+ 10 Karma!
You get meta-karma, for actually using the word "balance" in the same sentence with a link to the register. I was impressed. If course, it's unbelievably funny, but I was pretty damn impressed at the effort.
On another front, you can get well-balanced news stories here. -
FULL Interview
Andrew Morton then continued... 'One popular company to be affected by the bug was the OSDN. Their technology news site Slashdot.org updated their database server with the new 2.4.20 kernal.'
It was a disaster. 'The problem was with syncing during unmount. When the people at Slashdot upgraded, their databases became corrupted. Suddenly, duplicate stories began to appear!'
Added Andrew, 'Wow, duplicate stories. There's a shocker'
The full interview will be availible soon on The Onion -
With that headline...
I thought I was reading The Onion!

not all that funny
I found this a tedious read, heavy handed and predictable.
The Onion packed more humor into one fake headline:
"NASA delays shuttle launch out of sheer habit"
than that essay manages in endless paragraphs. (disclosure: I worked at the NASA Ames Research Center.)

Re:The better point ...
That issue of the Onion is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in my entire life. I remember when it first came out.
I mean yes, those guys have done a wonderful job of producing biting satire for years, but to tackle a subject that sensitive so soon after the event itself was something no one in their right minds would do. And yet The Onion managed to find small glimmers of dark dark humour in an otherwise depressing event while still paying great respect to those that lost their lives and not feeling like an attempt to wring attention out of a horrible event.
Using humour to pay respect to a tragedy like Sept 11th is an enormous challenge. The Onion made it looks easy.
I found this article in particular to be a perfect balance of the two: God Angrily Clarifies "Don't Kill" Rule. -
Re:The better point ...
Yeah, it was almost like some bad Jerry Bruckheimer movie, wasn't it?

Solutions to lack of slack
there is only so many times in a day you can "go make coffee" or "check your email".
It sounds like you need some help... I've built up a fairly good list of sites to visit while waiting on things at work. I've put together a fairly good-sized list so that even if I get to the bottom of the list, by that time, I can start back at the top of the list again and there'll be new material. =)Geek Slack List

Not much info, since the cache was made before the test flight.
Here are a few more mirrors, with similarly irrelevant content:

2. id's homepage
3. Geocities: you never know what you'll find!
On the other hand, I also found this, which has a lot of good info.

Re:Not if we pass LAWS to HANG them....
I bet I know a lot more about politics than you do.
I bet I'm a lot more willing to learn what I don't know.
I also bet I'm more willing to explore what works rather than dwell on unlikely potentials (Passing a law to hang corrupt bureaucrats)
I admire your convictions, and I think people should be reminded that we have the power to pass laws to hang corrupt bureaucrats, but I'm not going make all my hopes contingent on the unlikely possibility.
Not everybody has been voting since 1976, but I also noticed you didn't flaunt your experience working/volunteering for elected officials, organzing opposition against laws, bills, policy, etc.
Secondly, I wasn't targeting you, I was trying to advise anyone who read my post to learn as much as they can about how the system REALLY works as a way to channel thier rage against these assholes.
It reminds me of that Onion, Point-Pounterpoint, "We must retaliate with blind rage." vs. "We must retaliate with measured, focused rage."

Interesting that this article hit #1 on the blogdex a few days ago, and has since fallen off the chart.
Interesting links there now are Republican commentary from The Onion and a frightening NY Times article on the "virtual, centralized grand database" the new Homeland Security Bill the House just passed would create. -

Re:All copy protection is useless
``What's stopping people doing this?''
Nothing, but this is not copying. It is playing, then recording. Most methods would result in degraded music (as does ripping, then encoding to a lossy format (Vorbis, MPEG, WMA)). This is either not a concern to the Big Bad (but see this - it's funny), or it will be (is?) prohibited by law. I fully agree with your fundamental point, though. Anything that can be read, can be copied. You just might need special *ware to do so. -

Re:Interesting
That would be kinda like this guy. But maybe it will fade over time.
I have found that people actually expect you to be a Mac zealot when they find out you use one. I remember showing off my new iBook to a friend in a café and someone else on the table was asking me "So why should I use this instead of windows." My answer was (and always is in comparable situations), that everyone should use what works best for them. -

RIAA Sues Radio Stations for Giving Away FreeMusic
RIAA Sues Radio Stations for Giving Away Free Music
LOS ANGELES--The Recording Industry Association of America filed a $7.1 billion lawsuit against the nation's radio stations Monday, accusing them of freely distributing copyrighted music.
"It's criminal," RIAA president Hilary Rosen said. "Anyone at any time can simply turn on a radio and hear a copyrighted song. Making matters worse, these radio stations often play the best, catchiest song off the album over and over until people get sick of it. Where is the incentive for people to go out and buy the album?"
According to Rosen, the radio stations acquire copies of RIAA artists' CDs and then broadcast them using a special transmitter, making it possible for anyone with a compatible radio-wave receiver to listen to the songs. ...

I need to vent for 5 minutes here.
My sentiments exactly. From the perspective of Fortune magazine, we're failing to buy into their incredibly narrow definitions of success. I'm overeducated and underemployed by CHOICE - I make about $24,000 a year, in NYC no less, but by making some wise lifestyle choices, I'm living a much happier life than those who are trying to build their life around the Fortune magazine model. What are my age cohorts supposed to be making at my age, according to Forbes & Co.? $40/hr? I suggest that my fellow Gen-Xers play basketball instead of golf - if this saves us $1000 each per year, after allowing for taxes, that's over 30 more hours we have to spend with our friends money well "spent". Support local artists at $5-10 a show rather than going to see some $45 arena show, and you might actually see some talent.
Unfortunately, the effect of this is that we might start thinking for ourselves, and this is the last thing Fortune wants us to do - we might start realizing that economic indicators like the GDP don't actually measure economic health for normal people, and we might not act in a way that allows them to continue with their unsustainable worldview.
This article sums up my life well - the person featured in the article is a real person, according to my similarly employed housemate, and a friend of hers. That's because we have time to make friends with interesting people, like Onion staff writers, because we're not networking at your boring parties :) -
