Re:Better article please
Wow, you are TRULY batshit aren't you? here we are talking about Adobe and Linux, nobody says a damned word about Windows anything, yet it MUST be that I'm a super secret stealth ninja for MSFT just waiting to ambush your 'precious'. But hey this retailer will be more than happy to give your OS a good slapping around if it makes ya happy Alex, lets begin shall we?
Isn't it sad, how like a frightened child afraid to look under the bed, you cower at the truth? if your driver model isn't shit then why does Dell have to run their own repos even though we are talking a teeny tiny subset of hardware? Oh right because Linux shits itself and dies if you use the default repos! Man that is some excellent product you got there! you think I can get better QA than the third largest OEM on the planet? What, you expect me to tell paying customers "Go to the forum, kiss some loser ass, and maybe, just maybe, in a few days someone will have mercy and give you a big pile of bullshit that may or may not make your sound work again"?
Bleeding yet douchey? want some more? nice thing about having the truth on your side, you can keep throwing punches all day! How about how a decade old Windows beat the shit out of Linux on netbooks or how ASUS has given up on your bullshit or how about Walmart running away from linux as fast as it can? You got the crazy koolaid drunk enough to say they ALL are paid shills because they won't do your forum dance or CLI horseshit? Meanwhile your "hero" Torvalds the great says Plans? We don't need no steenkin plans!. Why don't you tell them that at work next week, see how quick you get a pink slip? More? How about you actually have the balls to celebrate getting a whole 1% market share while you are actually lower than JavaME and there is a whole website dedicated To your bullshit and excuses
.You see you whiny little delusional mama's boy, I'm your worst fucking nightmare...a retailer that still believes. I believe that the community doesn't have to take Torvalds shit sandwiches, I believe that things can be made better, I believe Linux can be something for more than douchebags like you that will happily take a cock slapping from linus as long as you can say you are sticking to "teh man". I believe that there can be Linux boxes on actual shelves and penguins on boxes.
So you go hide now mama's boy, you hide with your Tux blankie and keep saying your magical nigger nigger faggot, or should I say shill shill astroturfer, like it is a magical word that will make all the bad go away. But it won't change reality and the reality is your driver model is shit and more than 15 years behind everyone else and that is why retailers like me wouldn't piss on it, not some mythical money truck that sneaks up to my door in the middle of the night. So go compile something and leave the men to talk about the real world, okay little girl?
And for the actual Linux USERS out there, not the batshit "It is a plot by gates and the Illuminati to kill FLOSS" nutjobs like Alex? As a retailer let me say this: i like your OS, your GUI is in many ways superior to what is out there, but the driver model is shit. I don't care if you use an ABI or sacrifice Linus to Cthulu fix this one damned problem so my customers can run updates without the OS having a heart attack and hosing the drivers? i'll be happy to put Linux boxes back on the shelve

Re:They'll migrate elsewhere
Oh sure thing, all you had to do was ask. Please note the headline which is a quote from Linus who says, and i quote "Linux not designed, never was' then he goes on to talk about it just kinda grows like a virus LOL! Now really, is that ANYWAY to treat the heart of a multibillion dollar OS that millions depend on? I think not. Linus has gotten to big for his britches and needs replaced IMHO.
And do NOT even get me started on RMS. Those pics of him posing with Chavez and Casto? All I could think of was "useful idiot". The guy came up with ONE really good idea (The GPL, which was because he got burnt on a printer driver) and now he squats at MIT (his words not mine) and thinks communist dictatorships are just great and people treat him like he's a saint? WTF? Have you seen his "computer" which he says is THE ONLY "truly free" computer on the planet? It is funky Loongson ARM netbook no longer made which he "surfs" on by using a daemon to fetch pages to his email. The OS whose biggest selling point is the net being dictated by a guy that uses an embedded toy and hasn't surfed a web page in years? WTF?
As for Windows 7 all I can say is THANK FUCKING GOD that somebody at MSFT finally got it! It is intuitive, easy for someone like my dad to use and find new features, while letting an old hand like me work faster with libraries and bread crumbs. But now you watch if they don't fire the sweaty monkey he'll come along and take a big whiz on it trying to ape Apple again with Win 8. Yeah boy I really sound like a shill calling the CEO a retarded baboon.
And I agree the "la la la everything is rainbows la la la" is a BIG problem in Linux right now. Lets be honest: The GUI is fine, graphics could use work in hardware acceleration but it is coming along, but the drivers are total shite on a crusty roll. And the sad part? It is EGO, linus' ego come and it won't go away. In 1993 when Pcs had 1Mb of RAM if you were lucky he said he didn't like ABIs and wouldn't have them. Well it has been 17 YEARS since then, and everyone and his dog and his dog's fleas has an ABI and their drivers don't break. Does Linus listen? maybe realize that what worked in 93 may not work now? NO, oh hell no, he might have to admit he is wrong!
Finally it isn't the specs, do the math: You have X number of kernel developers and those qualified to write driver code, you have Yx10,000 pieces of hardware released per year. Even if Linus didn't break drivers (fat chance there) you would never catch up with what is currently out. The math simply doesn't work. 99.995% of companies will NEVER "pull an Nvidia" and pay a whole team of developers to sit around and do nothing but fix what linus breaks, so they don't bother. with a stable ABI they could write once and it would work for a decade or more, same as the Win2K/XP driver model has lasted for nearly 14 years and the WinVista/7 driver model will be supported until 2020 at the earliest.
But when you point out that even in a perfect world the math simply don't add, what do you get? Dipshits like Alex with his "Nah Nah you must work for teh M$! Linus is a God and does no wrong! U r teh shill!" like a bunch of infants being shown their favorite toy is dirty. Well I've had enough, and so has Walmart, Best Buy, ASUS, Staples, hell I could list the companies that have offered Linux only to give up in single space and it would come out looking like War & Peace.
Did you know that Dell, even though they have but a teeny tiny subset of hardware with Linux offered, has to run their own repos because otherwise the drivers die hard? And yet when I point this out all I will get from the "community" Is "shill shill astroturfer!" while they ignore link after link showing literally hundreds of thousands harmed by this. Well if they want to act like 14 year old Halo teabaggers? fine and dandy I'm making quite a decent living selling PCs WITHOUT their product

