robots have legs, and the legs move like they're walking, but the robots are actually just stuck on the end of big metal poles that move them around the ring.
I understand that technology isn't to the point where a bipedal robot can balance itself while executing complex movements, let alone while something else is trying to knock it down. But what they have there is stupid enough that they just shouldn't have bothered.

The best I have seen so far was on Sci Fi channel
The Robot Combat League was fairly interesting given the limitations of the machinery that they are using.
The technology of Robot Smack Downs would have to surpass that of the Robot Combat League by a pretty large margin before it became half decent, and I don't see that happening any time soon.

Re:Countdown for the SyFy disaster flick
Looking at their original movies, it appears that SyFy is the disaster.
"Ghost Shark: it's a shark that's a ghost. Need anything else?" SyFy, hinting that you're aware you're making disgracefully shitty entertainment doesn't mean it's not disgracefully shitty. In fact, it just makes it worse. -
Can it do smell, taste and touch, too?
If it can't, then Rachel on Alphas still has it beat!
Man that's a good show, can't wait for season three! Oh, wait...

Re:Sci-fi on Syfy?
Say it ain't so. I wonder when they'll squeeze this into the schedule between all the wrestling and other ratings-chasing dreck.
But we won't know if it's a true SciFi series until it gets unceremoniously cancelled for no good reason.
My latest guilty pleasure is on SyFy channel
.. Robot Combat League. Yes it is cheesy. Yes it has the typical reality show emphasis on personalities. Yes they overdo the pyrotechnics. Yes there is probably about 15 minutes tops of real footage in the hour long show (Ya Tivo!) . Yes the robots are all the same basic platform (Nascar of robotics?), but it is fun to watch 8 foot tall, 800 lb tele-operated robots walking around and arena and wailing into each other and spewing hydraulic fluid when valves and cylinders give way. And then seeing the attempts at repairs in between rounds. While it may seem like a superficial show its fun to sit back and try to understand the engineering that went into the combatants, and given that this is a first-of-its-kind series I hope the quality can only go up
.. if there is a next season. -
Think you forgot one...
...I didn't see Mega Python vs. Gatoroid on that list! SyFy is still Sci-Fi right? Oh wait...

Re:How many slashdot icons does Apple get?
You've just made me realise: what sci-fi isn't "dated" by now?
Of course I generally watch stuff on DVD rather than TV these days, but I don't remember even hearing of any recent good sci-fi shows that aren't a remake or a continuation of some show from the 20th century.. in fact, even if you take out the "good", what fresh stuff has there been?
Though it has to be said that dated doesn't mean bad. Lightsabers are incredibly dated, but I still want one
:) and the BSG remake was pretty damn good.I like Eureka - and it came out in this century.

Re:Yay. more money for mansquito II!
Don't forget wrastlin'! Definitely science fiction at its best.

Re:Google does the same
>>>it's simply that the networks don't want to play nice
Pretty much. They want you watch the shows on COMCAST and other cable companies, not over the internet. I submitted the following article to slashdot about a week ago:
NBC's Syfy delaying online episodes 30 days
The Comcast/NBC-owned Syfy cable channel has decided to delay Online airing of new episodes. Most of its shows (including Haven, Ghost Hunters, Sanctuary) will not be legally available online for 30 days, in an attempt to get more people watching the show live on their Cable or Dish TV subscriptions. The response from Syfy VP Craig Engler: "How soon we post video is dependent on various agreements with producers, distributors, etc. We post as much as we can as soon as we can."
The explanation given by Hulu on their Stargate Universe page: "The first 3 episodes of the new season will be available the day after their original airdates. Subsequent episodes will become available 30 days after their original airdates."

Re:Do keep up, dear boy...
I thought they changed their name to SyFi.
No, SyFy
-
Who cares?
Seems to me that the corporation is free to brand itself whatever it pleases. If they feel that they can justify the added expense of making new signs and advertising material with increased sales via the name change, more power to them. This re-branding doesn't seem nearly as stupid as this other one that just took place about a month ago,...

Re:The Best Thing To Do
As for the keyboard itself, seems I've seen that in some si-fi movie.
The new term is SyFy .
