Re:cash4cronies
A 10s of thousands offer would be outbribed I think.
According to this an $18 million contract would require a bribe of a boat + 100k. Presumably 240k cash would work as well. Those are 2005 dollars though.
-
Re:cash4cronies
Because the sort of person who requires a bribe in exchange for awarding a contract probably doesn't care who has a foot in the door, they care only about the bribe.
Duke Cunningham made lists and, although there were some advantages of scale in his bribe menu, there were no 'foot in the door' clauses.

Re:One idea...
"Bloggers just cherry pick other peoples' hard work and add a few opinionated comments of their own to it."
Not only is that complete bullshit, but there was a recent case where just the opposite happened:

Re:Can't win as a Republican...
By switching parties he's preventing a small group of very conservative voters from restricting the people of PA from electing somebody they've supported over and over in the past.
Very astute analysis. Here's a TPM article exploring that idea in more detail.
As a politically-conscious geek, I also recommend Nate Silver's analysis of the impact of this move on Senate politics.
-
And the surrounding context is great
The TPM piece on this http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2009/04/must_read_5.php mentions incidentally that the position in question had almost gone to Alcee Hastings but didn't because Hastings had earlier been removed "from a federal judgeship over bribery allegations." So Harman only had a chance at the position because the other major contender was corrupt. You've got to love the politicians.

Re:A Setback for Israeli-Palestinian Peace Efforts
Well, she didn't get the chairmanship. See http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2009/04/must_read_5.php But yes, this doesn't look good at all. It looks from the circumstances like Bush and Gonzales more or less bought her support by promising not to prosecute. It really says something about how appalling Gonzalez was that he not only made Ashcroft look sane but now even out of office he is continuing to make Ashcroft look better just by comparison.

There is plenty of legwork being done by bloggers
At least at the national level. See http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/ for an example - it started off as a single blogger who actually dug for news. Now it's up to about a dozen people, and they do a really good job of reporting.
The problem, in my view, is LOCAL news. There's no one who's really filling the role of the local paper in holding the local politicos accountable. It used to be that the county board had to tread at least a little bit lightly when cutting crooked deals with real estate developers, for example... because they couldn't discount the possibility that the County Post was checking up on what was going on. But now the County Post only publishes online, and only AP stories and blogs. There's really very little local reporting going on any more.

The Devil Comes for Republicans
When Republican governor of Louisiana Bobby Jindal took to TV immediately after President Obama's address to the Joint Session of Congress last month, he whined that the government funded volcano monitoring is "wasteful spending". Of course he was lying, since he said "$140M for volcano monitoring", when that money is for USGS "facilities and equipment, including stream gages, seismic and volcano monitoring systems and national map activities", all kinds of important stuff for running and protecting our country.
Then Jindal went into some kind of weird story about his standing for sanity during Hurricane Katrina (which he was lying about, too - and it was a story about the lone Democrat getting things done, surrounded by Republicans including Jindal doing nothing but flapping their lips). Reminding us what happens when the government doesn't monitor predictable local natural disasters that kill thousands and destroy cities.
This was the official Republican response. Maybe they just want to keep secret their main competition for spewing filthy hot air that kills Americans.

Re:Hah. i just donated $5 this morning
You are right. I am hopelessly naive and clueless. I didn't even know that the POTUS votes for bills! ROTFLMAO
I take it back. You aren't naive and clueless. You are a fucking moron. He voted for it while he was a member of the Senate. See where it says "Obama (D-IL), Yea" on that page? Since your memory apparently only goes back to Jan 20th 2009, here is one of the news stories that covered when he promised to filibuster any bill containing telecom immunity.

Re:Content Matters
Slashdot is not a newspaper. It links to newspapers and other outfits with paid journalists. The day "the newspaper" dies, what will all the slashdots, gizmodos, diggs, reddits, twitters and blogs link to? Who will do the reporting they all link to?
Some blogs do a lot of original reporting. Huffington Post and Talking Points Memo both immidiately come to mind.
-
Re:stuff that matters
-
Re:"All traces of George W. Bush disappeared"
and run away when things get frightening
If you are referring to 9/11 that was the long established plan for what POTUS should do in the event of an attack on our country.
There was the choice of McCain or Obama to get things back under adult supervision. It may not have been the one you wanted but it will be an improvement
Who said I wanted either one of them?
and there is still congress, the senate
You mean the same Congress that rubber-stamped everything GWB did when it was controlled by his party? Sorry, I have zero faith in Congress. Most of them place loyalty to party ahead of loyalty to the constitution and the Democratic Congress will be just as happy to rubber stamp Obama's agenda as the Republican Congress was for GWB.
and the judicary
Well, there's some hope there, although I'm personally growing weary of the activist judiciary that has taken it upon itself to set policy.
since the executive branch is not going to act like a monarchy for a very long time (if ever again)
Ha ha ha ha ha. That's funny. Recall Obama's statement when he backstabbed us on FISA:
"So I support the compromise, but do so with a firm pledge that as President, I will carefully monitor the program
Translation: Now that I realize I might actually win this thing, I want these powers for myself in spite of the fact that I was formerly opposed to them. The history of our country is one of every single President since Washington seeking to expand the power of the executive. If you think Obama is going to behave any differently you are in for a rude surprise.
-
Re:bet
You must have bet some real suckers as Obama made his FISA position clear well before he was elected. There was even a big thing on his website about it.
Kudos on your score!