Re:They'll migrate elsewhere
Have you taken your meds today Alex dear? I guess not since we are talking about a SPAMMING DOMAIN where NOBODY but your crazy tinfoil hat wearing ass has mentioned ANYTHING about operating systems? Are you REALLY that fucking paranoid? Or does the thought of being next to my large southern manmeat get you so wet between your legs you gotta break out the tweezrs and hope I respond?
But don't worry my little bitch, when OS talks come around I'll be happy to point out those wonderful links that you never seem to be able to respond to, you know, the ones that make you wet yourself? Ones like...oh say Dell has to run their own repos because Linux shits itself and breaks drivers otherwise or your hero Linus, in his own words mind you, saying Plans? We don't need no steenkin plans!
So please, keep it up my little bitch. I do so love and consider it a public service to point out hypocrisy and bullshit whenever and wherever I find it. the fact that you can't even contemplate that a retailer would try your precious turd sandwich and find that it is shit? That it MUST be some right wing conspiracy involving Bill Gates and the illuminati? Just shows what a bunch of crazy fuckwits hang around the Linux "community". Oh and for those that want to see Alex here is a pretty good likeness. Enjoy!

Awww, whatsa matter girlie? Can't even find a single argument to back up your bullshit? None at all? Afraid of the truth? Scared? Crying at being shown that Tux blankie is diseased and covered in shit? Don't blame the messenger because you keep sucking on the Linus cock and then acting surprised when you're blinded by the splooge. As a public service I will again post the links, so that all can see how completely full of shit you are and how unlike you I who have the truth on my side have NO SHORTAGE of links to back my assertions up. Re:Version numbers
Ahhh so here we have proof that when confronted with the truth a Linux zealot can only grab his Tux blankie and scream "nigger faggot" or in Linux terms "Troll shill astroturfer." Perhaps a little more truth to choke on?

Re:Well
Wow, you really want to suck my cock, don't you Alex? Because here we are, talking about fucking high School and the public education system, no one has mentioned Operating Systems in ANY way shape or form, yet still you follow me around like a fangirl with her panties wet. Re:One Era Ends To Make Way For Another
You are like those full retards that think the moon landing was faked, you realize this right? Where is your proof? CITATION PLEASE or go back to blowing Linus and the gang. Because unless MSFT suddenly moved their HQ to the middle of AR without telling anyone (and since it has been over 100 all week with a heat index of 106+ it sure as fuck ain't WA) then you are once again showing what a pathetic little cunt you are.
Where is your response to the links? To the retailers leaving in droves? To Linus himself? Can you not read, is that it? Is words on a page that say something other than "herp derp deh lunix is teh roxorz LOL!" more than your teeny tiny mind able to comprehend? I've actually written articles on what retailers need to sell your product, where's yours? Where have you contributed ANYTHING but mindless Linus blowing, ehh?
Kill yourself. Make this world a better place. You are alone because nobody wants you, it isn't gonna get any better, tomorrow your life will be just as empty as it is right now....kill yourself. Will your worldly goods (although what they'll want with a cardboard box and a tux blankie is beyond me) to the Linux foundation and walk in front of that train. You know you want to, you know the loneliness is eating you alive...kill yourself.
Me I have to get the beef ready for the BBQ, my sweet little half Cherokee GF has as usual invited every kinfolk she has and good BBQ takes tim to do it right. Of course you wouldn't know of such things, having never know a woman's touch or had anything other than MickeyD's. How sad, such a sad and pitiful little creature. I find that....delightful. Make the world a better place, remove yourself from it.Oh and in case you need the links again so you can cry before you get the rope, and for the elucidation of others (I know its a big word, look it up) I'll be happy to paste the paragraphs that makes you so mad, just as a special gift for the holidays.

