    KDE 4 will use Qt 4.0 which is a big improvement in that field. When Qt designer was ported to Qt 4.0 - only the neccesary changes to make it compile - the "libqt size decreased by 5%, Designer num relocs went down by 30%, mallocs use by 51%, and memory use by 15%. The measured Designer startup time went down by 18%".

    DCOP can already do amazing things, like opening and writing a koffice document (including commands to do things like ie: activate bold fonts and many other things)

    Those are the kind of things that make many people use KDE instead of Gnome BTW

    I think nautilus is pretty good, but for some reason I'm not very fond of using it. It seems to get in my way, and I don't like that feeling, but I do believe you when you say that I can change settings to fix it for my tastes.

    In my case it's not the file manager, but the file chooser. Gnome developers decided to develop the GTK file chooser. That's nice, but gnome has many other needs that gtk doesn't. Using the file chooser is PAINFUL. You just have the name, and the "modified" field and a list of favourite locations. You can't even order things by SIZE.

    You don't have different "views" at all in fact. You can't get a view where all the images are show a small thumbnail instead of a meaningless icon. You have to select EVERY file to get a preview at one side - try that in /usr/share/pixmaps or a directory with your digital camera photos, it's really "fun" and "usable". And the image formats that will be previewed are the ones supported by the pixbuf GTK plugins: only the formats in in /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.x.0/loaders/*. Forget about things that have sense, for example video thumbnails, something that has a LOT of sense if you're going to open a video file in a video editing program.

    The funny thing is that nautilus can do all what your need and will give you even thumbnails of videos and even of some .swfs with totem-gstreamer + libswf but the decided to go with this completely useless file selector. Compare it with the KDE file selector, where I even can watch the video. Great things like kparts make the desktop feel different. That image is from a page I wrote about "why KDE rocks"

    Apparently you didn't really understan when I wrote "You can have a Mac OS-like menu bar" ;) There's no way Gnome can have a Mac OS-like menu bar. When I say "Mac OS-like menu bar" I mean: "Have a common file/edit/help menu bar at the top of the screen which changes when you switch between apps"

    If you look at the screenshot closely, you'll see it.

    By the way, KDE also has a gdesklets equivalent called superkaramba which has been included by default in KDE 3.5.0 (I didn't put screenshots of that because I wanted to show "technology" not "eyecandy")

    I use /etc/hosts to filter ad sites, but I wonder if it's the "best way" of doing it. I have some docens of lines on that file like this:

    Both, of course. With debian. I use "apt-build install foo" to compile and install the packages I want to be optimized, most of the time XFree86, libc, and some graphic libraries. And yes, it makes a difference (see http://www.terra.es/personal/diegocg/benchs/x11per f)

    For the rest, it doesn't has any sense. Yes, I'd like that debian would switch to i586 code by default, but at the end, in the x86 world, nothing has changed. The success of x86 is _that_, being the same across several version. Yes there're some multimedia extensions (SSE, etc). That's whay I compile some _multimedia_ packages (which may use or not optimization) like Xfree and the gnome libraries.

    And it works. I don't see a reason to do what ej: gentoo or BSDs are doing. THe "configurability" reason is stupid: I do not need to recompile gaim to get rid of msn support, I'd just delete /usr/lib/gaim/libmsn.so . d if I want to get rid of XFree fb support, I delete An/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libfb.a . I don't need to recompile with USE="fb". _Good_ software allows you to choose what you want at _RUN_ time not at compile time, and if it needs it it's just broken. There're very very few cases where you really need it (ej: a graphic app with a gtk/qt backend) and for those you make two different packages. No need to waste time & bandwith in sources more than neccesary.

    When I was in school, I took art classes. I becam better, then I fine-tuned my skill aura to cartoon art. I worked at disneyworld in florida for 2 years in a row as a portrait expressionist. Much of my work is done in Photoshop, I didn't jump into the linux scene until I was hired by the Pokemon studios of japan this recent month and a half. As much as it is somewhat offtopic, I must notion that I make money on a whim using inexpensive and easily evailable software. I could move over to a completly-Solaris implementation of computer software, yet that would be the day as only thing that motivates such as switch is a verry wide-spread bug or exploit on Microsoft Windows XP. The economy allows a change to more free software, yet nobody has reason to rattle their shackles and cups on the iron bars.

    Samply art of my creation, is available here. I enjoy making it for children just as much as they enjoy watching the tv show.

    The Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (also XMAME available) project includes sound emulation support for just about every classic arcade game that it emulates. Not to even mention that its sound cores seem to be the best ones available, for example the YM-2151 emulation is the most accurate sound simulation ever written.
