Disable Google Assistant
First do this:
https://www.tech-recipes.com/r...
Android (at least my moto x4) will still respond to the "Ok Google" hotword and prompt you to set up Google Assistant. You probably don't want that, so go into Settings > Apps > Google > Permissions and uncheck the microphone permission.
Keep an eye on that; you know all of this runs afoul of their conversion strategy so they'll find an excuse to turn it back on or tie that permission to something you actually want to do.
Honestly, I don't know if Google knows what it wants or why some people find this sort of thing objectionable.

Re: Thats not good.
So you inspected every line of source code of your browser, operating system, and java runtime, and visually verified that they are all secure?
No, I simply know enough about exploits. The software on my system may — indeed, is likely to — contain the common vulnerabilities. In theory it is just as exploitable as anything else.
However, to be able to exploit my machine in practice, you need to know exactly how my stuff is compiled. How exactly should your JPG file be crafted, for example, to insert executable code to where it will be executed? People running pre-compiled binaries can all be infected by the same image.
People like myself, using non-default compilers with non-default optimization flags, require customization. And there is no profit in such individual customizations for any regular hacker — one has to target me specifically spending considerable effort. People, who'd do that to get me, can already issue subpoenas and obtain search-warrants...
Like a person hugging the ground when a mortar falls, I'm not invincible. But I'm far safer, than the fools standing-up are...
(BTW, it really is a bad style to down-mod and then post anonymously in the same thread...)

Re:Wikipedia
Try DuckDuckGo instead of Google.
As for microtransactions, I dislike them too - but I think this is one area where the bitcoins (or rather a better one that's more "inflationary" like dogecoin) can find a niche. I understand Reddit uses dogecoins quite happily as "tips" as that currency is deigned to generate coins to encourage spending rather than hoarding. As a result, people actually spend them on little things.... like articles you appreciated.
Like I said, however, a lot of times when I need resources most it's when I can least afford them. Whether it's one horrendous annual fee or the Death of a Thousand Cuts makes no difference, really. I prefer being able to pay what I can when I can. Some people won't pay anything anytime, but the deadbeats are with us always.
DuckDuckGo, Google, Yahoo, even Bing it doesn't matter who your preferred search engine is. I just used Google as an example.

Re:Contact blocking
Blocking spam SMS is usually as simple as changing the email address associated with your phone. By default, this is how you send SMS spam. Otherwise, it's too easy to trace back and sue. But carriers give you a way to change it, so if you switch from 1234567890@vtext.com to sdfoiwnernxjk@vtext.com, you'll probably never get another message. I used to get ~1/day before I changed my setup. I have not received a single one since.

Agreed
[In the Chrome Web Store] you'll find dozens of 'apps' to install and run directly from a handy icon on the browser's home screen. Except, these aren't 'apps' at all. They're websites.
So Google has taken web clips and brought it to users the way Apple originally wanted to on the iPhone. Before the iPhone had native applications, "apps" were originally supposed to be nothing more than web clips anyway.
My only problem with this is relying on connectivity to use a piece of software that doesn't require online functionality, for example a unit converter vs displaying up to date weather information. Both of these could be done as web clips, but only one should be. Therefore it may be important to designate which apps are actually native applications and which are simply web clips. -

Re:I stopped reading...
Again, you're looking at it from the Linux fan boy's position and not that of the end user. The average end user has no idea what the entire "proprietary driver" problem is. They just want it to work right out of the box without any bizarre configurations past user accounts, and time and date. A pop up that says "use the proprietary driver" is confusing to the end user. Even with the proprietary driver, OP was complaining that the GUI was off. You ignored it, of course, but businesses cannot do that.
You may find installing "ubuntu-restricted-extras" easy but the average user would have no idea to even install that. He'd just notice that the fonts on his web browser were off. He might just think Linux sucks and not even bother looking for a solution. Even if he installed "ubuntu-restricted-extras," how would he do it? From a command prompt? What about the long freaking EULA you have to sign to get the package? Is he breaking laws to get the fonts he needs? Do you even know the answer to that question? If it's legal to ship with Ubuntu, why isn't it in the box?
http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/533/microsoft_windows_multiple_monitor_tips_and_tricks/
It's cool to dismiss users but that's not a good business scheme. The attitude that you display furthers the alienation that most users feel with Linux and its community.