Re:some proof would be nice
Would you have preferred it if I had wrote "Yo Dawg, I be hooking up video and that shit be fat yo! teh pic be all big and shit, and it be fatter than a ho's ass dawg!" is that more preferable? How else are you gonna write that you get great video performance and the ability to transcode without actually saying that?
So excuse me for actually writing down what I have experienced installing and building AMD systems. Perhaps a video of never gonna give you up or a pic of a distended anus would be more to your liking?
Now back to the topic, I have found since switching that the typical 10% performance gain of Intel usually comes at a 300% markup when you figure in the price of the boards, and most people will never be able to notice the difference. I bet if I built identical quads, one Intel and one AMD, and had you do your average everyday tasks you frankly wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Well not until you got the bill that is.
And frankly anyone that supports the free market would have to be nuts to buy Intel ATM, because their behavior frankly should have had their ass dragged into court for antitrust years ago. Bribery? Rigging software? Oh and BTW Intel still rigs their compiler the ONLY difference since the settlement is they document it in the fine print and give you the "choice" of taking a dump over ALL of the software you compile by forcing it all to run in X87 mode, or only have it take a shit on AMD and Via chips. Wow, what a choice!
When you add to this their current campaign to slowly kill Nvidia, whose chipset division they have already strangled, then how anyone here can say that MSFT deserved to be busted but Intel not I will simply not understand. So if you don't want to reward bribery, unfair market manipulation, and outright douchebaggery, try to buy AMD next time okay? And this is from someone that for nearly 15 years was strictly an Intel man, but I can't reward douchebaggery with a clear conscience.
And as for proof, since teh Google must not work where you are here you Go and you should read the first one especially, since it is a post from right here on
/. where a programmer documents the behavior and what happened when he ran programs compiled with an Intel compiler on AMD. Now since most programs on Windows (including most benchmarking suites) and compiled for Windows with the Intel compiler than the results of ALL those programs must now be looked upon as suspect. It is no different than the classic "Quack.exe" where if it detects A you get one result and B gets you another, even though the chips in question have identical abilities to run SSE code. And this programmer had noticed the problem back in 2004 so for at LEAST 7 years they have been rigging. -
Re:Marketing
The problem I have is NOT flash, which as you said works pretty good, it is that you can't update Linux because the drivers WILL shit themselves and die!
Want proof? proof that nobody here can deny? here you go...why does Dell, one of the largest OEMs on the planet, have to disable the repos on every. single. Ubuntu machine they sell and deal with the hassle and expense of running their own repo, even for a small subset of the hardware they sell? Why because if they don't Linux breaks drivers oh fun oh joy!
It is THIS that I am talking about how mainstream is ignored by the geek brigade. linux is built BY geeks and FOR geeks and as geeks they think because THEY know how to recompile drivers, how to do forum hunts with a list of what make/model/rev of hardware they have, find a fix, and then "tweak" said fix because it was written for hardware B rev f and they have hardware D rev j that anyone can do it, and that is about as far from the truth as from here to Jupiter.
This is why small retailers like me won't carry your product even though it would save us a fortune it license fees, it is why Walmart and every other B&M that has tried offering your product has dropped it, why a 10 year old Windows beat the latest Linux on netbooks and why early adopters like ASUS has all but abandoned your product.
When your product is free, yet all these companies, from little ones like mine to fortune 500 giants, would rather pay money than use your product? That should tell you that you have a problem. Nobody cares if you have the coolest most secure low resource OS on the planet if in 6 months when the updates roll out the box shits itself and dies. The average user isn't gonna jump through flaming hoops just to be "free as in freedom!" and I can't afford to give away lifetime support.
Oh and PLEASE don't say LTS, as long as Linux software is tied to the kernel you might as well call that an out of date unpatched OS, because that is what it is. Oh and please don't say "Use Distro X" where X equals any distro other than the half a dozen I've already tried, since we all know that they are all based on a few "mother sauces" and so far I've tried Ubuntu, mint, PCLinuxOS, and Mepis, oh and Mandriva, and ALL had the same result. Updates roll out/ something breaks. With Windows they get on average a decade of security patches with NO driver issues. I have yet to even update a single machine twice, that equals roughly 18 months of support depending on the distro, without something breaking. Gentlemen that is simply unacceptable.
Now feel free to call me nasty names and mode me down, as I've noticed that anyone that says anything other than "gee isn't Linux perfect? Why it sure is Biff, and RMS's farts smell like roses!" gets modded to hell and called the Linux equivalent of faggot and nigger, that is shill and astroturfer.

You mean this billion?