Check the record
Umm, McCain was the loudest critic of torture in the Senate. That's one of the reasons a lot of people DIDN'T like him as a candidate for president. He would have let thousands die rather than twist someones arm. Remember he was tortured, that changed his psyche.
He may have been loud, but he wasn't very firm. When Bush effectively nullified the ban on the military using torture with a signing statement, McCain said and did nothing. When congress tried to extend the ban to prevent the CIA from using torture as well, McCain voted against it.
He may have been against torture at some level, but not as much as he was in favor of getting the nomination. When the two goals came into conflict, he caved.

Re:If we don't stop thepiratebay, the terrorists w
I'm sorry to tell you this, but that dream, while nice, just isn't true. The government is getting ever more efficient about controlling the populace and defining "center" and "extreme" points of view. (hint: if the leaders don't approve, its extreme.) There will come a time when Americans are brainwashed into forgetting that America was created by bloodthirsty revolutionaries. Americans will start to care more about a government handout than a violation of civil rights. Americans will believe to ever-greater extents that if the Government does it, it must have been a good thing. Dissent will lose popularity and the dissenting will be quietly imprisoned or marginalized. God forbid, it will happen.

Federal Tax Dollars At WorkThese fucking pirates have been robbing the system for the last 40 years and now they are at the Cashierâ(TM)s window grovelling

General Welfare Clause
> Exactly which part of the constitution are we deliberately misinterpreting to give the federal government the authority to do this?
Article I, Section 8.
The Congress shall have Power
To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and General Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;[...]
To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;
(Emphasis added. Income tax was provided for in the 16th Amendment.)
I added those extra bits to rebut the other talking points you haven't yet raised. Just because you don't like that part of the Constitution doesn't mean you can ignore it or define it out of existence. Don't you hate it when liberals do that to the 2nd amendment, in order to turn it into a right that belongs to militias instead of individuals? You're doing the same thing.
Even so, Obama is trying to keep you folks happy. Go figure?

Re:Obama - A template for future US politics?
Here's an example from Fox, here's one from ABC. Far more people think McCain is running a negative campain than actually give a damn about the Ayers connection. The number of people who care about Ayers are far less than the number of people who say they will vote for McCain; it's reasonable to assume that the one is a subset of the other. More people think McCain has gone too far with the attacks than care about Ayers. The poll tightening is not due to McCain showing people "who Obama really is". People care about issues, it's the economy stupid, not these tenuous connections to slander-by-association.
-
This is what the world seems to think anyway
According to a BBC article here, Obama seems to be the more popular one (not that I'm implying this is a popularity contest - even if it does end up being one).
The thing I particular don't like about McCain is his propensity to being nasty. As if that's not enough, he continues to be nasty even though there's ample evidence to suggest it isn't working the way he intended it to. If he doesn't listen to whats happening around him, or deliberately chooses to ignore him, he's already exposed a possibly critical weakness. -

Re:Overdrive
ACORN is bothering to check. The problem is that once someone hands in a bogus registration form to them, they are legally obliged to hand it in. What they do, which is absolutely the right thing to do, is mark it as likely problematic.
A couple of good links on the subject: This explains what's going on in detail, in terms of ACORN's responsibilities. And this is a memo from ACORN that explains their side in detail. The bottom line is that ACORN has absolutely no incentive to hand in bogus registrations. They will not (without an enormous amount of effort at disguise rarely seen outside of Hollywood) enable people to vote illegally. They undermine the ability of voter registration offices to process legitimate registrations, which the vast majority of ACORN-processed registrations are. ACORN's reputation is tarnished despite the fact they're legally required to hand in the registrations despite not originating them. And ACORN's own efforts to flag suspect registrations pretty much sink the "ACORN is involved in a conspiracy" meme - why the hell flag them if you want them accepted?