Re:Focuses on Interfaces to Ease the Pain
One last thing I'd like to bitch about is that this download is an MSI. Really? You really need to do that? For the love of christ, I'm a developer. Could you please just give me a standalone zipped up SDK directory that I could add to my path if I want to? I'm not even going to install this because it's going to get all up in my registry n' shit.
While I realize that bitching about MS products is a common hobby, you could just extract the files directly and avoid any installation.
msiexec ships with Vista (and possibly earlier versions of Windows, I haven't checked). There are a number of third party programs that could do it as well, just look around.

Re:How can this be?
If You think Time Machine is a safe backup method you are in for a surprise. If you delete or overwrite any file you will lose the deleted and the overwritten file in the history as well.
Have you even used Time Machine?
I demonstrated this to a friend last weekend, I recovered a file from my desktop which I'd deleted six months and countless backup cycles ago.
File changes are also preserved--but at every hour or whatever it's set to, not every time you hit "Save."
The only times a deleted file disappears from TM is if you explicitly tell it to delete all its backups, or your backup drive is running out of space and starts removing older backup sets.

Re:if you think it's over...
Profiting from another persons crime? the sites^H^H^H^H^Hgoogles primary income is copyrighted content, and don't pretend otherwise. they know full well without that pirated content they wouldn't have a business, hence they aren't innocent.
Here is how you can use google to find files of the mp3 and ogg kind. Who knows what license those files have? Should google have to know? Is it their job to police all web sites and remove copyrighted material or only their own, like youtube?
If piratebay is guilty then google is guilty therefore by the "logic" of ifpi: if you use teh googleh you ares terrorerist! You might say something like:
"Duh. The piratebay indexes mostly copyrighted stuff while google only indexes wholesome family entertainment. Also I am stupid."
So, if the piratebay had a bunch of legal material indexed like google then it's hunky dory? What should the ratio between those two be?
In fact the is a lot of legal material there. In the end, almost all of this discussion is pointless because the real problem is that publishers and some authors still think that despite technology democratizing distribution of culture for everyone they still want to maintain their monopoly on it.
If we wish to live in a just society ruled by law and not by men then we have to be able to respect the law and feel that they are just for everyone.
"To make laws that man cannot and will not obey, servers to bring all law into contemt."
You can't respect the law if they don't respect you.Fuck the cultural monopoly.

Re:It's Linux, NOT GNU/Linux!!
While I don't have a Mac handy to confirm this, a quick Google suggests that OS X does not include GCC. Rather, it's included with XCode, which is a free download from Apple, much like the free version of Visual Studio from Microsoft.
XCode is also included on the OS X install media, and is an optional install when you first set up your Mac or upgrade the OS.
-
Re:It's Linux, NOT GNU/Linux!!
I'm not 100% certain, but I think you'll find that gcc has shipped with all versions of Mac OS X. In fact, Windows is the only modern system I know of that DOESN'T ship with a C compiler.
While I don't have a Mac handy to confirm this, a quick Google suggests that OS X does not include GCC. Rather, it's included with XCode, which is a free download from Apple, much like the free version of Visual Studio from Microsoft.
Malware compile code? What's the point?
It's just another attack vector. Malware could potentially use a compiler to recompile itself on the fly to avoid detection from heuristic algorithms; it could also conceivably fool some detection schemes by transporting its main payload as code (anti-virus programs typically only care about executables) and compiling it later. Furthermore, a system like Linux where lots of software is compile-on-install is potentially vulnerable to the compiler itself being replaced by a malignant version which poisons the executables it compiles.
All these are just my guesses; I don't know enough about hacking to construct all the possible attacks exploiting the presence of a compiler on the target system. However, as a general rule, every additional piece of software you include with your OS is an additional exploit vector. -

Done in August with Video
I read and saw the videos about triple booting with MSI wind back in August. He's got a video there and a bunch of hard to grab OS X drivers. If you are going to purchase a MSI wind, please note the issues with the non synaptics trackpads in some circumstances.
You will need an extra stick of RAM, DVD drive, and WLAN card as well. This hack will get you up to OS X 10.5.4. The hackint0sh community is usually a point release or two behind.
The planetx64 version also has problems with the internal mic, the microphone port and the headset port.

This makes sure the new iPhone is NOT CHEAPER.
The contract lock-in insures that the new iPhone is more expensive than the last.
If you do the iPhone math, the new phone will cost you more than the older phone despite the "half the price" ad campaign.
If AT&T really drops free sms, it'll cost even more.
I don't mind paying more. However, for somebody like me not in a G3 area, why should I have to pay the G3 transfer higher prices? -

People waste time because they don't know how to cheat! Here are the vista Solitaire and XP Solitaire cheats.
Honestly, solitaire has the perfect assets to be the most popular computer game.
1. Anybody can figure it out. My children picked it up in 5 minutes.
2. It's available on to a huge population. Everybody with a windows box has it installed and staring them in the face. Any system is powerful enough to run it.
3. It fills downtime while other processes are loading. Need a few minutes to download that huge iso? Heck, you can probably get in a game of solitaire!
Interestingly enough, solitaire is probably the most popular card game as well... for similar reasons.