IF this is kept "straight/honest"?
It's going to be a GOOD thing vs. cybercrime!
* Only problem is, how much of what happens lately actually IS "straight/honest"?
NOW, by my populating a custom HOSTS file here, and firewalls rules tables (routers & various software form ones) since 1997 here? Yes - I know where the malware's MOSTLY coming from... block the damn places OUT!
(Communist block
.ru/.su/.cn. .info, .mobi, .cc (cocos islands) TLD's to name a few "for examples" I know of from seeing the data daily for more than a decade++ here now...)This is doable for COMMON FOLKS TOO by ISP/BSP @ the behest of goverment "for the people, by the people" etc.!
Simply because IF I can put together a list of 1,444,572++ & growing, MYSELF (Took me 10++ yrs. first via a Delphi built system, & for a yr. now, via a Python system)??
WELL - So can the U.S. Gov't. to protect US, the taxpaying constituency, vs. malware threats &/or Hacker-Cracker types online!
(VERY EASILY ACHIEVABLE/DOABLE, no questions asked!)
APK
P.S.=> I sincerely HOPE this is an honest effort & NOT just to protect the wealthy (I haven't read the article yet though), because ISP's/BSP's (former CableVision NOC here) really CAN be of tremendous assist in this effort (e.g. - DNSBL is a start in & of itself vs. known purveyors of malware for instance, as a start vs. most folks blundering into those spots online)) - I just hope this isn't just "monitor ALL U.S. Citizens for contact with (insert wealthy company here) only" type stuff...
E.G.-> That's going on for Lockheed Martin right now, as we speak for example! They're watching who/what goes in or probes their network(s) -> http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2079951/nsa-starts-monitoring-defence-firms-internet-traffic
I mean, WE as taxpayers PAY FOR GOV'T. OPERATIONS & SERVICES, thus, we OWN IT, nobody else - help protect US, the taxpaying constituency via these means, & NOT JUST THE WEALTHY!
This type of system HAS that kind of possible potential too, for the common person in the USA - as it would/could help keep malware infestations down!
(DISCLAIMER: I am not a big fan of the IMF for many reasons, or ANY "central banking scheme", ala -> http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/the-money-masters/ (who probably ARE the ones that brought this about as imo, they are the ones "runnning the show" out there, not our government, alongside all the other "wealthy power brokers")).

Re:EU membership
I dunno, man. Seems to me they're not all that far off.
Those legislations is based on EU directives, more then half of the governments in EU don't even want them (no one have asked the citizens of EU about them, but likely a majority don't want them either). Despite that most EU members don't want them, they are forced upon them because EU is not a democratic organisation.
Turkey far surpass that EU directive. But they are in their "right" to do so, as EU directives only states minimal requirements.

Re:EU membership

Re:None of them
And here comes the religious dogma I was talking about! Isn't it funny that the argument against having stable functioning drivers always comes down to IDEOLOGY, with the rant most people link to going so far as to call those that refuse to hand over source "leeches" and hope the kernel futzing breaks their drivers?
I mean WTF is it to you if some do and some don't? Is that ANY different than right now? Nope, as you still have companies like Nvidia that makes binary blobs, only now you get to watch them break every six months. Does having open drivers keep Linux from breaking? Nope again as the open drivers break just as often thanks to Linus and his kernel fucking, because if you could look at it logically instead of a faith based perspective you'd see that there are only so many devs, and there are fewer of them than drivers to fix so drivers will ALWAYS be broken when Linus gets a wild hair up his ass, every. single. time!
And allow me to say that if your way "worked" in any kind of reasonable fashion retailers wouldn't avoid your OS like the clap which I can assure you we most certainly do. Not just all the thousands of mom&pop shops, dotting the entire country, but big names like Best Buy, Staples, Walmart, do you think they avoid your OS because of its "quality construction" or a secret conspiracy? NO! It is because they take the box home, run updates when the little icon tells them to and get a broken machine like it is 1993 all over again, and promptly take that broke ass shit back! And since we retailers can't sell used as new that means we take a hit on every return making Linux even MORE expensive!
As a final word allow me to give you proof, undeniable proof like a slap to the face your current way is broke ass shit. Now I'm sure you'll find some excuse, like "Use Distro X" or "You should buy hardware Y" but in the end all you will have is excuses because this proof should make even YOU take note! Now you and your fellow converts think we retailers are just full of it, that it should "just work" right? well when one of the biggest OEMs on the planet has to DISABLE the repos and spend considerable money and man hours keeping a badly out of date "corporate repo" just for their customers because if they don't the drivers WILL break then i'm sure you can see why both little guys like me and big guys like Walmart and OEMs like ASUS have washed their hands of your OS. I mean when fricking netbooks, a class of machine built around Linux strengths and which started out more than 30% Linux ends up completely obliterated by a decade old Windows OS it is high time to ask yourself "What are we doing wrong?" and I'd say basing your OS on religion instead of sound design practices and trusting your customers to make purchases that will benefit them (such as choosing FOSS drivers where possible so they have LTS) is a good example of why Linux is so far behind everyone else, and why even free you are getting hammered by an OS with a $100 barrier to entry.