Re:the dirtiest trick is already out of the bag
Here is another dirty trick:
Montana GOP Targets WWII Hero in Voter Challenge
Last week, we noted the announcement by the Montana Republican party that it's challenging the voter registrations of over 6000 voters, mostly in Democratic-leaning counties.
Country first.
But two registered Montana voters, along with the state Democratic party, this morning filed suit with a federal court to stop the challenges, calling the GOP move "a transparent and very likely unsuccessful attempt" to discourage voters from turning out.
It's already clear that the list of challenged voters includes a good number of people who are hardly prime suspects for voter fraud.
In an opinion piece published yesterday in the Montana Standard, the state's GOP lieutenant governor, John Bohlinger, noted that one voter who's being challenged is Frank St. Pierre, an 86-year old ten-time Medal of Honor winner who helped save thousands of allied troops in Dunkirk during the Second World War, and happened to move across town recently. Bohlinger called the effort to challenge St. Pierre "an utter disgrace."
And as we told you earlier today, the list also includes Kevin Furey, a former Democratic state representative who's an army reserve officer about to deploy to Kuwait. (The GOP has since backed down on that one.)

Re:What a crock.
You offer one example of that, and it only applies if you don't accept his explanation that he meant it wouldn't be physically divided as it was until 1967.
You must have me confused with you. I gave a lot of examples, whereas you only gave one. And frankly, I'm a little sick of all of Obama's "clarifications" (which amount to outright reversals). Isn't his biggest asset that he's a good communicator?
Here's a McCain overnight reversal for you,
You're comparing his reaction to the ruling a few hours after it happened with his reaction after he had a chance to actually read the ruling. It's a stretch to call that a "reversal". Obama, on the other hand, was commenting on a situation that has been developing since before he was born. Obama's overnight reversal is a lot more shocking, no?
Being against a provision of a bill and voting for a bill are not necessarily contradictory.
I agree with your theory, but not in this particular instance. Obama specifically promised to "support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies.". He then reversed course 180 degrees and voted for telecom immunity. This would have been the perfect opportunity for him to show leadership and stand up for what's right over what's popular. Instead, he failed the American people. I would love to hear Obama's "clarification" on that one.
Anytime, anywhere doesn't mean that McCain should get to pick the rules.
Sure sounds like an offer for McCain to pick the venue to me. But I'm not a great communicator like Sen. Obama.
It's not a virtue in itself, but it is a virtue to truly discuss the nuances of the issues rather than spout the bumper-sticker version for the masses that have no clue about the complexities of foreign policy and international relations.
A great example of this was here. McCain gave a straightforward answer that conveyed all of the information that needed conveying. I happen to disagree with his answer, but at least I know where he stands. Contrast that with Obama, the great communicator, who stuttered, stammered, and finally settled upon avoiding the question entirely. Nuance, indeed.

A book burning, corrupt creationist
Seriously, are we really asking what a creationist book burner thinks about technology? She's literally 1 step away from Ted Stevens, hell she even supported his Bridge to Nowhere (until it became a political hot potato) and was a major member of his PAC. Reading up on JUST what has been found out in the first 24-48 hours after McCain chose her (but, apparently before he vetted her) she's by far the most corrupt politician that I've read up on in a long while.
You guy should read the Open Letter (confirmed true by conservative sources) about what she's pulled in her short stint as a poltician. It's a laundry list of disgusting nepotism and mismanagement.
http://thezaftigredhead.blogspot.com/2008/09/open-letter-from-someone-who-knows-gov.htmlIn short, she's a female version of George W. Bush. Her views on technology probably involve leeches and "internet tubes." Don't be swindled by the current spin cycle coming out of McCain's campaign -- she's woefully inexperienced and completely unsuited to even run a small town of 5000 -- hell, the almost threw her out of town and she drove them so far into debt they won't get out for 100 years.

Re:Reverse Troll?
>Republicans did this about 10 years ago, by pretending to be really annoying Democrats, calling people at inopportune hours, etc.
[CITATION NEEDED]
Searching republican "false flag" robocalls brings up hundreds of good hits on it.
Here's the first hit describing a series of MORE THAN 20 harrassing calls, pretending to be from the Democratic candidate. The Republicans act like jackasses making harrassing robocalls, trying to trick people into thinking the Democrat is the evil jackass, so that people will get annoyed and vote Republican.Republicans have done it countless times across the country. Here's the Slashot story on it. It cites it happening in 53 Congressional districts in 2006. So these false flag tactics are a common Republican ploy. The only problem with the original post is that it said "Republicans did this about 10 years ago". Republicans still do it. I hardly expect them to stop just for the 2008 election.
If you, or anyone you know, gets annoying robocalls "from Democrats", they are likely from Republicans. They also like to run bogus phone "polls". They will ask wildly biased questions like "Candidate X voted against a law to protect children from pedophiles, does this make you more or less likely to vote for candidate X?" Where of course candidate "X" is the democratic candidate. By inserting "facts" about their opponent into "questions", they make it sound like innocent neutral information from an innocent neutral source, to hide the fact that they are actually wildly biased and distorted accusations being flung by a Republican smear campaign.