Only One SDK App Available!
Apple is really running behind in this battle. Currently, there is only one SDK-created, legit application for the iPhone/iTouch that has been released in the wild.
Will people give up the ability to run really nice iTunes unfriendly apps like the NES emulator? Or will developers see the potential and follow the Mac party lines so they can make money on their legit applications...
So far... only one legit app. -

Re:Free software is not money
It looks like they are giving free software and support
What's very funny is Microsoft had a 10 question quiz in an ad here on slashdot. The quiz was to "test your knowledge of software licensing". For grins, I took the test. It will not let you go got the next question (training maze) until you got the current question correct. If they just scored it, I would have done poorly as I chose what a consumer friendly answer should be. Taking the quiz fully convinced me that with GNU style licenses out there, the MS license will lose.
For example, you have a computer with an OEM Windows install. It dies. Can you reinstall the software on another computer? The answer is no. The license is only for the dead computer and is not transferable. Just how does that stack up against my other software which includes the permission to install it on any and all computers I own. Getting me to buy their software is going to be tough. With Open Office, everyone has the same version. With MS Office, I have a machine with Office 97. The daughter has the Office 2003, and the wife's new Vista laptop has the new copy provided for the cost of the media through my employer. It expires when I lose my job or retire. Compare licenses again. One copy on one machine or a site license for all the machines in my house.. Easy choice.. We all have a copy of the up to date Open Office. It supports ODF out of the box, not as a plug-in.

Schools who have to deal with donated machines and per seat licenses have the BSA to fear. Schools who use OSS software do not have this legal liability. MS will either have to blanket change their license or continue to find their market erode.

Business also has to deal with the sticky terms of the MS license

Re:It's rarely ever too lateIt's actually more overhead to not take the snapshot! From http://www.tech-recipes.com/solaris_system_admini
s tration_tips1434.html: The reason that snapshots add no overhead in CPU load is because of the way that ZFS writes changes in data to the disk. ZFS writes its data in units called blocks (which are dynamically sized up to 128KB). When the data in an existing block is changed, ZFS writes the data to a new block on disk before it releases the old block. However, when a shapshot exists for the filesystem, the old block is not released. Instead, it remains as part of the snapshot. Therefore, the only increases in disk space used for snapshots are in keeping around old blocks. -

iTunes? Success? Hah!
iTunes is a piece of shite http://www.macobserver.com/columns/devilsadvocate
/ 2003/20031007.shtml. The only reason is it successful is that iPods suggest using it and probably distribute a CDROM with this garbage on it at purchase time.
Quicktime is only distributed with iTunes whether you want it or not. http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/850/download_apple_ quicktime_without_itunes Rather than live with iTunes, I removed quicktime and found an alternative. Both of these .... "programs" are complete shite VLC and gnump3, xmms, amarok, etc ... work for me and don't completely take over my desktop to run.
Let's see, how else is iTunes forced onto users? What is the easiest way to get legal music? Why, the iTunes store, of course. What other programs will an average user (your mother) use? None. The iTunes store ONLY works with the iTunes client for some reason http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/ storeFront. Since I **will not** run iTunes on a desktop, I'm stuck purchasing music CDs and converting those songs into MP3s myself.
Saying that iTunes is used by users is like saying that Toshiba remote controls are used with Toshiba TVs or Sony remote controls are used with Sony equipment. There is no other choice.
Yes, users can and do replace iTunes, but most simply give up and assume the only real purpose for their PC is to run this piece of shite from Apple. -

Misleading article
The article describes two separate issues: TCP window scaling, and SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection). These have very little to do with each other, excepting the fact that they're both networking features in Windows Vista.
From what I gather from a quick Google, the problem with TCP window scaling is actually one with crap routers that don't support the feature and misbehave upon encountering it. Furthermore, TCP window scaling is not new to Windows Vista. It was merely disabled by default in previous versions of Windows. The fix is extremely simple, see this article for information.
The second issue, with SPI, seems to indeed be a Vista bug, but I can find no evidence whatsoever that it exists in Vista RTM, or even RC1/RC2. It's seriously not "stuff that matters" anymore. Prerelease versions always have bugs! If you don't like it, wait for the RTM (or as is usually the case with Microsoft, the first service pack)!