Re:The Game of Catchup
Off the top of my head...Nvidia, Realtek, Via, Broadcom, Aetheros, and ATI...that enough for you? These are just the ones off the top of my head where an update completely wasted the driver leaving a broken machine in its wake.
Frankly I have seen ONE, just one mind you, machine where it was able to go more than a single update without a single driver breaking, and that was a 10 year old Intel box I was getting ready to chunk and decided to try it. I still threw it away BTW, as nobody wants 10 year old junk anymore.
But I want to thank you, Mr Linux Zealot, thanks for giving a perfect example of why we retailers avoid your product because if we dare to say anything other than "Gee isn't Linux swell? Why it sure is Biff, and RMS's beard smells like roses!" then we get nothing but vicious hatred, with the words "shill" and astroturfer" being your nigger or wetback. anybody that doesn't get in line and follow the "Linux is perfect" meme gets shot down.
Finally you want some proof, 100% undeniable that my words are true? Will the largest OEM on the planet be good enough for you? Dell is having to run their own repos because if you dare to try to update from Canonical's it breaks the drivers.
But I'm sure that rather than admit you are wrong and that drivers are a serious problem, you'll instead trot out the trusted Linux TMs, which BTW they've made a site dedicated to the complete bullshit excuses Linux Zealots use to cover up their failings. So let me guess which ones you will use....let's see...how about "Use Distro X" "Works for Me" and "Astroturfer". Any I missed?

Re:the first thing to happen
I bet this'll take over half a decade; not unlike the transition of Hotmail off of BSD:
Recall that they bought HotMail in 1997 and was still hiring Solaris admins to work on the port in 2002:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1019450/microsoft-uses-solaris-servers-for-hotmail-shockThey bought DATAllegro back in 2008, and AFAICT haven't ported that off of Linux to Windows yet either.
And however long ago they bought the PowerSet guys for Bing, last I heard they were still using Hadoop/Java too.

Re:oh tfa...
Asus releases honeycomb source (well, some of it)
Google's ways of open sourcing are rather strange, but anyone is free to expound on Gingerbread and release it. People for some reason expect open-source to mean "show us and give us everything that you are doing while you are doing it". You sure don't see anything close to Cyanogenmod for the iPhone or iPad, so at least Android is a lot *more* open, despite not being all the way open.

Re:Both?
Could be MUCH worse: Imagine a US Goatse'ing? Personally I'm waiting for some hacker group to hit the Yahoo portal (which if you don't know is #1 by a long shot with the normal folks) and replace the page with a giant Goatse with an arrow pointing at the...erm...affected area with a "reach in here to check your email" caption. Bonus points if they have the appropriately gross sound effects when they mouse towards it and an actual email button in the center.
As for TFA, I'll probably get shit for daring to ask but fuck it, I got karma to burn: When the fuck is the Linux guys gonna stand up and stop taking shit sandwiches? Oh I don't mean the Slax guys, I think they have their own timetable. I'm talking about the 6 month upgrade deathmarch pushed by Canonical. does ANYONE think really decent, or hell, even half ass QA can be done in that amount of time? And look at how many open bugs are over a year old! If Apple or MSFT tried that shit they would be hung out to dry, but with Linux you get "here its free, shut up and take it" which I still say is a shit sandwich approach. I don't care if your shit sandwich is free or not I'm still not taking a bite!
So I'd say if you want to gain some real numbers (as opposed to simply being able to say "we're not dead yet!") then serious bug fixing and QA needs to be going on and the deathmarch really needs to DIAF for that to happen. I mean when Dell, one of the largest manufacturers in the world, can't even allow the repos to run because it will bork the machine and cause the whole thing to fall around the user's ears? I'm sorry but that's just fucked up and if even Dell can't get decent QA on the tiny subset of Ubuntu boxes they sell what chance does a little shop owner like me have of setting up a machine and not having it shit itself on the customer if he updates it?

Re:Merge
Old, but I'll reply anyway. I am NOT a hardware engineer, forgive any garbled terminology.
Apparently there is something about how Seagate implemented power saving (in some desktop drives) that makes it so that it only works properly under windows. The drive will spin down at odd times while linux thinks it can still write to it, and that'll create a bad sector with a high amount of frequency. Apparently the best fix is to disable the power saving altogether, but that pretty much sucks.
So seagate took a pretty well understood interface and screwed it up to make it windows only. They have also advertised (I'm pretty sure, don't quote me) that these drives with this messed up power management were linux compatible when they clearly weren't.
This seems related, and explains the issue I saw almost exactly. Of course, it could just be that the drives are shit and the click of death would've happened under any OS.

Re:Are Computer Crooks Renting Out Your PC?
Using the CLI (which NO consumer will EVER touch in a million years) I have NO doubt? And if you manage to get two updates in a row without Linux shitting itself then you are the luckiest bastard in the world! Oh and the meme you are using is called WorksForMe (TM). Oh and you might want to tell the guys at The Register that it WorksForMe(TM) while you're at it.
As for nothing wrong with the driver model you are using the meme StableKernelDriverABINonsenseâ while ignoring the fact that everyone else has had one for over a decade and if you'll look up the arguments in favor of not having a standard ABI they are strictly political in nature and the one that wrote it even goes so far as to call those that don't give ALL driver code to the kernel devs "leeches".
And you STILL won't ask yourself the question, will you? What are your competitors doing right, that you are doing wrong? If there is nothing wrong with the driver model why has ALL B&Ms and just about all OEMs dropped your product like a bad habit? I'll tell you why it is because IT IS A BROKED ASS MESS that's why! And is that a Dell Ubuntu offering? Bet it ain't, as they don't work with the Ubuntu repos LOL!,
Kinda sad that every single talking point you have has been regurgitated so damned many times it is a meme, isn't it? It is like the flip side of the MSFT shills, where you go through the TM list and pick the same tired ass arguments, while ignoring nobody wants your product. Oh well, some will just never learn.

