Re:Right.I agree with most of what you said, except that Apple has been in the console market before:
Granted, it was basically Bandai's machine, but it's always interesting to look at what plans Apple had for it in the States.

Re:Linux and Spammers
Linux?
I doubt it, I actually think that Apple
computers are heavily involved in spam.
But hey, dont just take my word for it,
a good article about this:
The Apple Connection with Spam!
From the Article:
"Apple reps admits themselves that their computers are great for sending unsolicited email. The facts are just there, and its an unfortunate fact of business"

truth stranger than realityReminds me of this.
I think it's cool enough to be the first PDA I'd actually plunk down cash on. but it's still lacking in two areas: it's not quite small enough (the front should just be ALL screen, or at most just a narrow frame around it) and it's not in color. I suspect it also would not have the horsepower to play 320x240 xvid movies, which it really needs along with a teeny camera.
That system, with one of those 1GB microdrives for storage, would make a killer pocket computer. Use it to record notes, video, and watch and listen. Type? Who needs to type? Just record everything and let the sync software on the home PC do the rest.

When you say look at Apple, do you mean the Pippin?

Finally, tax payers money go in to good use!
Have you guys read the EULA you have to agree when installing Mac OS X? It says that you can't use it in anyway in connection to flight controls or nuclear facilities, or any form of weapon of mass destruction. So much for putting Macs in to the coolest agencies...
Seems to me that the reason why the Navy used Linux on their newly acquired Xserves were because they couldn't use Mac OS X without violating the contract!
Oh, but maybe you think this maybe be the reason to all this?
Or maybe it's because the government wants to become "hip" again? :) -
Re:IBM in the apple.slashdot.org section ?
Don't normally reply to myself, by I just thought about it further and realised that the IBM equivalent of the Imac girl would be Optimus Prime

Re:Did anybody notice the photo (of the MS/HP Athe
We'll copy their default desktop image
Like all things MS, they copy but they don't totally copy. Look at Win95. It has a lot of the features that Apple OS had for years but not all of them. For example you can change the icon used to represent all folders, but you can't change the icon for an individual folder.
I think MS and their lawyers aren't stupid. They go only so far as to look "innovative" but not outright followers. They know Apple has and will sue anyone who copies them (E-Power, the Korean iMac look-alike)
That's why the new computer looks like Apple Cinema display with ugly appendages and Longhorn with OS X features but still distinctively MS.
Actually I thought that XP and Longhorn looks more like a cross between System 8 and BeOS. -
Don't forget the iNax!
They're just trying to keep up with apple...
Here's the competition...

Re:The Ghost of Senator McCarthy
It will end when we realise that Bush is a 'switcher' and that windows is the OS of choice among those "who hate us"

Rack mount case
I've got an rev. b iMac (the almost-original bondi blue style) with a dead monitor. As near as I can tell the electronics are all fine, but without a working display it won't boot. I'd love to get it running again, minimallly as a "hidden in the closet" server, or better still by finding someone with another dead iMac with a working display where I could merge the parts together into one working machine.
Your iMac seems a good candidate for a transplant to a Marathon iRack 1U case (the $400 price tag, IMO, seems too much but the reviews are very good). Also there's the 1U rack mount case conversion ($40 for instructions but claims that the conversion costs are $50).But since just fixing it doesn't seem feasible (a new CRT has been quoted to me for around $500, so that's not an option), and I haven't been able to find anyone for the "franken-mac" idea, my fiance has been trying to get me to throw it away instead, and sooner or later I'm sure she'll have her way on this one.
Plus the empty case would make a nice macquarium

sphere cooler anywayApple should be rolling out the G5 Sphere any day now.
More seriously, though, at least this means they'll be able to make the next iMac more kickass w/ less worries of cannibalizing sales of other models.

Re:AppleCube,GameCube, CerfCube...
Sure -- pick up a Power Mac G5 Sphere when you get a chance.

Macquariums
The obvious example of case-reuse.
Here be some good examples: The Apple Collection and Aquarium by Jim.

I've been printing computers...
I've been printing computers and then building them during class for the last few weeks. I get them from the Paper Mac page, and print them out with my laser printer. Then I take them to class and, while the teacher is babbling dumb stuff about what she has done with computers, I build macs. I've got a small army of them collecting here...

This is old newsThis went around the Apple rumors sites over a year ago (and you know how reliably *they* are). If you want the proof from the tin foil hat crowd, turn a blue and white G3 on its side and it looks like a Mickey Mouse head
Here's a link on that particular one.
Here's AppleInsider's report on the merger rumor, from February 1999! And you think Slashdot is late with the news sometimes!

And what about the Rowenta iRon?
The Rowenta Surfline iRon existed years before the iMac, so shouldn't Apple rather pay some license fees to Rowenta? And btw, looked from closeby, the iMac is butt ugly.