Yes, because our Lord and Saviour Obama
would never astroturf
(go ahead, read the article and google the name "Nikki E Sutton" ... she's a campaign worker for the Obama campaign.) -
Re:Oh, good.
they expect to fight enemies that embed themselves in civilian populations
No don't worry, we got 'em.

I'm not saying it was a good justification.

Here is Obama's statement on the FISA bill
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/201032.php
He supports it. He supposedly opposes retroactive immunity, and once last October even declared that he would filibuster a FISA bill with immunity, but he appears to have changed his mind at the last minute.
If he filibusters, perhaps I'll change my mind on donating to his campaign. But right now, he has signaled that he won't oppose this FISA bill - and further, he may even vote for it.
If you're OK with that, I suggest you campaign for him. I'm not OK with that.

Official: Obama Supports This!
Obama Officially Supports This
He seems to view giving retroactive immunity to corporations for horrendous violations of US law and the constitution as something "disagreeable but potentially acceptable".
I think i'm going to vote for Mccain. I'm left by canadian standards, but my position means jack if the candidate lies to you. Mccain is honest.
I know he doesn't give a flying crap about me and is in bed with corporations. I know what to expect from him.

Re:No. no. No.
It ain't exactly nothing:
According to Portfolio, which broke the story last week, the lower rates Dodd received saved him "about $58,000 on his Washington residence over the life of the loan, and $17,000 on the Connecticut home." Dodd borrowed $506,000 at 4.25 percent to refinance a Capitol Hill townhouse, originally purchased in 1999, and $275,042 at 4.5 percent to refinance a home in East Haddam, Conn.Rather than requiring him to pay the full amount to obtain the reduced mortgage rates, as other customers must, Countrywide waived three-eighths of a point, or about $2,000, on the first loan and a quarter-point, or $700, on the second.
From this article. -
Re:Sudden? The point here is that this Senator claims we are giving al Qaida members more legal rights than we gave German POWs in WWII. He ignores the fact that German POWs were treated very well, while we keep these al Qaida members locked in prison cells with occasional water boarding. Source please.
Also, I would hardly call three detainees being water boarded, occasional. I'd call that damn rarely.
From HERE: Those subjected to waterboarding were al Qaeda suspects Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, Hayden said. -
Re:This isn't Insightful.. It's disgusting...
That would seem like a silly thing to do, about as silly as when US Congressional Rep Randy Cunningham wrote the fee schedule for bribes on a page from his office notepad, complete with his own letterhead.

Obama is Against Warrantless WiretapsWhen Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) used his presidential primary campaign to lead the Congressional campaign to stop Bush's FISA violations, Obama supported Dodd's filibuster, specifically saying (through his spokesperson Bill Burton):
Senator Obama has serious concerns about many provisions in this bill, especially the provision on giving retroactive immunity to the telephone companies. He is hopeful that this bill can be improved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. But if the bill comes to the Senate floor in its current form, he would support a filibuster of it.

Bloch is a big-time political hack
Didn't see anybody mention this yet, however, Scott Bloch, the Special Prosecutor, is a big-time political hack,:
Watchdog: Doc Shows Bloch Ginned Up White House Investigation to Protect Himself
Since 2005, Special Counsel Scott Bloch, whose office is charged in part with protecting federal whistleblowers, has been under investigation for retaliating against whistleblowers in his own office and generally politicizing the OSC.
Also of interest here is the fact that Bloch used Geeks On Call to delete information off his govt-issued laptop:
Recently, investigators learned that Mr. Bloch erased all the files on his office personal computer late last year. They are now trying to determine whether the deletions were improper or part of a cover-up, lawyers close to the case said.
Bypassing his agency's computer technicians, Mr. Bloch phoned 1-800-905-GEEKS for Geeks on Call, the mobile PC-help service. It dispatched a technician in one of its signature PT Cruiser wagons. In an interview, [Bloch] confirmed that he contacted Geeks on Call but said he was trying to eradicate a virus that had seized control of his computer....
Bloch must be trying to take the heat off himself, after the recent FBI raid on his house and office.
Besides covering up for the White House, Karl Rove, and himself, he also indulged in some old-fashioned perks, picking up some $400 hand towels on the OSP tab. -

Re:How will they enforce it?
According to a resolution just passed by the House, the House Judiciary Committee is now empowered to sue the White House to get Mukasey to enforce the contempt citations. Which means the prospect of a trial with testimony under oath on the subject.

I feel better
Requests for satellite images will be vetted even more than they were when the requests went through the Civil Applications Committee. All requests will be reviewed by an interagency group that includes Justice Department officials to ensure civil rights and civil liberties are not violated.
Is this the same "justice" department that said torture was OK? Is this the same "justice" department that rushed to the hospital to see if the incapacitated attorney general would overrule the acting head's concerns about warrantless wiretapping?