Re:Pamela JonesWhy don't you go and ask him, you silly troll? Or better yet, you could always just google
... and look for where Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols is cited as saying:Since PJ has disappeared recently, there are now rumours abounding again that she does not exist. However Linux Watch's Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols said that Jones did exist as he had met her several times and chatted on email.
"She is not a front for anyone. She is a paralegal, hence her excellent legal research skills, which are the foundation of her stories. And, she's a journalist by any standard I know of," he wrote. He admits that he has never seen her passport, but he deeply admires her anyway.
Of course, one could be forgiven of thinking you never met a lie you didn't like, with all your FUD.
Your attacks on PJ have been motivated by a combination of jealousy and plain old-fashioned sexism. As a wannabe "mouthpiece", you can't stand that Pamela is one of the most important, and most respected, people in the F/LOSS ecosystem.
You simply can't bear the thought that a woman could do what PJ did - hence all the cries of "who is Pamela Jones", "she doesn't exist", "she's really a team of IBM lawyers", etc.
It was necessary for your purposes to make Pamela Jones into something less than a woman and a grandmother; after all, viciously attacking a grandmother for pointing out the truth would lump you in with the wife-beaters, child molesters, and other scum.
And you know what's funny? She's leaving on a high note, having accomplished what she set out to do - you on the other hand, have single-handedly earned yourself a reputation as a rather boring buffoon. You really are jealous of her, and it shows.

Re:"Most" doesn't mean "very".
bribery, hidden agendas, employee abuse, poor environmental practices
Did you even try googling any of those? Perhaps you've been so poorly bribed that, abused by Microsoft though you may be, your hidden agenda is to astroturf on tech news sites, polluting them?
Bribery:- 2005-2010 Bing "Loyalty Rewards" program - widely derided as an attempt to grab customers with bribes. If Bing is as good as they want it to be, why do they need to offer cash?
- 2007 OOXML ISO process bribes - you may want to argue about rewarding people for using Microsoft products, by "competitive behavior" maybe you mean offering incentives to a few key people to get things done. But for a standards process, that is bribery. Standards must be evaluated on their technical merit alone. (PDF warning)
- 2006 Bloggers bribed with laptops - when every news site is calling it a bribe, I'd say it's not just "competitive behavior."
Hidden Agendas
- 2010 - Microsoft's shell company, Attachmate, attempted to buy 882 patents from Novell.
- 2007 - Here's the same wired story about OOXML. I'm not going to do your googling for you; this one's obvious.
- 2005 - Microsoft's addition of PDF support. I didn't even know about this one, but it turns up in a google search... Dude, do your own homework next time.
Employee Abuse
- Have you never heard of throwing chairs? Seriously?
- Microsoft's continuing problems with their Chinese workforce - remember, don't hire them directly. Farm it out to a subsidiary to distance yourself from the inevitable PR disaster.
Poor Environmental Practices
Did you mean to suggest Microsoft is a hardware company?
Or can we count all the useless trash they have pushed out the door, forcing users to reformat their machines as soon as they buy them so they can downgrade to a decent OS, Vista ending up straight in the landfill? -
Re:We will when MS does.
attempts to throw patent roadblocks in front of everything
I have to defend them on that one. As crazy as the patent system has gotten, if they don't defend their patents, they are essentially putting up a big sign for Apple, Sony et. al. saying "Come rape us!" In this crazy environment, if someone comes suing you over patents, you have to have some patents of your own to hit them back with. It's sad but true that the only way for a company like MS to stand is to have its own cache of patents to ward off other companies. Just ask Sony and LG.

Re:Free software
Hi MR FOSSie! You do realize that when you write M$ everyone assumes everything you post is coming from this guy yes? BTW like your Star Trek uniform!
As for your "points" why yes nobody ever bought or pirates MSFT Windows when your free wonderfulness was there, it is all network effects because nobody tried selling Linux...wait a tick...Hasn't everyone from Dell to ASUS and Walmart actually tried selling your OS and thanks to the PITA factor and shitty QA (which for a nice example see this little gem about how the Dell Ubuntu offering breaks if you update it) was labeled by the public a giant DO NOT WANT in fifty foot letters?
Or do you think it was a secret "M$ conspiracy" that OEMs saw 4 TIMES the returns with Linux or that when given a "choice" (you as a FOSSie ARE for freedom of choice, yes?) the customers ran to Windows as fast as they could even on netbooks which were supposed to be designed to take advantage of the strengths of Linux in the first place?
It really is simple MR FOSSie, hell it is practically first day business school 101: Give the customers what they want and listen to them and you gain share, give them a mess of CLI and "RTFM Noob!" bad attitude and watch as they stay away in droves it really is that simple. look at how Apple just waltzed in and royally kicked your ass, why is that? It is because they listen to their customers and designed an OS around the philosophy of "it just works" with little to no hoop jumping required, whereas Linux despite the pretty on top is really just CLI at heart. Which would have been fine if this was still 1997, but it is 2011 and the customers have made it clear all the CLI and hoop jumping (not to mention the driver mess or "update foo broke my drivers" which frankly we haven't seen in Windows since the end of Win9x or OSX since 10.2) is a giant "do NOT want!".
It really is simple: you are busy growing or you are busy dying. The only "growth" we have seen in Linux is Android (which is gonna be TiVo tricked right out from under you and therefor is as useful to the FOSS movement as having a Linux router) and despite FIFTEEN YEARS you are still below the margin for error. I didn't make those numbers up friend, and if those numbers would have been posted by any business they would have closed up shop by now. But you keep on thinking that you can force users to do things your way and that it is a big M$ conspiracy when you find users don't actually enjoy reading man pages or trawling forums for fixes. You DO know what the classic definition of insanity is, right? If it ain't worked after FIFTEEN YEARS perhaps it is time to try a different approach, ya?

Re:I mourn the alpha chip
HP transferred the Alpha technology to Intel in exchange for some deals on chips and marketing. That's the last anyone heard of the Alpha.
Though, like many other DEC innovations, we continue to benefit from Alpha today. The next-generation Alpha EV8 was the first chip to implement SMT (hyperthreading). There was an internal legend as to how that came about: rumor was that the chip folks said to the compiler folks, "Hey, we just built an 8-issue processor," to which they responded, "Are you kidding? We can't optimize for that." So they thought for a while and decided to just let the CPU run four threads at once.
Such a pity. The chip was nearly finished when Compaq sold the whole thing to Intel, which promptly canceled it.
Meanwhile the Itanium, dubbed the iTanic, sank.
It was sunk out of the gate. HP grudgingly shipped various revisions of the Alpha EV7 for several years... and if you believe the tech tabloids, Alpha was so much faster than Itanic that HP declared that "not one Alpha benchmark will be released until the Itanium platform(s) is/are faster".

Another article:
The inquirer has another article where Medhi says the setup a honey pot! How preposterous! More seriously the question arises: If bing relies so heavily on users utilizing google, then what exactly does bing add to enhancing search results? Why would a user use bing specifically, and why not just use google?
Mehdi then claimed that Google's experiments were deliberately set up to fool Bing, labelling them a "honeypot attack".
... Mehdi wasn't finished with denigrating Google's work, saying the tactic is also known as "click fraud" and that it is "the same type of attack employed by spammers on the web to trick consumers and produce bogus search results". -
Re:Yes, as I've said many times....
I had more than one Nvidia video card failing on me after less than 2 years. In the past Nvidia were OK.
This might be because of a manufacturing problem:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1004378/why-nvidia-chips-defective
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Nvidia-GPU-failure,6248.htmlThe latter link emphasizes notebooks, but there's no reason why desktop chips wouldn't be affected.
FWIW, I was already aware of this, that's why I picked a Gigabyte 9800GT with a 3 year warranty.
They should have fixed the problem by now... But who knows

Amiga Apps; back from the 90's.
People have been calling software applications "apps" for years before the iphone existed. My bosses in the mid 90's said to make sure all of their apps were on the new computer. These were not geeky people by any means. I am sure people called software "apps" before that.
Indeed. The category "Applications" was often shortened to "Apps".
A quick search on the web found:
http://193.166.3.2/pub/amiga/apps/
where the Apps directory has the date "11-Aug-1999"That is mirrored at:
http://ftp.funet.fi/index/amiga/apps/
with the same date.An article posted in 3 Jan 2007 at:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1025786/the-amiga-dead-long-live-amiga
details the Amiga platform after CBM's 1994 demise:
"Intent is amazing, like Java on steroids: the entire OS and all apps are compiled . ."
((Since then (of course)development went on for Amiga OS4 in a different direction.))
Intent was a 199'ties development direction. -
Dirk Meyer: Engineer who made marketing mistakes
This article explains: Coup at AMD: Why was Dirk Meyer Pushed Out? Quote:
"Remember, Dirk Meyer's three deadly sins were:
1) Failure to Execute: K8/Hammer/AMD64 was 18 months late, Barcelona was deliberately delayed by 9 months, original Bulldozer was scrapped and is running 22 months late.
"2) Giving the netbook market to Intel [AMD created the first netbook as a part of OLPC project] and long delays of Barcelona and Bulldozer architectures.
"3) Completely missing the perspective on handheld space - selling Imageon to Qualcomm, Xilleon to BroadCom."
There is a comment at the bottom of this poor-quality article in the Inquirer that says Dirk Meyer "was the lead engineer who designed the Athlon, Opteron and the DEC Alpha. Let's not forget that from 1999-2006, AMD actually had better processors than Intel, and this was due to Dirk Meyer's technology." -

HDCP?
I thought that since HDCP was cracked it's possible to make high-def copies via HDMI? So it doesn't matter what encryption exists inside the playback device since if it's going to be output to an HDMI device, it can be captured and recorded?
Or was the HDCP crack mitigated by new keys on new devices? Or is HDMI copying not practical in the real world?

Re:Apple did the same with Itunes. BOYCOTT APPLE.
Never let those pesky "facts" get in the way of a good Apple-bashing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3.com
[MP3.com] was shut down on December 2, 2003 by CNET, which, after purchasing the domain name (but not MP3.com's technology or music assets), established the current MP3.com site.
On January 12, 2000, MP3.com launched the "My.MP3.com" service which enabled users to securely register their personal CDs and then stream digital copies online from the My.MP3.com service. Since consumers could only listen online to music they already proved they owned the company saw this as a great opportunity for revenue by allowing fans to access their own music online. The record industry did not see it that way and sued MP3.com claiming that the service constituted unauthorized duplication and promoted copyright infringement.
Judge Jed S. Rakoff, in the case UMG v. MP3.com, ruled in favor of the record labels against MP3.com and the service on the copyright law provision of "making mechanical copies for commercial use without permission from the copyright owner." Before damage was awarded, MP3.com settled with plaintiff, UMG Recordings, for $53.4 million, in exchange for the latter's permission to use its entire music collection. Later, the firm no longer had sufficient funds to weather the technology downturn. MP3.com was subsequently bought and the new owner did not continue the same service.
Weakened financially, MP3.com was eventually acquired by Vivendi Universal in May 2001 at $5 per share ($23 below the IPO share price) or approximately $372 million in cash and stock. Jean-Marie Messier, then-CEO of Vivendi Universal, stated "The acquisition of MP3.com was an extremely important step in our strategy to create both a distribution platform and acquire state-of-the-art technology. MP3.com will be a great asset to Vivendi Universal in meeting our goal of becoming the leading online provider of music and related services.
Vivendi had difficulties growing the service and eventually dismantled the original site, selling off all of its assets including the URL and logo to CNET in 2003.
For comparison, Apple opened the iTunes Music Store in April 2003--23 months after Universal got MP3.com. CNET bought mp3.com in November 2003.

Re:Initial cost is a small piece of the cost
Hi MR Slashqwerty! I bet y'all never threatened to drop their ass like a bad habit, did you? Squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that. As long as you were willing to put up with Tier 1, why give you anything better? And it still doesn't change the facts (BTW, I LOL at how anything other than "Gee Biff, isn't Linux swell? It sure is Skip, it never breaks and RMS is a genius!" get a troll mod here) that despite the "in the cloud" buzzword bingo we are talking about a desktop based solution and 5 will get you 10 that they have plenty of Windows only specialized apps and AFAIK there is NO FOSS company that supports a combo Windows desktop/cloud based solution.
Which means they'd have to...chunk their desktops, because odds are some of the hardware won't be supported (before anybody goes "poo poo, great support, poo poo" seen what happens with the newer Realtek and SiS chips? It is suck city on Linux, and that don't count Wireless or funky Intel and SiS GPUs), buy Workstation class hardware because NOBODY sells Linux OEM on cheapo $300 boxes with the power you get from the Dell or HP windows ones. Oh and before you say "Dell does" you might want to read this, you can't actually use Ubuntu repos and update a Dell because the hardware breaks (great QA there Canonical!), they'll have to pay tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands to have ALL their data and specialized apps converted to a Linux based solution, and finally find some Linux Gurus and pay out the ass because Linux guys with real chops ain't cheap. you can buy good Windows admins for less than half.
So my point still stands. The cost of the software itself is almost never a deciding factor , so "free as in beer" is as worthless a buzzword as "synergy" in that case, it is all the other costs like support, retraining, having apps written to replace existing ones, and paying coders to add features which are inevitably missing. Case in point, did Scalix ever build in calendars capable of being accessed by multiple users yet?

Re:Quick Summary
Excellent post, you hit the nail on the head here..
The media played a large role in the perception of the project by eagerly latching on to every bit of bad news about the project Funded by Microsoft, no doubt. They wrecked the entire ISO organization for the sake of a file format they never intended to use themselves
... why not this?I was trying to remember which organization that Microsoft actively infiltrated and "wrecking" but could not, it was that one. Anyone who doubts the efforts of Microsoft, to spend financially, to prevent Linux's adoption anywhere, especially here are quickly forgetting the last world stock exchange to migrate from Microsoft Windows IIs Server to Linux (
.NET and SQL Server failures happened as early as 2008 ) and Major League Baseballs dumping Silverlight. Two other recent blemish on the Microsoft rules the server world domination message...good luck with that. The list is growing, migrating away from Microsoft, the world economy is just too bad right now for it to be any other way. So Microsoft spent billions to prevent this one...bully for them, but hardly a "win" in the technical sense of the transition.
Am I the only one who has noticed the paid Microsoft shills changing history via Wikipedia. The revisionist history executed by Microsoft surpasses even the Pro Corporate American political parties who are experts at this type of FUD.
